Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Austen Oniwon disclosed yesterday that 80 per cent of the first class and second class upper graduates scored less than 20 per cent in the just concluded recruitment examination conducted by the company.

Austen Oniwon who stated this at the opening ceremony of the 9th NNPC National Quiz Competition in Abuja confessed that the result of the recruitment exercise was far below expectations as most graduates with the best grades performed woefully.

Represented by the Group General Manager, Public Affairs Division of the NNPC, Dr Levi Ajuonuma, the NNPC Boss added that the performance of these graduates has heightened the management’s apprehension about the lack of functionality of the country’s educational sector and given more reasons to shift focus from mere paper qualifications.

The Group Managing Director said relying on people to secure employment in the organisation was now a thing of the past stressing that the NNPC now placed emphasis on what individuals have to offer(Intelligence).

The NNPC Boss also made reference to the recently recorded mass failure in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), he made the call for an urgent review in the educational sector.
