21  Forum / The Buzz Central / Mike Tyson, Venus And Serena Williams To Storm Abuja on: 4-03-2014 12:59 PM
image<p/>Former world heavy weight boxing champion, Mike Tyson and the Williams sisters – Venus and Serena are expected to storm the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja for the Goodluck, Fashanu inter Sports academy.

Ambassador John Fashanu, who made this known to News men in Abuja, said that the celebrated sports personalities will be in the country topartner them in their quest to set up the first ever all Sports academy in Nigeria.

Fashanu described the project as massive and has the backing of the Nigeria Government which feels that such programme will help empower the youths of the country using sportsas a platform.

He revealed that the Federal Capital Territory administration has made available to them a massive plot of land where the academy would be built.

"The FCT minister has given us a land for the building of the academy. It’s a very big plot of land which is more than enough for the kind of thing we are planning to build there," he said.

The former Wimbledon FC striker noted that apart from Mike Tyson and the Williams sisters, several other top stars in the world of sports would be partnering them in the project. Some of them he said include, Nwankwo Kanu of Nigeria, Linford Christie of the United Kingdom and several others.

"The fact is that these Stars would be in charge of each sports, where they are known for. They will conduct some workshops and clinics for the children and even the coaches that would handle them eventually before they go back to their places. This is not a simple project, we really mean business," he said.

Fashanu said the programmes will not be restricted, as it is open to other Nigerians to come and join hands with him to build the academy.

"I am calling on Nigerians to sow into this project. It is a very important project because it will go a long way to engage our youths in meaningful activities. There has never been an academy like this in Nigeria that involves all theother sports, which is why this one is different. So, anyone that wants to join us in the building of this project, can pay their donation to this account, John Fashanu with ZENITH BANK ACCT NO 1004451687," Fashanu said maintaining that the funds donated would be well accounted for and used for the purpose it was meant for, stressing that he is not ready to tarnish his good name with peoples fund.

"The reason we are opening it up to the public to contribute is because it is a people project. As many as donate would be a shareholder in the project," he said.

22  Forum / The Buzz Central / Fruit Vendor Caught Sprinkling Urine On Fruit on: 4-03-2014 12:29 PM

Zimbabwe – A Bulawayo vendor was caught by her colleagues sprinkling her urine on the fruits she was selling in a bid to attract more customers.

According to a source, the incident happened at Renkini Bus terminus on Saturday afternoon.

The vendor was reportedly spotted by other vendors squatting and urinating in a container. Thereafter it is said that she sprinkled fruits mainly apples and bananas with the urine.

When contacted to give a comment, she could neither confirm nor deny the allegations but said she heard people talking about the incident.
"I am not at liberty to discuss this matter with you. I heard people talking about it and I don’t want issues bothering me since I am still mourning my relative who recently died. Please don’t write the story because I am not feeling well and two of my relatives are also not feeling well," she said while avoiding to confirm or deny whether she was caught sprinkling her products with urine.

However, a fellow vendor confirmed the incident saying she was summoned by other vendors to see her in the despicable act.

"Word has been going on for some time that she habitually sprinkles fruits with her urine but I have never seen her. I asked her what she was doing and why she was doing it but she could not give me a satisfactory response. She later admitted when we got together as committee members to reprimand her," said the source.

A male customer said he had been buying fruits from the woman since he started selling at Renkini and is disappointed that his family has probably been eating contaminated fruits all along.

"I have been buying fruits for my family from her everyday. This is disgusting," he said.

24  Forum / The Buzz Central / Northern Governors Tell Boko Haram To Embrace Dialogue on: 3-03-2014 04:24 PM
image<p/>The Northern States Governors’ Forum, NSGF, has appealed to members of the Boko Haram sect to stop the incessant violence against innocent persons and embrace dialogue.

The group also assured Nigerians, especially those living in the north, that a lot was being done to guarantee peace in the area.

The forum said dialogue is the surest way to resolve grievances and not violence.

Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Niger, Dr Babangida Aliyu, made the call in his reaction to Saturday’s explosions which killed several persons at the heavily-populated Ngomari-Bulum kutu area of Maiduguri, Borno.

"The forum deeply regrets this utterly heinous descent to new depths of terror by the perpetrators at a time when security agencies are doing their best to put an end to it," he said.

