The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and former military administrator of Akwa Ibom State, Idongesit Nkanga.
Nkanga was arrested in connection with the $115m which the former minister of petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke allegedly used to bribe some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The former minister reportedly asked the former Managing Director (MD) of Fidelity bank PLC, Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo  to help handle the disbursements of funds.
Diezani’s son, Ugonna Madueke was also accused of overseeing all the payments.
An EFCC source who spoke to Premium Times about the PDP chieftain’s arrest, said “He is in the custody of the EFCC and would be charged to court soon.”
Nkanga allegedly received the money twice, first on March 27, 2015 (N350m), then on March 31, 2015 (N100m).
Senator Chris Anyanwu was also mentioned as a beneficiary of the ex minister’s largesse.
The Senator however denied the allegations saying a bullet should be put in her head if she’s found guilty of taking the money.

Abia State Civil Service was thrown into mourning last Sunday, as one of their own took his life over unpaid salaries.

Popularly called Dee Nwankwo, 52, a staff of the Ministry of Lands and Survey, was said to have hanged himself in his sitting room while his wife and three children had left for church service in the morning.

His body dangling from the ceiling was said to have been discovered by his family members when they returned from church service in the afternoon.
According to an eye witness, the wife was said to have raised an alarm that attracted neighbours who expressed shock at the ugly development, with some saying that the deceased had taken an extreme decision of taking his own life.

A source said the father of three had left a suicide note, saying that he could no longer bear the pangs of unpaid salaries and the attendant shame of not being able to live up to his responsibilities as husband and father.

The suicide note, the source said has been given to the police while the body of the deceased was deposited at the mortuary.

The deceased, who hailed from Ihie Ndume in Umuahia North Local Government Area of the state was said to have been agonizing over the difficulties he had been facing to fend for his family, including his inability to buy the wrapper his wife requested for in celebration of the Mother’s Sunday.

The Nigerian troops say they have yet again conquered cattle rustlers and armed bandits who have continued to terrorise the country.

According to a statement issued by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, the military spokesperson, many of the rustlers escaped during the attacks, but they were not without gunshot wounds.
The statement obtained also revealed that there was a heavy presence of ammunitions in the camp of the armed bandits after the conquest.

The statement reads: “In continuation of the efforts of getting rid of the menace of cattle rustling, armed banditry and other criminality in the country generally and in the north west geo-political region, under the auspices of Operation SHARAN DAJI, troops of 1 Brigade Nigerian Army, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police in Zamfara State, have carried out a joint clearance operation in Maru today. “Although most of the targeted suspected cattle rustlers and armed bandits have escaped, the joint team recovered substantial quantity of arms and ammunitions in the area.

“It is equally believed some of the criminals escaped with gun shot wounds. “The team is still combing the general area for such persons. Consequently, the public in Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and Kaduna States in particular, are please requested to report any suspicious persons especially those with gun shot wounds.”

This is not the first time the Nigerian troops are overcoming the armed bandits in recent times, as they also recently killed some of them during a raid in the northern part of the country.

 

Meanwhile, one of the herdsmen responsible for the killings in Enugu, has confessed that the massacre was planned in Kogi state, as over 100 of them were invited from several parts of the country to perpetrate the act.

During his confession to the Kogi state police command, Zure, who had been initially released on bail after the prime suspect in the kidnap case for which he was nabbed, was rearrested when the police watched a gory video of the Enugu massacre on his phone.

Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development on Monday apprehended a middle-aged man, Adeyemi Adebayo who specialized in serving fake demolition notices and stop-work orders on buildings under construction in exchange for inducement.
In a statement released by Lagos State Chief Public Affairs officer in the Ministry of Physical Plannning and Urban Developmetn, Shina Odunuga, the fake town planner Adebayo, who claimed to hail from Osun State and reside in Anuoluwapo area of Ilogbo in Ogun State, was said to have been apprehended after serving demolition notice on a building under construction in Lagos State.
 
The workers on sight of the building had alerted the officials of the Ministry shortly after Adebayo served the demolition notice, after which the suspect was caught with four fake identity cards of the Lagos State Government.
While being interrogated by newsmen, the suspect said he was employed as a project staff by the Lagos State Ministry of The Environment about eight years ago, but was laid off without any benefit four years after.
 
The suspect, who claimed to be married but divorced, added that ever since being laid off, he had been working with his friend’s junior brother.
He said:
“I have worked in the various sectors in the Ministry of The Environment. We are project staff and we worked there for good eight years. I was relieved of my job about four years ago. We came in and we worked in various areas and we are being told to go for staff audit. They just laid us off without any benefit and they did not collect their identity cards from us.
“The only thing I have to say is that when someone worked for government, they should at least recognize the efforts of such person. You cannot just lay off people like that without anything. We all know the situation of the country. I know I don’t have the authority to do what I have been doing but I have been known with the Ministry of Environment,” the suspect narrated.
 
