It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Qing Chen, a mild-mannered Brooklyn pharmacy worker.

He may not be able to fly, but Chen got to superhero status on Friday when he rescued an 18-month-old girl who fell from a second-floor window onto an awning.

The tot had crawled through an NYC apartment window and, as bystanders looked on in shock, Chen raced upstairs to the girl’s apartment, squeezing through the same window the child had just fallen through. “I just grabbed her by the arm and took her into my chest and I just held her really tight,” Chen explained. The mother had reportedly been in the kitchen when the girl fell. “That could have been anybody’s baby, that could have been my baby,” Chen said.

At least 18 people died and around two dozen others suffered serious health issues after partygoers at two separate events consumed toxic drinks, officials said on Sunday.

Victims were rushed to hospitals in the central Pakistani city of Faisalabad when they fell unconscious after drinking the alcohol at a birthday party and another gathering. Both of the events were held in private homes.

“The death toll from the two parties has reached 18. Around two dozens others are heavily affected by the toxic liquor and battling for consciousness,” Javed Ahmed Khan, a senior police official, told AFP.

“The incidents took place in Batala colony. Five people were killed at a birthday party on Thursday and 13 others died in another get together in the same area on Friday,” he said.

The public sale of alcohol is banned in conservative Islamic Pakistan and many people prepare cheap liquor at home.

Another police official said that most of the victims had died after they returned home.

“Most of the people have died at homes, while a few expired in hospitals,” said Abid Zafar, head of the local police station.

910  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / (PHOTO) Born Without Skull: US Doctors Create Fresh Head for Nigerian Child on: 28-07-2013 07:51 PM

With much expectation, the world is waiting to see OkikiJesu Olawuyi grab a fitting place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Many across the world want to see this happen. And what that means is that a Nigerian child is well on her way to making history once she scales the mountain of surgeries standing in her path of life.

OkikiJesu Olawuyi was born without a skull but not without a will to live. Bones from her hands are being obtained to construct a skull bone to help her live. Amazingly, she is winning this battle for her life at John Hopkins University in far away United States of America. There, the best hands the world can assemble are with her every passing hour fighting a medical war to give life to a miracle child who has announced to the entire human community that she has something different to offer. First grade surgeons – irrespective of colour, race and tongue are tasking their expertise to see that this wonder of the 21st century lives to tell her story and reports say that they are doing a great job to save her.

OkikiJesu is getting moral and material support from across the world to help her live. An avalanche of support is coming her way. Her parents are carrying the burden of pain and anguish with stoic patience. They are fighting to remedy a medical case they cannot tell how it all started. The child needs a lot more financial assistance to pull through, her father, Mr. Caleb Olawuyi, says. He disclosed that she needed an additional $500,000 to undergo the final operation that would enable her live a normal life. Experts say that is possible and they can achieve that. While appealing for generous support from government, corporate organizations and private individuals to help the baby live, Mr. Olawuyi, has equally urged government to set up funds to assist babies afflicted with critical ailments. Speaking straight from the heart, he noted that one needed to be close to a child in pains to know how it feels.

Since news of the child’s medical condition was disclosed, the world has been aghast. She was born on May 11, 2010 with a rare birth deformity which means over 50 per cent of her skull doesn't exist. The world has not seen anything of this stuff. In recorded history, Sunday Sun gathered that this medical condition has never been reported anywhere. The child’s condition is one that appears to have turned medicine on its head, having thrown up tremendous professional challenge to the human race. Now, the very best the world has known are fighting a crunchy battle to overcome this, leaving many – particularly those with hearts of stone- wondering if there is nothing they can offer to help.

Now from the home sector, help is coming for three-year-old Okiki and her parents. Since the condition of the baby became public knowledge, a non profit organization had stepped in to assist. Global Initiative for Peace, Love and Care (GIPLC) has been doing all it can to give life to the child whose medical condition is not traceable to her parents. With the assistance of the organization’s Coordinator and Project Manager, Mr. Nuhu Kwajafa, the child and her parents were on May 4, 2013, flown to the United States. There, she is currently undergoing skull reconstruction surgery at the John Hopkins University Medical Centre.

Now, the child’s and her father’s cry for help comes ringing through the airways asking Nigerians to help her live. Here is a child the world is interested in. The non-profit organization is doing its best at that level to help her survive. Sunday Sun gathered that while the world was a short while away from screaming uhuru at the wonderful breakthrough, an unforeseen complication arose after over 14 hours of surgery. This followed inconsistencies in her medical history. Besides, her case marked a maiden attempt in paediatric neurosurgery. This, therefore, led to a further accumulation of medical bills totaling over US$500,000. This bill is spiraling every passing day OkikiJesu and her parents spend at the Johns Hopkins facility.