Aliyu urged members of Boko Haram to embrace dialogue, assuring them that "the surest way to resolve grievances is through dialogue and not violence".

He then commiserated with the families of those killed or injured during the blast, and called on all security agencies to re-double their efforts in the discharge of their responsibilities.

28  Forum / The Buzz Central / Why President Jonathan Delayed Sanusi’s Sack on: 25-02-2014 12:15 PM
image

Revelations have emerged why Presidency did not remove former Governor of Central Bank (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, last year in spite of the reports indicting him for financial recklessness and abuse of due process by the Financial Reporting Council. Investigations by a source indicated that the crisis in the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which resulted in defection of its members and five governors to the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC), made the action inauspicious.  Indeed, the defections, it was learnt, made PDP to lose itscontrolling majority, consequently, requesting for the sack of Sanusi, which would need at least two-third of the members of the Senate, would have been impracticable.

Investigations also revealed that President Goodluck Jonathan, after receiving the report of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), which was submitted on Jun 7, 2013, might have been persuaded from pleas, especially from the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, not to wield the big stick on the embattled CBN governor.

Information gathered revealed that the advice of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria after its investigation on the CBN’s activities, was clear: for President Jonathan to exercise the powers conferred on him by Section 11(2)(f) of the CBN Act 2007 or invoke Section 11(2)(c) of the said Act "and cause the governor and the deputy governors to cease from holding offices in the CBN".

The council, apart from calling for the prosecution of those found culpable, also recommended to the president to take quick and decisive action, so that the opposition to the "Federal Government does not take advantage of the information and use it to attack the government that Your Excellency was aware of the lax in CBN and allowed it to stay forpolitical reasons".

Jonathan, after receiving the report, according to sources, was prevailed upon by notable Nigerians from acting on it, especially as it would not be practicable to dissolve the CBN at a goal, since Sanusi and all the bank’s deputy governors, including Dr. Sarah Alade, were all indicted.

The fallout of this report, according to a source, was why Jonathan could not pick any of the deputy governors to succeed Sanusi and decided to settle for the Zenith Bank Managing Director, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, as the new governor of CBN.  Sources said Zenith Bank CEO was picked as a result of his outstanding character and disposition to professional ethics, noting that Emefiele appeared highly principled and independent minded, and had not been involved in the banking politics.

It was revealed that the former Chief Exceptive Officer of Access Bank, Aig Imoukuede, who was touted as a possible successor to Sanusi, had never crossed Jonathan’s mind, as Imoukuede had been so much involved in this government and people could misread the appointment as the president trying to position one of his "boys" in a crucial economic institution to do his bidding.

It was also gathered that the Presidency developed cold feet on Imoukuede when it discovered thatdespite his closeness to the key figures of the incumbent Federal Government, he is equally chummy with the suspended CBN governor Sanusi.

It is believed that Sanusi helped to clear regulatory hurdles for him when his bank acquired Intercontinental Bank. That means that Sanusi’s influence could not beruled out after he might have vacated the office. There is also the fear of conflict of interests with Imoukuede’s huge financial interests in Access Bank and other companies in the financial group. Although Sanusi was appointed from his then new post as the Managing Director of First Bank Plc, he did not hold significant position in the share ownership structure of the bank. But Aig-Imoukhuede does in Access Bank. Though he could divest or put his holdings in a blindtrust, it will not completely mitigate suspicion of helping the bank one way or the other.  And finally, the president may haveseen that the Imoukuede may not provide the stability, discipline and maturity needed to redirect the bank after the controversial Sanusi’s tenure. In resorting to Emefiele, the president may have drawn lessons from Sanusi’s tragic flaws, which ultimately brought his tenure to an inglorious end. The suspended governor could be said to be too garrulous for the sensitive post of the CBN governor.

Many Nigerians believed that most of the time, he carried on like a member of civil society organization or even opposition political parties. For the first time, Nigerians behelda CBN governor who would openly criticize various policies of the administration he was serving under. Imoukuede is equally limelight-seeking, even if not as talkative as Sanusi.

