The renowned human rights lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, has been released by his abductors.
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Folusho Adebanjo, on September 12, 2013, Thursday, confirmed this information.

Kidnappers in Edo State struck in the afternoon of August 23, 2013, in the southern part of Edo state, seizing the lawyer and the chieftain of All Progressives Congress, Mr. Athanasius Ugbome. Mr. Ugbome has been released on September 8, 2013, Sunday, after his family paid ransom.

Ozekhome's release was also expected on the following day, however,negotiations with the kidnappers have failed.

The Nigerian Senate will not reconsider its ban on same sex marriage, Senate President Senator David Mark has said. He told a conference of Catholic Bishops that the Senate would not bow to pressure from international pressure groups to re-think its position, saying same-sex marriage was against the laws of Nigeria.

Mark further told the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria(CBCN) Tuesday in Otukpo, Benue state, that same sex was alien to “our tradition and indeed offensive to humanity.”

A statement Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Paul Mumeh, said the Senate President appealed to the bishops to use prayer as a means of containing the numerous socio- political and economic challenges confronting the nation.

He quoted Mark as saying,” The Church should continue to use her weapons of prayer and fasting ; divine and human resources to actualize transformation both in our hearts and our society . Nigeria needs moral and spiritual revolution. And this is the time “.

The Senate President, according to the statement, noted that the present challenges and expectations were high, but promised to “do our best to live up to the challenges”.
Mumeh said, “Senator Mark canvassed that every thing humanly possible should be done within the ambits of the Law to nurture our democracy in order to yield the needed dividend for the citizenry.
“He cautioned against yielding to the pressures of unpatriotic bodies who are determined to destroy the peace and unity of Nigeria,” the statement added.

In their Separate remarks President of CBCN Ignatius Kaigama and Archbishop of Abuja diocese John Cardinal Onaiyekan harped on peace and harmonious relationship between and among various religious groups saying that all Nigerians should have the right to practice his or her faith without fear of intimidation or moletation.

The duo asked government at all levels to do more to protect lives and property of citizens even as they pledged to continue to pray for Nigeria and her people, the statement added.

Nigerian duo P-Square has postponed their Tuesday concert in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Originally planned as ajn Ethiopian New Year's Eve Concert scheduled to take place at the Millennium Hall on September 10th, the event has now been postponed to September 21st.

Headliners P-Square are currently on a North American tour. Organizers blamed flight logistics for the disappointing news.
"We felt that instead of proceeding with the show without P-Square, it would be better to wait and present the show as promised to our audience," explained Seble Wores. "The show will go ahead as planned on the 21st of September, 2013 at 8pm."
Organizers have reassured concert goers that all tickets sold will be reimbursed or exchanged for new tickets.

President Goodluck Jonathan has reshuffled his cabinet, dropping nine ministers.

The ministers affected are those of Ruqayat Rufai (Education); Zainab Kunchi (Power, [state]); Buka Tijani (Agriculture [state]), Shamsudeen Usman (National Planning; Ita Okon (science and technology); Olugbenga Ashiru (foreign affairs); Ama Pepple (lands) and Hadiza Mailafia (environment).

President Jonathan had long been expected to rejig his lackluster cabinet which has largely failed to deliver services to the Nigerian people. But while the expectation mounts, Mr. Jonathan repeatedly dispelled speculation that he had plans to fire non-performing ministers.

Last August, he unveiled a rating procedure known as Performance Contract Agreement for ministers but said he would not use the result of the assessment in considering who to fire. Mr. Jonathan said the assessment would only appraise his administration's performance and delivery of targets to Nigerians.

"I read all kinds of thing in the media, that the president wants to assess the ministers so that he would know who would go and who would stay. That is not the purpose of this. We would have done it probably in the first week when we came on board, but the key thing is that we have given ourselves points that we think we will get at, we believe that if we get at those points or even if we achieve 70 per cent of that, at least it will be better off for our own country," the president said.

According to the president, the exercise was to ensure enhanced performance, transparency and accountability in governance, adding that it is not a witch-hunting exercise.

