2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigeria makes electric car, power bike on: 10-05-2012 08:33 AM
As the issue of environmental pollution rages and nations are seeking alternative energy sources devoid of carbon emission, Nigeria, as a major oil-exporter, will be hard hit if nothing is done. To this end, Professor James Omoleye of the Department of Chemical Engineering and  former Director, Centre for Research, Covenant University, Ota Ogun State, began a series of researches with his team which culminated in the making of an electric automobile and a power bike. In this chat with Vanguard Learning, Omoleye says Nigeria is far ahead of some nations in this area. Excerpts:

For Professor James Omoleye: “Nigeria is an oil-exporting country and today, the green revolution which is trying to promote mobility without atmospheric pollution, is driving the whole world to look for alternative way of transportation and that has led to some research on electric automobile.

“Electric automobile is not a new thing. In fact, somebody said it was there before fuel combustion engine came but was not efficient at that time. The use of petrol engine took over because it was more efficient. Now, because of pollution and electronic advancement which has made electric automobiles very efficient, there is a kind of shift. People want to look into electric automobile as a means of mobility.”

Reducing pollution by 80 per cent: If you can reduce the amount of pollution in the air coming through automobiles, then you would have reduced pollution by almost 80 per cent and life on earth will be safer. So there is now a tendency to move towards electric mobility, not only automobiles, even boats and trains. In advanced countries, the number of electric automobiles in use is on the increase.

Of course, many are now using what we call hybrid which is electric engine and fuel combustion engine together. This reduces the amount of fuel you burn. But the ultimate is electric automobile so that we can do away with pollution of the atmosphere. That is already gaining ground now in countries like the US and China. In China, electric bikes are common and a number of their taxis are electric. So very soon, electric mobility will take over from fuel combustion.

Electric car and power bike “I started in 2005 to research into electric automobiles. Our electric automobile came on the road on July 1, 2010 and I have been using it but not continuously being the only one we have made, we don’t just use it any how. What we did was to buy a fuel combustion engine car, removed the engine and designed and assembled the electric engine inside it.

We have also advanced in the sense that the first one we did, we brought in the parts but between then and now, we have worked on two of the three major components which are the speed regulator and the charging system because after running about 70km, you charge for six hours continuously.

Today, we have successcfully designed and assembled our own speed controller. We have tested it by mounting it on a four-wheel cycle and it is moving very well. We have almost perfected the charging system. Of course, since September 2007, we have been able to come up with a charging system but it was not as efficient as what we have now. We are replacing the one we did in 2010 with the one we have now which is a lot faster and more reliable.

The only component we have not started to do here is the electric motor itself. But that is not a big deal because there is no vehicle company that manufactures all the parts. You get some parts from one company and then you design some,” said the professor of chemical engineering.

Ahead of many nations “We have gone very far and I think we are ahead of many other nations. We are ahead of Australia because they are not yet making those things and they are the ones in the forefront of electric automobile. An Indian man that came for business in Abuja saw my programme on television and came all the way to look for us here.

He said he came because they also have interest in electric automobile and that his company was given approval by the Indian Government to start introducing electric mobility into their taxi system. By the time we talked, I found out that we are ahead of them. They don’t make any parts and yet, they have got to the point of changing their taxi system to electric automobiles but we have gone to the point of producing the controller and the charger,” he said.

What Nigeria must do “Even as an oil-exporting country, we cannot help encouraging something that will not consume fuel for two reasons: One, we are not making even the fuel combustion vehicles, we are importing them so if in the next five or six years the whole world is changing into electric automobile, you say ‘oh we are not going to go into that,’ you will be forced to import the electric automobiles they are making and good enough, petroleum is not only used for fuel combustion by automobiles, there are hundreds of products today that are made from petroleum just that Nigeria is only focusing on exporting crude.

Our clothes are from petroleum. When you talk of petrochemicals, the basic raw material is petroleum. So all we need to do is for us to try to focus on petrochemicals and start to divert the crude we cannot export to produce other things that can be exported.

Of course we will still be selling our crude but not as much as before. This is one reason why we should not say we are not going to encourage electric automobile production. Two, for now, we are only importing vehicles, when you join the race of electric automobiles manufacturing; you become one of the countries that will be earning revenue from exporting your own electric automobiles.

So while the fuel is not used for fuelling cars again, generators for the charging the automobiles will still be using fuel . You will now join them in also exporting vehicles and so you can increase your revenue base more than what it was before. We have gone very far and I think we are among the top five countries,” he noted.

