My Husband’s Death, El-rufai’s Demolition Forced Me Into Prostitution’

The recent visit of the Global Fund on Fight HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria monitoring team led by Andrew Hurst was to Nigeria gave a detailed insight of the life commercial sex workers.
Behind Mass Park in Zuba, a satellite town in Abuja is Blessing Udeh, easily described as “your everyday type of woman.
There’s nothing in her gait or looks to suggest that she is in what many refer to asthe oldest profession in the world.
Probably in her late 40’s, she’s a widow with three children who seemingly had a good life with her husband until fate played a cruel one on her by snatching him away.
An indigene of Imo State, getting Udeh to talk took someeffort as she fought severally to control her emotions.

She stated: “My husband died and left no money for the family. So, I had to fend for myself by joining the business (prostitution) to keep body andsoul together.”

According to her, she had a fairly good life, as a full time housewife, with her husband who was in solely charge of thefamily’s upkeep until he died.

She also disclosed that it was as a result of the devastating effect of the demolition exercise carried out by the former minister of the Federal Capital, Mallam Nasir el- Rufai that claimed the life of her husband.

“The building my husband built in Karmo was demolished by El-Rufai. This affected my husband so much that he couldn’t rise up financially again after that. It was the effect ofthe demolition that affected him and he died eventually. After his death, my children and I were thrown into abject poverty.
There was no where we could start from and nobody or even relations were willing to help us. It got so bad that my children who had dropped out from school, and I were begging daily for sustenance.”

The mother of three, who claimed to have embraced the profession recently when all else failed, disclosed that life too in the fast lane is not as rosy as she thought.

She said that she makes between N500 and N2, 000 a night which is meagre compared to the amount they pay for lodgings at the brothel.

“We pay N5, 400 for accommodation weekly and I have not even gotten enough to pay this week’s rent,” she said as at the time of conducting this interview.

She, however, appealed to the federal government, well-meaning and wealthy Nigerians to come to her aid.

Mistress Strangles Lover’s 4 Children In Anambra

In what sounds like a movie tale, A woman in Obuno Umuochefu, Igbo-Ukwu in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra state has snuffed life out of four children of her boyfriend by strangling them. Not done with her bestial mission, the suspect sat back at the scene of the crime until her victims’ parents returned, and attacked their mother.

For Mr and Mrs Nwanneka Ogechukwu Okonkwo, both natives of Ekwulumili in Nnewi South Local Government Area but resident in Igbo-Ukwu, January 15, 2013, came like any other day. But the young couple who are each 28 years old, never knew that it was the day their four children, Chukwuebuka, (13), Chukwumelum (6) Obumneme (3) and 15-month-old Chinenyenwa would breathe their last.

The young couple had no premonition of the tragedy that shocked everybody in the community. Their three sons and a daughter were allegedly killed by a lady simply identified as Blessing, from Abakiliki in Ebonyi State. Narrating the tragic incident, the mother of the dead children who spoke with Sunday Sun at Ekwulumili Health Centre where she was recuperating from the shock, said that she was also attacked by the suspect. Mrs Okonkwo said that the eldest of her children, Chukwuebuka, was the first casualty.

According to her, the suspect allegedly hit him on his forehead with a hard object and dumped the lifeless body inside an underground tank in the compound before strangling his siblings one after the other. “I was to go for a burial ceremony with my husband at Ukpor on that fateful day and the children went to school. We initially left with the youngest one, Chinenyenwa but the vehicle we boarded was jam-packed with passengers and the baby started crying. Consequently, my husband said we should disembark and use our motorcycle but people around said the road was too dusty to ride with a baby on a bike.

I decided to go home and wait for our other children who went to school so that they would take care of the baby and enable my husband and I to make the trip with our motorcycle. “But long after school hours, the children didn’t come home. We went to the school and other pupils told us that our children had gone home. I looked for them along the roads they usually take to the house but I did not see them.

Thereafter, I urged my husband to go on his own and look for them, but he returned soon after, saying he had seen them coming home. Before my husband and I left for the burial, I gave them food and told them to go and stay with an old woman in the neighbourhood because we are the only occupants of that building, and I don’t like them staying alone in the compound. “We had stayed barely one hour at the burial ceremony when my husband said we should go home.

But before we left, my husband’s phone rang and I heard him say, ‘I’m in a burial’. So, as we got close to our home, his phone rang again and he told the caller that we were not back yet. I didn’t ask him who the caller was as we rode straight to the house.

