MAIDUGURI, Nigeria Aug 19 (Reuters) - Nigerian police said on Friday they had arrested a shop owner who sold chemicals to people suspected of involvement in Monday's failed car bomb attack on the police headquarters in the northeastern city of Maiduguri.
A man was shot dead by police after he rammed a car filled with explosives, which failed to detonate, through the gates leading to the police station, similar to a strike in the capital Abuja in June, carried out by radical Islamist sect, Boko Haram.
"Detectives combed the car for clues on Monday that would assist in further investigations. Following up on one of the clues, detectives were able to trace the source of the explosive materials to a store in Maiduguri," Simeon Midenda, Borno state police commissioner, told reporters on Friday.
"Investigations so far revealed 13 bottles of aluminium powder, one packet of face masks and a packet of hand gloves were bought from the store on Aug. 8, by those who sponsored the bombing attempt."
Midenda gave no details of who the police believed the sponsors or bombers were. He said documents in the shop show significant purchases were made on dates prior to other bomb attacks over the last year.
Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, has been the scene of months of attacks by Boko Haram, whose name roughly translated from the local Hausa language is "Western education is sinful". More than 150 people have been killed in attacks this year in the city of around 1.2 million.
Attacks are growing in intensity and spreading further afield. The group claimed responsibility for the attack in the car park of police headquarters in Abuja.
The police commissioner of Yobe, another state in the remote northeast on the Niger border, said one of his patrols arrested eight members of Boko Haram behind a bomb attack last week and had transferred them to police headquarters in Abuja.
Bomb blasts in the north have replaced militant attacks on oil facilities hundreds of miles away in the southern Niger Delta as the main security threat in Nigeria.
Boko Haram's views, which include wanting sharia law more widely applied across Nigeria, are not backed by most of the country's Muslim population, the largest in sub-Saharan Africa.
President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed a committee to look into the unrest in the northeast. The team was supposed to deliver its report on Tuesday but was given a two-week extension after presenting preliminary findings. The Lagos State Government has alerted Lagosians of the impending heavy rainfall which is to begin next week.
The government urged Lagosians to brace up and desist from dumping refuse on drainage channels because the August break was over and that heavy rain would begin again as from next week which might result in flood if proper care was not taken.
In order to avert another tragedy like the Sunday, 10 July heavy rain that led to massive flooding in several parts of the Lagos metropolis, the government has begun massive clearing of drainage channels across the state.
Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello visited System II channel on Wednesday to inspect the level of work being done by the contractor, Zapex Construction Company.
The System II channel which measures 10km begins from Onipanu and runs through Bajulaiye to the University of Lagos and across five local government areas which include Lagos Mainland, Shomolu, Bariga, Kosofe and some parts of Mushin.
According to Bello, heavy rainfall should be expected as from next week according to the prediction by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NIMET, saying that there was the need for Lagosians to brace up and embrace proper sanitary measures aimed at minimising flood.
“We should be prepared for more rains as from next week. We are taking necessary steps to minimise flood. People should realise that it is to their own interest not to dump refuse into drainage channels because the 10 July flood was caused by blocked drainage.
“What informed this tour is the aftermath of Governor Babatunde Fashola’s tour of affected areas by the 10 July flood. We have come to the end of the August break and we should expect to see rains falling as from next week,” he stated.
Bello, who was at the UNILAG part of System II Channel told newsmen that the government had concluded arrangement to line all its drainage channels to pave way for easy clearance whenever it wants to remove refuse from blocked channels.
According to him, all channels would be lined like it was done at the UNILAG section, saying that it would take at least one year to line the entire System II Channel.
The commissioner explained that before lining a channel could be done, it must first of all be dammed, but noted that damming a drainage channel had its necessary evil, which could lead to minor flooding in some areas.
“When you line a channel, it becomes very easy to clean up and maintain such channel,” he said.
Bello added that the state government had started demolishing structures on drainage channels, saying that many parts of the metropolis where structures were erected on drainage path would be visited with the demolition train.
The commissioner lamented that the last heavy rain led to loss of lives and property and that government wanted to prevent this at all costs while appealing to Lagosians not to empty their refuse into drainage channels again.
Chairman, Shomolu Local Government, Hon. Gbolahan Bagostowe said the council had notified the government of the problems faced by residents of the area whenever it rained, saying that the 10 July rain wreaked havoc on the area.
“We have been sensitising the people not to dump refuse into drainage channels. When it rained last time, the bridge on the canal here was blocked with refuse and water could not pass through. So, it entered people’s houses,” he said.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday in Calabar tasked religious leaders to show more concern about sources of huge tithes received from members of the congregation, if the war against corruption is to succeed in the country. Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Mrs. Farida Warizi, who gave this charge at a one-day interactive seminar on economic and financial crimes for state senior executives in Cross River State, said it has become the practise for corrupt government officials and dubious members of the public to pay huge sums as tithes to religious bodies without being asked the source of the wealth. Waziri, who was represented at the seminar by the Head, Strategy and Reorientation, EFCC, Mr. Gabriel Aduda, said religious leaders should find out if the huge funds paid by members as tithes were legitimately earned.
“Prosperity must come legitimately. I feel a responsible pastor should know where the tithe of his worshiper is coming from. How and where did you make the money that you are bringing in as tithe? It is not enough for your member to bring in a huge amount and you say- God bless you, no. “Pastors should be responsible through their members (who are top government officials, members of the public) to want to know how they make money they bring to church. So, it goes beyond just preaching prosperity, they should let the people know that the religion is beyond that. For any soul to prosper it means that soul must be in right standing with the principles that God had laid down by doing the dos and refusing the don’ts,” she added.
Police headquarters in Maiduguri, Borno State collapsed yesterday after a man who crashed his bomb laden vehicle through the gates of the command headquarters was shot dead.
The attempted bomb attack programmed to inflict maximum damage happened shortly before the commencement of the screening of cadet Police officers at the same venue scheduled for yesterday. The Boko Haram sect it was learnt had sent out threat SMS to the Police command that it was going to frustrate yesterday’s screening exercise.
Among the instruments of death recovered from the car were 6 Gas cylinders of 13.6KG weight with its wirings, 1 Air Conditioner Gas Cylinder and two 25 litre Jerry-Cans of fuel. Other items were 1 tin of ABRO Can of 5 B litre Volume of chemicals and 1 Acid Orange Drum of 28KG weight.
The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Mr. Simeon Midenda relieved that the incident provoked no loss of life on the part of the Police nevertheless traced the Police interception of the bomber to prior intelligence on an expected attack.

