Gunmen on Thursday [Nov. 14] killed four policemen who were travelling to Anambra State for election duties.

The policemen were said to be part of those deployed from Osun State for the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State.

It was learnt that the truck they were travelling in was attacked by gunmen at the Benin bypass. Four of them were killed immediately.

It could not however be ascertained whether the attackers were political thugs or armed robbers.

Though effort to confirm the death from the Edo State Police Commissioner, Mr. Foluso Adebanjo, was fruitless, a senior police officer told our correspondent that the command had not been briefed about the incident.

5366  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / EFCC Arrests Delta State Auditor General For Local Government Over Falsification on: 14-11-2013 10:45 AM

Mary Njokanma

For alleged refusal to go on retirement after reaching and passing the mandatory 35 years of service as well as falsification of documents, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) South-East Zone, on Thursday arrested Ms. Brown Mary Njokanma, the Delta state auditor general for local governments.

A source in the EFCC Enugu zonal office who pleaded for anonymity told SaharaReporters that Ms. Njokanma was arrested following a petition against her, but that she was later granted bail.

“We told her clearly that she was still in our hook and we shall get back to her because the evidence brought forward by the petitioner against her are overwhelming. A woman who came to service with level four and through the service went to school and came back and rose to that position [should not] deliberately refuse to retire,” the source said.

“With available evidence and records with us shows that the woman was actually employed in 1973 in the defunct Midwestern state. Our findings have also shown that the Bendel Development and Planning Authority where she first got her employment in 1973 [had] been in existence since 1960 in the defunct Midwestern state,” the source added.

The petition was written by a nongovernmental organization called Excellent World Foundation, and entitled “Fraudulent and Illegal Collection of Salaries By Mrs M. Brown Njokanma, Auditor General, Local Government, Delta State.”  Signed by its executive director, Mr. Michael Enahoro Michael, and obtained by SaharaReporters, it accused the supposedly retired auditor general of flouting civil service rules and falsification of documents to perpetually remain in office although her tenure had elapsed.

The petition also accused Ms. Njokanma of fraudulently and illegally collecting salaries and entitlements when she ought to have retired in 2008 according to service rules, and appealed to the anti-graft agency to compel her to proceed on retirement as well as order her to refund all the salaries collected illegally from the coffers of Delta State.

The petition underlined Ms. Njokanma’s date of employment in the civil service in November 1973 under the Midwestern state, albeit as Miss Mary Aizebioje, her maiden name. It asserted that Miss Mary Aizebioje was the same person as Ms. Brown Mary Njokanma.

Elements of the petition read as follows:

“The said Mrs. Brown M. Njokanma has severally falsified her date of birth and that of her appointment to continue in this fraudulent act. Contrary to the evidence, a senior staff list was published on April 1, 1987 (official document 5 of 1987) where it was fraudulently and wrongly stated that her date of birth and date of first appointment are 12th, December, 1957 and 14th, August, 1981 respectfully.

“Again in the Delta state government senior staff list of 31st, December, 2006, Mrs. Njokanma fraudulently and wrongly stated her date of birth and first appointment to be 12/12/1957 and 14/8/1983. Mrs. Brown M. Njokanma in the falsification of her date of birth and date of first appointment is to avert possible retirement and to gain pecuniary benefits from the Delta state government, her employer.”

“She sat for the confirmation and promotion in 1982 which shows she was employed in 1973 and couldn’t have been employed in 1981 and [written] the examination in 1982 and her date of first appointment confirmed to take effect from October 1, 1975.” stressing that Mrs. Njokanma having been employed in 1973 ought to have retired since 2008 as the mandatory 35 years in service and anything contrary is a fraud and illegal collection of salaries not due to her since 2008 till date.

SaharaReporters had before now obtained a letter dated November 13, 1973 that indicated that Ms. Njokanma was hired by the then Bendel State civil service in 1973. Her first posting was to the then Bendel Development and Planning Authority, Benin City. A source familiar with civil service rules and procedures told SaharaReporters that she was due for mandatory retirement as far back as November 2008.