3  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Focus Story: Randy men beware, Yahoo girls on the prowl! on: 7-04-2012 08:58 PM
Lies they tell to defraud online admirers Talk of internet fraud, most people in Nigeria think of men and the so called Yahoo boys. However, their female counterparts are gradually taking over. The game plan is also not too different, but this one is mainly targeted at sex adventurers as JIBOLA OYEKUNLE reports.

Trouble times are here for diehard womanisers who would stake anything to take a young lady to bed, following revelations that young women, especially those on the campuses are gradually taking over Yahoo-Yahoo, an internet fraud, from their male counterparts.

Recent findings revealed that the internet prank is currently being played by young women to extort money from unsuspecting men making amorous on-line overtures to them.

Unlike their male counterparts the ladies’ targets are not necessarily the white magas as more black men especially some randy money bags are said to have been falling prey to the internet gimmicks.

The prank, particularly when played by luscious ladies with pretty faces, seductive figures, sexy cleavages usually packaged in form of pictures and posted on the internet, needs no influence of an African charm before a randy man would succumb.

The ladies, it was gathered, are taking advantage of the easy availability of the mobile internet facilities being provided by different network providers, aided by the BlackBerry revolution, which now allows every Tom, Dick and Harry to access internet on their Black-berry devices.

They are also said to make use of different dating and networking sites such as Badoo, Facebook, Twitter, Black Berry Messenger (BBM) where they pack-age their pictures to seduce men and further ensnare them with all sorts of lies to make such men send money into their accounts.

Such ladies, findings revealed, would stop communicating with their respective victims by the time they have extorted enough from them and realized that the man is beginning to suspect a foul play.

Then they move on to their next prey.  “That is simply how a smart lady can survive without necessarily sleeping with men. And the truth is that many men are still gullible as they easily dance to our tune even when they are not seeing you one on one.

A beautiful lady does not need a charm to get a man, especially if that man is an unprincipled womaniser,” said a female university student, who claimed to have survived so far on proceeds from her internet exploits.

Another who craved anonymity revealed: “I play men, especially the married men because they deserve to be so treated. In my own case, the bulk of my victims are rich Nigerian men. First, I am from a poor background and I need a lot of money to take care of myself and also pay my school fees.

Unless you re-ally like that man and you just feel comfortable having sex with him. Otherwise, there are ways you can extort money from him without sleeping with him. “The truth is that no man would want to assist you financially without asking you out.

But how many men would I sleep with? So, you just have to play smart because you need money. Girls are doing this all over the campuses. In fact, I know more than a thousand of girls in my own school who dupe guys on the net. The game is simple.

Chat up the guy and give him fake details about you. Give him an impression that you are from a rich background. This will make him to rate you high in whatever he would send to you later. “Give him audience and after some time, pretend to be in love with him.

Depending on the way you handle them, most men would assume that you are their girlfriend and would want to do anything to prove that they are caring.

If he is based in Abuja, tell him you are in Lagos, Port Harcourt or any other place that is far. Most men would prefer that you come to them and would eventually send money for flight into your ac-count after they must have sent money for your hairdo, cloths and settled your school bills.

By the time you count the money some men would have sent to you, you would be having over N200, 000 in your bank account. If you are lucky and smart, you can be making an average of N100, 000 or more every month. “Unless you are greedy, you don’t need to travel to go and meet such a man and allow him to have sex with you.

All you need to do is give an excuse. By the time you keep collecting his money and giving excuses for not being able to travel to meet him, he would stop disturbing you.

Sometimes, some would still continue to send money to you so as to persuade you to fall for them. “The more reluctant you are, the more desperate some men become.

This gives some of us who have the guts an advantage to make more money. If you are somebody that can’t control your feelings, however, you may not be able to sustain your prank with some guys because they put so much pressure on you to succumb and they would eventually succeed in taking you to bed.

In my own case, I stop communicating with such a man when I realize that his pres-sure is becoming too much to bear.” Until now, the practice was a criminal act associated with young men even as findings revealed that in spite of the recent battle against cyber crime the continuous increase in the number of jobless youths, especially graduates of higher institutions may have in recent time attracted more initiates into this so-called Yahoo deal, as more youths now appear desperate to live life on a fast lane.

More alarming, these crops of daring and desperate youths, according to findings, are fast taking to diabolical means to defraud their victims, who are mostly white.

Although voodoo, a practice involving belief in sorcery and use of charms, has no scientific backing as to its presumed efficacy, its practitioners believe in its manipulative power to aide success in all areas of human endeavour.

