Intent on provoking positive change in Africa, the US government is continuing the dialogue it started last year August when President Barack Obama met in the White House with a select group of young African leaders as the Americans now shift the interaction to Nigeria among other African countries, Empowered Newswire reports.
A statement from the US State Department over the weekend said the "Dialogue with Young African Leaders," will be hosted by the US government later this throughout the continent and would later be followed with high -level youth engagement activities and programmes in Africa which has been planned already.
It was added that the Dialogue is part of the US "ongoing engagement with young Africans stemming from the August 2010 President's Forum with Young African Leaders and follow-on events."
"The United States Government, led by the State Department, will host youth engagement programs throughout Africa during the month of May to showcase the efforts of young African leaders, to engage with them in discussions about current challenges on the continent, and to help them discover ways to bring about positive change," the statement disclosed.
According to the State Department, the Dialogue presents an opportunity to showcase and reflect on how young African leaders are building the future of their communities and nations.
The Americans are planning events sponsored by the State Department, the United States International Development Agency and the Peace Corps, in Nigeria and all around the continent including digital interactions through the State Department's Bureau of African Affairs' Facebook page, Twitter, and other social media platforms.
The purpose, the statement disclose is "to allow young Africans and Americans, entrepreneurs and business leaders, to exchange ideas on an array of topics."
Objectives of the Dialogue with Young African Leaders, according to the State Department include:
- Showcasing young African leaders in civil society and business who are motivating youth and highlighting to global audiences a new generation of Africans who are shaping the continent's future;
- The Dialogue wil also emphasize the Administration's priority of mutual responsibility as the foundation of the U.S.-Africa partnership and reinforce the U.S. commitment to supporting African solutions to Africa's challenges;.
- It will also help build networks between young American and African leaders that will lead to lasting partnerships
It would be recalled that last year August in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of Nigeria and several other African independence anniversary, President Obama met with 115 young leaders from 46 sub-Saharan African nations at the White House.
Obama told the young leaders including a handful of Nigerians, "We are rooting for your successes. And we want to work with you to achieve that success. But ultimately, success is going to be in your hands."
According to the US President because sometimes old leaders get into old habits, it is important to talk to young people.