Another letter obtained by SaharaReporters, dated February 16, 1976 and issued by the Bendel Development and Planning Authority (reference No. CPA 315/9) confirmed Ms. Njokanma’s appointment. Other documents reveal that Ms. Njokanma applied for in-service training variously on September 9, 1976, February 3, 1977 and October 23, 1978 – and all were granted.

A source confided in SaharaReporters: “Every month Mrs. Njokanma collects N570, 000 as salary outside other entitlements. From November 2008, when she was supposed to retire, till date, she has received over 31 million Naira. So many letters have been written to various offices, but the more all these letters are written the more she carries millions of naira to bribe her way to continue to stay in office.”

An impeccable source disclosed that because of the special interest of the permanent secretary, Directorate of Establishment and Pension; the head of the state’s civil service; the chairman of the civil service commission and some other top government officials in the matter, they continued aiding and abetting the auditor general to evade retirement.

Contacted by phone, Mrs. Njokanma confirmed her arrest and said that she was given a clean bill of health by ICPC through a letter to the state government but when asked for a copy of the letter she was unable to provide it.

“Yes I was at EFCC and I gave them my position too and they promised to get back to me again. The issue has gone to court before and the court struck it out, we have gone to EFCC and they said my tenure is valid and I don't know why they are still dragging this matter.”

Los Angeles – Beyoncé has broken a string of records for her tour in Australia and New Zealand.

The Halo singer grossed over $37m for her Mrs Carter Show World Tour last month in which she managed to sell a staggering 220 000 tickets for 18 shows.

The figures show the 32-year-old performer – who started out in girl group Destiny’s Child – has broken attendance records at the Vector Arena in Auckland, New Zealand in addition to Australia’s Perth Arena, which further cements her legendary status as a solo star.

Michael Coppel, president of tour management company, Live Nation Australasia, gushed: “I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked with Beyoncé since the first Destiny’s Child tour in 2000, but this tour has been an absolute standout in terms of the showcasing her unparalleled talent, energy and joy for performing in one of the most spectacular productions ever to visit this country.”

Beyoncé isn’t the only singer to have benefited from touring in Australia, as Pink also netted $37m from her concerts in the country earlier this year, while Bruce Springsteen racked up $23m from his Wrecking Ball tour.

Popular actor O.C Ukeje and dramatic/theatre artiste Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju are currently in a romantic relationship, NET has learnt.

We are told that the pair who has been seen one too many times in the past few months are madly in love with each other even though they’ve been keeping it under the wraps.

It is believed that the lovebirds met on the set of Charles Novia‘s award winning comedy flick ‘Alan Poza’, back in 2012 and grew fond of each other since then.

‘They got quite close on the set of the movie. But they’ve been very careful to keep it on the down low’, a source told our correspondent.

Speaking with Akindoju, the actress denied the romantic affair, categorically stating that they were just ‘very close friends’. ‘We are just friends, there is nothing between us romantically’, Lala laughed as she spoke with our correspondent. Sources tell us Lala once dated Red Media’s Chude Jideonwo and was at a point very close friends with music producer Cobhams Asuquo.

NET also spoke with Ukeje about the love affair. He also denied it, reaffirming what Lala said, ‘We are just close friends’.

Ukeje and Lala are currently in Calabar attending the on-going Africa International Film Festival.

Ukeje, who is fast becoming the leading man in Nollywood started out as a stage performer, shot into limelight and won the Amstel Malta Box Office (AMBO) reality television show in 2007. He went on to win the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) for the ‘Best Upcoming Actor‘ in 2008. His growing profile continued when he won ‘Best Lead Actor’ at the Nigeria Movie Awards (NMA) in 2013.

