Talented Yoruba movie actress cum producer Memunat Yunusa popularly known as Mimiano has survived close encounter with death this month in a serious road accident in Oyo town, Oyo State, Nigeria.
Mimiano was involved in a serious car accident yesterday Wednesday 20th, November, 2013 on her way to a movie location in the said town.

According to a reliable source, the actress experienced break failure in her newly bought Honda CRV before she ran into a building and hit the car on the compound's fence.

“They cannot skate on the highways. It is a violation of the traffic law 2010. I implore all parents to call their children and their wards to order because any child found skating on the highway will be arrested and will be brought to justice. It must stop today. Skating on the highways has to stop now. The danger is too much and it is the responsibility of the government to safe lives,”

 

On skating, Fashola said he noticed that the youths had also taken to skating because the road is safe, saying government was not going to discourage them but that they should do that in designated places like recreation centres, stadia and others.

On the position of the government concerning road development in FESTAC Town, Fashola explained that the state government was having an issue with the Federal government, pointing out that the taxes and land charges being collected by the FHA were being sent to Abuja.

“I have said that the Federal Housing Authority is an anathema to the current constitution. The Federal Government does not own land, so, I don’t see how it can have a housing authority. But it was created during the military and now that we are in a civilian dispensation, as I made a case on Saturday when we were in Sokoto, this is one of the laws that the National Assembly should simply amend or repeal to bring them in conformity with the current dispensation,” he said.

On LASTMA, the governor pointed out that its primary responsibility was to keep the state traffic moving, stressing that “this is the reason why the agency exists. Arresting traffic offenders is secondary. If making an arrest will increase the traffic, let the offenders go. I say this not because I don’t want law breakers to be apprehended and brought to justice. But law breakers cannot undermine our main objective.

“The longer people stay more in traffic, the more money is wasted and fuel are burnt and when people stay more in traffic, this leads to increase in the price of goods in the state. But with a moving traffic, price of goods will be stable.”

Fashola explained that the challenge of managing traffic in Lagos State necessitated the need for the meeting with the Special Traffic Mayors, while stressing the need to pay attention to road safety measures for the betterment of all.

“Over the last few days, we have begun to experience traffic gridlock within the state. There are couples of factors that we all must be aware. We promised to address inner roads and at the moment we have commenced work on 200 inner roads in the state. It shouldn’t be surprising that the construction is causing traffic in the state because these are areas where people are already living especially on Joel Ogunnaike, Kodesho and others.

“The access to those roads will definitely be impaired. That is part of the problem. Also, we are getting closer to the Christmas and New Year. At this time, there is heavy movement of people at the same time on the road,” he explained.

An eight year old girl has become the youngest person ever to be divorced in India after she was married off aged just four. Fatima Mangre was given away by her father Anil, from the Shravasti district of Uttar Pradesh state, in an arranged a marriage with 10-year-old Arjun Bakridi.

However when the boy arrived four years later to take his new bride away, Anil said he wanted the girl to wait until she was 18 before leaving.

He said: 'I finally realised that this practice of marrying off daughters so young was wrong and that she should have a childhood, and that it was my duty to provide that.' However Arjun's father Dipak was unhappy with the decision, and an argument broke out after which Anil filed for divorce.

The state government of India's has called for an inquiry into the incident that happened last week at Nakhi village in the Shravasti district of India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

It ordered the probe after the New Delhi-based National Commission for Women (NCW) member Nirmala Samant sent a letter, demanding details of the divorce and threatening action against the parents of the girl and the boy. She said:

'This is a scandal, we need more details before taking action. The girl's father must answer why he married her off at four years old and the boy's father must answer why he agreed to such a marriage and then went to demand the girl when she is barely eight years old.

'This is insensitive, controversial and objectionable,' she added. However Fatima's father has already written to NCW, saying he should be pardoned because he stopped his daughter from being taken away by her in-laws.

'I have already admitted my mistake. Social pressures are high in our village. But the marriage has been annulled. I have admitted it was wrong to marry her off so early,' he said in a handwritten note.

He added: 'I now want to make things right. I want to give my daughter a good childhood. I will do everything to protect her.' Mr Bakridi has gone into hiding following the altercation. According to UNICEF, over 32.9 percent of the girls are married against the national average of 22.1 percent below the legally permissible age of 18 in the state.

The Shravasti district accounts for the majority underage weddings in India where the female literacy is just 19 per cent.

 According to a report by Thisday, a High Court in Effurun, Delta State, has sentenced a 24-year-old secondary school student, Moses Akatugba, to death by hanging for stealing mobile phones and  recharge cards. Read the report below and tell us if you think the sentence is appropriate or too harsh

    "Akatugba was convicted on a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery in contravention of Section 6 (b) and punishable under section 1 (2) (a) of the Robbery and Firearms  (Special Provisions) Act Cap R11 Volume 14 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

    The prosecution told the court that the convict with others now at large “robbed one Mrs. Akpor Mazino of the sum of N113,930, three phone handsets, 54 various denominations of MTN recharge vouchers, 28 Airtel vouchers and 25 Glo vouchers valued at over N100,000 at No. 30 NNPC Housing Complex Road,
 Ekpan.”

