61  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Must Read: Fashola Signs Law Against Abandonment of Pregnant Women on: 9-08-2011 03:16 PM
Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, signed a bill into law, which allows for the prosecution and jailing of any man who impregnates and deserts any woman.

The bill presented to the governor by the state’s Commissioner of Justice and Attorney General, Mr. Ade Ipaye, at Government House, Ikeja, was among three other bills presented for the governor’s assent.

Other bills include amendments to provisions of the Emergency Management Agency, EMA, Law and the Administration of Criminal Justice.

Fashola, while assenting to the bills, said the various amendments to the laws were needed to tackle the problem of crime and delay in administration of justice in the state.

He said the enactment of the laws represented the commitment of the state government to building strong institutions, that could tackle crime and corruption, which had crippled the country.

He added that the country needed strong legislation to fight corruption and moral laxity.

Fashola explained that the Criminal Code Law, used in the state before now was enacted in 1914 by the colonial masters, saying that such laws and their provisions had since become obsolete and could not address challenges posed by present realities.

A Saudi man died after he was slapped by another Saudi during a heated argument in the Gulf Kingdom, press reports said on Monday.

The man, in his 50s, collapsed after the slap and was rushed to hospital, where he died two days later, they said.

Police in the central town of Buraidah said they arrested the other man, in his 60s, for investigation pending the release of a medical report to determine the exact cause of death.

In some of Karachi’s biggest areas, the bodies of newborn babies are being dumped at an alarming rate.
It’s a story that would make the must ardent horror fan shudder, over the last year alone over 1200 newborn baby girls have been killed and dumped on rubbish dumps on the streets of Karachi, Pakistan.
News network CNN sent reporter Reza Sayah into Karachi to look at the situation that by aid workers own words is getting out of hand.
Anwar Kazmi of Edhi Foundation told Sayah “ Sometimes they are hanged, sometimes they are killed by knife, and sometimes we find bodies that have been burned”.

9 out of 10 bodies found are baby girls, disposed of by families because they are illegitimate, conceived out of wedlock. In a country where women are not allowed to work, girls are deemed as a drain on the countries resources. Many of the babies have been dismembered, burned, or even mutilated by animals before being discovered in large dump areas often in the middle of busy shopping areas.
Sayah went to a makeshift morgue set up by Edhi Foundation, where he found five corpses of babies found in the past two days alone.
Kazmi of the non profit making organisation placed a crib outside the headquarters of the foundation, in the hope that people will leave babies in the crib, rather than killing them, letting them live allows them to be found new families.

It is believed that poor education is to blame, with as many as 55 million Pakistani’s being illiterate, due to lack of education funding.
Edhi Foundation believe that with all the controversy, and internal wranglings that the plight of Karachi’s newborns is going unheard.

But they later called authorities.

A neighbor described what he saw for Bakersfield TV station KERO 23, "There was still some hair, there was still flesh on it, bones sticking out of the neck."

The man, identified as Joseph, told the station he was helping the daughters at the house.

The doctor, 89-year old Donald G. Nelson, is a former ophthalmologist who is now in a nursing home in Los Angeles.

State documents show Nelson's medical license was revoked in June 2006 for "writing the wrong diagnosis on a prescription."

He was ordered to pay a fine of $1,500, but the documents show that he failed to pay the fine.

The Sheriff's Office is treating the case as a suspicious death.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP)– An abandoned bush baby and a yellow baboon have formed an unlikely companionship at an animal orphanage in Nairobi.

The six-month-old female yellow baboon abandoned by its family in Maralal in Northen Kenya, is taking care of the three-month-old bush baby, that was also abandoned by its family in central Kenya.
Charles Musyoki, a senior scientist for species and conservation at the Kenya Wildlife Service, says it is likely that the animals formed the bond in order to cope in the new environment at the animal orphanage.
He says the union between the two species is a rare occurrence that was last recorded in Kenya in 2002, when a lioness adopted a young oryx — a large antelope that lions normally hunt_ and nurtured it.
76  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Sex workers flee Obalende over Boko Haram on: 26-07-2011 11:51 PM
The mention of Obalende would remind people of a noisy seedy part of Lagos Island on the route to the former Federal Secretariat and seat of past military administrations in Dodan Barracks. But the Obalende in Kaduna city is a shade more notorious as a place that reeks of flesh, night time crawlers and rancorous behaviours.

In the alternative, the place is known as Crocodile city. Obalende is situated in the heart of Kaduna metropolis, even though it is officially called Maiduguri, Forcados roads, by Constitution way, and not far from the Ahmadu Bello National Stadium. It is the largest gathering place for commercial sex workers who operate on 24 hour basis either on street corners or in the numerous low end hotels with noisy music blaring endlessly onto the streets. For years, Obalende has remained a major sexpot in Kaduna with more than 11 brothels and over 20 other nondescript hotels concentrated in a densely populated neighbourhood.

