No fewer than nine suspected kidnappers have been arrested by soldiers at Omoku in Ogba/Egbema/ Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Army spokesman, Major Ahmad Mansur Dikko, told reporters at the weekend in Port Harcourt, the state capital, that the soldiers arrested the suspects when they were trying to evade a team of stop-and search personnel. Dikko said: When the suspected kidnappers were stopped for routine check, they refused to cooperate and instead, opened fire on the soldiers who also engaged them in a shoot-out.
He said the driver of the abductors vehicle, a Nissan saloon car marked AH 41 DBU, was killed in the shoot-out. According to him, three of the suspects were injured with gunshots, while two escaped, but they were later arrested by the soldiers.
The Army spokesman said the suspects leader, one Mr. Abati, is still on the run. The items recovered from them include one AK- 47 rifle, eight rounds of live ammunition, one machete and three shotguns. It was after their arrest, according to Dikko, that it was discovered that the suspects were responsible for the kidnapping of one Mr. Osah Mbadiwe Collins of Omoku recently.
Explaining his kidnap experience, Mr. Collins told reporters that the suspects blocked his car, forced him out and drove him blindfolded to Ahoada area where they hung him upside down for four days. He added that the suspects released him after they collected N5 million from his family. It was learnt that it was after the abductors dropped Collins that they rammed into the army checkpoint and were eventually caught.