A popular Nollywood producer (names withheld) and a prominent member of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP) has been arrested after he was caught pants dawn stripping young actresses naked at his audition for a new movie last week in Surulere, Lagos.
Many registered members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) and non guild members came for the audition at a residence opposite the popular Nollywood rendezvous Winnis Hotel. The producer of Locomotive productions said only actresses were needed. But other male actors decided to hang around whilst the audition was going on before the owner of the venue raised an alarm that the actresses were being segxwally abused in one of the rooms. She said she saw one of the young actresses totally stripped and two others were giving blow-job to two members of the casting crew. The male actors rushed into the house and caught the popular producer and two other men engaged in oral sex with two actresses! They blew the whistle and the authorities soon arrived and arrested the producer and his accomplices.
Two armed robbers have been killed while robbing motorists at Omagwa end of the Owerri-Port Harcourt Road, Rivers State.
State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ben Ugwuegbulam, told Vanguard that the robbers opened fire on a police patrol vehicle and a gun battle ensued. He said two of the robbers were shot dead and their rifles recovered.
In Asaba, Delta State, detectives from the state Police Command recovered the head of the housewife who was recently beheaded at Bomadi area of the state.
State Police Command’s spokesman, Mr. Charles Muka, said, weekend: “The head of the victim had been recovered under a palm tree in the bush. It was neatly wrapped in a polythene bag.
“It was recovered following the confession of one of the suspects who took our men to the spot.”
The beheaded housewife, identified as Mrs. Truserefa College, was said to have gone into Olomu bush to pick fruits but never came home alive. A search party organised by her husband led to the discovery of the headless body.
In Port Harcourt, Ugwuegbulam said: “Along Omagwa-Ozuoha Road, two robbers, who robbed villagers and vehicles travelling from Port Harcourt to Owerri, sustained fatal injuries in a gun battle with Police patrol team at Omagwa Road. Two guns were recovered from the hoodlums who were rushed to the hospital where they were confirmed dead. We are on the trail of the others who fled.”

Dear Linda, I read with sadness the interview Odi granted another online site, (that is if he really said those things) and decided to react. He said in the interview that our marriage was dissolved in 2007 because I was having extra marital affairs. He's a big liar that has lost all my respect. How is this possible when our second child was delivered in September 2008? And how is it possible that our marriage ended in 2007 when we did our traditional in absentia in March 2009? (attached are pictures of our traditional marriage in Benin). Is it possible for a man to catch his wife having extra marital affairs and still pay her bride price? He paid my bride price in 2009 and I only recently found out he was also dating Mercy at the same time.
Odi also said in the interview that he has not been in contact with us since 2007. Did he really say those things? Linda, I sent you pictures of our son's one year birthday in which he was present.
How come he was here in Canada, November 2008 to see the new born baby and left in December. He later visited in May 2009 and we celebrated our daughter's 3rd year Birthday together @ Christ Embassy here in Canada . He came back in August 2009 during Pastor Chris programme and witnessed our son's 1st year birthday. He was last here in December 2010.
I only started noticing a distance from him last year, and when I asked him what the matter was, he didn't say, only for him to try to drag my father to court to sign divorce papers last month.

