103  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Boko Haram threatens Cameroon over Nigeria on: 16-02-2014 02:02 PM
Violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, has threatened to declare war on Cameroon if she does not cease to support Nigeria’s military campaign against it.

In recent times, the sect has been at the receiving end of a massive onslaught by the army in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

Members of the sect have reportedly fled these attacks and were said to have relocated to safe havens in Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

However, efforts by the sect to make Cameroon a safe haven have been countered by Cameroonian troops who launch regular attacks against the fleeing militants.

Camer.be, a Cameroonian daily, says the leader of the sect, Imam Ibn Muhammad Abubakar, wrote to President Paul Biya recently to complain about the attacks. According to the paper, Abubakar threatened to unleash terror on the country should it continue to lend support to the Federal Government’s military campaign.

In the letter, Boko Haram, which has renewed its attacks on villages and cities in the north eastern part of Nigeria, said it had no problems with Cameroon. But it added that the situation could change soon as the Central African country was interfering in matters that did not concern it. The newspaper reports in French but its story was translated by one of our correspondents.

“Boko Haram is ready to start a war with Cameroon and all those around the world trying to oppose it,” the paper quoted the letter as saying. The letter was written in Hausa, the language that Boko Haram has been using to communicate with journalists. It is widely spoken in some parts of Cameroon.

The letter reportedly came a day after newspapers in Cameroon reported a bloody clash between members of the sect and the Nigerian Army at Limani, a Cameroonian city.

During the clash, Cameroon deployed troops comprising soldiers from her 32nd Motorised Infantry Battalion, the country’s police and gendarmes to assist Nigerian soldiers.

The newspaper reports that the Boko Haram leader expressed displeasure with the deployment of the Cameroonian soldiers especially.

According to the newspaper, about 400 members of the sect were involved in the clash which witnessed massive exchange of fire and air attacks, leaving the city damaged.

In the past few weeks, there have been joint operations launched against Boko Haram insurgents by Nigerian and Cameroonian troops, in the border villages that link the two countries.

The paper reports that over 30 Cameroonians and Nigerians were wounded while five were killed in a joint operation during January attacks. But it did not state the number of militants killed. It also reports that many people have fled these areas especially the border village of Amchide.

Similarly, on January 15, Nigerian soldiers engaged the sect at Djakana in Cameroon.

The newspaper claims that President Goodluck Jonathan and President Biya held a secret meeting on January 27 to discuss the Boko Haram menace.

“The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who was in Yaounde following the drama in Limani, wanted to get his counterpart (Biya) to give him the rights to pursue Boko Haram to Cameroon.

“Sources added that Jonathan may come to Etoudi (a Cameroonian city) for an agreement allowing the Nigerian Army to cross the boundaries of the border in Cameroon where Boko Haram members flee to.

“No one can yet say that the Nigerian President got what he wanted as negotiations were confidential.”

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said although he was not aware of Boko Haram’s threat to Cameroon, terrorism was not restricted to Nigeria.

The presidential spokesman stated that countries were collaborating at the level of the African Union Security Council and the Gulf of Guinea Commission, among others.

He said, “Terrorism is of concern to the entire region and all countries in the region are collaborating to tackle it. They work together to check piracy and the proliferation of small arms.

“Terrorism is not restricted to one country, it is a global issue and that is why countries are collaborating.

“Nigeria is working with Cameroon and other neighbouring countries. Many of these issues are handled at the level of the African Union Security Council, the Gulf of Guinea Commission and so on.”

Abati also denied knowledge of any recent meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and President Paul Biya of Cameroon on the matter.

“To the best of my knowledge, the last time the two Presidents met was when we went for the Gulf of Guinea Conference last year. It was about regional security,” he said.

When one of our correspondents contacted the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen Chris Olukolade, he said only the Presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs could comment on the nation’s relationship with her neighbours.

He said, “Operationally, Nigerian security forces are doing their best and we are conducting the operation that we believe will secure the country and its people and this effort will continue; it will be enhanced by all means.”

On Friday, the Cameroonian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Salaheddene A. Ibrahim, told SUNDAY PUNCH  he needed time to respond to the issue due to its nature.

Cameroonian Defence Minister, Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o, had in January said troops had been deployed to fight Boko Haram members and to make their escape almost impossible.