“When we got to the elderly neighbour’s house, we were told that she had gone for prayers and that my children were not seen there. We got to the house and I opened the gate from behind believing that the children were inside the house. As we parked our motorcycle inside the compound, my husband pointed to the underground tank that was open. I became apprehensive because we don’t keep it open. But I said maybe the eldest might have drawn water from the well and had forgotten to close it.

I called Ebuka but there was no response. I ran into the sitting room and saw the three younger ones lying on the floor as if they were asleep. I ran out again believing that those three were sleeping. I continued to call Ebuka and looked into the tank and I didn’t see anything. “Later, I decided to wake up Ebuka’s immediate younger brother to ascertain the whereabouts of his brother. I called him but he didn’t wake up; I tried to rouse him but he was motionless and so were the other two. I cried to my husband that the children were dead and I concluded that since the three were dead, Ebuka might be inside the well.

There were marks of human nails on their necks that showed that they were strangled. One of them had faeces in his anus. “It was when my husband started crying and moved towards our bedroom, that the lady (suspect) emerged from the bedroom and asked him why he was shouting. Then, I advanced towards her and demanded from her, where she kept Ebuka’s body because I had seen the others she killed. I held her and she gripped me. When I freed myself from her grip, I rushed to lock one of the two gates and raised the alarm until neighbours came.

“Later, somebody rushed out and called the youths of the community before the local vigilante and policemen arrived. She was arrested along with my husband.” Sources told Sunday Sun that the timely arrival of the police and the local vigilante saved the suspect from being lynched. It was also gathered that Mr Okonkwo, a furniture maker, had been dating the suspect, a relationship his wife confirmed, and had been battling to stop.

When contacted, the couple’s landlord, Mr Sunday, who lives outside the community, described the alleged killing of the innocent children as unfortunate and declined further comment. The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Anambra State, Mr Emeka Chukwuemeka, confirmed the incident and said the matter was being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka, the state capital.

25  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 19-year-old Boy Molested & Robbed In Lagos on: 20-01-2013 11:56 PM
Life has been unfair to me”. This was the statement that greeted this reporter as he approached 19-year-old Chidi Okolie, who is currently going through psychological trauma following an act of gang-molestation on him, Monday, in Badagry area of Lagos.

Chidi, as gathered, left his home town in Izzih local government area of Ebonyi state for Lagos, two years ago, in search of greener pasture, following the demise of his parents. The death of his parents, reportedly forced him to drop out of school.

But determined to irk a living, he decided to come to Lagos, where he started hawking along the Mile two- Badagry expressway.

Along the line, he came across a middle-aged man who promised to offer him employment, an offer Chidi saw as a way out of struggle.

But he got the shock of his life , on his supposed first day at work, as he was allegedly gang-Molested and robbed by his supposed ‘messiah’.
MD Abubakar, Police IG

Hear him, “ I saw Okafor Emmanuel as my messiah when he promised to secure a job for me. I had barely finished selling on Monday when he called me on phone to come down to Abule-Ado. I bought a sachet of pure water, washed by face and straightened my clothes. I packed the remaining wares into a bag and kept it, hoping to finish them the next day.

When I got to the designated place, I met Okafor with four other young men. He told me to accompany them to distribute cigarets to his customers in Badagry, informing that, that was my first assignment. We did that until 11pm and because it was late, he asked me to pass the night with him.

Gang -Molested at midnight
But at midnight, someone tapped me on the thigh and when I opened my eyes, it was Okafor. Lo and behold, he was in his Unclad! He bent over and said he would want to have carnal knowledge of me. I was shocked and concluded he could be drunk.

I lied to him that I wanted to urinate and left the room . But on getting to the sitting room, I met the other four men stack Unclad as well. At that point , I concluded the job offer was a mere trick to harm me.

At that point, I decided to run outside . But as I attempted to, they overpowered me and tore my shirts into shreds before pinning me to the ground with each having his way in turns.

As if that was not enough, they pushed me out of the apartment that midnight, boasting that there was nothing I could do. When I checked my pocket, I discovered they had collected the N25,000 I made from my sales.

But I could not go back to my uncle’s place that night so as not to be mistaken for a thief. All I did was to collect a shirt I saw on the line and wore. I remained there until 6am before leaving.

Since the incident, he has been begging for forgiveness, attributing it to the handiwork of the devil, without bothering to find out if I was hurt.

