Love is as strong as death, so goes a popular saying. To Mercy Jessa, 35, a Lagos-based woman; it is even stronger and powerful than death. The greatest mistake of her life might probably be going to her lover’s bosom with her close friend, Evelyn. As love would have its way, reverse became the case as her ‘Romeo’ eventually ended by dumping her for her ‘best’ friend.
Not moved by the sudden metamorphoses, the estranged lover insists he preferred her lover’s friend as wife than his ‘ex’ thus he went ahead and married her, thereby leading to unabated ‘war’ between the two friends and the aggrieved Mercy allegedly used a blade to slash her friend in reciprocation.
The angry woman was arrested after the bloody attack and has been arraigned before an Apapa Magistrate’s Court, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, for allegedly using a razor blade to shred her friend, identified as Evelyn John.
The discarded Mercy allegedly ambushed her ‘villain’, Evelyn at Better Life Motor Park, Ijora Badia, a suburb of Lagos and used the sharp object to cut her face.
The victim who sustained severe injuries was rushed to a hospital where she is currently recuperating.
Mercy was charged to court under Section 244 of the Criminal Code, law of Lagos State.
At the court, the accused pleaded not guilty and the presiding magistrate, Mr. H. O. A. Amos, granted her bail in the sum of N10, 000 with one surety in like sum.
Mercy would be remanded in the prison custody pending when she will meet the bail conditions just as the case was adjourned till 12 March 2012 for further hearing.

Lassa fever outbreak has killed not less than 40 people while infecting several dozens over the 6 six weeks across Nigeria, an official said today.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Lassa fever is responsible for some 5,000 deaths annually in West Africa.

Officials claim that a total of 397 cases have been reported, with 90 cases confirmed.

KNOW THE FACTS-WHAT IS IT?
It is an acute viral infection associated with persistent high fever caused by Lassa Virus.

WHERE IS IT FOUND?
It was discovered first in Lassa, Borno State, Nigeria in 1969. However, it can be found in other places, especially in West Africa e.g. Liberia, Guinea and Seirra Leone.

HOW IS IT SPREAD?
People become infected by eating infected bush rat or eating food contaminated with the rat excreta/urine deposited on surfaces such as floors, beds, household utensils or in food and water (eg. grains spread out to dry along the roads by farmers). Person to person spread also occurs by direct contact or inhalation of infected body fluids such as blood, urine, saliva, throat secretion etc..

WHO CAN BE INFECTED?
All age groups. Persons at greater risk are those in areas of poor sanitation and health workers managing such cases.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS?
The illness usually starts with fever, general weakness and malaise. Other signs and symptoms are headache, sore throat, pain behind the Bosom  bone, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cough, abdominal pain and red spots. In severe cases, it may progress to swollen face, bleeding (from mouth, nose, and honeypot), gastrointestinal tract and low blood pressure.

HOW CAN LASSA FEVER BE PREVENTED?
Avoid contact between rats and human beings;
Keep your house and Environment clean.
Cover all foods and water properly.
Cook all foods thoroughly
Block all rat hideouts
Do not spread food where rats can have access to it.
And as soon as you suspect Lassa fever, or you have persistent fever not responding to the standard treatment for malaria and typhoid, report to the nearest Health facility.

TREATMENT OF SUSPECTED CASES
Early treatment with Oral Ribavirin is recommended. In severe infection, injection of Ribavirin is used. Barrier nursing is highly recommended.
BE CAREFUL and pass the message on.

72  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigerian Presenter, Ugochi Anyaka Wins UN Award. on: 22-02-2012 06:26 AM
Nairobi — A radio journalist from Nigeria has won the United Nations Environment Programme's Young Environmental Journalist Award (YEJA), beating over 120 entries from reporters across Africa.

Ugochi Anyaka (29) received her award at a special ceremony held during the 12th Special Session of the UNEP Governing Council / Global Ministerial Environment Forum in Nairobi, Kenya.

The winning report, entitled Saving the Trees for Paper Briquettes, was broadcast on ASO Radio in Nigeria, where Ms. Anyaka works as a journalist and presenter.

The radio feature profiled a project in a low-income suburb of Abuja that manufactures briquettes from waste paper, in order to provide an alternative fuel to traditional firewood.