Specialists in the USA have identified the rare birth deformity which OkikiJesu is suffering, as Congenital Cranial Deficiency. Before now, she had been to several hospitals but not cured, but luck flashed on her pathway when GIPLC, which is based in Abuja took up her case. Sunday Sun learnt that since then, the organization has recorded significant success in efforts to get medical care for her. Within just a week, it raised about $234,000, an equivalent of N37 million through kind gestures from individuals and groups for her treatment at John Hopkins Hospital.

Kwajafa , just back from the United States, told Sunday Sun that “prior to the complications which arose, what made a determination of the full cost of Okiki’s surgery difficult is that in modern times, it is an extremely rare (perhaps singular) medical condition with no precedence to draw estimates from.
“This latter fact also means that it is equally difficult to tell what other medical complications may arise. An example are fluids that were retained in her cranial cavity which have posed an unforeseen challenge and may have led to a fatal infection.”

Kwajafa’s worry is that, “OkikiJesu may not be released from hospital until all outstanding bills have been paid. We and her parents are desirous of her condition being fully remedied before she leaves the hospital.” Against this backdrop, he said “We would like to appeal to the global public to support our cause in ensuring that OkikiJesu Olawuyi lives.”

Medical analysts believe she will be a living testimony if she recovers. According to GIPLC, her case remains the only one of its kind in the world.

When OkikiJesu’s father, Mr. Olawuyi spoke to Sunday Sun on telephone from John Hopkins Hospital, he expressed optimism that the girl was doing well and had remained in stable condition. He said “We thank God that she is responding positively to every operation performed on her. The doctors attending to her are also pleased with her present condition. They said she is a miracle child, because she is so far the only child in the world with this kind of health condition.

“They told us that there is no case of her type in medical history at their disposal the world over. There are three renowned doctors attending to OkikiJesu and the experience is so great.

“They keep assuring us that everything will be fine soon. We are also hoping positively and asking God to deliver our child.”
In a voice laden with emotion, he appealed to Nigerians to assist the child to live through their generous donations, pointing out that with money available, the baby was sure to survive.

“But our greatest challenge here is the cost of her treatment in the hospital. It’s indeed a very tough experience for us as parents.
The medical bill keeps increasing daily and has since been piling up. The treatment has over-shot the initial bill that was given to us before we came, because her condition exceeded their estimation.

The major issue is the hospital bill and not really our up-keep, that is, myself, my wife and our 15-month old baby, (Okiki’s younger sister). She is currently at the intensive care unit (ICU). This costs between $6,000 and $10,000 daily. Sometimes, two nurses are stationed to take care of her daily and it costs a lot of money.

“The good thing is that they are not taking any chance. They are all over her all the time. They are monitoring her regularly especially as she is an international patient. The bill is growing higher,” he lamented.

Okiki’s father further stated that for “every parent of a child with this critical health challenge, one only manages to sleep and to wake up hoping that the next day would be different. We have gone through this trauma all this while. Though, we have faith in God but every passing day, we are afraid for her life. Here in the hospital, as critical as her condition is , we are living and sharing her pains more so that the bills pile up every moment.

“We appeal to Nigerians not to give up on Okiki. With their support, God will not disappoint us because she keeps improving daily. All the operations have been very critical. They took bones from her hand and leg to construct her skull. And she is doing fine.

“We appreciate efforts by all Nigerians including individuals, groups and corporate organizations. Everybody has been very supportive. We thank the Nigerian government, the National Assembly, and particularly the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal and other kind-hearted people and members of our family for their support.

“On behalf of our daughter Okiki, and other children and parents in this condition, we urge government to institute a Special Trust Fund to take care of such rare and critical cases in the country. This fund should be adequately funded to cater for such critical needs.

“For us, Okiki’s parents, we are in this condition but hope that one day God will deliver us.

“In this situation, we repeat our appeal for quick intervention from the government and other Nigerians. Our wish here is that others should be spared this experience.
We plead further with government to establish a fund to cater for such children in this condition.”

•Your donations go directly to Okiki’s account with John Hopkins Medical International.

Maybe Toni can ask Tamar to borrow some money to buy her songs back since she has all the scrilla now.

Toni Braxton may still have a song in her heart after filing for bankruptcy, but she just lost more than 2 dozen tunes that made her famous  because some dude bought them right out from under her.

Braxton struck a deal in her bankruptcy case, in which she settled with her various debtors. Part of the deal Toni could buy back 27 songs from her music catalogue for $20K  with one BIG string attached she could be outbid.