As I speak, I am still hurting all over but I can not go to the hospital because I do not have money to buy drugs. I really do not know how to get money to start business all over again. As it is now, he has rendered me handicapped. You see why I said life has been unfair to me? He asked.

So far, Chidi did not report the incident to the Police as he claimed he was afraid he might not get justice at the end. He also feared that Okafor and his friends might carry out a severe deal against him, if he did.

Cure for HIV/AIDS: UNIBEN denounces Prof Ibeh’s claim
---—AS controversy continues to trail the alleged discovery of a drug for the cure of HIV/AIDS by the Dean of School of Basic Medical Sciences of the University of Benin, Prof. Isaiah Ibeh, the authorities of the institution, yesterday, in Benin, faulted the dean’s claims.

Prof. Ibeh had, in a recent interview, hinted of the discovery of an oral drug made from plants extraction in Nigeria for the possible cure of the pandemic HIV/AIDS.

Reacting to Prof. Ibeh’s claim during an interaction with newsmen who were at the university to authenticate the alleged discovery, Provost, College of Medical Sciences of the University, Prof. Vincent Iyawe, said the institution was not in agreement with Prof. Ibeh’s claim for now, alleging that the University was, “not carried along” in the research.

He said: “The School would like to take credit for a break- through, but it cannot align with the breakthrough because the College was not consulted, the University was not consulted, and he did not carry anybody along.

“There are protocols and procedures. Going from stage to stage, we ought to give it clinical trials, by taking it to the Federal Ministry of Health to do clinical trials and many other things involved. We also needed to take it to National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, and many other things had to be done before you come out with your claims, in addition to taking it to World Health Organisation.”

He said all the university was doing was to protect Prof. Ibeh and the integrity of the institution.

Again l think Prof didn't trust his colleagues. Probably he thought they ll outsmart him and go public b4 him or the authority may claim ownership of the discovery. Well l am just thinking of the likely reason while Prof lbeh chose to go it alone. Abi na lbo man.

Nigeria recorded 300,000 new cases in 2012., even as the country was ranked as number eight among 12 countries in the world that have recorded a decline in the new Human Immuno-deficiency Virus, HIV, infection rate.

However,Benue state still leads other states in the federation in HIV prevalence with a prevalence rate of 10.7 percent, while Kebbi state, with 1.0% recorded the least prevalence rate in the country.

Benue

State is closely followed by Akwa Ibom with 10 percent,BayelsaState; 9.1 percent and Anambra, 8.1 percent.

InKadunawhich recorded 5.1 percent from seven percent in 2008, Governor Patrick Yakowa promised to ensure zero prevalence in the years to come, as according to him, government would do everything within its power to educate the people and provide drugs for HIV/AIDS patients..

Statistics released by the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research at a programme to mark this year’s World AIDS Day yesterday in Lagosshowed that Nigeriaand 11 other countries recorded 20 percent reduction in new infection rate between 2001 and 2011.
OFFICIALS of the Anambra State AIDS Control Agency, ANSACA, expressed worry over the 8.7% HIV/AIDS prevalence rate in the state which ranks it fourth in the country, saying that serious measures were being adopted to reduce the scourge.

TheBayelsaStategovernment has reaffirmed its commitment to the wellbeing of people living with HIV/AIDS, according to Governor Seriake dickson who spoke at a charity football match between the Creek Haven Young Stars and Creek Haven All Stars to mark the 2012 World HIV/AIDS Day at the Government House, Yenagoa.

dickson said government has approved stipends for patients  through the State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS,  BYSACA.

Sharp decline in the number of people being infected with HIV since 2001 have occurred in the Caribbean (42 percent)and sub-SaharanAfrica(25percent). But the prevalence increased in the Middle East and North Africa, while nine percent was recorded inEast Asia.

However, there are no decline in HIV related death rates both inNigeriaandAfrica. According to the statistics, in 2008, the annual death rate inNigeriawas 192,000 but has risen to 217,148 deaths which may not be unconnected to lack of access to treatment. Out of 1.5 million Nigerians confirmed to be HIV positive, only 500,000 have access to antiretroviral drugs, which is key to managing the disease according to the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, Director- General, Prof John Idoko.

Reeling out these statistics in Review of the National Response to HIV& AIDS”, the Dr. Oliver Ezechi, Clinical Sciences Division, NIMR, explained that the global theme for this year is “Getting to Zero AIDS Related Deaths” while the national theme is “Resourcing the National Response towards getting to the zero related AIDS deaths”

Speaking in another forum to mark the Day inLagos, Director/Head, Clinical Services Department,Institute of Human VirologyNigeria, Dr Ernest  Ekong stressed that there is need for all to be committed to achieving zero new infections, zero discrimination against people living with HIV and zero AIDS related deaths.