Recent findings by Saturday Mirror showed that apart from their often well-articulated deceptive overtures against their hapless victims many of the ‘yahoo boys’, as the internet fraudsters are popularly called, rely heavily on this means in ensnaring their unsuspecting ‘business partners’.

Before now, the so-called yahoo boys were a common sight at different cyber cafes across the country where they browsed in search of new online fraudulent deals.

But following the recent war against cyber crimes in the country and their arrest and prosecution in the courts of law many of them, we learn, now perpetrate the heinous crime in the privacy of their bedrooms.

If you are on BBM, Twitter or facebook, this picture shouldn't look strange to you, as it was the order of the day on people's dp, fb wall, TL e.t.c , claiming a guy killed the lady because she cheated on him.. And as you know Nigerians now, without any confirmation, everybody was already using the picture and writing different things., reliable sources confirmed that the lady in question is not dead and she doesn't even know who started the whole rumor thing about her death and putting her picture with a dead person..
She was furious when she heard this and wrote on her update...

But seriously, this isn't funny, whoever came up with that must be crazy and I'm sure the person has a big bomb in his or her head.. I mean.. Imagine waking up in the morning and you start hearing news of your death plus pictures confirming you are dead and everybody is sympathizing with you when you are alive and OK!!!.. Na wa o..

15  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 92 Nigerians repatriated from Britain on: 4-03-2011 06:17 PM
Ninety-two Nigerians who were deported by the British government, on Thursday landed at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

The Nigerians who arrived the Lagos airport aboard a chartered plane with registration number 509 at about 9.00am, consist of 77 males and 15 females. “Two of them were brought home on drug related cases, four of them on police cases, while the rest were on immigration offenses,” said an immigration source at the international airport who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Deportees lament new law

A few deportees contacted by NEXT at the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) premises, expressed sadness at a new law put in place by the British government, explaining that the initiative has led to the “massive deportation” embarked upon by the government.

A female deportee who insisted on giving only her first name, Ann, said that she: “I am being frustrated, I can’t do anything now. I have been in detention for over one week before I was deported. I have been in London since 2004. “I have always been renewing my documents until now that I was deported because it is their new law that Nigerians should be repatriated back. I have everything including cars, and I work in a good place; but even people that have children were also repatriated from London,” she said.

A male deportee described the move by the British government as one that is bias, stressing that the government is being conservative. “In fact, the British government is bad and very conservative, they don’t like Nigerians; we were being deported irrespective of the fact that most of us have our documents,” he explained.

“Like myself, I have been in detention for three months before I was finally deported. I went to London to study Electrical Engineering and after I finished my study, I decided to stay in the UK up till now that I was deported,” he said.

S'African police arrest 7 Nigerian 'bogus doctor's

Seven doctors from Nigeria, some of whom were said to be 'consulting quacks' while others that were qualified allegedly employed people without the right qualifications, have been arrested by South African police at hospitals and consulting rooms in five provinces.

The seven were arrested in Hawks' raids in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Western Cape, spokesman McIntosh Polela said in a statement.

Polela said, "One of the raids took place at Matlala hospital in Limpopo, where a qualified doctor was arrested. This doctor also owns three practices where he allegedly employs bogus doctors who make use of his name and practice number."

"Another qualified doctor was arrested in Pretoria. He also owns three practices in which he too employs bogus doctors using his name and practice number."

According to the statement, a man posing as a doctor was arrested at B J Vorster Hospital in the Eastern Cape.

"The Hawks are baffled as to how he managed to secure himself a job at a government hospital.

"We can only speculate how many people have entrusted their lives to these people believing that they were consulting doctors when in actual fact they are consulting quacks," Polela said.

The seven would face charges of corruption, fraud, indecent assault and impersonating doctors.

Again, Spain deports 60 Nigerians

BARELY three days after 85 Nigerians were deported from Europe, another batch of 60 were, on Thursday, again deported by the Spanish government, thus bringing to 145 the number of Nigerians deported in the last three days.

The deportees, who arrived the Murtala Muha-mmed Airport, Lagos, aboard an Air Europa chartered flight, were brought in at 5.30 p.m.

They comprised 45 males and 15 females and were brought back for committing various immigration offences, ranging from drug trafficking to immigration-related offences.

According to sources in the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the deportees, accompanied by law enforcement agent from Madrid, Spain, were received at the Lagos airport by their Nigerian counterparts and other law enforcement agents.

Those who were brought based on drug-related offences were handed over the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further interrogation, while those with immigration offences were taken away by the NIS for further interrogation.

Only on Tuesday, 85 were deported, comprising 56 males, 19 females and 10 children who were said to have committed several immigration offences, credit card fraud and other social vices.