30  Forum / The Buzz Central / Tiwa Savage Arrested For Assaulting Policeman on: 17-02-2014 10:42 AM

Mavin Records female artiste, Tiwa Savage, has been arrested by the police for allegedly humiliating a policeman who apprehended her for violating some provisions of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law.

Savage, often referred to as Mavin First Lady, was said to have argued with the policeman, who flagged her down for flouting traffic rules in front of Eko Hotels and Suites Victoria Island, on Saturday.

Savage, who was recently signed a brand ambassador deal with Forte Oil, allegedly came down from  the vehicle she was driving and confronted the policeman.

During the ensuing argument with the cop, Savage, who was said to have been infuriated by the development, allegedly removed the cap of the policeman.

The first African female Pepsi ambassador, was reportedly whisked away to the Victoria Island Police Division for humiliating and assaulting the policeman.

A policeman at the station, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Savage was released shortly after. He said: “Tiwa Savage refused to stop at a traffic light around Adetokunbo Ademola Street near Eko Hotel and Suites. When we attempted to accost her, she refused to park her car as instructed by the policemen."

"Since there was a traffic snarl at the time, a policeman followed her car and insisted that she must stop. After a while, she stopped and started raining abuses on all of us so, we took her to the station."

"On getting to the station,a senior officer advised her to apologise because she was wrong and there were even eye-witnesses at the scene who could testify against her if the matter was taken to court. She apologised and was released immediately"

When contacted, the Group Publicist for Mavin Records, Terfa Tilley-Gyado, confirmed the incident. He said the records label would issue a comprehensive statement stating the position of Tiwa Savage and the group on Monday.

Despite being informed that the story was being prepared for publication against today (Monday), Tilley-Gyado said the official position would not be ready until Monday.

He said: "What would you like to know? We are planning to prepare an official statement; definitely not at this time. The (press) release will be out on Monday for your Tuesday production."
"I don’t think it will be prudent to use the story until you have the official statement. That is just my own opinion. I think you should wait until you get the official statement"

31  Forum / The Buzz Central / Politics Not For The Ungodly– Olusegun Obasanjo on: 17-02-2014 09:12 AM
<p/>Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday, in Abeokuta, condemned politicians who have no fear of God, saying politics is not for the ungodly.

Obasanjo implored those who are God-fearing to go into politics in order to correct the wrongs, asserting that it was fallacy in some quarters that good Christians should not be in politics.

Giving the admonition at a special thanksgiving to mark the fifth anniversary of the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King (CCGC), the religious sector of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State, he appreciated the preacher, Rev. S.T Ola Akande for his sojourn in politics, saying: “One of the beliefs in the so-called Christian quarters is that good Christian should not be in politics but it is a fallacy.“

"If we allow this to be, we shall be having ungodly people and this should not be, because if you leave politics without participating in it, bad people will join and will dominate it. We must encourage good Christians, those God have accepted to be in politics, or else what we would be witnessing will not be good."

Obasanjo recalled that “One of the early things I learnt in politics is that it requires money. Not money for bribing. But it is what is called genuine administration. Some of the people who will come will need money for transportation.“

"When they came to me, I told them that I do not have money. But, they said if I have had money, may be they would not even have come and meet me. I soon realisedhow I will raise money for transportation, so, I started visiting people in the morning and evening and that was how we made it."

”In his sermon, Ola Akande said he has been “a spectator of the many ups and downs of the life of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo across the years”, noting that even as a senior, he came to know a miracle about him and it was that this is a special man that God has given to the current and contemporary Nigerian generation.“

You all know that God has granted him many victories in life. So, the building of such a chapel by him is indeed an expression of praise and thanksgiving to Christ the Glorious King. So, to you, Chief Obasanjo, I say ‘well done! May God continue to grant you more of His grace in Jesus name.”

The cleric condemned the current political situation ahead of the 2015 general elections, observing that “their preparations, defections andcounter defections from one party to another are robbing us of our sleep.“

"We wish you all success in your search for ARGURION, theGreekword for money. I expect that, from now on, many hungry men and women will be trailing you in hope of being fed with your ‘votes for me gift’, after which you will abandon them and start to be taking care of yourselves alone with your constituency allowances,” the cleric said.

34  Forum / The Buzz Central / Pastor Collects Money To Check If Your Name Is In The ‘Book Of Life’ on: 7-02-2014 10:38 PM
image Hmmm... End time!!

