From PM News...and yes, it's another Toyota car!

Armed robbers dressed in police uniform at about 10 p.m.on Sunday at gunpoint snatched a car from the Editor, Nigerian Compass newspaper, Mr. Gabriel Akinadewo. (pictured above)

The editor, who was in his Toyota Avensis car, 2008 model marked Ogun CP 11 AKM, was returning from his office on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway when he ran into the road block mounted by the robbers in front of a new generation bank at Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.

Narrating his ordeal in the hands of the bandits, Akinadewo said, “I give glory to God Almighty for saving my life. I left church yesterday afternoon for my office in my white garment. I am a member of Cheribum and Seraphim Church.

“Immediately I was through with my schedule in the office, I took my leave. On my way home, I drove through the Business Club Road, near Femi Anikulapo’s Shrine and suddenly, four men blocked my way with their car. so I decided to go through Amaraolu Street linking the bank. As I approached the bank, I saw the four men again in police uniform in front of the bank. They flagged me with a torch light that I should stop. I did and greeted them thinking they were policemen.

“They asked me, ‘can we see your boot?’ As I got down to open the boot, one of them suddenly whispered to me, ‘we are not policemen. It is better for you not to shout. So, cooperate.’ Another one grabbed my car key and ordered me to sit at the back seat sandwiched by two of them. One drove my car and the last one sat in the front with the driver.

“Because of the white garment I wore, one of them asked me if I was a pastor. I said no. The same man saw my identity card and asked if I was a journalist. I said ‘yes’. Their leader reprimanded him saying, ‘keep quiet, why do you ask him questions?’ They took me in my car through Wempco Road to Oba Ogunji Road.

“As they were going, one of the robbers called somebody on phone and he said, ‘super, we got two, a SUV and a car. They are okay, they are neat.’ In the SUV, there were four other robbers also dressed in police uniform with the owner of the SUV at the back. The owner was wearing a lace material.

“They moved to Mobil, Stadium Road, Railway line in Agege and Abattoir. There, they told me to get down, that I must not make any noise. I quickly called the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko who immediately ordered police in Abattoir and others to organise search parties for the car. I later reported the matter at Pen Cinema Police Division. I finally got home at about 2 a.m. today.”

Akinadewo commended Manko for responding swiftly to his distress call.
He also thanked policemen who commenced the search for the car as early as they were called on phone by the police boss.

Items lost in the car include an unspecified amount of money, ipad 3, London train oyster card, FCMB mastercard, Nigerian Compass identity card, his driver’s licence, newspapers, purse and complimentary cards.

 Things are happening everywhere.

A Bulawayo man has been arrested after he forced himself on his 13-year-old daughter whom he claimed to have married under the INSTRUCTION of his dead wife. The girl (name withheld) is a Grade six pupil at a primary school in Cowdry park.

It is reported that the man (name withheld to protect the identity of the minor) has ben staying with his daughter since his wife died in 2009. According to a source, sometime last month, the man allegedly had a dream of his wife ordering him to marry their daughter. The man then told some of his relatives about the ‘instruction’.

“they did not agree on what route to take as the issue was complex. Some of them were of the opinion that he adheres to the order while some dismissed it as unacceptable,” said the source.

Early this month, the man decided to obey the order and ‘married’ his daughter in a ceremony attended by his close confidantes.

“It was just a private ceremony. They bought food and drinks and held a small party. That was just about it and the young girl got married married to her father,” said the source.

Like what is expected of ‘married people’, the man thought it wise to get his daughter under his sheets. It is reported that on Tuesday last week, the man was sleeping in his bedroom while his daughter-cum-wife was in the sitting room watching television. He is said to have proceeded to the room and sate besides his ‘wife’.

The man then told his daughter/wife that it was time to indulge. Perhaps perplexed by the situation, the girl tried to get away from her father/husband. This was not taken kindly to by the man who forcibly pushed her to the floor and went on to force himself on her.

The girl then told a relative about her ordeal and was taken to the police station where a report was made, The man was arrested and found himself standing before Western Commonage magistrate facing rape charges. He shocked the magistrate, Mr Richard Ramaboea when he claimed that he was married to his daughter.

“I am married to her. She is my wife. I acted under the instructions of my dead wife, ” he said.

The man was, however, remanded in custody to 27 August.

154  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Breaking News:1,277 NYSC members relocate from Kano State on: 30-07-2012 10:44 PM
Kano  -  A total of 1,277 of the 2,150 corps members posted to Kano State for the 2012 ‘Batch B service year have so far sought for redeployment to other states.

The state NYSC Coordinator, Alhaji Bashir Yakasai, disclosed this in an interview in Kano on Monday.

He said that of those, who sought redeployment, 1,108 were posted to other states on health grounds and for security reasons, while the remaining 169 were re-deployed on marital ground.

He, however, said that the state NYSC had also received more than 50 corps members re-deployed from other states to Kano.

On the issue of rejection, the coordinator said that the number so far rejected by employers was negligible considering the number of corps members, who relocated to other states.