Akindoju who has a degree in Insurance from the University of Lagos, ventured into the world of dramatic arts way back in 2005 and made her break when she won the Future Awards for ‘Best Actress’ in 2010. She’s been involved in the highest tie of drama and theatre in Nigeria. Having set up her own production outfit, the ‘Make It Happen Productions’, Lala has been able to set up ground-breaking initiatives in the industry – Open Mic Theatre, The V Monologues – and is currently the casting director for Ndani TV while she teaches at Joke Silva’s LUFODO, a school for the arts.

5371  Forum / The Buzz Central / Designer Emmy Collins And Linda Ikeji’s Sister In Twitter Battle on: 14-11-2013 09:22 AM

Emmy Collins and Laura Ikeji

Popular designer and ‘part-time’ blogger Emmy Collins is well noted for his overly controversial write-ups, and his inclination to throw jabs at unsuspecting ‘victims’ on his blog ‘Diary by Emmy’.

However, the high class designer may have bitten more than he could chew with his latest post about renowned blogger Linda Ikeji’s younger sister, Laura.

Recently, Emmy took to his blog in his usual manner to throw shots at some celebrities like Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Dayo ‘D1′ Adeneye, Uti Nwachukwu, Ebube Nwagbo, Rukky Sanda, Juliet Ibrahim, and a couple of others, pointing out flaws in their outfits and dress sense.

The list of ‘victims’ at the receiving end of the popular designer’s tongue-lash also included the younger Ikeji whose offence according to the part-time blogger was  ‘posting an invoice of her sister’s (Linda) purchases from Dubai’ on her Twitter and Instagram page.

In Emmy’s opinion and going by the write up posted on Monday, November 11, the act was ‘tacky’ and a ‘proof that some people will always remain poor regardless of how much money they acquire.’

The designer went further to suggest that Laura suffered from ‘poverty mentality’ and ‘bushwomanism’.

Not one to take insults lying on her back, Laura went on the attack on twitter, tweeting insults at the designer, and calling him a failed designer.

‘Failed designer, nobody wears ur clothes. Other designers make millions from making clothes, u turned blogger to diss ppl.’ She tweeted.

Laura also went further to add, ‘Nigga get ur gay ass together Biko. Look me wella, I nor fear U. What can u write abt me? Dat I’m ugly?Huh? Stale! 25yrs late.’

So far, Emmy’s only response to the series of tweets is referring to her as an ‘Idiot’.

5374  Forum / The Buzz Central / huh: Oluchi Orlandi Insults Journalists At Show’s Premiere on: 14-11-2013 09:09 AM

Less than three weeks after Nigerian international model, Oluchi Onweagba-Orlandi launched a series of attacks on Twitter and called her fellow Africans animals, she, on Friday 8 November, re-enacted her saucy side as she insulted a group of journalists who were at the premiere of her new show, Africa’s Next Top Model.
Oluchi, who was the chief hostess at the weekend event held at Pravada Lounge on Victoria Island, Lagos, created an ugly drama as she snubbed the media reps who had asked to be treated well after being made to stand while others were on their seats during the delayed press conference.

The whole drama started after the model, who came far late into the event, caused the organisers to move the earlier scheduled media briefing into the noisy main hall of the night club.
The journalists were not comfortable with the arrangement considering the boisterous crowd and noise.
After about three questions and her impolite responses, the newsmen stopped  asking questions. Oluchi sensed their coldness and then asked if there were further questions, to which one of the journalists expressed disgust over the humiliation they had been subjected to.
Rather than apologise, Oluchi angrily muttered: “I am only here to party and not to be answering questions.” And she walked away leaving the angry journalists in the middle of the club. When the organisers went to confer with her, she remained adamant.
when the whole scenario  tried to intervene and iron out the issue,Oluchi threw caution to the winds when she told the repoter, “Don’t touch me please,” when she was about to be stopped from walking away for the second time.

