25  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Unsuspecting nurses are left ‘off their faces’ after a pensioner accidentally gave them a cake laced on: 6-07-2019 10:36 AM
Nurses were left 'off their faces' when a patient's elderly relative accidentally gave them a cake laced with cannabis as a 'thank you', a hospital worker has revealed.

Police were called to Warrington Hospital on Monday May 27 after staff ate the red velvet cake and were reportedly left feeling 'relaxed' by the drugs it was spiked with.

The grandfather wanted to show appreciation for the care nurses provided to his family member, but brought in a cake from his grandson's 18th birthday - unaware of it's illicit ingredient.Hospital officials admitted one member of staff had tried the cake but 'did not experience any effects'.

However a member of staff, who asked not to be identified, claimed that 'three or four' nurses ate the cake and were left 'off their faces' and 'relaxed' by it.

The member of staff said: 'They were eating the cake and then the next minute the staff were all off their faces.

'It was brought in by a nice old man as a thank you, but it was full of funny stuff and had them all relaxed.

'There was no impact on the patients whatsoever, but they all knew something was wrong, so the police were called in.'

Cheshire Police tested the cake and confirmed it contained cannabis, making it what's known as a 'space cake'.

The man was unaware of the added ingredient contained within his grandson's 18th birthday cake. He took some of the left over cake to the hospital to share with the nurses.

A mother-of-one who tried to frame her neighbour by claiming he was holding a machete to her throat forgot to hang up a 999 call before saying: 'I'm blagging it — this will get him nicked.'

Emma Ravenscroft, 26, said Daniel Hall was threatening her with a large blade during a confrontation in the street in Handforth, near Wilmslow, Cheshire.

During the hoax call — that triggered a response by armed police — Ravenscroft, who had been locked in a feud with Mr Hall, told a call handler: 'He's running around with a machete and I'm now hiding in the car with my boyfriend.

'He's got a big machete in his hand and he just tried to get me with it — he held it against my throat.'

She made the call after she found someone had used bleach to write the word 'slag' on to the bonnet of her car.

Armed police were scrambled to the scene but realised it was a hoax when Ravenscroft failed to end the 999 call and was overheard telling her boyfriend: 'I've said Dan came out with a machete but I'm blagging it.

Nick Kyrgios confessed he was aiming to hit Rafael Nadal with the ball during their second round match - before he shrugged off his defeat with a night out in the pub.

The 24-year-old Australian refused to apologise for deliberately thrashing a forehand directly at his opponent in their ill-tempered grudge match at Wimbledon yesterday.

The tennis badboy admitted he was 'going for him' and told a press conference after his four set defeat: 'I wanted to hit him square in the chest.'

He said: 'I don't care. Why would I apologise? I mean, the dude has got how many slams, how much money in the bank account?

'I think he can take a ball to the chest. I'm not going to apologise to him at all.'

His confession has sparked an angry backlash on social media, with fans calling for the 'spoiled brat' to be fined or 'banned' from the sport.

Hours later he was back at the pub for a second night in a row, filming himself on Instagram singing along to music while relaxing with friends at a private event.

A mother who beat her seven-month-old daughter to death after spending years trying to conceive through IVF faces jail after being convicted of manslaughter.

Shalina Padmanabha, 33, abused her baby daughter for the last three months of her life after she spent the first four months in hospital.

Inner London Crown Court heard how Padmanabha and her husband had spent years trying to conceive before their daughter was born in February 2017.

She was born premature with a hole in her head and required multiple operations before she was allowed home to Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

It was there she suffered 'catastrophic' head injuries, either inflicted by her mother hitting her or bashing her head against a hard surface, the court was told.

She wept in the dock as she was today cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter and cruelty against someone under the age of 16.

A cure for baldness may be on the horizon using human stem cells to grow an 'unlimited' amount natural-looking hair.