Recently, Cameroon reportedly recruited 6,850 people into her national defence forces, including 2,000 for the Presidential Guards, 2,750 for the Armed Forces (Air, Land and Sea) and 1,100 for the National Police.  Nigeria and Cameroon signed an agreement on the establishment of transborder security committee on February 28, 2012 in a bid to combat increasing criminal activities at the common borders and to encourage peaceful coexistence.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru on April 5, 2013 inaugurated the Nigeria Trans-border Security Committee to work towards the establishment of Nigeria-Cameroon joint transborder security committee.

A top diplomat at the ministry said, “The committee was mandated to develop practical strategies and measures to strengthen cooperation in the areas of security between Nigeria and Cameroon.

“The committee headed by Major General Babatunde Samuel (retd.) has submitted its report to the ministry and it has been submitted to the President for further action.”
104  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Patience Jonathan flown abroad for treatment on: 16-02-2014 01:52 PM
Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience Jonathan, may have embarked on another medical trip to Germany.

A report by an online news portal, Sahara Reporters, on Saturday quoted two presidential sources as saying the First Lady was flown out of the country discreetly.

One source, the medium claimed, disclosed that Mrs. Jonathan had kept a low profile several weeks before her movement to a German hospital.

“She has not been in good health for a while now,” a source close to the Jonathan family reportedly said.

After a medical trip in 2013, which her spokesman denied, Patience later returned to the country to admit that she went to a German hospital for treatment.

The agency also quoted another source as saying, “Nigerians are paying for her treatment and deserve the courtesy of being informed about her movement.”

The Presidency, however, denied the report.

The First Lady’s spokesman, Mrs. Ayotunde Adesugba, told SUNDAY PUNCH on the telephone that there was no truth in the report.

Adesugba said she left the President’s wife in the Presidential Villa a few minutes before speaking with our correspondent at around 9pm on Saturday.

“There is no truth in the report. I just left her in the office now,” she said.

Mrs. Jonathan had on Wednesday played host to the Chief Executive Officer of Water and Sanitation for Africa, Mr. Idrissa Doucoure, who sought her support on ways to improve sanitation on the continent on behalf of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation.

She received the guest at the conference hall of her office inside the State House.

Before receiving the UN delegation on Wednesday, she had also played host to some women from one of the South-South states earlier in the week.

Also, the President’s wife accompanied her husband to the inauguration of the Wuye Ultra-Modern Market, in Wuye District of the Federal Capital Territory penultimate Thursday.
105  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Russian satellite set to hit earth TODAY poses 'very real danger', experts warn on: 16-02-2014 12:49 PM
The Kosmos-1220 was launched by Russia in 1980 and classified as defunct the same year
Russian officials have warned it will re-enter the earth's atmosphere on Sunday February 16
It's descent is not controlled, so it can potentially land anywhere, experts say
It is expected to land in the Pacific Ocean

Space experts have warned there is a 'very real danger' associated with a Russian satellite that is due to come crashing back down to earth on Sunday.
Portions of the now-defunct Kosmos-1220 satellite will survive the high-speed re-entry to the planet and make a fiery, uncontrolled descent through the Earth's atmosphere, Russian officials have confirmed.
Of the utmost concern however is the location where the fragments will land, which remains unknown.
'As of February 7, 2014 the fragments are expected to fall on February 16,' Colonel Alexei Zolotukhin told Russian news agency Ria Novosti.

'The exact impact time and location of the fragments from the Kosmos-1220 satellite may change due to external factors.'
The satellite is expected to land somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, which would pose no threat.
However according to Fox News, it could potentially fall anywhere on earth.
In 1978, a different decommissioned Kosmos satellite crashed into an unoccupied part of Canada, spreading radioactive debris and leading to a lengthy clean-up.

Then in 2009, a third Kosmos satellite crashed at over 26,000 miles per hour with a U.S. Iridium telecommunications satellite, sending thousands of bits of space junk into orbit.
Most recently the European Space Agency's GOCE satellite managed to harmlessly crash into the ocean in November 2013.
The exact size and weight of the Kosmos-1220 satellite is unknown, Ria Novosti reported, adding to the uncertainty of the upcoming event.

