Muhammadu Buhari has warmly congratulated ex-president Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in an early message for his 79 birthday on March 5, Saturday.

Femi Adesina, presidential media aide issued a statement saying that Buhari affirms that the ex-president, who is approaching the octogenarian cycle, has contributed immensely to the institutionalization of democracy in Nigeria and Africa through his personal sacrifice, extensive local and international networks, and God-given wisdom.

The statement reads in part: “President Buhari believes that Chief Obasanjo’s place in global history is assured for successfully handing over power to a civilian government in 1979 after serving as a military Head of State, and returning to power in 1999 through elections to stabilize the polity, during which he most remarkably negotiated a debt relief for Nigeria.

124  Forum / Politics / Why N5,000 stipend, school feeding not feasible - Senator Goje on: 4-03-2016 09:51 PM

Senator Danjuma Goje insists the N5,000 promised to one million Nigerians and the school feeding contained in the 2016 budget is not feasible.

Senator Danjuma Goje insists the N5,000 stipend promised to one million Nigerians by the federal government as contained in the 2016 budget may not be implemented anytime soon.

Goje who is the chairman, Senate committee on appropriation said the lack of a detailed, clear-cut structure laid down for implementation of the project was the reason why its implementation has suffered a setback, Daily Post reports.

Speaking at an interactive session organised by the joint National Assembly committee on appropriation with government officials in Abuja, on Thursday, March 3, Goje noted that there was no explanation as to who would choose the one million people entitled to the N5000 or what indices will be used in determining who should benefit from the stipend.

He said: “We have not gotten clear explanations to these numerous issues surrounding the implementation of this money. Even the afternoon school feeding contained in the budget is not feasible because some students study under non-conducive environment. Will feeding them enhance their learning?”

125  Forum / Politics / Nigeria set to unveil first tank on: 4-03-2016 09:45 PM

Nigeria will be unveiling its first own domestically-made prototype of the armourd personnel carrier (APC) in September.

Major General Bamidele Ogunkale, director general of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), has revealed this on March 4, Thursday.

Ogunkale was speaking while receiving Brig Gen Christopher Musa paid him a courtesy visit at the DICON headquarters in Kaduna.

The director general has said that corporation hopes to launch mass production.

He said: “By September this year, we hope to unveil the first prototype APC and with presidential support, we will go into mass production.”

“Nigerians try to compare and contrast Brazil Defence Industries with DICON. Whatever hurdles we have identified, we should clear them and move forward. I am optimistic that President Muhammadu Buhari who said he is not happy with the wreck in DICON against the hard earned foreign exchange going out for purchase of arms and ammunition, would  no doubt give DICON the needed support.”