"I want to assure every one of you who has taken part in the exercise that this is not a witch-hunt targeted at anybody," the president said in his remarks after the signing ceremony.

The Ex-chairperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Farida Waziri, has spoken of her distress at how, despite committing more than three decades to serving the Nigeria, she was booted out of office without a proper notification by the government.

Mrs. Waziri gave an exclusive interview to Zero Tolerance magazine, produced by the EFCC. The interview was part of events marking the EFCC’s 10th year anniversary.

“If you are removed like that, it has a tendency to scare some people. I wasn’t bothered that I left because my philosophy of life is simple, “what has a beginning has an end,” Mrs. Waziri said in an interview with the agency she headed for more than three years. “The manner of the sack was what bothered me. I have done a span of 35 years, fighting for my fatherland, I deserve some little dignity and respect. When you wake up and you see on AIT, Waziri sacked! NTA, Waziri sacked! Channels, Waziri sacked! That is the style I am talking about.”

“My predecessor’s case was even worse, but I do hope that the authorities will take note. Except you are removed as a result of gross misconduct, any other way you should be treated with dignity, respect for the human person,” she said.

Mrs. Waziri insisted it was the approach of her removal that she frowned at, not about leaving. “I knew I would one day leave. In fact, the handwriting was on the wall. I knew it was matter of time,” she said.

She said the negative impression accusing her of bungling several investigations, was more of a fierce media campaign against her stay in office, and said she faced intense interference in her work. She declined to give names.

“The enemies were many, ferocious; they kept on mounting the campaign of calumny, injecting the poison pen for three and half years,” she said.

“If you open the newspapers, it is Farida; if you open Saharareporters, it is Farida; if you tune the radio, it is Farida. It seems as if I was the worst civil servant in the history of Nigeria.”

The former EFCC boss was sacked in November 2011 in what seemed a controversial circumstance, ending a tenure that many Nigerians and foreign partners believed largely diminished whatever gains Nigeria had made in the fight against corruption.

A DVD seller is now in police custody at Ilasan Division, Lekki, Eti-Osa, over unlawful possession of N15,000 fake N1000 notes.

Chinedu Oneli, 37, after his arrest allegedly confessed to the police that he buys fake naira notes at Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos, and surreptitiously exchanges same for original notes through bus conductors and traders.

According to the police, nemesis caught up with the suspect, who claimed to be from Imo State, southeast Nigeria, when he went to buy a tin of milk with one of the fake N1,000 note at a shop owned by a woman at Jakande Estate, First Gate , Lekki, Lagos.

The trader, it was gathered, discovered that the N1,000 note the suspect brought out to pay for the tin of milk was fake.

And while pretending to be looking for change for Oneli, she allegedly informed some youths in the area about the development.

The youths were said to have confronted the suspect but the suspect simply took to his heels. He was pursued and caught by the youths.

During a search, N15,000 fake N1,000 notes were found in his possession and the youth dragged him to the nearest police station.

During interrogation at the station, the suspect allegedly confessed to that he bought the fake currency notes at Alaba Market, Ojo, Lagos.

Oneli allegedly told the police: “ I am a DVD cassette seller at Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos and I also buy fake N1,000 notes from Zida Ozegba, a trader at Alaba market. I have been doing the business since 2010. Zida normally sells N8,000 fake notes for original N1,000 and N16, 000 fake notes for original N2,000.

“ I exchange the fake notes for original naira through bus conductors and traders. I will board vehicles and give the conductors N1000 fake notes for a journey of N100 and they will give me N900 change. Before I move around Lagos the whole day, I must have finished spending the whole fake notes in my possession and make enough profit.”

After investigation, the suspect was charged before a Tinubu Magistrate’s court on a one count charge of possession of fake currency notes.

The offence, the prosecutor, Sgt. Ighodalo Daniel said, contravened section 363g of the criminal laws of Lagos state, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and Magistrate Mrs. Pinhero admitted him on bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the matter till 17 October, 2013 for mention. The defendant was taken to Ikoyi Prisons pending when he will fulfill the bail conditions.