Enter a guy named Ross M. Klein, who doubled Toni’s price and nabbed the tunes.

Among the 27 are a few hits, including “You’re Making Me High,” “How Many Ways,” and “Always.”
“Un-Break My Heart” is not among the 27, and we don’t know its fate … although it looks like it’s still hers.

913  Forum / Politics / Racism: Bananas Thrown At Black Italian Minister During Speech on: 27-07-2013 08:26 PM

Since she was elected as Italy’s first black minister in April, Cecile Kyenge has been the victim of racist attacks.

In the latest incident on Friday, a spectator threw bananas at her while she was giving a speech at a party rally.

Integration minister Cecile Kyenge, who was born in Democratic Republic of Congo, has angered far-right groups with her campaign to make it easier for immigrants to gain Italian citizenship.

Shortly before the incident on Friday, members of the right-wing Forza Nuova group left mannequins covered in fake blood at the site of the rally in Cervia, central Italy, in protest against Kyenge's proposal to make anyone born on Italian soil a citizen.

"Immigration kills," was written on leaflets accompanying the dummies - a slogan Forza Nuova has previously used when referring to murders committed by immigrants in Italy.

Although the bananas missed the stage where Kyenge was speaking, she responded to the gesture on Twitter, calling it "sad" and a waste of food, considering the economic crisis.

"The courage and optimism to change things has to come above all from the bottom up to reach the institutions," she added.

Kyenge has faced regular insults since becoming minister, often from other politicians. Earlier this month a senior parliamentarian in the anti-immigration Northern League party likened her to an orangutan and only apologized after a storm of criticism.
914  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / More than 1000 Inmates Escape from Libyan Jail on: 27-07-2013 08:05 PM

More than 1,000 inmates have escaped from a jail in the troubled Libyan city of Benghazi.

A security official from the jail told the AP news agency that most of the escapees were facing serious charges.

Benghazi is one of the most unstable parts of post-revolution Libya. Last year the US ambassador and three other Americans were killed there.

It is not clear whether the jailbreak was part of ongoing political unrest in the city.

Earlier protesters attacked offices linked to the Muslim Brotherhood following the assassination of the prominent political activist Abdelsalam al-Mismari.

They stormed offices of the Justice and Construction Party, the Brotherhood's political wing.

A retired air-force colonel and a senior police officer were also shot dead on Friday in Benghazi, in the latest in a series of targeted killings of security personnel.

Libya's government is struggling to control armed groups nearly two years after Col Muammar Gaddafi was toppled.

Scott Thorson, 54 — whose life with the pianist was turned into film Behind The Candelabra — said he began bedding Jacko in 1982 after he and Liberace split.

He said: “I was introduced to Michael Jackson through Liberace back in 1977 and we had a fantastic relationship.

“When we broke up in 1982, Michael swept me off my feet and said, ‘Hey, I’m breaking away from the Jackson 5. I’m going solo’. This is when the Thriller tour started. Michael swept me off my feet.”

Asked on Aussie radio if they were lovers, Scott replied: “Yes, for a short term.

“It was short term because Michael became very big at the time and his management team thought it best that we didn’t go any further with our relationship.”
He claimed they were wary of his court battle for a £73million payoff from Liberace — who died in 1987 aged 67. The case was eventually settled for just £60,000.

Scott — currently on US probation for identity theft — said he and Jacko stayed pals until the star, 50, died in 2009 from a drugs overdose.

He added: “It was very sad. But it just goes to show what these plastic surgeons can do to you — or any doctor for that matter.

“Michael started his drug addiction because of the plastic surgeons.”

917  Forum / Politics / Lagos State Moves Against Indiscriminate Hanging of Washed Clothes on: 27-07-2013 07:22 PM

The Lagos State Government on Saturday said it would seal up any building where residents displayed their clothes outside indiscriminately.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Mr Tunji Bello, gave the warning while speaking with newsmen shortly after monitoring the monthly sanitation exercise in Egbe-Idimu area of the state.

He said  spreading of  washed clothes on fences and frontage of   buildings was becoming the norm in some parts of the state.

According to him, the practice constitutes a nuisance to the environment.

The commissioner also warned residents,  who wash  and spread their clothes on bridge railings on  major roads to desist from such act, saying tough actions would be taken against erring persons.

“We are telling residents who wash and spread clothes on the streets, major highways and other places outside their homes to desist from the practice as it constitutes  a great environmental nuisance.

“This is not good for our people and our state. We have directed the officials of the Lagos State Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) to pack those clothes as refuse wherever they see them.

