«§» 15 January 2013

A pair of identical twins, who were born deaf, have been killed by Belgian doctors after seeking euthanasia when they found out they would also soon go blind.

In a unique case under the country’s euthanasia laws, the 45-year-old brothers, from Antwerp, chose death as they were unable to bear the thought of never seeing one another again.

They were euthanised by doctors at Brussels University Hospital, in Jette, on December 14 by lethal injection after spending their entire lives together.

The unnamed twins who died together: They were euthanised by doctors at Brussels University Hospital, in Jette, on December 14, by lethal injection after spending their entire lives together

Euthanasia is legal under Belgian law if those making the decision can make their wishes clear and are suffering unbearable pain, according to a doctor’s judgement.

The Belgian law differs from that of Switzerland, famous for its Dignitas clinic, where only ‘assisted suicide’ is permitted. This means patients must play an active role in the administration of the drug that ends their lives.

In Belgium, some 1,133 cases of euthanasia – mostly for terminal cancer – were recorded in 2011, about one percent of all deaths in the country, according to official figures.

But this case was unusual as neither twin was suffering extreme physical pain or was terminally ill.
5383  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 6 Policemen, Woman Killed In Lagos Robberies on: 15-01-2013 09:47 AM
«§» 15 January 2013

At least six policemen were killed in separate robbery incidents in different parts of Lagos over the weekend, PUNCH Metro has learnt.

The policemen, it was learnt, were killed during robbery operations.

Also, a mother of four, Lateefah Oyinloye, was killed during one of such incidents.

It was learnt that the robberies occurred in Ajah, Aguda and Oyingbo areas of the state between Saturday and Sunday.

Our correspondent, who visited Oyingbo on Monday, learnt that a robbery occurred on Redemption Way.

It was learnt that a police corporal, identified only as Moroof, was killed alongside Oyinloye.

A resident of Redemption Way, Alhaja Olorun Orerun, told PUNCH Metro that the robbers, numbering about eight, stormed her home around 1:30am on Saturday and robbed her family.

She said, “Around 1:30am, some armed robbers jumped over my fence and entered the house. They robbed us all and riddled the entire house with bullets.

“Two of the robbers stood guard outside the compound while six stayed inside and ransacked the house. One of the robbers wore a mask while the others didn’t.

“They locked me and my husband inside the toilet and opened fire on the door. Luckily, no one in my house was killed.”

A resident, who craved anonymity, said while the robbers were trying to escape, they sighted a policeman in a patrol vehicle and opened fire on him.

He said Oyinloye, who was in a taxi at the time, was hit by a bullet.

He said, “Policemen from Denton Station usually come to our street to raid a joint in the area. A team of policemen had gone on the usual raid but the police corporal (Moroof) remained in the vehicle.

“Unluckily for him, the robbers saw him and immediately opened fire. Oyinloye was in a taxi at the time and was on her way home when she was hit by a bullet.”

Our correspondent observed bullet holes on parked vehicles on the street as well as the gate of Orerun’s house.

Oyinloye’s daughter, Bashirat, who wept as she spoke, said her mother sold drinks and usually closed late.

She said, “My mum sells spirits at Obalende and usually closes late at night. She usually comes home in a taxi. She was killed in the taxi.

“The matter has been reported to Denton Police Station but her corpse has not been released to us. We need to bury her quickly because we are Muslims.”

A family member, who craved anonymity, however lamented that the policemen demanded N34,000 before the corpse would be released.

“The policemen asked for N34,000 for embalmment and other expenses but we are negotiating with them to collect N20,000,” she said.

When contacted, telephone of the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, did not go through.

A Divisional Police Officer, who craved anonymity, however confirmed the death of five policemen.

He said, “Four policemen were killed at Ajah while one was killed at Oyingbo. I am not aware of that of Aguda.

“We had a meeting with the Commissioner of Police today (Monday) and security will be beefed up.”

The senior officer said the policemen killed in Ajah were ambushed in a patrol van by the robbers.

He said, “The area commander received a distress call and ordered his men to the scene. On their way there, the robbers came out from the bush and opened fire on them.

The four of them in the vehicle were killed. Co-incidentally, a traffic policeman and a civilian were within the area at that time. They were also killed.”

The Africa Football Confederation (CAF) has picked the song ‘Sela-Sela’ (Dance Together) by the international artists Wes Madiko and Zahra Universe as the official song of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations, tagged South Africa 2013.

The U.S. media company On-Spot Enterprises, through its record label Arusa Music Entertainment, will handle all the various steps until the release of the single, a local PR firm told the press on Saturday.

“It is our goal to make the official song of the Africa Football Cup of Nations be heard around the world to share in the challenges, triumphs, and spirit of community that comes with the sport of football.

“And especially in this, the largest tournament of football on the African continent,” says Rod On Jr, Chief Executive Officer and president of On-Spot Enterprises.

The song, ‘Sela-Sela’, has lyrics in English and Bantu and talks about the celebration and joy among all people, breaking down barriers that would hinder peace and unity.

It is a mix of many genres including pop, electro-house, dance, R&B, and African, making it very appealing to a wide range of listeners worldwide.

The continental tournament kicks off Jan. 19, with an opening match between host South Africa and Cape Verde.