Briefing newsmen on how the suspect was apprehended, spokesperson of the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Adeshina Odunuga said Adebayo had been going about impersonating as a Town Planner with the Ministry before he was caught on the fateful day.
Odunuga said:
“This is a gentle man that was arrested while he was impersonating as an officer of the Ministry. He goes about to mark buildings, serve demolition notices, serve stop-work orders and collect money and other form of inducement in exchange for that. Sometimes he goes about serving demolition notices and threatening owners of buildings all around. He was arrested by officials of the Ministry who got to a site and was told one of them has just left. He was called back and that was how he was arrested.”
 
The suspect has since been handed over to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Nigerian police for further investigation.

Gov Shettima Asked To Make Public Details Of All Donations
Challenged On N600m Monthly Expenditure Claims
There have been conflicting reports of the actual donations received on behalf of internally Displaced Persons, IDPs by the Borno State Government, just as controversies continue to trail the utilization of the donations, which do not seem to make any impact on the lives of the supposed beneficiaries.
While the Borno State Government keeps details of the total receipts to its chest, claiming to be spending N600 million monthly on the upkeep of 22 IDP camps scattered around Maiduguri the state capital, citizens are beginning to demand explanations on the whereabouts of the money collected in the names of IDPs from several donors, including Dangote group and others.
Records indicate that, Chairman of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote was amongst the first donors towards the upkeep of IDPs, but to date no tangible explanations could be given on how his N2 Billion donation was blown, Similarly, former Central Bank Governor, now Emir of Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is still demanding explanations on what happened to his N100 million donation,
Investigations reveal that, the Republic of Australia made a donation of N900 million through the State Governor, Kashim Shettima, the whereabouts of which is still controversial, even as Saudi Arabia’s N750 Million as well as several other donations by Arab countries and the middle east have not yet been accounted for.
Findings on the average monthly spending on IDPs revealed that only about N40 million was being spent, and not N600 million as being claimed by the state Governor, and that even, the N40 Million for their upkeep is being deducted from the monthly allocations of affected Local Government Councils at source, while State Government votes for the purposes end up in private pockets.
While the EFCC remains on the trails of alleged diverted Local Government funds, officials of the Borno State Government have been reported to be buying properties all over Nigeria.
This is even as a Non Governmental Organization, Borno Transparency Initiative, BOTI, has raised the alarm over the mismanagement of funds donated through the Borno State Government for the upkeep of internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, and the rehabilitation of communities devastated by insurgency across the state.
Coordinator and Public Relations Officer of the organization, Inusa Yerima Pulka and Bakura Bukar Kaleri, BBK, who were on a visit to nationalTRAIL office in Abuja revealed that, the state Government has failed to account for the N2 billion donated by Dangote Group in 2013, N900 million from the Australian, n750 Million from Saudi Arabia, N300 Million from Lebanon amongst other donations from other Arab Countries, the Middle East, and good spirited individuals.
According to them, IDPs are wallowing in squalor, disease and starvation, while the State Governor, Kashim Shettima is busy buying property in Dubai, US, Abuja, Maiduguri, Kaduna Kano and other places, with public funds, even as he pretends to care for the displaced persons.
In promising to publish details of donations so far received by the Borno State Government on behalf of IDPs in addition to what the federal Government has been giving, the political pressure group challenged governor Shettima to publish his own facts about expenditures on IDPs as against money received on behalf of IDPs for public scrutiny.
“To date, nobody has explained how the N2 Billion donated by Dangote to the IDPs was squandered and nobody seems to be asking questions. We know that Middle East countries have made donations, good spirited people have given donations, yet we do not see what is being done with such funds. The situation of IDPs is worsening, and the Borno state Government claims to be taking care of them. It is time to talk”, Kaleri explained.

Nigerians in Germany took to the streets over the weekend -to protest against the unlawful massacre of innocent civilians in Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani local government area of Enugu State by Fulani herdsmen. The Nigerian community in Germany also sympathized with the people of Enugu State of the great loss -as they urged the government to do something to prevent further attacks from the herdsmen.

This is quite irritating. A student was shocked beyond limits after finding a rat in the dinner she bought & took out from a college canteen in central China's Hunan province on May 7. According to the Daily Mail, it was alleged that of the President’s declared assets, he had at least £1m in the Bank along with 5 houses and 2 plots of land.

Now according to News Agency Naija Standard, the attack was initiated by powerful political enemies in the hope to seriously discredit Buhari.

The enemies include Madueke Diezani and James Ibori.

