1  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigerian National, Muoka Ebuka Beaten To Death By South African Police, Sparks Outrage on: 19-05-2024 09:23 PM

Prince Muoka Ebuka, a 43-year-old Nigerian from Obosi, Anambra State, was allegedly beaten to death by police officers in South Africa on Friday, May 17, 2024. The incident occurred in Danielskuil, Northern Cape, during a raid on his residence under the suspicion of drug dealing.

The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) condemned the killing in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Habib Miller, on Saturday, May 18. "This incident highlights a disturbing trend of police abuse targeting Nigerians in the Northern Cape," the statement read.

The raid, based on allegations of drug involvement, led to a violent confrontation. Ebuka’s wife, Joyce, reported that officers stormed their home, forcing her to evacuate with their young child to avoid the violence. Ebuka was then allegedly assaulted and coerced to produce drugs, which were not found. He was subsequently taken to a waste dump where officers accused him of hiding illegal substances.

Eyewitnesses reported severe misconduct, noting that officers requested pepper spray after leaving Ebuka’s residence. Despite using drug detection methods, no drugs were discovered. The intense interrogation allegedly led to Ebuka's death, raising concerns about the integrity of the investigation due to improper preservation of the crime scene.

Miller noted further distress when police refused to issue a statement or allow the family to open a case docket. Joyce Ebuka faced intimidation when attempting to report her husband's death.

NUSA has demanded a thorough, impartial investigation into Prince Ebuka’s killing and the broader issue of police abuse in the Northern Cape. This incident follows similar cases in Kimberley and the killing of another Nigerian, Chika Anuino, by police in Springs, Johannesburg, on April 25.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its intention to investigate the incident. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, spokesperson for the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, condemned the death, calling it "one death too many." He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible.

"Condemnable and sad. One death too many. We are calling for an investigation, and anyone found culpable should face the music,” Balogun told The Punch.

Air passengers traveling through Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja can now enjoy free Wi-Fi services, according to information obtained by Vanguard.

Mr. Tunde Moshood, Special Assistant to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, confirmed the new development on Sunday. He also indicated that plans are underway to extend free Wi-Fi services to other airports across the country, aligning with Minister Festus Keyamo's third agenda to enhance airport infrastructure.

In an interview with Vanguard, Moshood stated, “Both local and international flyers can now enjoy free Wi-Fi in Lagos and Abuja at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Murtala Muhammed International Airport (Terminal 1 & Terminal 2). Stay connected, surf the web, and make your journey smoother. Look for the NCC Free Airport Wi-Fi and get connected. Your life does not have to pause while at the airport. Use the Wi-Fi to enjoy all your latest music and download your favorite Netflix programs.”

Moshood highlighted that other airports are in line to receive the same service, in accordance with the Minister’s agenda to improve infrastructure across all airports and the aviation industry as a whole.

Previously, Minister Keyamo attributed the absence of airport Wi-Fi to bureaucratic challenges between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA). He resolved these issues by reallocating Wi-Fi provision responsibilities to NAMA.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Communication, Keyamo is working to ensure imminent access to complimentary Wi-Fi at airports. Discussions are also underway with international firms to provide in-flight Wi-Fi, aiming to meet global aviation standards and enhance passenger connectivity during flights.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has declared Kazeem Omogoriola Owoalade and Rashidat Ayinke Owoalade wanted for allegedly orchestrating a cocaine trafficking operation from India. This declaration follows the arrest of four syndicate members in Lagos and the seizure of a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and two properties linked to the couple, now sealed for forfeiture to the Federal Government.

The announcement was made in a statement by the NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, and posted on the agency’s website on Sunday.

The statement detailed, “Kazeem Omogoriola Owoalade, alias Abdul Qassim Adisa Balogun, and Rashidat Ayinke Owoalade, alias Bolarinwa Rashidat Ayinke, have been declared wanted for operating a cocaine cartel from India. This follows the arrest of four syndicate members in Lagos, the recovery of a Sports Utility Vehicle, and the sealing of two houses traced to them for forfeiture to the Federal Government.”

Two members of the cartel, Imran Taofeek Olalekan and Ishola Isiaka Olalekan, were apprehended on April 3, 2024, as they attempted to export 3.40 kg of cocaine via a Qatar Airlines flight from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos. Imran, who was transporting the drugs, was recruited by Ishola on behalf of Kazeem Owoalade, identified as the cartel leader residing in India under the alias Abdul Qassim Adisa Balogun.