«§» 14 January 2013

The owners of the five goats arrested by officials of Osun state Waste Management Agency OWMA, at Dele-Yesa area of Osogbo, Osun state on the 8th of Jan have been ordered to pay a sum of N10,000 each as fine to the coffers of the state government.

Mr. Henry Ogunbanwo, Director of Environmental Management and Sanitation in the Agency, disclosed this in Oshogbo over the weekend.

He noted that any of the owners of the goats, who failed to pay the fine within seven days would lose his or her goat.

Ogunbanwo emphasised that the agency was acting in accordance with the provisions of the article 101 of the 2002 laws of Osun State which prohibits rearing of animals in residential areas, stressing that the agency had the backing of the court.

He further explained that the Agency had been empowered by a court of competent jurisdiction to arrest any animal roaming around residential areas within the state.

It would be recalled that residents of Dele-Yesa area, Osogbo, Osun state were taken by surprise on Tuesday, when the officials of Osun State Waste Management Agency, OWMA, arrested five Goats roaming the streets.

No fewer than five goats were yesterday arrested at Dele-Yesa area in Osogbo, the Osun State capital by officials of the state Waste Management Agency (OWMA) for allegedly violating environmental laws. The state Coordinator of the agency, Mr. Henry Ogunbanwo said the goats would be charged to court by the agency and would be prosecuted in accordance with the laws guiding environmental protection in the state.

He said the state government had issued notice of warning to all residents of the state capital on the need to monitor their domestic animals to avoid public disturbance by the animals, which, he said, was against the environmental laws. Ogunbanwo disclosed that the five goats arrested were detained at the office of the agency in Osogbo from where they would be taken to court for prosecution.

He said the goats ran fowl of the laws guiding environmental protection by roaming around the residential area of Osogbo instead of being caged by their owners. He declared that the present administration in the state had zero tolerance for dirtiness and environmental hazard; hence the need for the enshrinement of the environmental laws, adding that the government would not take it lightly with violators of the laws According to him, officials of the agency would from now move to every nook and cranny of the state to arrest animals violating the state environmental laws, stressing that owners of such animals would also be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of the laws.

He advised those rearing domestic animals to keep them in a cage to avoid arrest, insisting that his agency would not allow any animal to roam about on the streets of any town or village in the state. He urged those looking for their goats in Osogbo and its environs to check at the state office of OWMA in Osogbo.

At a service held yesterday, Sunday January 13th at his church auditorium, Pastor Chris Okotie told his members (a few of them LIB readers :-)) that tattooing their body or even undergoing plastic surgery is not a sin before God.

He said a lot of people misinterpret a scripture in the bible which is supposedly against body art and enhancement. He said getting tattoos and plastic surgery is an individual decision and has nothing to do with God.

5399  Forum / Relationships & Romance / Man In Court For Having S*x With A Chicken on: 14-01-2013 04:57 AM
«§» 14 January 2013

Zambia – A CHISAMBA magistrate has convicted a 27-year-old unemployed man for having carnal knowledge of a chicken which later died.

In his ruling, magistrate Davis Tiwilili said he found the accused guilty of the offence and committed him to the High Court for sentencing.

Goliath Nyirenda of Mubalani settlement in Chisamba had sex with a chicken around 23:00 hours on November 18, last year and was charged with an unnatural sex offence.

Mr Tiwilili said the offence was a serious one which carried a maximum sentence of 15 years and fell under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Nyirenda was convicted of one count of unnatural offence contrary to Section 155b of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC), a charge he denied.

Nyirenda said during trial that on the fateful night around 22:00 hours, he returned from a drinking spree and was later woken up by the owner of the chicken Gift Michelo.

He said Mr Michelo locked him in his house and went to call his neighbours before he was handed over to the police for no reason.

But in his testimony, Mr Michelo testified that on the night of the event around 23:00 hours he was woken up by a chicken which was making noise.

He traced the noise to Nyirenda’s house.

When he entered the house, he saw Nyirenda throw the chicken through the window in panic.

Mr Michelo picked the chicken and realised that it was his and when he checked it, he noticed that it was soiled behind by Nyirenda.

And the arresting officer only identified as Mr Chushi told the court that he made up his mind to arrest and charge the accused after investigations.

«§» 14 January 2013

A Nigerian woman [names with held] has been sentenced to one and a half years in jail and deportation for using the internet to scam victims and financially defraud them, the Criminal Court of Abu Dhabi said in a statement on Saturday.

According Gulf News.com the Arab plaintiff raised a case against the defendant and a woman, claiming that they had taken almost Dh6,000 from him after he met the woman on a social networking website. The woman alleged that she was an Arab residing outside of the UAE and had $11 million (Dh40.4 million) deposited in a finance company in the capital, adding that she could not receive this money because the company was asking for Dh5,730 in return.

According to the plaintiff, the woman asked him to send her the money in exchange for 20 per cent of the deposit backing her assertions with false documents.

Gulf News.com reports that after agreeing to the deal, the plaintiff was told to give the money to a diplomat from the Nigerian embassy in the UAE, who also presented a false passport.

The woman contacted the plaintiff once again, asking for Dh26,000, which this time caused the man to become alarmed. Police caught the accused red-handed when she came to collect the money after receiving a report from the plaintiff.

The Judicial Department warned the public not to share personal information with individuals from social networking sites and urged parents to pay close attention to their children as they are more susceptible of falling for such schemes.