Their Plan A was to send emissaries to President Buhari to give a soft-landing to traumatized Diezani so that she could return all the money stolen under her stewardship to Nigerian government and be left off the hook regarding any intending prosecution. You could recall that after President Buhari was sworn in, he had traveled to London, and Diezani personally made reported frantic moves to make peace with Nigeria’s leader which was rebuffed. She had sent few other people to the presidency ever after, but Buhari noted for his passion against corruption, and openly told Nigerians accountability and honesty are the only ways to good governance. Buhari’s response then was that those who misappropriated billions of Naira belonging to Nigeria’s state oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation would soon be prosecuted.Not long after that Diezani became restless, her nightmares seem to have come. After several sleepless nights thinking of what would become of her status with her falling health fast deteriorating, she was prompted upon by her family and close friends to continually undergo medication for her Cancer problems, after her release byUK National Crimes Agency, alongside four other people.
Ibori’s circle of friends in Britain and Nigeria also critically looked at the trial, conviction of 13 year jail term sentence served on their benefactor, and were hopeful that at the end of his UK Prison Term, he would be heralded to tumultuous celebration in his hometown in Oghara, oil rich Delta State. But when recent reports of Panama Papers scandal in one of their biggest leak hit the press globally, Ibori’s name popped up showing how he enlisted his immediate family as beneficiaries of the offshore companies and foundations with evidential documentation confirming his secret offshore tax havens to hide some of the funds he looted from the state’s treasury.
Going by rising phobia of likely further probe on the Panama Scandal of Ibori in Nigeria after he would have completed his UK jail term, it became very easy for these close friends of the convicted former Governor to accept the dangling proposals by Diezani’s contacts in Britain to frustrate the anti-corruption war of Buhari. So, Plan B was hatched. Daily Mail, London simply came handy for these politicians because of its hard stance against Buhari’s administration since elected as President of Nigeria last year.
In a calculated attempt, a falsehood story laced in tissues of lies without any evidential documentation best fit for ‘arm-chair reportage’ that could well be celebrated in yellow-journalism found its way to the front page of Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper today, just few days to the departure of President Buhari to London on Tuesday May 10, 2016 to participate in the international Anti-Corruption Summit. The story has been verified to be fake, cooked-up to cause disaffection among British citizens and bring about hatred against Nigeria. No single traceable fact in the Daily Mail reports could warrant a publication in any College Press Journal. The ridiculous story showed how empty and bereft of investigative news Daily Mail has fallen. It reveals the standard of ‘beer-parlor journalism’ being practiced by editorial team of Daily Mail.
Naija Standard can tell you authoritatively that Daily Mail further exposed themselves to opprobrium by alleging that Buhari had over One Million Pounds in his bank account. What is the name of the bank? What is the bank account number? All lies indeed. No truth in the report that is now dubbed a fallacy and journalism of disrepute on social media.
As reported in Daily Mail that Hanan (Aisha), Buhari’s 16 year old daughter traveled on first class from London to Nigeria is laughable. Many Editors fly on first class air tickets to media conferences and seminars worldwide. Probably the anonymous writer of the article (who hid his identity) have no sound information or correct dossier on Buhari: he is a retired General in Nigerian Army, a former Head of State, a former Petroleum Minister and incumbent Nigerian President who has never soiled his hands in the cookie jar of corruption. Journalism ethics says that if you are in doubt of any story, kindly leave out. If Daily Mail had no news to fill their pages, they should have closed down or used cartoon stories as fillers.
Plans to Stir Public Demonstration in UK Anti-Corruption Summit May 11-12
Latest information reaching Naija Standard showed that these politicians in their desperate plans to fight back at the Nigerian institution have concluded plans to stir up demonstration by some placards-carrying Nigerians and British citizens at the Anti-Corruption Summit on May 11-12 so that members of the International Community could begin to doubt the sincere war on corruption being fought day and night by President Buhari. Their aim is to sway empathy and outright disconnect between the British and Nigerian Governments such that the earlier planned 250Million Pounds to be given to Nigeria by next year for development should be canceled.
As at press time, no official statement has been issued by President Buhari’s media team on this matter.

No fewer that five people were feared killed after a warehouse belonging to the Nigerian Port Authority collapsed in Port Harcourt on Saturday evening.

According to the Punch, the collapsed warehouse was an old building used for storing Dangote salt.



The newspaper said an employee of the NPA who revealed the tragic incident on Sunday said that five bodies were retrieved from the rubble.

“It happened yesterday (Saturday) around 5pm and five persons, who were trapped in the rubble, were found dead,” the source said.

Another unnamed worker in the NPA, Area A, explained that those killed were inside and around the toilet and bathroom of the warehouse. he said many of those inside the warehouse were spared because the wall fell outward.

“Those that died were around the bathroom and toilet area and the walls that fell affected them. Their bodies were found when the people began to open up blocks and search the rubble,” the source added.