'Much of it will burn up in Earth’s atmosphere, but no doubt fragments of Kosmos-1220 will reach Earth,' David Eicher, editor of Astronomy magazine, told Fox News.
'What we have going for us is that most of the planet is covered with water, and highly populated areas are in the minority of our planet’s surface area.
'So it is unlikely that satellite debris will cause injuries or major damage. Still, with such a reentry, we are playing the odds.
'This is a very real danger, given that a decaying orbit will carry this satellite down onto the planet.'
As of October 2013, more than 800 floating bits of space debris posed a potential threat to the International Space Station, according to NASA.
Of these, 10 percent were spacecraft, either functional or non-operational, a third were rocket bodies, and the remainder were miscellaneous debris, the Orbital Debris Program Office noted in a recent newsletter.

106  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / SCIENCE: Being Gay Is A Matter Of Your DNA, Not Choice on: 16-02-2014 12:30 PM
United States' researchers indicate that homosegxwality might be a matter of biology rather than choice, as some genes were linked to men being attracted to other men. Chicago University researchers analysed the DNA of 400 pairs of gay brothers and revealed two pieces of DNA that seem to be linked to homosegxwality. Dr Michael Bailey from Northwestern University in Illinois says that segxwal orientation "has nothing to do with choice," as findings suggest there may be genes at play. Qazi Rahman, a psychologist at King's College London, said the results were valuable for further understanding the biology of segxwal orientation. Other studies suggest that conditions in the mother's womb also influence segxwal orientation. For instance, the more older male siblings a man has, the greater chance he will be gay. The phenomenon cannot be explained by the youngest boy being babied or other differences in the way they are brought up. It is thought that carrying a male baby in the womb triggers an immune response in the mother, creating antibodies that attack part of the unborn child's brain linked to segxwal orientation. However, the latest findings also raise the prospect of a genetic test that could be used by insurance companies to discriminate against clients or by pregnant women to abort gay babies. 107  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How I Discovered Many Years Later That My Wife’s Boss Is Father Of 'Our' Son'' on: 16-02-2014 11:00 AM
Nigeria; A man in Ekiti who is seeking the end of his 25-year-old marriage has revealed how he discovered that he was not father of his wife’s 4th child. 57-year-old Isaac Jemibola has petitioned a Customary court sitting in the Ikole area of the state to dissolve his marriage to 48-year-old Olayemi due to adultery on her part. According to Mr. Jemibola, his wife confessed to the illicit affair which took place in 2002 and further told him that the fourth child wasn’t his but was instead fathered by her former boss. "She confessed to have had an extramarital affair with her former boss which resulted in the pregnancy of the fourth child. My wife said she had given her life to Christ and that her desire to make heaven made her confess based on the advice from her pastor. She added that the paternity of the fourth child was in doubt since both the boss and I slept with her the same week," he said. Jemibola further told the court that he reported the matter to his parents who pleaded with the woman to reverse her confession. "She however insisted that she was following the dictates of the Bible. I purposely don’t want to do the DNA test because I don’t want to hate the child." he said. Olayemi admitted committing the offence, but kicked against dissolution of the marriage. "I did it because Jemibola was befriending another woman during the period which made him abandon me for almost six months. It was that same period that my former boss, who normally took me to work in his car, made love advances at me. Both men made love with me at almost the same period. After some years, I discovered that the child looked quite different from his siblings and out of guilt, I decided to tell him the truth. “I pleaded for his forgiveness but he refused," Olayemi said. In her ruling, the court president, Mrs Yemisi Ojo, adjourned the hearing to April 7.