The breakthrough findings were shared at the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) conference on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Scientists from Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute have created hair follicles that grow through the skin using human induced pluripotent stem cells on mice – which could eventually be used to resolve baldness in humans.

The stunning findings received a Merit Award at the conference and Stemson Therapeutics has licensed the technology, according to Eureka Alert.
A potential cure for baldness was presented at the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) conference on Thursday in Los Angeles where scientists were able to grow hair on hairless rats using human stem cells. In trials scientists grafted human stem cells on mice cells and attached them to tiny scaffolds to control the direct of hair growth and help them integrate into the skin. Those scaffolds were then placed under the skin of mice and hair emerged through it.

Now scientists hope to apply the same process on humans.

'Our new protocol described today overcomes key technological challenges that kept our discovery from real-world use,' Dr Alexey Terskikh, an associate professor at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in La Jolla, California said Thursday.

A self-confessed nagging wife was arrested and locked in a cell for 17 hours after being accused of controlling behaviour because she asked her gym-obsessed husband for more help around the house.

Valerie Sanders, 58, said that she begged her bodybuilder husband Michael, also 58, to clean the patio doors, hoover their home and workout less as well as stop shopping at Aldi or Lidl.

She also claims that he took steroids - killing their sex life - and couldn't bear to touch his muscly body saying: 'It was like cuddling an ironing board'.

Mrs Sanders, from Catterick, North Yorkshire, was arrested and ended up facing charges of controlling behaviour - but her case was thrown out on Tuesday.

The case was meant to begin at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday but was thrown out before a jury was selected, with Mrs Sanders' not guilty plea being accepted in exchange for a two-year restraining order.

The mother-of-two called the charges 'outrageous' and said that she was 'treated like a criminal' for asking her husband to do his bit around the house.

She said: 'These laws were brought in to help protect vulnerable people who are suffering in relationships - not to prosecute nagging wives. It's outrageous this ever got to court'.

A California college student has died after she was viciously attacked by three sharks while swimming in the Bahamas on Wednesday.

Jordan Lindsey, 21, of Torrance, California was snorkeling near Rose Island in the North Atlantic Ocean waters around 2pm when she was attacked.

She had traveled to the island with her family on a tour boat that brought visitors to the island for snorkeling and to see wild pigs when the sharks appeared.

She suffered devastating injuries in the attack where her right arm was torn off and she suffered bites to her left arm, both legs and buttocks.

The last fatal shark attack in the Bahamas was in 2010 - a global hotspot for sharks - with investigators stating three sharks were involved in killing Lindsey.

Lindsey's parents said they saw the sharks approaching and yelled to warn her but she didn't hear them in time.

She was rushed to the shore and taken to Doctor's Hospital in Nassau, where she was pronounced dead, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said Wednesday.

37  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / We want Christian Lagos governor in 2015 — Cleric on: 9-06-2013 05:35 PM
The Director of Civic and Political Affairs of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland of the Anglican Communion, Venerable Folarin Shobo, has urged Lagos residents to vote in a Christian as governor of the state in 2015.

In a statement on Friday, Shobo said Lagos residents could not afford to continue with the present political arrangement whereby political officers were largely people of a particular faith.

While noting that Governor Raji Fashola has done well in improving on the infrastructure of the state, he said, “It is time for power to shift in the state. It is time for us to have people who will continue to rule with the fear of God and respect for the rule of law.

“There is a strong need for genuine internal democracy among the parties that will produce a credible candidate come 2015.”

Shobo urged Christians in the state to show interest in partisan politics, saying Christians who have a flair for politics should get ready for the 2015 elections.

He however noted that getting political power was not a do-or-die affair, but that Christians need to change the political status quo in the state.

He said, “It is not fair to have a government that is largely tilted to people of a particular religion. Christians over the years have been magnanimous enough. We have worked for people who are not of our faith and we have supported them to be in government. It is now time for us to come out and take the bull by the horns.