The project aims to reduce the health risks associated with indoor use of wood fuel, reduce deforestation and provide a source of income for the briquette makers.

Ms. Anyaka's report also discusses the role of the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

"This story was done to show the opportunities in a changing climate - and not just the woes," said Ugochi Anyaka.

"It also seeks to show the conflicting view points about the Clean Development Mechanism. But ultimately, it tells the story of what some Nigerians are doing to protect their vulnerable environment and save their very existence. Winning the UNEP Young Environmental Journalist Award is the greatest moment of joy in my career. It is such an honour to be recognised in this manner," she added.

The YEJA jury described Ms. Anyaka's winning entry as a "well-researched report that clearly explained the essence of reducing green house gas emissions and the need for creating environmental development in Africa".

The winner was presented with her specially-commissioned trophy by Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director, Joseph Murphy, US Permanent Representative to UNEP and UN-HABITAT and Patricia Okoed-Bukumunhe, the winner of last year's Young Environmental Journalist Award

Ms. Anyaka hosts an environmental radio show "Green Angle" on ASO Radio and also works as a producer, reporter and continuity announcer with the station. She writes an environmental blog, Eco Nigeria, at www.greennigeria.wordpress.com.

She lists her main interests as sustainable development and climate change.

As part of her prize, Ms. Anyaka will take part in a professional exchange visit to the United States, following a specially-designed "green itinerary". Last year's YEJA winner, Patricia Okoed-Bukumunhe of Uganda, took part in a week-long placement with Voice of America in Washington DC, spent time with National Geographic magazine, the US Environmental Protection Agency and attended an environmental journalism conference in Florida.

"With less than four months to go until world governments meet at the UN Sustainable Development Conference (Rio+20) in Brazil, raising public awareness of today's environmental challenges is perhaps more critical than ever," said UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.

"The large number of entries received from journalists from Cairo to Cape Town and Dar es Salaam to Dakar for this year's award, showed that young journalists are becoming an increasingly vital voice for telling the story of Africa's changing environment - and showing the many solutions that are available on the continent. On behalf of UNEP, I congratulate Ugochi Anyaka on her achievement and wish her continued success in her work."

Launched in 2010, the UNEP Young Environmental Journalist Award aims to showcase excellence in the field of environmental reporting and nurture new talent that will help to shape opinion on the environment in Africa, and beyond, in years to come. The award is made possible though funding support from the US Department of State.

This year, a total of 127 entries were received (in English and French) from television, radio, online and print journalists in 28 countries. The diverse topics covered included the economic and environmental impacts of invasive species in Lake Victoria, efforts to reduce plastic bag use in Togo and the breeding of climate change-resilient chickens in Namibia.

The winner was chosen by the YEJA jury, which brought together four experts from the worlds of journalism, development and science. They were Amie Joof, Executive Director of the Senegal-based Inter-African Network for Women, Media, Gender and Development (FAMEDEV), Diran Onifade, journalist and manager with the Nigerian Television Authority and President of the African Federation of Science Journalists, Stanis Nkdundiye, Steering Committee member of the Federation of African Journalists and Sunday Leonard, Special (Scientific) Assistant to the Chief Scientist of UNEP.

75  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Man wants divorce from husband-beating wife on: 20-02-2012 10:42 PM
LAGOS, - A middle-aged auto mechanic on Monday asked a Mushin Grade A Customary Court to dissolve his eight-year old marriage because his wife was allegedly fond of beating him up whenever they quarrelled.

“I have never seen such a troublesome woman like my wife; she hits me with all sorts of wooden and iron objects whenever we have a quarrel and has inflicted several injuries on me. I usually don’t retaliate when she hits me.

“Her actions have been threatening my life and I can’t wait till she kills me before I save myself. “I am tired of the marriage and I want to put an end to it,” Ibrahim Salami pleaded with the court.

Salami also accused Keji, his petty trader wife, of being an unrepentant adulterous woman who was fond of dating other men in the neighbourhood.

“My wife is a wayward woman. I can no longer vouch for her fidelity. She is always hiding the children from me and forbids them from talking to me. I believe she wants to take them to the home of one of her numerous boyfriends.”

But Keji denied the allegations, claiming that it was her husband who dated one of her friends.

“I am a responsible and Godly woman. I am not adulterous. It was Ibrahim who dated my friend in spite of my pleas. He even bragged about his shameful acts. He plays all sorts of mockery music to infuriate me in the house.”