110  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How NSCDC arrested teenager for molesting four children in Ebonyi on: 13-02-2014 05:55 AM
THIS is an incident that shouldn’t have happened, a tale that mustn’t be told, and a situation that a moral mind cannot fathom, yet, it was allegedly perpetuated by one Chibuike Maduka, 17, at Ndibe in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
crexThis revelation was made possible through the arrest of the suspect by men of the State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, on Monday  February 10, 2014. The suspect was alleged to have raped four children and his biological mother, Mrs. Idam Augustina Josephine.
The NSCDC in Ebonyi State on Tuesday, paraded the serial rapist and homosegxwal who allegedly derives fun in molesting young children of different parents in his community.
The suspect who blamed his strange segxwal escapades on his mother, confessed to have had segxwal intercourse with her (mother) on several occasions. He claimed that  he doesn’t know what usually induces him to have sex with children in the area.
Parading the suspect at the Command’s headquarters in Abakaliki, the State Commandant of NSCDC, Mrs. Ego Echendu stated that the suspect was rounded off after a tip- off by an informant in the area. She explained  that the suspect had in confessional statement disclosed that he had segxwal intercourse with his own mother on several occasions.
”We got a tip off from our informant and sent some of our men to follow up the information concerning an adolescent male who has been
in the business of molesting children in their tender age.
That kind of act baffled me and so we continued to monitor the suspect and fortunately at about 3pm yesterday, our divisional office at Afikpo North Local Government Area were able to round off the suspect and the victims, and their parents; and also the suspect’s parent who we reliably gathered was  also a key player in the son’s segxwal escapades.
”The suspect confessed to have been having segxwal intercourse with his biological mother and we asked to know when it started and he said in 2013. He also claimed that the mother usually encourages him to sleep with children of such tender age. ”Because this case involves women and children of these age bracket, we want to transfer this case to the Ministry of Women Affairs in the State for them to take it from there.
He sleeps with his own biological mother who is in our custody right now; and again he also told us that he is a homosegxwal.
He sleeps with other male friends. From my own personal analysis, I think he has some  brain disorder”. Vanguard Metro, VM gathered that the suspect who hailed from Amangu village in Nkpohoro Community in Afikpo North LGA began molesting young children since 2008. He is a Senior Secondary School, SSS, 1 student with Oziza Secondary School in Afikpo North Local Government Area of the State.
According to the suspect, “I’m here because of my mother; she used me for ritual. I don’t know what I’m doing. If I see a little child I will rape her; this act started in 2008; it is not my fault but that of my mother. I have raped my mother and four children.
My father is late. I don’t know myself again. I had homosegxwal activities with one Emmanuel three times at Amangu in Afikpo North local government area“ Reacting, the mother of the suspect, Mrs. Idam Augustina Josephine, 45, denied having any segxwal involvement with his son insisting that he doesn’t know what was happening to his son.
”I am 45 years and the mother of Chibuike Maduka; how can I teach my child to rape little children? I’m here because my son raped some children; he is telling a lie, he never had any segxwal relationship with me”.
One of the mothers of the victim (names withheld) who regretted the development said medical examination had been carried out on her daughter after she discovered some strange reactions from the victim’s private parts.
According her, the daughter had contacted segxwally transmitted disease from the suspect. She said: “I am not happy with this act exhibited by this boy; I usually drop my child at school and then go to work; I really don’t know how it all happened.”

111  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Oil theft, govt spending, greatest challenges to economy – Sanusi on: 13-02-2014 05:49 AM
CENTRAL Bank of Nigeria, CBN governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has identified oil theft and increasing government spending as the greatest challenges facing the Nigerian economy.
He stated this while delivering a keynote address at the Udo Udoma and Bello Osagie 30th anniversary lecture in Lagos.
He said that the situation where some people successfully steal crude oil, refine and ship outside the country, and the fact that government spending is on a continuous upward trend, will continue to make it impossible for the economy to move at the desired rate.
“We have a problem that is entirely home grown. Oil theft, increase in government spending are greatest challenges of the economy. And people who are investing in our markets are watching and when there is little panic, the economy may collapse. So we cannot take the stability that we currently have for granted. We should stop oil theft, leakage and build our reserves,” he said.
The CBN governor, who used the opportunity to recount the efforts the apex bank has made under his leadership, noted that the bank’s monetary policies have made tremendous impacts on the exchange rates, especially in defence of the nation’s currency.
According to him, “The CBN is not looking for strong or weak naira. We are instead, looking for a stable currency. This is because we understand how a weak currency impacts the lives of ordinary Nigerians. Our biggest problem remains the threat to the exchange rate, because we should be resisting appreciation and not fighting depreciation as currently is the reality.”
Sanusi, who disclosed that the cost of managing the currency has dropped from N39 billion in 2009 to N34 billion in 2013, lamented the acute inefficiency in the value chain and explained that Nigeria needs to improve on that to drive the economy and make the banking industry lend more to the sector.
“We have moved agriculture lending from 0 to 4 percent in two years and today, Nigerian banks have up to N500 billion in agriculture. This is because we can abuse the banks from now till tomorrow or employ all sorts of tricks to get the banks to lend to agriculture and they will not. So sometime ago, we invited Standard Chartered from Kenya and Standard Bank from South Africa to come and explain to us how their banks are lending to the agriculture sector and they said that the whole issue revolves around value chain, which is actually the answer to the problem of the entire economy.
112  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Mob hacks suspected thieves, sets car ablaze on: 13-02-2014 05:44 AM
Three suspected criminals, who allegedly specialised in snatching bags from women in Calabar, Cross River State, were on Tuesday hacked with machetes almost to the point of death by residents of the area.