“We will not hesitate to seal up buildings or houses outside of which compounds residents hang their clothes indiscriminately,“ Bello said.

He also urged the residents to create spaces  within the confines of their homes to spread their clothes rather than doing so in places “not friendly to the environment.’’

The commissioner said that major roads and bridges were not the right places for the spreading of clothes, adding that those indulging in such practice were risking their lives.

Bello had earlier decried the erection of structures on  flood plains and pipelines by residents of Egbe-Idimu.

He said that the situation was a major source of flooding and other disasters.

The commissioner urged the residents to remove such offending structures to ensure  their safety.

He also said the state government would demolish the Orisumbare Cattle Market in the area and relocate the traders because it was erected  on a drainage channel

The commissioner urged those affected to show understanding on the government’s plan, saying that relocation of the market was to pave way for the planned drainage development project in the area.

The market leader, Mr Musibau Jolaosho, however, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the state government`s planned relocation of the market came as surprise to the traders.

He said that the market, which had the state government`s approval, had been in existence for over 20 years, serving other 36 markets in Alimosho Local Government area with beef.

“This place is actually one of the six approved abattoirs in the state. We are worried about the government`s plan, especially as we are about improving things in the market.

“But, if the state government still wants to carry out its plan, we can`t fight the government.

“But, we appeal that the government should immediately provide another place for us so that we can go on with our lives,’’ he said. (NAN)
918  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Former World’s 8th Richest Man Loses $34.5 Billion (₦5.5 Trillion) on: 27-07-2013 02:49 PM

Brazil businessman Eike Batista has seen better days.

Last March the Brazilian commodities tycoon ranked as the world’s eighth richest person with a net worth of $34.5 billion. His net worth today: $200 million, according to Bloomberg Billionaires.

Batista, who has been called the Donald Trump of Brazil, may have suffered one of the “worst wealth losses in history,” says Bloomberg Billionaires Index editor Matt Miller. “He was the face of Brazilian capitalism. He’s mired in debt. This is a tragic fall for him.

Most of Batista’s problems stem from the erosion of nearly 90% of the value in his flagship company, OGX Petroleo & Gas Participacoes SA (OGXP3). Shares in the business have plummeted in the last year as the company missed targets for production output and reserves.

Yesterday, Mubadala Development Co., a sovereign-wealth fund out of Abu Dhabi, converted an investment in Batista’s companies into debt, further eroding the value of his overall assets. EBX Group Co., Batista’s commodities empire, now owes $1.5 billion to Mubadala. And that put Batista over the edge, reducing his personal wealth to millions, not billions anymore. Miller says he “tended to oversell the amount of resources it had,” and that Batista would have to “constantly borrow against one company to pay for the needs of others.

Unlike billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, Batista was ostentatious about his wealth, even declaring that he would overtake Mexico’s Carlos Slim for the world’s richest person title by 2015. He told Bloomberg: “Just give me time, let me work please.

What was behind his ambition?

I suffered very heavy asthma, so my mother threw me in the cold swimming pool,” Batista said. “So I cured my asthma through discipline, and I saw that you could achieve things by performing, and it’s part of my DNA… I’m very competitive.

Well, Batista now has one year and five months to earn back $66.8 billion.

920  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / South African chef 'too fat' to live in New Zealand on: 27-07-2013 02:14 PM

Authorities in New Zealand have told a South African chef he is too fat to be allowed to live in the country.

Immigration officials said Albert Buitenhuis, who weighs 130kg (286 pounds), did not have "an acceptable standard of health".

He now faces expulsion despite shedding 30kg since he moved to the city of Christchurch six years ago

New Zealand has one of the highest obesity rates in the developed world, with nearly 30% of people overweight.

Mr Buitenhuis and his wife, Marthie, moved from South Africa to Christchurch in 2007. At the time, the chef weighed 160kg.

Until now, their annual work visas had been renewed with "very little problem", his wife said.

"We applied year after year and there were no issues," she said.

"They never mentioned Albert's weight or his health once and he was a lot heavier then."

But in early May, the couple was told their work visas had been declined because of Mr Buitenhuis's weight.

"The irony is that at the moment he weighs less than when we first arrived in New Zealand and also less than in his first medical, which was accepted by [immigration authorities]," his wife said.

The couple has appealed to New Zealand's immigration minister, citing the chef's recent weight loss.

An immigration spokesman said Mr Buitenhuis's application had been rejected because his obesity put him at "significant risk" of complications including diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

"It is important that all migrants have an acceptable standard of health to minimise costs and demands on New Zealand's health services," he said.