Intensive surveillance and follow-up operations led to a breakthrough after five weeks, culminating in the arrest of another cartel member, Hamed Abimbola Saheed, on May 14 at Abule Egba, Lagos. Saheed, who facilitated Imran's lodging and transport to the airport, was found with 900 grams of phenacetine, a cocaine cutting agent. He admitted that the substance was part of the consignment Imran was transporting when arrested.

Saheed's arrest prompted a raid on the Owoalade couple's residence at 20, Eyiaro Street, Ogudu Orioke, Lagos. During the raid, authorities arrested another suspect, confiscated a Toyota RAV4 SUV registered to Rashidat, and recovered 400 grams of cocaine, along with suitcases prepared for drug concealment, digital scales, and other trafficking equipment.

The NDLEA continues its efforts to dismantle the Owoalade's drug network and urges anyone with information on the couple's whereabouts to come forward.

17  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso Ignore ECOWAS Peace Offer, Form New Confederation on: 19-05-2024 07:26 PM

In a significant geopolitical shift, ECOWAS has lifted sanctions on Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, aiming to reconcile the three nations with the regional bloc after their announced withdrawal. This development comes as the trio finalizes plans to form a confederation, marking a notable transformation within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region.

The new alliance, named the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), signals a departure from their colonial ties with France and a pivot towards closer relations with Russia. The announcement was made following a meeting of the foreign ministers of the three nations in Niamey, the capital of Niger, on Friday, May 17, 2024.

Niger's Foreign Minister, Bakary Sangare, confirmed the completion of a draft text outlining the institutional and operational framework of the AES. “The objective was to finalize the draft text relating to the institutionalization and operationalization of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States,” Sangare stated.

According to Sangare, the heads of state from the three countries will formally adopt the text at an upcoming summit, the date of which remains unspecified. Mali’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, declared, “We can consider very clearly, today, that the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States has been born.”

The creation of the AES underscores the determination of these Sahel nations, currently under military rule, to sever ties with ECOWAS. The regional bloc had been striving to reintegrate the trio after their decision to exit on January 28, 2024, citing that ECOWAS had strayed from the ideals of its founding fathers and pan-Africanism.

This decision followed months of sanctions imposed by ECOWAS on Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso after the overthrow of their democratically elected governments. However, in February 2024, ECOWAS lifted the sanctions following the intervention of Nigeria's former military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.

The formation of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States represents a new chapter for these nations, as they chart a course towards a different regional alignment and international partnerships.

In a joint effort by human rights activists and the Abia State Police Command, an 11-year-old girl has been rescued from her allegedly abusive employer in Aba. The operation was led by the Abia State Director of Behind Bars Initiative (BBI), Ochiegbu Marvelous, who revealed that the girl was working as a maid for the suspect, with whom she has no familial relationship.

Ochiegbu Marvelous disclosed the details on Saturday, May 18, 2024, highlighting the jubilation that accompanied the rescue. Surprisingly, the young girl, covered in bruises, insisted her injuries were accidental, claiming she had hit her head on a wall and that her employer had been good to her.

"Yesterday, we succeeded in rescuing the 11-year-old girl reported to be abused in Aba by her employer. But to my greatest surprise, the victim has been crying since yesterday, saying it was an accident," Ochiegbu Marvelous wrote. "She dashed her head on the wall and insists that her employer has been kind to her. Even when we separated them, she still wanted to stay with him."

The employer, maintaining it was an accident, has raised doubts among the rescuers. Marvelous expressed skepticism about the nature of the injuries, pointing out the numerous bruises on the girl's body. He suggested that the girl's denial might be influenced by fear or manipulation.

The rescue operation brought significant relief to the local community, who celebrated the intervention. "You need to see the joy and jubilation in the street as the Abia State BBI team and officers of the Abia State Police Command Abayi Division stormed the location," Marvelous noted. "Everyone was blessing us for rescuing the child."

The girl, originally from Amichi in Nnewi, Anambra State, is set to be reunited with her parents. Marvelous called for the establishment of a rehabilitation center for victims in Abia State to aid in such rescue missions and provide proper care for those affected.

Marvelous extended his gratitude to his team and the police officers involved, especially commending the Division Police Officer (DPO) of Abayi Division and the Officer-in-Charge of Surveillance, Supol Uche, for their dedication and resourcefulness during the rescue.