The suspected criminals were trailed by eyewitnesses after they had allegedly succeeded in snatching the bag of an unidentified woman who had just come out from a bank in the area.

The Volkswagen Vento salon car which was allegedly used for the operation was also set ablaze by the angry mob.

An eyewitness and a newspaper vendor, identified simply as Asuquo, said the thieves snatched the bag containing an unspecified sum of money from the woman who stepped out of First Bank premises along Calabar Road and sped off.

He explained that unknown to the suspects, another unidentified lady had driven behind them in company with others after she spotted what had happened. They intercepted the Volkswagen car at Goldie/Atu junction where an angry mob later took over.

Asuquo said, “They snatched a bag from the woman on Calabar Road and drove through Target down to Goldie here, where they  were accosted by the mob. A lady who saw them when the thieves snatched the bag raised the alarm as she was driving and those people joined her in the chase.

“When the men got to Goldie by Atu roundabout, they attempted to make a U-turn, but about three cars blocked them from all sides.”

Asuquo explained further that when the suspected thieves saw that they had been trapped, they wound up the side glasses of the vehicle and remained inside.

“It was at that point that the lady in the first car came out of her car and raised the alarm, which attracted more people. Instantly, the thieves’ car glasses were broken and they were dragged out of the car. From nowhere, people brought out machetes.”

He said the suspected thieves were inflicted with cuts before the arrival of policemen from the Atakpa Police Division, who rescued and took the suspects to the station.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Hogan Bassey, said, “The boys are with us and are being given medical attention. They will appear in court after investigations are completed.”

Meanwhile, two robbers operating in a commercial tricycle around the Anantigha area of Calabar were killed on Monday, while their tricycle was set ablaze. Another suspected criminal was almost lynched along Uwanse Street, but was rescued by the police who whisked him away.

A resident of Uwanse, Mr. Akpan Udo-Ekpo, told PUNCH Metro that  residents of Calabar metropolis decided to confront criminals as the police appeared powerless to combat crime in the area.

Udo-Ekpo said before now, they used to apprehend criminals and hand them over to the police, only for them to be released later.

Another resident of Uwanse, Mr. Moses Etim, said the residents decided to form vigilance groups to tackle the increasing crime rate in the city.