Ekong  further noted that : “Sub-Saharan Africa remains most severely affected, with nearly 1 in every 20s(4.9 percent)  living with HIV and accounting for 69 percent of the people living with HIV worldwide. Although the regional prevalence of HIV infection is nearly 25 times higher in Sub-Saharan Africa than in Asia, almost 5 million people are living with HIV in South-South-East andEast Asiacombined.

“After Sub –Saharan Africa, the regions most heavily affected are the Caribbean and Eastern Europe andCentral Asia, where 1.0 percent of adults where living with HIV in 2011.”

Ekong noted that it is a critical issue that although approximately 1,555,780 People Living with HIV (PLHIV) require anti-retroviral drugs, about one third of the group are currently on treatment.”The gender dynamics in the profile of infections and the growing burden of the 2.2 million HIV orphans inNigeriahas made it necessary for the revised policy to critically address the rising HIV prevalence among women, the expansion in number of orphans and  vulnerable  children.

Other critical issues which the revised policy should also address,  Ekong further stated include the stigmatization of PLHIV and violation of their rights as well as their roles and responsibilities, the differences in communication messages  on abstinence, condom use etc in post-primary educational institutions, and “the issues associated with increased access to treatment and care,” he said.Ojukwu’s Will read, Bianca highly favoured

Man forces wife to drink petrol, sets her ablaze ‘…No, she killed herself’

From: OKEY SAMPSON, Aba

Pandemonium broke out in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State at the weekend when a man set his wife ablaze for complaining to her sister-in-law on phone about the husband’s alleged maltreatment . The suspect later reported himself to the police. The man, whose name was given as Ndubuisi Okafor, a trailer driver, who hails from Amawbia, Awka in Anambra State, had allegedly been having quarrels with the wife for sometime now.

Okafor, who owns two trailers, was reported to have severally accused her wife of being too religious which he claimed, prevented him from making good money. He was alleged to have even destroyed the wife’s Bible. A source revealed that two days to the incident, the woman, Chinyere, 40, who hailed from Obingwu Asa in Ukwa West Local Government of Abia State, had complained to the husband that she was sick and needed initially money to buy some drugs, which the husband refused.

This prompted Chinyere to call her sister-in-law on phone to complain about it and other related issues which did not go down well with the man. Okafor, according to the source, later gave the wife money for the drugs and travelled to Port Harcourt. When Okafor came back from his journey the following day he met his wife cooking and went inside the kitchen to confront her over the phone call to his sister. The man did not accept his wife’s explanations. He allegedly pounced on his wife, who had three boys for him and attacked her.

After beating the wife to stupor, Okafor allegedly forced her to drink some litres of fuel, poured some on her body before dumping his wife, into a big rubber container before setting her ablaze. Neighbours who were attracted to the apartment by the woman’s cry for help broke into their flat, put out the fire before rushing the lady to hospital. The first hospital she was taken to rejected her due to the high degree of burns she sustained.

But it was at the Living Word Mission Hospital where she was admitted and given first aid treatment and referred to UNTH, Enugu. It was on their way to UNTH at Osisioma, about two kilometres from the hospital, the woman died. Four hospitals allegedly rejected the body being deposited at their mortuary because it was badly damaged. When Okafor learnt the wife had died, he reported himself to the Timber Police Station where he reportedly told the police it was his wife that set herself ablaze. Relations of the deceased are alleging that the man killed their sister for rituals.

According to the woman’s elder sister, Nkechinyere Nwogu, “before the incident, Okafor had severally told my sister he needed money at all costs and that the wife had been the stumbling block, and he even destroyed her Bible. “Presently, we the family members don’t know where the body of my sister is because four hospitals rejected her body to be deposited in their mortuary due to its very bad state.”

When our correspondent visited 45 Azubuike Street by Uratta /Express junction residence of the couple, the building was deserted by their neighbours over fear of massive arrest by the police. As at Press time, the suspect was still being detained at the Timber Police Station.

Kidnappers in the university town of Nsukka in Enugu state seem not in a hurry to dump their filthy lucre despite the efforts of the state Police Command to run them out of town. Apparently calling the bluff of law enforcement agents and playing the lords of the town and its environs, the hoodlums have formed an association.