“The battle for Lagos State will not come easy. It will take patience, perseverance and strong will. It will take fasting and praying and it will take the readiness of men and women who have interest in politics.”

Shobo argued that politics and religion go hand in hand and called on church leaders to begin to sensitise their members to take up the gauntlet and vie for political positions in the state.

He said it was unfortunate that none of the five people being tipped to succeed Governor Babatunde Fashola is a Christian.

“Asking for a Christian governor in Lagos State at this time is not out of place. It is long overdue and it is time we began to do something about it,” he said.

A bride refused to show up at her wedding at the Cathedral Church of Emmanuel, Okesa, Ado-Ekiti, on Saturday resulting in the cancellation of the wedding.

Our correspondent learnt that the groom, who is from Ifaki-Ekiti in Ido-Osi Local Government Area of the state, was already in the church but waited in vain for the arrival of his bride.

Her whereabouts were unknown hours after the service had started.

The failure of the bride to show up, it was gathered, forced the clerics to cancel the wedding and invited guests reportedly left one after the other, when it dawned on them that the ceremony would no longer hold.

The Dean of the Cathedral, Very Reverend, F.O Bankole, when contacted on the telephone confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He said, “It is true that a wedding which was planned to hold in the church today was cancelled. The bride did not show up.”

Bankole said he did not know why the bride failed to showed up, but added that the couple had been “having some issues since they started courting.”

A Professor in the Department of Microbiology, University of Ilorin, Poju Akinyanju, tells  MOTUNRAYO JOEL, the challenges confronting science education in Nigeria

President Goodluck Jonathan has said Nigeria needs more universities. What is your stance on the issue of establishing more institutions?

The question is more basic than this. We should first of all ask ourselves if Nigeria has universities. What we call universities, to be frank, are not universities. There is very little research going on in our universities and there are not enough facilities in our institutions. It is easy to bring students together and graduate them after four years. But the students will leave with a wishy-washy training because the teaching facilities and research work are not there.

I am speaking largely for science-based disciplines. We need more facilities in our institutions. So, what we should be asking ourselves is if our universities should be called universities in the first place. We should think about this before going ahead to establish more universities.

In the area of science, is Nigeria closing the gap?

We are not even close to where the world is in science. In the last 15 years, I have taught in about three universities and on the average, we line up about 20 students to a microscope. There is very little that can be done with in such a situation. For example, microbiology in our institutions is at the molecular biology phase. I am not aware of any functional molecular biology laboratory in Nigeria and if there are, they must be every few, or largely dysfunctional. The truth is that you need to be on ground, doing your own part of the research in order to compete with the outside world. Facilities such as microscopes and spectro-photo meters are not available. These facilities are necessary.

The Federal Government often says it funds public tertiary institutions adequately. Do you agree with this?

It is a little bit of both, the universities and the federal government are at fault. I will explain why. For example, there is no sufficient money for universities to run a proper molecular biology laboratory. To run this type of laboratory, you will need about N20m. This is not a lot of money when one considers the amount of money people play around with in Nigeria. There is no university that can actually devote that amount of money to molecular biology and the FG is also not releasing that kind of money.

And it is also true that the money given to universities are not being properly utilised. Often, most universities focus on meeting up with the requirements of the National Universities Commission institutional accreditation. These also include having good buildings, good lawns and flowers. But very few Nigerian universities focus on putting money into laboratories to enhance teaching. There are universities who claim to be top of the range and still teach with chalkboards. Some of them do not even have Internet facilities. In them, students sit on top of each other because the lecture hall is choked.

At the end of the day, it is a mixture of both. The FG is not disbursing enough money into the universities and the universities themselves are not allocating money properly. Instead of funding laboratories, they would rather sponsor students abroad and they will spend about N10m on each of them. Meanwhile, they can use the money to train the students in Nigeria.

Why do you think science graduates complain of their inability to get jobs?