He said the level of insecurity in the area was frightening, adding, “that is why we decided to protect ourselves from these criminals.
113  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 11 others dump APC, join PDP on: 13-02-2014 05:34 AM
Governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Kwara State during the 2011 general elections and now a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dele Belgore, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Belgore moved into the PDP fold on Wednesday alongside other chieftains of the APC such as Iyiola Oyedepo, Bunmi Olusona, Idris Mahmoud, Sa’ad Omoiya, A. Isa Afon, Agboola Ismail, Toyin Ayinla, Funsho Sa’ad, Atanda Soro, Khadijat Abdullateef, and Ganiyu Onikere at his campaign office in Ilorin where they addressed their supporters.
The defecting politicians had about two months ago expressed their disenchantment with the plan by the national leadership of the APC to hand over structure of the party to former state Governor, Bukola Saraki, who himself has just dumped the PDP to join the APC.
Belgore and his associates had warned that they would not accept the handing over of party structure to Saraki because it would defeat the struggle they were leading on the platform of APC for a change from the oppression which, they claimed, Saraki’s group had subjected the people of the state to.
Belgore, who was the first runner-up in the 2011 governorship election, while announcing their defection to the PDP, said they took the decision after the APC national leadership failed to heed their warning and instead handed over the structure of the party to Saraki.
The politician, who said he and others laboured hard to nurture APC to a party of choice in the state from its ACN days, regretted that the APC national leadership let them down with the decision to allow Saraki the control of the structure of the party in the state.
“Hope had risen that with the birth of APC, our struggle for socioeconomic development of our dear state which we began in 2010, would be better served under a stronger and broader political platform.”
“But that hope suddenly evaporated very quickly. An alliance of those who yearn for change and development and those who desire to maintain the status quo of oppression and denial of opportunity was suddenly foisted upon us.”
“By that alliance, the politics of patronage, of denial of merit-based opportunity, of running the state like personal assets, of deploying public wealth for the benefit of a select few, of selling the state assets to shadowy private concerns was given a new life.”
“But it is not just about pitching of the voices for change against the forces of retrogression. It was also about the manner in which it was done.”
“We said yes, anyone could be admitted to the party, but we insisted that it would be UNDEMOCRATIC, inequitable and even contrary to the very idea of change that APC claims it stands for, to automatically hand over the party structures to new entrants, especially when those entrants are at the commanding heart of the oppression and arrested development of Kwara and its people.
“Not only does this arrangement confer the party structure on these new entrants, it is pre-determined to ensure that they continue, no matter the pretence of internal election, to control it.
“Thus by this ultimately self-defeating arrangement, APC had determined the scores of the game even before kickoff. The same ugly trend occurred in Kano, Sokoto and some other states.”
“APC’s leadership had in seeking to satisfy a few, alienated the rank and file, and to many, the soul of the party.
“The owner of a home needs not be displaced to give any false sense of friendship to a stranger.
“Our people do not believe that people are made for a platform. Rather they believe that platforms are made for the people.
“No positive change is possible where we are to coexist with the same elements that the people of Kwara want to dislodge.
“To our supporters and political independents, APC has let us down. We have therefore decided not to be part of an arrangement that puts us in the same ship driven by the oppressors.
“We are therefore joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which – as fate now has it – has shed the very core of the liabilities that made our people run away from it,” Belgore said.”
He added that he and his group are joining hands with other like minds in the PDP “who were unjustly shut out because of their progressive bent to endear the party to the people of Kwara State”.”
“Together we will work to advocate and bring about economic liberation, equal opportunity for all and positive development to our dear state and its people.
“We join forces to break the shackles of oppression and restore our state back to is former glory.
“It is never easy to leave a party that one has nurtured to such an enviable position, but the reality is that APC by its undemocratic stance and scant regard for the yearnings of the people and supporters has strayed from the path of progress and development – that is the core of our political existence in Kwara.
“We remain true to this cause and its sanctity limits our affiliations.
“My supporters and I therefore call on all those who wish Kwara State well, both within and beyond Kwara, indigenes and non-indigenes, to support us in the PDP to fight this just and noble cause so as to bring a brighter day to the lives of our people and to renew their positive aspirations,” Belgore said.
114  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 7 burnt to death in Ekiti petrol tanker crash on: 13-02-2014 05:31 AM
At least seven persons were burnt to death at Aramoko Ekiti in Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Tuesday evening, when a petrol tanker lost control and hit other vehicles.
We reliably gathered that the explosion from the tanker caused a stampede, as people scampered for safety to forestall being caught in the inferno that emitted a thick smoke.
According to an eye witness, the incident happened at about 5.35 pm, when the tanker, which lost control shortly after descending a hill, swerved off the road while negotiating a sharp bend and rolled towards two buildings.
The source further revealed that the resultant fire consumed the buildings, while it also spread to surrounding ones and lock‑up shops.
It was gathered that the victims included one Mr Ololade, a retired head teacher, two other occupants of the affected buildings, two persons of northern extraction and two people inside the truck.
The driver of the tanker, who is now being detained at Aramoko Divisional Police Division and one other occupant, were said have been lucky as they escaped with injuries.
The corpses of the victims had been deposited at the morgue of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.
The Ekiti State deputy governor, Prof. Modupe Adelabu, who visited the scene at about 9 a.m. yesterday, lamented that the recklessness of some truck drivers had resulted in untimely death of innocent Nigerians.
She said: “This road belongs to the Federal Government, but I want to assure that the state government will do something about it within the next two weeks. This death is painful and we have to do something quickly to avert re-occurence.”
115  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Desperado:Man arrested for breaking a window to spy on his NAK'ED neighbour on: 11-02-2014 08:39 PM
A man in Lagos has been arrested by police in the state after reports that he spied on his neighbour while she was ba'thing.