The body known as Association of Kidnappers of Nsukka (AKN) made its debut in the town recently. Checks by Sunday Sun reporter revealed that although it operates in secrecy, the group has started pasting notices on building walls ordering residents to pay huge ransoms or get ready to be attacked.

A resident, Ekene Ugwu, said they pasted one of such notices in the neighbourhood around Ibagwa road and people were panicky. He said that some residents including lawyers in the area have notified the police and taken precautionary security measures. But the Enugu State police command has told residents to go about their daily businesses as the police were handling the situation.

The police spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu told Sunday Sun on phone that the police had picked the telephone numbers dropped by the author of the letters in various homes, for further investigation. Meanwhile, five persons suspected to be the masterminds of kidnappings in Nsukka zone have been arrested. They were identified as Obinna Nnonyelum a.k.a Biggy, Ikechukwu Jude Ezeah alias Alhaji, Jonas Eke, Kelechi Udagha and Ifeanyi Hyginus Ede. The first suspect, Obinna was allleged to have told his police interrogators that he hails from Amawbia in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State and that his first criminal outing was the kidnap of a woman from Obollo Afor

. Though he said he could not remember the date of the kidnap, the suspect allegedly told the police that he and those he identified as Sky B who was their driver, Gago, Alhaji and Jonas alias Pajoe, took part in the crime. He said that the N1.5 million paid as ransom was collected at Umuokpu Awka in Anambra state and that he made the phone calls and gave directives until it was collected. Obinna was also said to have confessed that the gang kidnapped Rev. Fr. Chijioke Amoke, a Catholic priest in Nsukka Diocese and a herbalist, Rowland Iyida alias Ojenamuo on November 2, 2011. The herbalist and a police corporal, Sunday Elisha, attached to Ogrute police station, later died while the kidnappers were escaping with their victims. Police sources told Sunday Sun that the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Rich robbers, kidnap kingpins
 are biggest investors in Anambra.
Build expensive homes, hotels with ill-gotten wealth •Their native doctors, armoury

From EMMANUEL UZOR, Onitsha

In Anambra state, kidnappers could be ranked among the biggest investors and employers of labour through their filthy lucre of abducting fellow human beings and demanding ransom for their release.

Through the illegal business and the huge profit, kidnappers in the state have devised a means of investing the money they get from ransom collected from relatives of their victims, in hotel business and other profitable business ventures.

Checks by Sunday Sun revealed that though the kidnappers are aware that their activities in many states attract capital punishment upon conviction, they are unrelenting due to the quick wealth and consequent affluence.

However, the police, other security agencies as well as the state government are not relenting in their efforts to flush out the criminals.

But as the fight against kidnappers continues, it has become obvious that the hoodlums have turned big time investors in various businesses with the usually heavy gains from their satanic acts.

Recently, some of the suspected kidnappers arrested in various parts of the state by the state Special Anti- Robbery Squad, (SARS) led by Mr. James Nwafor, allegedly made startling confessions about their huge financial muzzles.

It was gathered that during interrogation, some of them and their kingpins told policemen that their illegal business has made them as rich as Alhaji Aliko Dangote, reputed as the country’s richest man.

The suspects said they invested the money they received from ransom wisely in various profitable businesses and made sure they live in affluence and glamour as ‘big boys’.

According to a community leader in Oraifite who pleaded anonymity, “the suspects lived in affluence and glamour and paraded themselves as one of the richest people in the community with the large followers who are mainly youths”.

Sunday Sun further gathered that while some of the kidnappers wasted their money on frivolities and expensive life, some of them including the kingpins built expensive houses and hotels scattered all over the state and its environs.

Though the state governor, Mr. Peter Obi has clamped on some of the arrested kidnappers and demolished their homes built with ransom money, there are indications that many of such investments in cities across the country have not been discovered.

Suspects and their investments

Mr. Olisa Ifedika alias Ofeakwu who hails from Oraifite in Ekwusigo local government area of Anambra state allegedly made a confessional statement as the leader of one of the most dreaded kidnap gangs which led to the arrest of his partners and the discovery of their expensive homes.

He had completed his ultra-modern bungalow and almost completed the second two- storey building that he wanted to use as a hotel located near the main road in his community.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Balla Nasarawa said: “A hotel built by Ofeakwu at Ezumeri-Oraifite was nearing completion which has been located. The building was erected with ransom collected from their victims.”

According to the Police boss, the kidnap kingpin made confessional statement that led to the discovery of the house built by another dangerous kidnap kingpin, Okechukwu Amasiatu alias Okey Nnewi.