The victim in her evidence gave a vivid account of how she was robbed of the items at her shop at gunpoint.

An Asaba High Court also yesterday sentenced a 30-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Paul Nwanegbo to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour for robbing a female passenger of her telephone handset. The incident, according to prosecution took place along Direct Labour Agency Road, Asaba, on October 5, 2011 before the ban on operation of commercial motorcyclists in Asaba metropolis and other designated cities.

The female passenger, Amaka Okafor told the court that on “realising the gun was a toy, I resisted him but he overpowered me after biting me with his teeth and snatched my phone from me.”

Ghanaian Actress Nikki Samonas has for the first time opened up about some controversial X-rated scenes with Nigerian ‘bad boy’ actor Jim Iyke.

In an exclusive interview with UTV, she denied allegations that she had s*x with Nigerian actor Jim Iyke in a movie as it is being rumoured about.

“Yes! Jim Iyke and I have done a lot of movies together. It is through Jim Iyke that I shot my first movie in Nigeria. Yes we starred in a particular movie and a movie is a movie. It is make believe so whatever you saw in the movie is make believe. We did it that way to show people that things like this happen but it doesn’t mean it really happened”.

About what went on between her and Jim Iyke both on and off the cameras she emphasized was only for the time they were working together like actors do. There was nothing between them.

“After the movie came out there were rumours that we were dating. No! There was absolutely nothing going between us. I never dated Jim Iyke and I never had s*x with Jim Iyke I haven’t done anything like that with him, whatever I have done with Jim Iyke is strictly business so what you see us doing in the movie is make believe”.

Asked if this movie affected her in anyway; she said most of her family members, friends and even the media felt disappointed when they saw the video. This was because they thought it was a private affair which has been recorded and leaked on the internet but she tried to explain to those who complained to her that it was just a scene from a movie.

As to whether she is still close to Jim Iyke, Nikki disclosed that it’s been a while since she communicated with him adding that the movie brought some misunderstanding between them which she refused to give details of.

The movie titled “My first wife” raised a lot of controversies after it was released some years back with critics bemoaning how Nikki allowed the Nollywood actor to fondle her body and the extent of exposure all in the name of acting.

Pop superstar Rihanna is being sued for more than £70,000 by a business in a row over the bill for her grandmother’s funeral.

The ‘Umbrella’ singer arranged a lavish send-off when Clara “Dolly” Braithwaite died of lung cancer in her native Barbados.

But more than a year later the star, 25, is being accused of only paying £22,000 of the £94,000 cost she was billed.

Funeral directors Downes and Wilson have lodged a civil suit in the High Court in Barbados in her real name Robyn Rihanna Fenty demanding the rest of the money Rihanna’s lawyers insist she does not owe it.

The funeral home reportedly conducted the church service and all burial arrangements, which included retrofitting the Emmanuel Baptist Church in St Michael, buying the grave at Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens in Christ Church.

The funeral had included tents, limousines giant screens and exotic flower arrangements.

Earlier this year Rihanna won a £3.3million High Court battle against fashion giant Topshop for selling a T-shirt emblazoned with her photograph.

When contacted by the Sunday People on Friday Barbados legal firm James Wilson and Company, representing the funeral home, said: “We will not be making any further comment.”

A United Methodist minister from Pennsylvania who was convicted under church law of officiating at his son’s same-sex wedding ceremony was suspended for 30 days Tuesday and told he will lose his credentials if he violates any of the church’s rules in that time.

The same jury of fellow pastors that convicted Rev. Frank Schaefer on Monday of breaking his vows also told him he must surrender his credentials if he can’t reconcile his new calling to the gay, lesbian, bisegxwal and transgender community with the laws from the church’s Book of Discipline.

Schaefer told reporters afterward that he had no intention of changing his mind and said he expects to lose his credentials in 30 days.

Before the punishment was announced, Schaefer, who was convicted for officiating at his son’s 2007 wedding ceremony in Massachusetts, told the jury Tuesday that he is unrepentant and refused to promise he wouldn’t perform more gay unions.

Rather than beg for mercy, the pastor upped the stakes.

The church “needs to stop judging people based on their segxwal orientation,” he told jurors. “We have to stop the hate speech. We have to stop treating them as second-class Christians.”

After the jury pronounced its sentence, Schaefer’s supporters began overturning chairs in the courtroom — symbolizing the biblical story of Jesus overturning the tables of the money changers — and held an impromptu communion service.

Schaefer’s trial rekindled debate within the nation’s largest mainline Protestant denomination over church policies on homosegxwality and same-sex marriage. The denomination accepts gay and lesbian members, but it rejects the practice of homosegxwality as “incompatible with Christian teaching.”