38-year-old Gbenga Olajiga is said to have broken his neighbour’s window so he could see her while she was nak'ed.

The accused was charged for the crime before a Tinubu Magistrate court in the state.

The Eagle Online reports:

Olajiga is facing a two-count charge of malicious damage and possession of Indian hemp.

The Prosecutor, Corporal Francesca Okere, told the court that the accused committed the offence on February 8 at about 11pm at Lagasa Street, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. Okere alleged that the accused claimed that he fell in love with his neighbour, who is a married woman.

She said: “On the said day, the complainant was taking her bath and the accused could not hold the temptation anymore. “He took a bamboo stick and broke the window to catch a better view of her.

“Upon his arrest, the accused was also found to be in possession of a substance suspected to be Indian hemp.” Okere said that the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 348 and 327 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Following the plea, the Magistrate, Mrs A.T. Omoyele, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50,000, with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case till March 3 for mention.
116  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Female Corper Detained For Flogging Disobidient Student Who Later Died on: 10-02-2014 08:21 PM
According to Crime Reports, the female corper disciplined about six students, among whom was one Esther Oyeleke, a 14-year-old girl in JSS1. The corper reportedly gave the six students two strokes of cane each on January 24 for playing during teaching period and for not responding when she asked their colleagues to call them.
Surprisingly, the parents of the girl brought her back to the school on January 27 and said the hand on which she was beaten was swollen. With the belief that two strokes of cane could not cause such an injury, the parents were advised to take the girl to the hospital for medical treatment.
From a swollen hand, the girl’s condition deteriorated so much that by January 30, her entire body became swollen, according to information gathered by Crime Reports, and it was then she was taken to one Osoko Maternity Hospital where she was confirmed dead.
Her death reportedly led to a mini protest as the girl’s relations went to the school to disrupt academic activities. When the case was reported at Moniya Division, it was immediately transferred to the State CID for investigations.
In an interview with Crime Reports, the youth corps member, an indigene of a town in Oke Ogun area of Oyo State and a 2012 graduate of a polytechnic, said she believed she was not responsible for the girl’s death and should not be made to suffer unjustly. According to the Office Technology and Management graduate:
“I am one of the corpers deployed to Akingbile Oluana Memorial School, Moniya. I was teaching JSS1 students Basic Science.
On January 24, the students went to play outside the class and I told some of their colleagues to go and call them so that I could mark the attendance for the day. I could not speak loud then because I lost my voice. Some of them responded to my call while others did not. Because of this, I gave the disobedient ones two strokes of cane each on their palms in the classroom.
On January 27, one of them, a female, was brought to the school and I was told that her hand was swollen. I said it could not be because of the caning, as there was even no mark on her palm. As her teacher, I asked her colleagues whether they knew her residence so that I could go and greet her but they said they did not.
On January 30, the principal called me and said that she learnt that the entire body of the girl was swollen. Her family was said to have brought some people who disrupted the activities of the school. The principal said she enquired whether she had been taken to the hospital but the family members replied in the negative. She asked that she should be taken to the hospital.
I was at a meeting of youth corps members when I was called that we should go and pay the girl a visit in the hospital. By the time we got to the hospital, one of the teachers came to me and said she learnt that the student was dead.
On January 1, I went to our coordinator at the local government council before going to the state council of the NYSC to report what happened. I was brought to the State CID by the coordinators and I have been in detention since then.
I am surprised because she was not the only that I gave two strokes of cane. What I know is that whatever is hidden from man is clear before God Almighty. I believe that it was not the strokes of cane that caused the girl’s death. I know I have done nothing wrong and it would not be good to make an innocent person suffer unjustly.”
The police spokesperson in Oyo State, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor confirmed the story, when contacted, stating that detectives were still investigating the story. She said that the corpse of the deceased girl had been deposited at the State Hospital, Adeoyo, Ibadan for autopsy.
117  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Jonathan’s Chief of Staff, Oghiadohme resigns on: 10-02-2014 07:44 PM
The shoddy handling of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s trip to Sokoto, weekend, where he received former Governor of the State, Attahiru Bafarawa into the Peoples Democratic Party may have been final straw that broke the camel’s back for the former Chief of Staff to President Jonathan, Mike Oghiadohme.
But the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati who confirmed Oghiadohme’s resignation said it was to enable him seek higher political office within the Peoples Democratic Party.
He also debunked an online  media report that the former Chief of Staff was sacked because of his involvement in an alleged fraud at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC.
We gathered that though the President had been inundated with series of allegations against the former Chief of Staff, the Sokoto incidence was the  last the President could take.
A source at the Villa told Media that the Chief of Staff failed to inform the Governor of Sokoto State, Magatakarda Wammako of the President’s visit to Sokoto as protocol demands. Instead, he was said to have informed the Deputy Governor, Muktar Shagari who unlike the Governor refused to decamp to the opposition All Progressives Congress.
Despite not formally informed by the President’s Visit, Governor Wammako allegedly directed that every thing must be put in place to ensure that the President’s visit was successful.
The President was  however, received at the Airport by the Deputy Governor, Mukthar Shagari, though the Governor was in town.
President Jonathan was said to have been angry that at a time everything was being done to woo some of the aggrieved governors who left the PDP back to the Party, deliberate obstacles are being created by some of his close aides.
More Details later.