Keji said that the divorce suit filed by Salami was a way of evading his financial responsibilities as a father.

“He wants to divorce me so that he can abandon me and the children. He doesn’t want to take care of them. He has never really cared about their welfare.

She urged the court not to grant her husband’s divorce request, adding that she was still interested in making their marriage work.

The Court President, Mr Abayomi Ipaye, advised the couple that quarrels were inevitable in marriage since it involved two people with different perception and background.

“Both of you are from different backgrounds; you have diverse opinions on various issues, therefore, you will constantly disagree.

“Disagreements breed quarrels in marriage but they can be managed with maturity and a lot of patience.”

He called on the couple to exercise endurance and humility for long lasting and blissful marriage. Ipaye adjourned the case to March 7 for further hearing.

A police Corporal, Mr Emmanuel Okoye, attached to the Ifako Police Station in Lagos, has allegedly kidnapped a 17-year-old girl, Patience Isabor, from her residence in Bariga, Lagos.

Sources said that the incident happened on Feb. 10, when Okoye allegedly entered Patience’s home after shooting her elder sister Blessing in the cheek and hand.

Blessing, 19, is currently critically ill at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, after undergoing series of surgeries to remove bullets from her body.

According to sources, Okoye has been dating Blessing and later dropped her to settle with Patience.

The mother of the girls, Mrs Isabor, opposed the relationship of her two daughters with the police officer.

“Corporal Okoye was dating Blessing the elder sister and their relationship had blossomed over the years but towards the end of 2011, he dumped her and started dating Patience.

“Their mother was against the relationship but Patience and Okoye continued their love until January, 2012, when he came to meet Mrs Isabor that she should allow him to marry Patience.

“Mrs Isabor objected because she wants Patience to continue her education and she does not trust Okoye as he had disappointed her first daughter in the past.

“On Friday, at about 7 p.m, Blessing was at home and their mother was yet to come back from work, Okoye defied their mother’s objection and stormed the house with a black bag containing a gun and kidnapped Patience.

“While he was dragging her away, Blessing stood against him that he cannot take Patience away without the permission of their mother and more so, no one knows where he was taking Patience to.

“As they were arguing, Okoye brought out his gun and shot Blessing on the cheek and on her hand and then took away Patience, “ the source explained.

Lagos State Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO), Mr Joseph Jaiyeoba, who confirmed the incident, told NAN that the police command was looking for Okoye.

Jaiyeoba said that the Commissioner of Police, Mr Yakubu Alkali, has ordered a thorough investigation into the case.

“The CP is aware of the case. We are not declaring Emmanuel wanted yet, we are still looking for him until the appropriate time we will declare him a deserter,” Jaiyeoba said. (NAN)

It was another dark moment for the Nigerian Police Force when well over 14 billion naira was fingered as fraud in the Police pension office, daily post reliably gathered

This was revealed just few weeks after the Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina, disclosed that pension officials within the Office of the Head of Service embezzle over 3 billion naira on monthly bases.

Maina had stressed prior to now that N28bn police pension lay inactive in an identified account at the police pension office.

Dailypost had gathered from an authenticated source that senior officials with the same office were behind this latest fraud.

Investigations revealed that from January 5, 2009 to May 6, 2011 thereabout, the officials drew a total sum of 13, 874 cheques using the name of the Director of Pensions.

“Many  of such cheques are raised daily and endorsed by the cashier of one of the old generation banks for over the counter withdrawal.

“The withdrawals were in flagrant violation of the Federal Government e-payment circular which came into effect on January 1, 2009.

“The monies, once drawn, are shared among the officials,” the source revealed.

At the moment, seven of the officials have been arrested by the EFCC for the fraud however, our correspondents have gathered that five of them were signatories to the account.

Even though the actual names of the fraudsters cannot be ascertained at press time, it was gathered that three directors and a serving permanent secretary of a ministry are the brains behind the fraud.

“Others are top officials of the accounts department of the office. They were picked up in different locations but have been admitted to administrative bail. The commission is however still on the trail of others fingered in the fraud.”

The spokesman of the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed thus, “Yes, we have made some arrests and the money involved is N14bn. We are charging them to court soon and more details will be made known to the public.”
