Tension gripped the residents of Sabon Gari, Tundun Wada, a suburb of the Kaduna metropolis on Monday following the discovery of a kit bag containing an object suspected to be a bomb in the residence of a former chairman of Kaduna South Local Government Council, Alhaji Auwalu Tafoki, by unknown persons.

Our correspondent learnt that the kit bag containing the suspected bomb was discovered at about 6am by Tafoki while returning from the Muslim morning prayer at a nearby mosque.

The former council boss was said to have raised the alarm and immediately evacuated all the members of his family from the building before going to report the discovery of the strange kit bag to the police at the Ungwar Sanusi Police Station.

The PUNCH learnt that policemen cordoned off the area as bomb disposal experts made efforts to defuse the suspected bomb.

Residents of the area were said to have fled in different directions for safety, causing confusion in the neighborhood.

“Immediately I saw it, I woke up my family from sleep so that they can leave the house. From there, I went to Unguwar Sanusi Police station to notify them.

“It was the police that decided to call bomb disposal experts and they confirmed it was a bomb which they diffused. I don’t know how the bomb came into my house because I was the one who opened the gate this morning to go and pray,” Tafoki said with tears streaming down his face.

He said there were about 10 persons in the house where the bomb was planted, adding that all of them were safely evacuated from the building.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Aminu Lawan, stated that the police only discovered that the kit bag was containing bundles of water and electricity bills as well as other documents, which had been taken away by the police anti-bomb experts for further studies.

Lawan, a deputy superintendent of police added that the command would wait for the reports of the anti-bomb unit on the suspected kit bag before it could confirm whether what was discovered was Improvised Explosive Device.