This makes it easy for clients to escape from watchful eyes of spouses and friends to live momentarily in a world with women of easy virtues, given that the area never sleeps. Interestingly, many commercial sex workers come from outside this “Sin City” and are known to operate on short time basis before heading for respective homes at dawn. Usually, their mode of dressing is not only weird and banal, they are meant to expose maximum flesh that leaves nothing to the imagination.

More fascinating is the fact that their style of business is very aggressive as more creative ones employ every lewd language and tactics to snare their quarry. A sampler: “Oga see my Bosom , it is still standing and you can enjoy me. My customer, please do not forget me today. I promise to satisfy you to the fullest for a small amount.”

Though charges vary, the amount one pays is dependent on the perception of the sex worker on whether a prospective client is affluent or not. It also comes with demands of a client and duration of service to be rendered. On average, prices range from N1, 500.00 to N2000.00 for short time which is normally an hour, but still negotiable.

Sadly, all these activities are slowly grinding to a halt as the once booming Obalende has become a ghost town following a recent deadly attack by the Boko Haram sect who had earlier warned people to stay away from beer drinking parlours and night clubs for safety of their lives, failing which they would have themselves to blame.

Visit by Community Mirror to the area, reveals presence of heavily built men known as bouncers using metal detectors to screen clients and customers coming or going out of the few hotels and brothels that dare to remain open. As if to make good their threat, members of the sect planted an explosive device at the “Ngozi Hotel”, one of the many in the area. According to an account, the bomb was hidden in a refuse bin near the hotel, and it went off before it was detected causing mayhem and stampede.

Community Mirror gathered that the explosion killed one of the sex workers and injured seven others. A sex worker who also was a victim, told Community Mirror that she went to buy some packets of condom in a pharmacy when she heard a loud boom close to the hotel fence and a shrapnel hit her leg.

“I went to buy condoms for my business, when I heard a loud sound. On entering my room, I saw blood on my leg and my chest. I was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, but I am still feeling big pain on my leg,”she said. Investigations revealed that the explosion has caused serious confusion in streets like Oshogbo and Bonny in the neighbourhood as residents now sleep with one eye open for fear of further attacks, considering the large number of beer parlours and brothels in the area even as many sex workers are now deserting Obalende for more subdued and less popular areas and hotels.

A one-year-old boy in India has broken a world record after being born with 34 fingers and toes.
Akshat Saxena had seven fingers on each hand and ten toes on each foot, according to a spokesman for Guinness World Records.
The child, from Uttar Pradesh in northern India, has since had a series of surgeries to amputate the excess digits. Akshat was born last year without thumbs so doctors are working to reconstruct these out of the fingers they have removed.

His mother Amrita Saxena said: 'I was so happy to see my baby as it was our first child.
'But later, when I saw his fingers, I was shocked and surprised.'
The condition is known as polydactyly, a genetic disorder which can be inherited and gives rise to excess digits.
Most commonly, the extra digits appear on the little finger side of the hand.
Mrs Saxena said it was a family friend who convinced them Akshat was extremely special.
She said: 'He read on the internet about the baby born in China with 31 fingers.

'Then he said that my boy has broken the record of having 34 fingers. At first, I was not convinced at all. It was hard to believe that my son has broken the record.
'But later, he along with my husband and my younger sister registered the data in the Internet.'
The record was previously held by a six-year-old boy in China who had 15 fingers and 16 toes.
The child, who his family refused to name, also had surgery to remove his extra digits. He now has ten fingers and ten toes following a six-and-a-half hour operation at a hospital in Shenyang, Liaoning last March.

78  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Maiduguri: Soldiers Kill 23 Civilians At Random After Bomb Blast on: 26-07-2011 06:36 PM
Nigeria security forces in random killing following bomb blast

The Nigerian authorities must immediately put a stop to unlawful killings by security forces, Amnesty International said today after at least 23 people were killed by police following a bomb blast on Saturday in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri.

The bomb, allegedly set off by the Islamist group Boko Haram, went off in the Budum market in central Maiduguri and injured three soldiers. According to reports received by Amnesty International, the Nigerian Joint Military Task Force (JTF) responded by shooting and killing a number of people, apparently at random, before burning down the market.

“President Goodluck Jonathan must get a grip on the Nigerian armed forces and immediately prevent them from carrying out further human rights violations and unlawful killings,” said Tawanda Hondora, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Africa.

“The government must now investigate these heinous crimes and put on trial those found to be responsible for the killings. Allowing troops to go on the rampage will not bring to justice those who carry out these terrible bomb attacks on civilians,” he said.