“Oluchi should be world class…she should be able to control herself in public no matter how upset she is. It’s called anger management,” said a concerned guest who observed the drama at the event.
Oluchi has a record of bad temperament and is said to be hostile to journalists. That was what manifested when she threw caution to the winds with her recent outburst on Twitter.
Her series on Twitter read:

“I am disgusted. DISGUSTED by human behaviour…Africans be like “no funds no meetings”… MONEY is not the root of evil. “Greedy Humans” are the root of evil… Hopefully I won’t throw up soon. Bunch of inconsiderate animals!!!!…They know price tag of everything and the VALUE of nothing!!!…Incompetent idiots. Ugly souls. Monsters in human forms!…They won’t let me enjoy my beauty sleep!”

And she got a lot of bashing for her coarse tweets.
One Akindele wrote then: “This girl is just a fool…so because you marry Oyibo now, folks back home are now ‘Africans’? Shame, a Nigerian should be propagating this sort of ignorance.

Can’t she just say ‘These guys’ or even be specific? But she would rather tar all Africans, feeding into stereotypes of racists around her. Nonsense, is Africa one country? How many Africans have she met? Village girl made into Face of Africa.”

*Nne why nah?you just unleashed a media war...This is not good for your image at all....I thought you were humble?

World acclaimed engineering and electronics company, Philips has endorsed popular Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Okoro’s upcoming TV Show, Dining With Yvonne Okoro.

The show, scheduled to start airing in 2014 is produced by Yvonne Okoro’s Desamour Company in collaboration with IFACTORY live and supported by Philips.

Philips has offered the actress a juicy package for the show and the decision to do so was to contribute to Ghana’s creative arts industry and Africa’s entertainment in general to otherwise give its consumers, a diverse way of exploring its product lines.
A leading producer of electronics, Phillips product lines are of great value and organized into three main partitions including; Philips Consumer Lifestyle, Philips Healthcare and Philips Lighting.

Yvonne is likely to highlight one of the three product lines on her cooking program.

Philips remains the world’s largest manufacturer of lighting in the world measured by applicable revenues and other great feats.
It does not just sponsor or affiliate with any program on TV or a brand.

It must be a quality production to merit its support and endorsement. Hence, the decision to rally behind the first Ghanaian actress to be featured on BBC Newsday Live and BBC Focus On Africa with Komla Dumor is a good sign to indicate something amazing is coming from Yvonne Okoro.

Creative arts has no doubt a lot to offer in the area of economic gains, therefore the merge with Philip’s brand has the great potentials of reaching new markets and maintain existing ones for the company.

5380  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Bill Gates Says Rebels Hamper Nigeria’s Fight Against Polio on: 13-11-2013 05:39 PM

From left: Alh. Aliko Dangote, President Dangote Group, Mr. Bill Gates, President Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state, during the meeting on Polio Eradication at Lagos House, Ikeja.

Chairman of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gates, has said the unrest in the northern part of the country is hampering his foundation’s awareness and eradication campaign against polio virus in the country.

Gates made the remarks yesterday when he visited Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State in Ikeja. He was accompanied on the visit by  President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and top functionaries of the foundation.

According to him, half of the children in the North-Eastern part of the country were yet to be vaccinated as a result of unrest in the area.

Gates, who commended the leadership role of the governor especially in transforming the state in the last seven years, disclosed that his foundation in partnership with Dangote Foundation had raised $6 billion to fight polio virus in some countries such as Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia and Syria, which he said, were still plagued with the virus.

Gates, however, expressed optimism that the virus would be eradicated, noting that he had partnered the Dangote Foundation to kick polio out of Africa.

Fashola in his remarks at the occassion said:  “The tragedy of the existence of wild polio virus in this part of the world as one of the few parts is something we are not proud of.

“However, I think we are in the march towards eradicating the virus. We have not put the voices of the survivors in the forefront of the campaign and that the voices of the policy-makers have drowned those of the victims themselves.”

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday conferred the prestigious title of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Mr Bill Gates for his developmental efforts in Nigeria.

Jonathan announced the conferment at a meeting of the Presidential Task Force on Polio and Recognition Award held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said Bill Gates would be decorated with his title of CFR in December alongside other beneficiaries of the various national awards.

He particularly commended Bill Gates for his commitment to fighting polio, hunger and providing life saving commodities to humanity across the world.