“One of the confessions was that one Okechukwu Amasiatu alias Okey Nnewi is the second most dangerous kidnapper to Olisa Ifedika. The investigations by the police led to the discovery of his residence located almost opposite Ezinifite Police Division in Nnewi South council area of the state.

“A magnificent bungalow of eight bedrooms built with ransom money collected from victims of kidnap was within a compound that belongs to his father. Okey Nnewi is still at large but efforts have been intensified to arrest him.

“He also gave another stunning revelation that their second armory is located at Uli. The confession led to the recovery of another catchments of arms and ammunition buried inside plastic containers by one Emeka Ezekude”, he said.

Emeka Ezekude

He hails from Uli in Ihiala council area of Anambra state and another “dangerous” kidnap suspect detained at the SARS office, Awkuzu in connection with high profile kidnap cases and robberies in various parts of the state.

Mr. Nasarawa told Sunday Sun that, “the said Emeka Ezekude was subsequently arrested and he confessed to the crime. Emeka Ezekude just like Okey Nnewi, also built two magnificent bungalows for himself and his mother. The buildings were built with ransom collected from victims of kidnap.”

Emeka Ibesi

He was arrested on September 12, 2012, in connection with the murder of two vigilantes. The Ak47 rifle used to kill the security men was recovered and he allegedly confessed to the crime. The police said that the suspect also confessed that his gang was responsible for most of the robberies and kidnappings at Nkpor, Umuoji, Ojoto, Agulu and its environs.”

The Commissioner said: “The suspect further mentioned one Omeregbema as their gang leader and stated that their victims were kept in a storey building built by their leader who is still at large, at Igbokwu community in Anyamelum council area of the state.

“The leader of this dreaded kidnap/armed robbery gang is reported to be a native doctor, and responsible for making charms and arming the suspects with charms to protect them from police bullets. He built a story building with the ransom collected from victims.”

However, Governor Peter Obi swung into action by demolishing some of the buildings that belong to the kidnap suspects in various communities including Oraifite, Uli, Agukwu Nri and other parts of the state.

Governor Obi said the action was to discourage youths who see the ill-gotten wealth of the kidnappers as proof of success and let them know that the government would not tolerate anyone found guilty of aiding and abetting kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.

Two nabbed in Abuja for drug trafficking.

Two suspects, Emeka Ibeh and Chinedu Onwurah, were recently apprehended at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, with 6.435kg of narcotics. Both suspects were arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

NDLEA Abuja Airport Commander, Hamisu Lawan, confirming the arrests, said 32-year-old Ibeh was caught with 5.200kg of substances found to be methamphetamine hidden inside his luggage, while Onwurah, also of the same age, had ingested 1.235kg of substances that tested positive to cocaine.

The suspects, regretting their actions, told CRIME DIGEST how the search for greener pastures led them into drug trafficking. Ibeh reportedly left Nigeria in 2005 after his secondary education to Guinea Bissau and returned to Nigeria last January after a fruitless search for fortune.

The Anambra State native said, “When I left the country in 2005, I thought everything would be rosy. Unfortunately, this was never the case. I suffered hardship until my return to the country in January this. I now live in Lagos where I sell ladies’ clothes to earn a living. It was in Lagos that I met an old friend I knew in Guinea Bissau.

“He told me he was now an importer. During our discussion, he promised to make me one of his managers, managing his business in India. The agreement was for me to take a bag to India for $2,500 with all expenses paid. I was on my first trip when the methamphetamine was discovered in the bag he gave me.”

Onwurah, on his own part, ended up in an Algerian border detention facility while trying to cross into Europe.

He said, “I wanted to go to Europe in search of better job opportunities. Unfortunately for me, I was detained at the border detention facility in Algeria. I could not regain my freedom; I was totally at the mercy of the officials and had to rely on them for water and food.

“I remained there until a Nigerian man came and assisted me to regain my freedom. He bought me a plane ticket back to Nigeria; I was so grateful that I felt I owed him my life. When he asked me to smuggle drugs to enable him raise enough capital for me to settle down, I was glad to accept his offer. I did not even negotiate with him because of what he had done for me.”

Chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, urged members of the public to be self-driven and identify opportunities in their environment.

He said, “I want membtrafficking.”ers of the public to support the campaign against drug trafficking. The story of these drug suspects is very sad. It is a warning that people should look before they leap. There are numerous opportunities in this country and I urge members of the public to shun drug
