Chinahas told the US to stop preaching on human rights, after the state department's annual report on the issue criticised China, reports the BBC.
Foreign Ministry spokesman, Hong Lei said the US should concentrate on its own rights issues and stop interfering.
Chinese authorities have launched a major crackdown on dissent recently.
Unveiling the report, US officials expressed particular concern over the recent arrest of the artist Ai Weiwei, an outspoken critic of the government.
USSecretary of State, Hillary Clinton also highlighted reports of other intellectuals and activists being "arbitrarily detained" in recent weeks.
Hong said China was happy to talk about rights "on the basis of equality and mutual respect", but added that Beijing "resolutely opposes" meddling in other country's affairs.
"We advise the US side to reflect on its own human rights issues and not to position itself as a preacher of human rights," he said.
"[The US should] stop using the issue of human rights reports to interfere in other countries' internal affairs."
The state department's annual report criticising China, followed swiftly by a tough riposte from Beijing, is now a well-established diplomatic ritual.
But analysts say this year's tit-for-tat exchange has been sharpened by Beijing's crackdown on dissent.
The US report accused Beijing of stepping up restrictions on lawyers, activists, bloggers and journalists.
The Communist rulers were also accused of tightening controls on civil society and stepping up efforts to control the press and internet access.
The Beijing authorities also increased the use of forced disappearances, house arrest, and detention in illicit "black jails" to punish activists, petitioners and their families, the US report says.
Other countries accused of perpetrating serious rights violations in the report included Iran, Iraq, Burma, North Korea, the Cote d’Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus.

well said mr harold, usa must understand that china is not iran or any other nation they can accuse and expect no replies most of the time aggressive.the whole world knows that chinese democracy is not flexible like the one's in the west.all countries have their own policy of wanting to rule their nation even though it might be harsh and ubearable for chinese nationals its best usa stick to their own country.besides, usa is not 100% free of human right they have their own flaws but been the fact that they have been operating on democracy for a long time they know how to keep people out of the loop and make the world think they are 100% flawless.they must understand that their idea of wanting the whole world to copy their footstep is inevitable and inconceivable.till today russia refuse to open up a transparent democracy even the so called vietnam that usa wage war with still remains a communist state till today.they cant make everybody to be like them some countries are still ruled by monarchy till date.believe you me usa do not want to go down with china on this.1.3billion people is no joke if they think they can split china like the division of korean peninsula, soviet union and others.they should know they are very much mistaken.anything is possible but not with the chinese.we can see the demonstration the chinese put up when taiwan decided to be an independent state china obstructed to it and threaten to annex the island with military force and economic sanctions.usa even tried to intervene and told china that taiwan have the right to be an independent state.china told usa that taiwan remains a renegade province to china and a major economic zone to her.that if any country decides to meddle in the internal affairs of china it will be considered as a declaration of war.usa had no choice but decided to keep still.