“While staying within the law, the government must step up efforts to bring to justice members of Boko Haram who wreck untold suffering on people in the middle belt.”

One wing of Boko Haram has reportedly disowned the bomb blast, saying it may have been carried out by a splinter group.

The JTF was set up by the federal government in June 2011 to restore order in Borno state. In recent months, Amnesty International has received numerous reports that security forces in Borno state have resorted to unlawful killings, dragnet arrests, arbitrary and unlawful detentions, extortion, and intimidation.

One human rights defender told Amnesty International “Soldiers went on the rampage. They shot several people and burned all their shops and properties and burned their cars.”

79  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Zenith Sacks More Than 300 System Administrators on: 26-07-2011 06:28 PM
In an unprecedented move, management of Zenith Bank Nigeria today 25th of July 2011,  sent no less than 350 system administrators into the labor market without prior warning. The system administrators who handle the IT requirements of all zenith branches were all sacked today. In some months past, it was discovered that most of their job functions were being reassigned to Customer service officers and Head of operations, leaving the System admins with little or nothing to do. So it didn't really come as a shock to discerning minds when they were handed their sack letters today. The most pitiful part of it is that these are people who aren't full staff but were hired by an outsourcing firm called PEOPLESPLUS. Most of these sys admins have spent nothing less than 5 years in service of the bank but were today shown the way out with little more than a months salary in lieu of notice. The only IT staff in Zenith bank today are those who are in the Head office in Victoria Island. Our sources tell us that this is just the first stage in the massive retrenchment going on in zenith bank as the people who are the next target are the bulk cash counters who will soon be shown the way out with the sanusi's cashless society as an excuse.

I was once a victim of this some years ago when i was working with an NGO. These guys feels there's no use for System Administrators since most of their employed staff can type on the computer, they see it as a waste of most, but what they fail to realise is that there's more to what meets the eye. I had to move on with life by establishing my own IT Firm. Go to computer village, everybody there claims 2 be computer literate, where they know nada.

80  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 5 Shot Dead In Bayelsa on: 26-07-2011 06:24 PM
It was a bloody weekend in Bayelsa State as five people were shot and killed in various locations across the state.
It started with the killing of two ex-militant leaders in a restaurant while they were eating in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.

According to sources, one of the ex-militant leaders known as ‘Commander Akina’ was in company with a fellow ex-militant whose identity was not immediately known when somebody just entered into the restaurant and opened fire killing the two of them on the spot.
Their death was said to be unconnected to the disagreement on the monthly amnesty allowances paid through the various leaders by the Federal Government amnesty committee.
The shooting which did not last more than two minutes forced people to scamper for safety with some residents immediately calling the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) and alerting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO).
Operation Famou Tangbei was immediately contacted and the corpses were handed over to it before it was deposited at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) morgue.

At Edepie, two boys escaped death as they were attacked in their house by a gang who shot them and thought they were dead before leaving with some amnesty money, which they accused them of collecting illegally.
Two boys were also killed at the Opolo Park while body of another victim was found by the residents.
Eyewitness account at the Opolo Park said people were caught unawares as the shooting of the two boys was too sudden. The assailants were said to have approached their targets and shot them at close range causing pandemonium with drivers abandoning their vehicles and shops around the area closing hurriedly.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Eguaveon Emoakpe, in an interview confirmed three deaths and said the police were on top of the situation.

According to him, no arrests had been made but said investigations had commenced fully into the incidents.
Meanwhile, the fighters of the Niger Delta Liberation Forces (NDLF) had again warned that leaving weapons and ammunition used by the group in its battle with men of the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) in the hands of local fighters could spell doom for the security of the region.
The NDLF after weeks of battle with the JTF had on May 15 announced its surrender, noting that since the JTF did not destroy its armoury, government should take urgent steps to mop them up by integrating the NDLF fighters in the amnesty programme.

In a statement by its spokesman, Mark Anthony, which re-confirmed the death of its leader, John Togo, NDLF noted that Togo was in talks with the coordinator of the amnesty programme, Mr. Kingsley Kuku on the possibility that members of the NDLF gets presidential pardon.
Investigations revealed that NDLF fighters had contacted an Ijaw leader and a well-respected ex-militant leader to reach out to the presidency on their behalf and explore the possibility of a presidential pardon.
Sources said the two emissaries had tried to no avail to convince the presidency on the need to grant the NDLF fighters pardon and integrate them into the amnesty programme.
The Federal Government shut the door on further pardon when it declared that there were no more phases of the amnesty after the second batch was admitted.

NDLF in the statement, however, urged the Federal Government to have re-think on its plans as leaving arms in the hands of local fighters who had expressed the willingness to embrace amnesty was ignored.
It pointed out that; “this negligence on the part of Federal Government may lead to a future insecurity in Niger Delta.”