“With the population of Kano, the remaining 873 corps members are grossly inadequate to cater for the state,” he said.

The coordinator, however, assured the corps members serving in the state of adequate security during their one year stay in the state.

Yakasai commended the state government for giving support to the scheme and called on individuals and corporate organizations to contribute towards the success of the scheme in the state. (NAN)
155  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / I’m ready to plead guilty – Bakare on: 30-07-2012 10:39 PM
CONVENER of Save Nigeria Group, SNG, Pastor Tunde Bakare, has said he was ready to plead guilty on his stance on the manner Nigeria was being governed in the present administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Briefing newsmen in Lagos, Bakare said he will not water down his position on state of the nation, as suggested by Lagos State Director of State Security Services, SSS, during their last encounter. He insisted that he was never arrested by the SSS.

He said he had nothing against President Jonathan, as his position on current events in the country was informed by bad governance, misappropriation and embezzlement of state funds.

He said: “Let me make it clear that SSS operatives did not arrest or interrogate me for eight hours. The State Director of SSS and his men treated me with respect and dignity.  “If I am being asked to tone down my message because of my perceived partisanship, those asking me to do so have only succeeded in precipitating a tone up.

“The State Director himself had earlier visited me here at the Latter Rain Assembly in November 2011, making the same request that I tone down my message where politics is concerned, especially with regard to the person of President Jonathan.”

On the recent arraignment of some petroleum importers over subsidy funds, Bakare said: “Concerning all the window-dressing, the shenanigans and the charade going on in respect of the subsidy thieves, it is my opinion that the efforts of this government cannot deliver justice, neither are they meant to.

“If you think my present stand is against Jonathan’s person, then you goof. It is against bad governance, misappropriation of state funds, embezzlement of public funds and spending money like water without appropriation.

“I am against whoever does any of such things. Let it be known to you that neither I nor SNG marched for Jonathan. We marched for constitutionality; for the constitution to be followed regardless of who that action favours or doesn’t favour”, he stated.

By Onochie Anibeze reporting from London
An employee of Diamond Bank Plc, Esther Obiekwe, has become the first ever Nigerian woman to represent the country at the marathon event of an Olympic Games following her nomination by the Athletic Federation of Nigeria to compete at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The marathon event will take place in London on August 5, 2012.

This was made known to newsmen in Lagos during a reception held at Diamond Bank Plc’s corporate Head Office, where Esther Obiekwe presented her nomination certificate to the Board and Management of the Bank shortly before her departure for London.

The athlete also received a return ticket to London courtesy of the bank.
Obiekwe who works in the bank’s Corporate Banking division said, “Although I am not a full time athlete due to my work schedule as a banker, I have participated in some of the world’s top marathons including Athens, Berlin, Boston, Dubai and now the Olympic Games.

“Out of these, only the Boston and the Olympics require one to run a competitive time in a previous marathon to qualify. I qualified for both and have been selected to represent Nigeria in the Olympics.

This means I will run the marathon on August 5 in London as a part of the Nigeria Olympic team. I see this act alone as a victory.”

Speaking at the reception, Uzoma Dozie, Executive Director, Diamond Bank, expressed the bank’s support for the athlete and sports ambassador.

He said, “We believe this is a wonderful opportunity to showcase not only the people of Diamond Bank and our brand, but also the Nigerian people as a whole. Esther portrays the ‘best people’ element of our vision as a bank, exhibiting resilience, determination and originality which are core qualities of the average Nigerian”.

“We are behind Esther’s every step of the race. We want to celebrate her because she demonstrates the new spirit at Diamond Bank. She’s indeed an ambassador whom everyone will love to emulate,” Dozie said.

Boko Haram: Suicide Bomber Attacks Sokoto

Bomb explosions, and a suicide blast hit 2 police stations today in the city of Sokoto, the historic seat of Islam in the country, police and residents said.

The Boko Haram Islamists, responsible for scores of deadly bombings in recent months, are suspected of having hideouts in Sokoto, but the group has rarely attacked within the city.

A senior police officer, who requested anonymity, said a suicide bomber approached the Yan Marina police station in the centre of the city in a car packed with explosives.

The bomber was denied entry at the security gate, where the vehicle blew up, according to the officer.

A resident near the station, Usman Bube, said the area was “engulfed in flames.”

“There was a huge explosion about an hour ago at the police station that was followed by thick smoke,” Bube told AFP. “It is so chaotic now, with people running to safety.”

Lawai Danfili, another resident, reported the second blast near Sokoto’s Unguwar Rogo station.

“We had a loud explosion around the police station. The impact of the explosion shook houses in the area. We all moved indoors,” he said.

There was no immediate report on casualties.

Boko Haram has repeatedly targeted the police across northern Nigeria, where most of their attacks have been carried out.

The city is home to Nigeria’s top Islamic leader, Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar, the current Sultan of Sokoto.

The radical Islamist group has long stated its loathing for Nigeria’s traditional Muslim leaders, saying they have betrayed the faith by subjecting themselves to the country’s secular government.