119  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Student arraigned for beating up policeman on: 10-02-2014 06:49 PM
The police on Monday in Abuja arraigned a 22-year-old student, Ibrahim Salisu, in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court for beating up a policeman.
Salisu, who lives at 4, Olumo Rock, Amasco Plantation Estate, Galadimawa in Abuja, is charged with joint criminal force and assaulting a public servant.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Anigbo Paul, told the court that Cpl. Chijioke Jacob of the Lugbe Police Station had lodged a report against the accused at the station.
He said the report was lodged on Feb. 9 at about 9 p.m.
Paul told the court that, on the said day, the accused had gone to the complainant’s house as he was about to park his car and beat him up.
The prosecutor said the accused and three others now at large beat the complainant while he was dressed in uniform and started trying to take his rifle from him.
He told the court further that, during investigation, Salisu confessed to committing the offence.
Paul said Salisu’s action was in contravention of the provisions of sections 79 and 267 of the Penal Code.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused, if convicted, is liable to three years’ imprisonment or an option of paying a fine or both.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
After arraignment, the accused’s counsel, Mr Ikechukwu Nnaemeka, applied to the court for bail according to Section 341 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).
The prosecutor objected and prayed the court not to grant the accused bail.
The Senior Magistrate, Mr Celestine Odo, in his ruling however said the prosecutor failed to show the court how granting the accused bail would jeopardise ongoing investigation.
Odo also admonished Salisu’s counsel for failing to state the contents of the section he cited in his argument, saying “a lawyer should be prepared before coming to court’’.
He then granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000.
The magistrate also said this must be with a surety in like sum, who must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court and must be a public servant.
Odo said the surety should present his or her office identity card and appointment letter.
He then adjourned the matter to March 3 for hearing.(NAN)

Henry Okah, sentenced in South Africa to 24 years on terrorism charges, has been caught in a failed jail break attempt, prison authorities said Monday.
“I can confirm that Okah is one of the five inmates that attempted to escape and whose efforts were foiled,” Manelisi Wolela, spokesman for South Africa’s department of correctional services, told AFP.

He did not give details of the attempted escape from Leeukop prison in northern Johannesburg that is said to have taken place in January.
Okah was convicted last year and sentenced on 13 counts of terrorism, including twin bombings that killed 12 people in the Nigerian capital Abuja as the country celebrated the 50th anniversary of its independence in 2010.
He was arrested, tried and convicted in South Africa where he has permanent residency.
The department said most of the offenders involved in the botched bid to escape are serving life sentences for serious offences including murder, kidnapping and robbery.
Correctional services officials said security at the prison, which recorded 11 attempted jail breaks in the 12 months until March last year, had been tightened.
