Yesterday, at Ijora Badia, in the Apapa area of Lagos State, robbers on power bikes tried to rob a bullion van.

The robbers, who had arrived Marine Bridge on several power bikes, dislodged a bullion van laden conveying a huge amount of money from its escort vehicle by opening fire at them.

It was said that the robbers started shooting sporadically into the air to scare motorists and residents, and attempted to escape with the bullion van. Their progress was  slowed down by heavy traffic.

Punch learnt that the Divisional Police Officer, Apapa, Usman Ndanbabo, and policemen from the Area B Command arrived at the scene after being alerted by the sound of gunfire. The robbers reportedly disembarked from the bullion van and engaged the police in a shootout.

Other police divisions within the area command were said to have also blocked all the escape routes and dispatched anti-robbery teams to assist the Apapa Division.

In the gun battle, a member of the Nigerian Navy and two other civilians were said to have sustained injuries, and  one of the robbers was reportedly killed while another was arrested. The other robbers escaped with injuries.

Vietnamese media report that police have arrested the owner of an unlicensed plastic surgery centre after he allegedly threw the body of the patient who died during a botched operation into a river.

A 39-year-old woman is believed by police to have died on the operating table while Bosom -enlarging surgery.

"After six hours of surgery she began to convulse," journalists said, adding that nobody has yet been found.

Police, citing information from centre owner Nguyen Manh Tuong and his employees, said the woman died despite efforts by the Hanoi centre's staff to revive her.

According to the reports, Tuong then carried victim's body to Thanh Tri bridge and threw it into the river. After doing so he also tried to conceal evidence of the operation.

The victim's husband didn't even know that his wife had been planning to have this surgery, but later on he found a receipt for the appointment, state media reported.

The surgery centre, which has been operating since April, has a business licence but no permit to carry out cosmetic surgery.

The Ministry of Health promised to co-operate with the police investigation.

Although no official statistics are available, media reports suggest the number of Vietnamese women undergoing procedures such as Bosom  augmentation and facelifts has increased significantly.

Many doctors at state-run hospitals also run unlicensed private clinics or offer treatment from their homes.

The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress has threatened to call a nationwide industrial action if the Federal Government fails to stop the ongoing strike by university lecturers under the banner of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The NLC, in a communiqué issued at the end of its National Executive Committee meeting in Kaduna on Wednesday, said it was unfortunate that the government had not taken the expected steps to stop the ongoing strike that has crippled academic activities in public universities across the country.
The President of the NLC, Mr. Abdulwahed Omar, and the Acting General Secretary of the Congress, Mr. Chris Uyot, accused the Federal Government of sponsoring protests against ASUU instead of resolving the lingering crisis.
The union warned that the NLC would not hesitate to call out Nigerian workers to protest across the country if the present situation was not resolved by the Federal Government.
Omar and Uyot also stated that the NLC had taken a decision to intervene in the crisis rocking the university system in order to save Nigerian students from been traumatised by the strike.