A lady called Lovely Okojie claims to be your legally married wife. She said in an email to us that you're planning to marry another wife without her knowledge and consent. Is that true?
Thanks for asking the true state of this scandal, yes I know the said Lovely, she is not my legally married wife anymore, the pictures and relationship she is talking about was dissolved in 2007. Yes I am planning to marry another wife and seeing we're not together since 2007, I don't need her consent.
Once and for all, clear the air about your relationship with Lovely Okojie. Are both of you dating, married, or divorced, what's the situation?
My earlier answer to your question says it all; I am no longer with her.
Lovely Okojie said on the phone with one of our reporters that you told her that Mercy Johnson was just a business partner and that you were in Nigeria to do some contracts and suddenly she started reading online that you're going to marry her. Is that true?
We broke up in 2007 when she was having extra marital affairs, after the demise of the relationship, I relocated to Nigeria, and later heard she has moved to Canada, I can't be living with her when she is based in Canada and I have been living in Nigeria all this years. I met mercy in 2008 and we've been dating since then, Lovely surely knows why she is coming up with such lies to destroy my relationship, because I told her about this wedding myself last year 2010.
She supplied us evidence of your marriage to her and photographs of you playing with your lovely kids – and that touched the hearts of our readers. What do you have to say about that, are the proofs real?
Yes they're real pictures taken long time ago, I love my kids and I always try to be in contact with them.

Three farmers have died as a result of snakebite in Shuwa village in Madagali local government area of Adamawa, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
Thirteen other persons have also been hospitalised and treated for snakebites at the Christian Health Centre, Shuwa, in the last two weeks, according to residents.
NAN learnt that large numbers of poisonous snakes are on the loose in Kwajiti, Dzuyal, Paalam and Shuwa villages due to the mountainous nature of the environment.
The growing density of snakes has been exposing communities to incessant attacks, especially during the rainy season when the snakes move about in the open.
At least 35 persons were killed and 143 others treated of snakebites during the last cropping season in the area.
Most of the victims, including women and children, were attacked while working in the farms or while at home.
Some villagers, who spoke with NAN in Shuwa, urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide snake repellents and anti-snake injections to facilitate the quick treatment of victims.
Suleiman Duhu, the sole administrator of Shuwa Development Area, said the authority had expended more than ₦1.4 million to procure anti-snake injections for the treatment of patients in the last one year.
"The rate of snakebites is alarming and beyond our control. We are sponsoring the patients for treatment at the Christian Health Centre, Shuwa.
"We are calling for assistance from NEMA and other health related bodies to control the disaster," Mr Duhu said.
He also accused the Adamawa State Ministry of Health of neglect in spite of formal complaints lodged before it on the development.
"The ministry had promised to provide hand gloves, rain boot, snake repellents and other preventive kits, but it is yet to redeem its pledge.
"We are calling on the NEMA and the state government to come to our rescue and control the spate of destruction of lives by the snakes," he added.
A farmer, Gambo Turai, told NAN that the snakes were making life unbearable for the residents.
"We are living in perpetual fear of working in the farm or even staying at home because you do not know when the snakes will strike.
"Many people have lost their lives to the snakes," Mr Turai said and called for urgent measures to control the situation.

An Indian woman with two wombs has given birth to two boys, one from each uterus.
Rinku Devi, 28, from the northern city of Patna, had expected to deliver twins. Instead, the babies were conceived from two eggs fertilised at different times, each of which then developed in a separate womb.
Ms Devi has a double uterus, also known as uterus didelphys. Less than 100 women worldwide are known to have been pregnant in both wombs.
The chance of a woman with two wombs having two separate births is estimated to be around one in five million.
Despite having already given birth to a single baby four years ago, Ms Devi was unaware she had the rare medical condition.
"I got to know about having two uteruses when I was already in labour pain," Ms Rinka was reported as saying in the Daily Mail.
"I didn't know how to react. I was in pain and quite scared. I had not heard of anything like this before. I got to know about the rarity and the severity of this condition days after my delivery.
"I am very happy and feel proud to have survived through this. When I was told I was carrying twins, I thought they would look the same, but I am happy they look different. I want to thank God for giving me a new life," she said.
The premature babies were delivered by Caesarean section at the Mati Sadan Prijat Nursing Home in Muzzaffarpur by gynaecologist Dr Dipti Singh. The babies weighed 4lbs and 4oz and 3lbs 3oz.
During normal fetal growth, the uterus develops from two small tubes called Mullers ducts, which usually join to form a single uterus. However, in some cases the tubes fail to join completely, and two cavities or wombs are formed.
The two wombs may share a set of Fallopian tubes, ovaries, cervix or honeypot, but some women also have duplicates of these.
Women with the condition are usually at a higher risk of miscarriage, premature birth and bleeding during pregnancy.