Clearly, there are not enough jobs for any discipline, not to talk of science-trained graduates. Professionals such as accountants, bookkeepers and economists tend to get jobs faster, but overall, there is the problem of unemployment in the country. The issue of unemployment is however worse for  science graduates. We say graduates should be self-employed and focus on entrepreneurship. But where are the facilities to train these students for them to be self- employed?

For example, since laboratories are unavailable, how do I teach students about how to grow mushrooms? This is a multibillion-naira business. Also, there are not enough industries to absorb these science graduates that universities are producing. However, there is also the problem of ill-trained graduates. So, the few industries that are available will prefer to look for graduates that are trained outside the country.

Universities are their own problems. University managers need to be re-orientated on how to effectively run them. They need to learn to this. Universities are places of ideas; places where theories are challenged. They are places of experimentation and of democracy. So, it is more than just pumping money into them.

Why do you think emphasis is more on certificates rather than experience?

These two terms should not be a basis for comparison; somebody must be certified to be capable somewhere. Experience is linked to certificate. If the training is proper, it will not be difficult to garner experience. People must be trained. We may say that not everyone should go to the university, but people must be trained and when they are trained, they must get certificates. If people enroll in universities with the aim of just getting certificates and you train and nurture them properly, they will have both the certificate and experience. So, there should not be a comparison between certificate and experience. People need to be educated and when they are educated, they should be certified. Captains of industries are complaining that they are spending too much money retraining graduates. They are right because we ought to have trained them to a certain level before we push them out.

Why are graduates not being trained to a level where industries would not need to complain about them?

There are no facilities, there is shortage of staff and staff experience is low. Sad to say, but we are in a circle where these ill-trained graduates return to the university to lecture and you cannot give what you do not have. It is a difficult thing. Once you lack the required facilities or proper environment to train, there is no way graduates will be distinct. There are graduates in some ministries who cannot think on their feet. This is because they have not been trained. In the past, students used to organise symposiums and lectures. But now, it takes about a year before a student can organise any of such. It is a general decay. What we have today is garbage in, garbage out. If you don’t train graduates, there is no way they will fit into the society.

What is your view on the belief that Nigeria has abundant resources but lacks the capacity to develop them?

It has actually been settled a long time ago that what is most important is the human factor. So, despite Nigeria’s vast resources, if you do not train human beings to explore them, the raw materials will lie fallow and others will make use of them. For example, how much of oil have we been able to explore ourselves? Our agricultural products are there lying waste. I believe we need the right research and technology. For instance, China has been able to develop its human capital to effectively manage its raw materials. It is what the humans do to the raw materials that matters. Raw materials cannot turn into products on their own. Without human beings, raw materials are just a waste. It is the human factor that is most important.

What are the pitfalls in the education system?

Lack of facilities, poorly motivated lecturers and unqualified members of staff including problematic environment. The environment for learning is not conducive. However, the external factor, which is the government, is to blame. We have no vision for the education sector. Our leaders do not have a vision of what education should do for the nation. They think universities should just be there to keep children so they would not be nuisances.

In the final analysis, the problem is that education is now a political process. Politicians have not re-orientated themselves to believe that education is important and foundational to the development of a nation. With this, nothing will change. The problem with education has become a national issue. Now, our children in universities are not interested in thinking or debating. They are more interested in being assistants to politicians to make money. So, the entire problem in the nation is affecting the system. Unless the nation changes, you cannot resolve the problem.

What do you think the future holds for science in Nigeria?

In the next 15 to 20 years, with the way things are now, we may not have gone far. For example, if you want to start training people in molecular biology, you will need to build laboratories, and create revenue for them.  Science in particular is endangered in Nigeria and until we take the right approach to it, we won’t solve other problems.

I did but the winning factor for me was the close relationship I had with God and my family.  I did not shut my loved ones out of my life. They are the ones who can tell me the truth about anything, no matter how big it is. I have a good relationship with my parents and I talk to them about everything. My mother, especially, was a pillar of strength for me and I was able to tell her a lot of things and she helped me through all the changes. I am a very spiritual being and I pray a lot.