Controversial Bishop Thomas Wahome of Helicopter of Christ Church in Nairobi collects money to check if his followers’ names are in the ‘book of life’, Nairobiex has reported.<p/>The website did a short story about him describing the “Man of God” and his church as “just out of this world” and “known to craft very bizarre ways of conning his flock".

In 2012, it was said that the pastor (Wahome) charged his congregation the sum of Sh. 1,200 if they wanted to touch the (hem of his) garment like the lady in Mark 5:21-34 who touched the hem of Jesus’ garment. Bishop Wahome says that people who touched the hem of his garment were instantly healed of whatever ailment it was that troubled them.<p/>Welcome to 2014 – which is probably a Year of Something, at least for each denomination of several churches scattered across the world – and Bishop Wahome is back with a new ‘scheme’. For the (modest?) sum of Sh 1,500, Wahome says, you can now check if your name is in the book of life. Apparently, Wahome says, he has a ‘direct line’ to God and he can communicate with him directly.

In a divorce saga in 2011, a Kenyan website The Star reported that Wahome’s estranged wife Mueni said the bishop whose crusades and Sunday services are aired on TV stations, attends to about 500 people per day and each of them parts with Sh10,000 to see him.

Mueni accused Wahome of spending thousands of shillings on a lavish lifestyle while she and the children were left languishing in poverty.<p/>The wife also added: “Strange women have been calling me and others send me text messages telling me that I am no longer the only bishop’s wife.”<p/>But, Wahome said Mueni has treated him with cruelty causing him psychological trauma and mental anguish. He blamed Mueni for their broken marriage.

image<p/>It was yet another victory for Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as he once more floored arch-rival, Sir Celestine Omehia, this morning at the Nigerian apex court in Abuja.<p/>Omehia, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) during the 2011 governorship election in Rivers State, had approached the Supreme Court, praying it to declare that he has the legal right to <!--more--> appeal the Federal High Court judgment which held that Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s tenure ended on May 29, 2011.<p/>A five-man Supreme Court panel had on November 11 last year adjourned till today for judgment after parties adopted their briefs of arguments in the consolidated appeals that were filed by Governor Amaechi and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Chief Cyprian Chukwu.<p/>Both Ameachi and Chukwu had told the Supreme Court panel headed by Justice M. Muntaka-Coomassie that the Abuja Division of the Appeal Court, erred in law when it granted Omehia the leave to appeal against the High Court judgment, even though he was not a party in the substantive suit that culminated to the appeal.<p/>Tracing the background of the case, the Abuja-based Nigerian Pilot recalled this morning that Chukwu had in 2010 applied to a Federal High Court in Abuja, asking it to interpret the Supreme Court judgment which in 2007 removed Omehia from office and declared Amaechi as the governor of the state.<p/>“He asked the court to determine whether governorship election should be held in Rivers during the general elections of April or later, since Amaechi took the oath of office in October 2007 and not May 29, when all other governors took the oath,” he said, adding:“The High Court held that the Rivers State governorship election should be included in the April 2011 general elections.“<p/>"After the High Court decision, Omehia, who was not a party to the high court proceeding, applied to the Court of Appeal to be allowed to join in the matter as an interested party, contending that he was a party in the apex courtjudgment that was interpreted by the high court."<p/>"Omehia claimed that he would be adversely affected by the Supreme Court judgment billed for today."<p/>However, closing the door on Omehia this morning, the apex court refused to grant his prayers, describing him a s a pretender who wants to eat his cake and have it.

