No fewer than 8 people have been killed in a violent clash between rival thug groups at Oshodi, Ajao Estate and Ejigbo areas of Lagos, Nigeria.

Residents fled for their lives as residents said Police were not available for immediate help and assistance.

Ascology News attempted to reach the Public Relations of the Nigerian Police, Lagos Command, Superintendent Jaiyeoba Joseph, but calls to his telephone were not immediately answered,

It was gathered that the clash broke out between rival factions of the Oodua People's Congress (OPC) of the Gani Adams and the Fredrick Fasehun's faction.

Residents say the attack was a reprisal attack to avenge the death of their members who were allegedly killed during a heated argument at a ferry operation centre.

The OPC through its founder, Dr. Fredrick Fasheun has however denied involvement of the group in the incident pointing fingers at members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
43  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Senate orders FRSC to stop issuing new number plates and driver’s license on: 29-02-2012 07:10 PM
Senate on Wednesday ordered the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to stop issuing new vehicle number plates and driver’s license.

The order follows the adoption of a motion on new number and driver’s sponsored by Senator Dahiru Kuta of Niger state and 19 others.

The Senators during the consideration of the motion on Wednesday described the new vehicle number plates issued by the commission as illegal noting that act that set up FRSC does not empower it to issue number plates.

“The commission was not established principally as a revenue generating agency for states or Federal Government,” Senator Kuta said while promoting the motion.

He said the new driver’s license which the FRSC launched in 2011 “is now issued for N6, 000 as against the N3, 000 while the new number plates have suddenly jumped from N5, 000 to an astronomical N15, 000,” he added.

Senator Smart Adeyemi from Kogi state said the cost of the new number plates is too exorbitant for motorists and is illegal.

He said that the “FRSC has abandoned its mandate, it was established to ensure safety on highways, but what the FRSC is trying to do now is to render other government agencies redundant.”

The Senate President, David Mark while ruling on the motion said the new number plates by FRSC was an imposition of additional burden on Nigerians.

“Let them not impose additional expenditure on the people and their primary objective was not to generate revenue,” he said.

Similarly, the House of Representatives had in last November asked the FRSC to stop the issuance of new vehicle number plates and driving licence.
The House had directed its Committee on FRSC to investigate the “rationale, necessity and circumstances” for the commission’s decision to replace the existing number plates and driving licence.

The FRSC had set a deadline of August 2012 for Nigerian drivers to obtain the new driving license and number plates which were last year commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to the FRSC the upgraded license and plate numbers are interlinked and will be connected to each driver, in order to help the FRSC track all road offences and monitor the driving behaviour of all vehicle owners.

45  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Abuja Court orders police to pay N12m damages to salesboy on: 29-02-2012 06:16 PM
ABUJA, - An Abuja High Court on Wednesday ordered the Nigeria Police to pay N12 million to a 34-year-old man, Mr Odu Johnson, as damages for unlawful detention and violation of his fundamental rights.

Justice Mudashiru Oniyanyi gave the order, while delivering judgment in a suit filed by Johnson, asking for N150 million from the police as damages for unlawful detention.

Johnson had dragged the Inspector-General of Police and FCT Commissioner of Police to court, claiming that he was detained for allegedly stealing 12 tyres belonging to one Mrs Suzy Micheal.

Johnson said that he worked for Micheal as a sales boy and left without receiving his one month outstanding salary.

He said that after two weeks, Micheal called him to come over to collect his salary, adding that when he went he was arrested by the police and detained for 13 days.

Oniyangi said that evidence before him proved that Johnson was held in solitary confinement for 13 days, without being arraigned before any court of law.

“There is unchallenged evidence before me from which I believe the applicant was in detention for 13 days in 2007 and was subjected to untold hardship.

“I also have evidence to show that the police subjected him to degrading and inhuman treatment. He was in solitary confinement and held hostage for 13 days.

“The conduct of the police in detaining the applicant beyond one day, as it is mandated in our Constitution, unless his case is charged to court, was aggravated in nature.

“I hold the view that the action of the  police was reckless, vindictive, high-handed and oppressive.

“It also depicts an abuse of official powers and gross indiscipline by our men in uniform. It is reprehensive to the extreme and showed a gross disregard for the rule of law.”

He also condemned  the attitude of the police in the suit, as the police failed to file counter motion though served with court papers.

“It is on record that the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police were served with court papers, 13 times for them to enter appearance and say their side of the story.

“But they refused to do so since the case was filed in 2008. They never deemed it fit to appear in court even once, this  means that they are not challenging their acts.”

PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria, Feb 29 (Reuters) - Pirates opened fire on a Dutch cargo ship a few miles from the Nigeria's Port Harcourt, kidnapping the ship's master and an engineer and stealing cash, a security source and anti-piracy group AKE said on Wednesday.

An AKE statement said the ship, a "Dutch-owned, Curacao-flagged refrigerated cargo vessel", was attacked on Tuesday around 4.10 p.m. (1510 GMT), the latest in a string of pirate attacks in the oil-exporting Gulf of Guinea.

"Eight armed men boarded and opened fire towards the bridge, stole cash and crew's possessions, and kidnapped the master and chief engineer before escaping. A third crew member was left unaccounted for," it said.

"It is likely the two crew members abducted will be held for ransom onshore."

Pirates off the coast of Nigeria tend to raid ships for cash and cargo rather than hijacking the crews for ransom like their counterparts off the coast of Somalia, but onshore kidnapping is a major business in Nigeria, especially in oil producing coastal areas like Port Harcourt.

A security source working for an oil company in Port Harcourt gave the same details, adding that there were 14 crew on board. One crew member was injured, he added.

"Vessels in the area are advised to maintain strict watch rotas and exercise vigilance at all times," AKE said, adding that 13 attacks had been recorded off West Africa in 2012 so far, seven of which occurred off Nigeria.

“The incident caused a stir as some friends of the deceased confronted and fought with the suspects.

“The details of what exactly transpired are still sketchy because the incident occurred at night but another corpse, identified as one Sumonu, was also found at Ajao Estate later. We (Police) do not know if his death is related to Eze’s killing.”

59  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / A Banker in Kaduna Gets 34yrs imprisonment for Giving Illegal Loan. on: 24-02-2012 05:20 AM
A signal has again been sent to operators in the banking industry that all operations should be with recourse to due process and laid down principles. For granting himself and his other colleagues loans without following due process, a Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna has sentenced a banker to 34 years imprisonment.
The banker, Mr. Ojo Bankole Ezekiel was an Accountant and Operation Officer with Cooperative Savings and Loans Limited, a primarymortgage institution in Abuja.
He was arraigned alongside a former branch manager of the bank, Mr. Adesiyan Adeniyi Adeyinka, nowdeceased, on a 17 count charge of granting advances to staff of the bank contrary to laid down procedures.
Specifically, the convict and the deceased manager were alleged to have criminally granted a loan of N20million to themselves and two other staff of the bank. Though he admitted granting only a loan of N13millon, he however pleaded not guilty to the 17 count-charge imputed to him and this necessitated his full trial.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, that prosecuted him called three witnesses in the course of the trial and tendered several documents. At the close of the prosecution’s case, the convict’s counsel filed a no-case submission which was overruled by the court.
Consequently, the convict was called to proceed with his defence but he opted not to proceed and rested his case with the EFCC.
In his ruling, the presiding judge, Justice M. I. Cuiaba convicted the banker on all the 17 counts and sentenced him to two years on each count, adding up to 34 years imprisonment .The jail term is however to run concurrently, implying that the accused will only spend two years in prison.