Schaefer donned a rainbow-colored stole on the witness stand and told jurors it symbolized his commitment to the cause.

“I will never be silent again,” he said, as some of his supporters wept in the gallery. “This is what I have to do.”

Jon Boger, who filed the initial complaint against Schaefer, was outraged by the pastor’s recalcitrance. The career Naval officer grew up in Zion United Methodist Church of Iona, the church that Schaefer has led for 11 years.

Bogus Bride Caught Out When She ‘Flinched’ As Fake Husband Touched Her Knee During Wedding Ceremony

A bogus bride was caught out because she 'flinched' when her phoney husband-to-be touched her knee in a register office.

Emilia Ginova, 22, was jailed today for posing as a blushing bride ready to walk up the aisle with her groom.

But a court heard Ginova had only first seen Nigerian student Louis Esene on the day of the service - and was being paid £3,000 to take part in the sham marriage.

She was caught out by an eagle-eyed registrar who spotted her shocked reaction when Esene, 28, reached out to touch her leg.

Registration officer Donna Davies said: 'The groom tried to touch the bride’s knee but she looked very uncomfortable.
'She flinched and there was no interaction at all. I knew it was a scam.'


The marriage was stopped - and the pair were both arrested at the register office in Pontypridd, South Wales.
It was later revealed that Esene wanted to stay in Britain because his visa had run out.

The court was told a friend recruited Ginova - who is a Slovakian-born Roma - and was four months pregnant by another man at the time of the wedding.
Esene and Ginova pleaded guilty to conspiracy to facilitate a breach of immigration law.

Prosecutor Rachel Knight said: 'The registrar was suspicious of Esene and Ginova when they had notified their intent to wed as they could not communicate with each other.

'She did not find it convincing in any way.

'It was part and parcel of a plan to circumvent immigration rules, which would allow him to work, access to the NHS, social security and housing benefit.'

Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court heard the bogus bride and groom met first on November 22 last year - and spent the morning shopping for rings and a wedding dress.

But the court heard Esene lost his temper when Ginova failed to 'learn her lines properly' - and threatened he could put 'anyone in a dress'.

Both were jailed - Ginova, of Chatham, for 18 months and Esene, of Pontypridd, for 21 months.

Esene will be deported to Nigeria at the end of his sentence

Judge Richard Twomlow said: 'It strikes at the integrity of the importance of marriage.'

A Colombian baby came back from the dead more than 10 hours after being sent to the morgue. The tiny tot – now named Milagros (Miracles) – was born prematurely in Quibdo in the Pacific state of Choco in the early hours of Wednesday, November 13, last week.

Her mother Jenny Hurtado was just 27 weeks pregnant when she was rushed to the San Francisco de Asis hospital at 2:45am

Medics performed a C-section but, unable to find signs of life, declared the newborn deceased just 35 minutes later – at 3:20am.

Taken to the morgue, the baby was placed inside a box. Staff then waited for her fisherman father to collect her.

But, on the father’s arrival and as the attendant handed the baby over, they recognised signs of life and heard a soft cry.

Realizing the infant was still alive, workers rushed her on board a plane to the Santa Teresita del Niño Jesus clinic in the capital Bogota.

She remains there, accompanied by her aunt Reyes Hinestroza, receiving treatment for her underdeveloped lungs in intensive care.

Her mother remains in Quibdo, where she is recovering from the ordeal.

Specialist doctor Javier Zagarra told Semana that the mistaken death declaration could be down to a soft heart beat at the time of the birth.

‘In some cases the heart movements are not perceptible even though the newborn is alive, they can declare it dead,’ he said.

‘When they wrap the baby in a sheet, upon receiving warmth, the baby can then revitalize,’ he added.

Ghanaian actress Luckie Lawson has been blessed with a second child and it is a cute baby girl she calls-Princess Eliana.

The happy mother took to instagram some hours ago to share the exciting news with the world. With a photo of the new born, she wrote;

Accidents on Benin-Ore Expressway caused by robbery, says FRSC

Benin – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Edo, on Monday said the multiple accidents involving six trucks were caused by armed robbery at KM 33 on the Benin-Ore Expressway on Saturday night.

The FRSC Toll Gate Unit Commander, Mr Adewale Ameen, however, said in Benin on Monday that no one died in the accidents.

Ameen said six trucks involved in the accident were however burnt. “As I speak with you, the fire is still raging and our men are there controlling traffic.

“The robbery caused a container to fall across the road. Two other unsuspecting trucks got to the scene and rammed into the container.

“The unfortunate thing was that a truck laden with 33 litres of petrol rammed into the other trucks and caught fire.

“We have blocked the Ore side of the express way and diverted traffic to the Benin lane.

“We appeal to motorists from the Lagos axis to go through Ogbemudia farms’’, he said. (NAN