image<p/>Former Manchester City's Mario Balotelli has used his Twitter account to finally admit he is the father of his baby daughter, Pia, after a bitter bust up with his ex-partner.<p/>Balotelli, 23, used his account to write in English: "Finally the TRUTH??…PIA… Sweet child of mine !!! your Dad."<p/>Sources close to Balotelli said the message was in English underlining the fact the baby was conceived in England when he was playing in the Premier League – and also a tribute to his favourite band Guns N’ Roses.<p/>The American rock legends had a hit called Sweet Child O’ Mine in the late 1980s and it reached No.6 in the British charts. <p/>Initially, Balotelli, who now plays for AC Milan, had refused to acknowledge that Pia is his child despite his ex-girlfriend, Italian showgirl Raffaella Fico, 26, confirming he is the father.<p/>The two fought out a bitter and public battle in the Italian media giving interviews with each accusing the other of bad behaviour and cashing in.<p/>In December, Balotelli failed to attend a paternity hearing in Milan regrading the case and Raffaella then launched legal action against his parents after they were dragged into the bitter war of words.<p/>Pia was born in December 2012 and six months earlier she had called Balotelli while he was playing for Italy in the European Championships in Germany to tell him he was to be a father.<p/>At first, he was said to be delighted but then the couple had their falling out and he announced that he would take on his role as ‘father when it’s proved the child is mine’.<p/>She hit back and accused him of being an ‘irresponsible father’ who was shirking on his duties. As a result Balotelli has not even seen Pia yet; after his announcement he is expected to meet her this weekend when AC Milan travel to Naples – where Raffaella lives – for a league match.<p/>She is yet to comment publicly but in another dig aimed at Raffaella, Balotelli posted on his account a few minutes later: "What was the point of all that wasted time telling lies about me on television and in the newspaper? And what did it achieve?"<p/>Raffaella and Balotelli, who left Manchester Cityin January for AC Milan, split in April 2012 after around 18 months together.<p/>They parted after she learned of his womanising ways and she flew to Britain to confront him at his Cheshire home but he refused to see her and police were eventually called.<p/>Balotelli has since found new love with model Fanny Neguesha and has posted pictures of the two of them on his Twitter account as well as one showing ‘his and hers’ football shirts with their names on the back and he has given her a £100,000 diamond engagement ring.<p/>Meanwhile, in recent weeks Balotelli has been linked with a move back to the Premier League with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea said to be interested.

She was declared bankrupt when Smith failed to pay the mortgage and is still waiting for her husband to sign divorce papers, Teesside CrownCourt was told.<p/>The 52-year-old was prosecuted for bigamy after he admitted ‘hastily’ rushing down the aisle with his third wife because he was in love.<p/>The court heard that the day before the wedding Smith signed a petition for divorce from his second wife, which carried a signature purporting to be by Nicolette – but it was faked.<p/>Nicolette admitted she was disappointed that he was given a six-month prison sentence suspended for two years with 150 hours’ unpaid work.<p/>"I feel as though he’s got away with this and has been portrayed as some kind of victim himself after all that he’s put me through. He knew if he responded to my divorce petition, he’d give away where he’d been hiding," she said.<p/>image<p/>Discussing the way he was dumped by his new bride, she told The Sun: "She looked so young in the pictures and he looked a little pathetic. I don’t know what else he could have expected."<p/>Smith claimed he was a wronged victim, duped and abandoned by his latest spouse after he met her in Gambia, married her on November 7, 2012 and brought her to the UK.<p/>Smith married his second wife in December 2005. The marriage broke down two years later. He went missing and his wife's solicitors received no reply in efforts to start divorce proceedings. She then reported him to the police when she found out that he’d remarried.<p/>Smith admitted a charge of bigamy, his first crime but said he had thought he was divorced and that his divorce was ‘automatic’.<p/>Robert Mochrie, defending, said: "This was a man who acted rather hastily. It is, you might think, absurd somebody is getting married on the same day they are handed a divorce certificate. If he’d waited just a few months perhaps, a divorce might well have been finalised," adding that Smith’s motive was love.<p/>"This defendant, born in 1961, was perhaps understandably taken by her and was keen to tie the knot," said Mr. Mochrie.<p/>"He has been wronged. He was abandoned by his third wife. Her intentions were quite clearly to dupe a man of more senior years, as so often happens with men who travel to foreign lands to seek happiness."<p/>Judge Tony Briggs said he had ‘considerable sympathy’ for Smith’s second wife, prevented from divorcing him by his lack of co-operation. He said: "I can well understand her being extremely upset by the thought that you’d married again without the courtesy of going through a divorce with her."<p/>He said he did not know what was in the mind of Smith or his third wife, who has not been traced, adding that people were under a ‘very considerable and serious duty’ to divorce previous spouses before marrying again.<p/>The judge also advised Smith, of Whitwell-on-the-Hill, North Yorkshire, to recognise reality and sort out his divorce.