How did you handle the superstar treatment in school?

The early stages of the job were very harsh on me. I had friends who just had issues with my person, not necessarily because I did anything wrong but because they felt that I was going around with a larger than life image. I do not think that was the situation but because I am out there, everybody wants to judge me based on what they don’t even know.  I thank God for my parents and my siblings who helped and supported me all the way. I made very good friends also. Now, I am a graduate. I have friends who I hook up with once in a while and we hang out and attend functions together.

What has changed about your career now as an adult?

The difference is not so significant because I will always do indigenous songs. It is a language which I am able to express myself in. But I am going to do a lot of English songs as well because I know my fan base extends to people who do not understand Edo songs. There are some foreigners too. Recently, I checked our facebook page and saw a lot of foreigners posting comments there.

What lessons have you learnt as an adult?

I have learnt about growth. As a young lady, boys will seek one’s attention but one should learn to have a great relationship with guys while setting boundaries with them at the same time. Your parents should always be people you respect, no matter how big you are and how much money you make. You would always need parental love and support. Mine have been there for me all the time. Sometimes, when the youthful exuberance in me crops up, my parents would always make sure that I stay grounded. They always remind me of where I am coming from, where I am going and what I have done. That has kept me balanced. Guys would come and go but your parents would always be there.

What has been happening to your music career?

I am working on a couple of singles and a talk show but while I am still waiting for all of that, I am having as much fun as I can have.

What about marketing your songs?

I don’t think I can handle that but I have put friends and family members in place to assist me, they are also learning in the process. My sister is my personal assistant and my mother works with the board of my management and that helps a lot. It is easier to communicate with family. Whenever outsiders are brought in, they are made to understand that I am more of a family girl and we always like to do things together. This helps us to be focused. I don’t allow business to becloud what I do. Most importantly, I am a gospel artiste and my job is to win souls for Christ. If money comes, it will help facilitate what I do well but it should not be the basis for doing what I do.

Are you limiting yourself to gospel?

I do inspirational songs. Whenever I go for concerts and they tell me they have a mixed crowd and would like me to mix songs that are not purely gospel, I would get songs like Whitney Houston’s Greatest Love of All, Mariah Carey’s Hero. These are songs that inspire and motivate. The most important thing is that you pass a positive message across to people.

What does style mean to you?

It is what I am comfortable in. Anything is suitable for me but I just like to look my age, I don’t like to dress older than my age.

How old are you now?

I am in my 20s.  I am sure you know that women have an issue with revealing their age. I am enjoying my 20s.

What are your favourite accessories?

I love rings a lot. They are very fashionable to wear. I like wearing them until the real ring comes.

When?

Very soon. You should get an invitation when the time comes.

Is the man also a musician?

No.

What does he do?

What is your favourite food?

It is amala, I like eating it with ewedu and turkey soup. It is my favourite and I have also learnt to prepare it.

What is a typical day like for you?

I wake up, pray and blog, but I have not blogged for a long time now because I have been investing money in a song we are working on. Sometimes, I rehearse. I am learning to play the guitar and I check how far I have gone in perfecting my guitar playing skills.  Then, I go on social network to see what impact my project is making in the lives of people.  I also try to answer as many messages as possible.  I do house chores. My parents don’t let me go out without doing my portion of the house chores. I clean my room and wash the plates. I have to do all the things that I should do in the house because I will become a wife some day.

How do you handle pressure?

There is no particular way of handling pressure but when I am pressurised, I pray.

What is your advice to young girls, who see you as a role model?

Pray and continually follow your dreams. Be sure it is what God wants for you, then pursue it wholeheartedly. Let God be the winning factor in your life. Also, make sure you have a great family who supports what you do. Remain steadfast; start and follow through with the project or you will fail.

Have you ever had sad moments in life?

When there are challenging moments, I always look at the positive side.
