THE mystery surrounding the sudden disappearance of a two-day-old baby at Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo State, has been generating ripples among those who have heard of the occurrence. The child which was delivered on Thursday, January 6, 2011 at 6.00am, was reported to have been taken away from her mother’s side in the early hours of January 8 while she was asleep. The mother, 20-year-old Bose, had woken up around 3a.m. with her Bosom s engorged with milk. Turning to pick her baby so that she could let out some of the milk into the baby’s throat, the sight that beheld her gave her a momentary shock – the shawl with which she wrapped her baby was still on the bed but without the baby!

Like someone demented, Bose ran to her landlady’s room to ask whether the baby was with her. Her action was based on the fact that the elderly woman was the one who helped in bathing the baby and steam-bathed the mother also in the evening of the previous day, so she felt she should ask her if she saw the baby. Astonished at the development and query, the landlady answered in the negative, reminding Bose that she (Bose) went into her room early to sleep. Bose threw herself on the ground, weeping profusely as all other tenants who had by then woken up wondered what could have caused the disappearance of the new baby and who could have carried out such a devilish assignment.

As soon as it was dawn, Bose and other tenants went to Sanyo Police Station to make a formal report. Waiting till that time was agonising for Bose as she had wanted to move to the police station immediately it dawned on all that the baby was missing but she was prevailed upon to wait till dawn.

Of interest was that though Bose was living with the father of her baby and he was aware that the wife had just delivered, Olaitan, the baby’s father, left home for Lagos on Friday January 7 with someone he referred to as his relation, came back that day around 9.30p.m., but went straight to a vigil service in his church not too far from home, without going home to see how mother and child fared while he travelled. Of interest also was that Bose’s mother who also lived not too far from her daughter’s residence, could not stay with her, as is culturally appropriate, but left her since noon of Friday and went to the same vigil service that Olaitan attended.

So, as Bose and other tenants made their way back from the police station, they met Olaitan on the way where he also disclosed he was not going home but wanted to run an errand for his brother. As he was informed of his missing child, he reportedly broke down in tears. Till the time of this write-up, the baby is yet to be found while the police at the State Criminal Investigation Deaprtment (SCID), Iyaganku, are still investigating the case to unravel the mystery.

Taking Sunday Tribune down the memory lane of the beginning of her relationship with Olaitan, Bose said they met at a Cherubim and Seraphim church which her mother and Olaitan were attending. According to Bose, “I’ve known Olaitan for about four years now. We met in the church my mother was attending when I came to join my mother in Ibadan from Ijebu-Igbo. My mother came to the church for spiritual healing when she was terribly ill and since then had remained in the city. I was attending school and at the same time learning fashion designing. I later dropped out of school and continued with my apprenticeship.

“When we met at the church, Olaitan showed interest in me. I told him I was still a virgin and he replied that if he discovered that to be true, he would marry me. When we eventually had sex and he saw that I was truly a virgin, he swore that he would marry me. I became pregnant with that segxwal act. My mother went to inform Olaitan’s mother about my state but she refused to accept me, saying her son was not the one who impregnated me.

“My mother insisted that it was only Olaitan she used to see with me and since his mother was in Ijebu Igbo, she could not be emphatic about a relationship between two people in Ibadan. I went to Lagos to stay with my father’s relation till I was seven months gone in pregnancy, after which I came to Ibadan to stay with my mum in the church. After I delivered a baby boy, Olaitan struggled to rent a room which we moved into. We were together until the baby  was about 13 months old and he became sick, stooling and vomitting. I tried my best to take care of him, employing the services of an elderly auxilliary nurse that lived in our area. As a young mother, I didn’t know what to do and the baby eventually died.

“On the day he died, we rushed the baby to the hospital but he died before we got there. I put the dead child on my back and left for church where the father had been in spiritual confinement. People there told my mother that she should have helped in carrying the dead child but she said she could not handle a dead baby. The father was called out and he dug a shallow grave in which I was asked to drop the baby. He covered the grave with earth and I went home, crying. Olaitan remained in the church.

“My mother then came to me, telling me to leave Olaitan’s house since the only bond we have is gone. She advised me to go back to my tailoring apprenticeship and forget about him. I went back to my vocation but Olaitan used to come and visit me there.”

Bose and Olaitan were later reconciled by the founder of the church they attended but somehow, the relationship was not smooth as before and this led to a series of quarrels that eventually led to another separation, though Bose was pregnant with another baby then.

The duo later came together when Bose was seven months pregnant and were together until her delivery on January 6.

In his own submission, 27-year-old Olaitan Adebisi admitted that he didn’t come home to sleep that day but said it was because he came back late from Lagos and needed to attend the vigil service. He admitted that he had problems with Bose when she got pregnant the second time because instead of telling him that she was pregnant, she went to inform her friend, with the intention to abort the pregnancy.

“I was angry because of this and told her I did not believe I impregnated her, as I was supposed to be the first person to be notified if she found out she was pregnant. Eventually, I agree that she should stay with me, with the intention to conduct DNA after her delivery. Though I knew she was not wayward, as I was the one who disvirgined her, I disagreed with her working at Ibadan Toll Gate area as a bar attendant but she did not listen to me. Also when she first left my house after the death of our first child, I was not the one who sent her away but her mother, who disapproved of our relationship asked her to leave”, Olaitan told Sunday Tribune.

When asked whether it was not weird that he should not come home to see his wife and newborn baby on his return from Lagos before heading for church, Olaitan said it was because he came back around 9p.m. He however confirmed to Sunday Tribune that the church was within Soka area where he resides. So, if he could still walk to church between 9.30p.m. and 10p.m., what hindered him from having a stopover at home? Olaitan was asked. He answered that he did not think of that.

Police sources at the SCID revealed to Sunday Tribune that on a visit to the scene of the incident, it was noticed that the net of the kitchen window was torn, which indicated that the baby must have been passed through the window to someone outside. Investigations are still on at the SCID. Olaitan was still being detained there while Bose was released on bail on Thursday, January 27 so that she could take care of herself.
