Socio critic and human rights crusader, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, has lamented the lack of will power by successive governments in the country to do the right thing. He submitted that for Nigeria to move forward and take its rightful place among the comity of nations, the youth must rise up and champion the course through aggressive but peaceful revolution. He spoke in Makurdi, Benue State, recently. Excerpts:
After 11 years of our democracy, do you think we have really come of age?
We have not even started growing teeth yet. So how can we come of age? We have not come of age at all because although the name is democracy but we are not practicing democracy. People who are already elected want to remain there because of the benefits they derive from the positions. That is why the whole thing has become a do-or-die affair. If nothing is done to curb the present trend, in the nearest future, contestants will start poisoning themselves if they cannot kill themselves directly. Even if they bring angels from heaven this election, it will be rigged. Already rigging has started through this delegate election. If they allow groups to elect their delegates without government interference it would be good.
Now, let’s look at the Jonathan’s government. How would you say he has faired as President?
President Goodluck Jonathan may have the determination to succeed but as far as I am concerned, he has failed woefully. The situation of light has not changed. We are still in darkness. The roads are still bad. The case of insecurity has reached its zenith with kidnapping and bombing here and there. Each time there is bombing the President would say we are closing up on the perpetrators but up till now, nobody has been arrested. What concerns them now is how to win elections. They do not care about security. There is no impact in this government at all.
Among all the gladiators, who do you think can best govern this country?
Sincerely, my best candidate is General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) because he has been tested. He was head of state, he did not steal. He was a minister of petroleum he did not steal, he was military governor he did not steal, he was head of PTF he did not steal. Prof. Pat Utomi could also do very well. And this young man that people are trying to under-rate, that Nuhu Ribadu, give him the opportunity, the man would do something. He has ideas and when he was in the EFCC, people hailed him because he did very well even though some people are saying he was used by Obasanjo. But even if he was used by Obasanjo, he had the courage to do what he did. So, I think he is a great person.
