There is tension in Delta State as some youths from Otor-Udu and Jeremi in Udu and Jeremi (Ughievwen) communities in Udu and Ughelli South Local Government Areas, today clashed over the naming of a filling station in the Area.

The filling station which is supposed to be commissioned by the Bishop of the whole, St. Dikeji Daniel Miyerijesu is said to be situated in the strong hold of Otor-Udu community but bears sign post of “Ughelli South.”

Trouble started when the Otor-Udu youths staged a peaceful protest calling for the error to be corrected when their Jeremi counterparts allegedly attacked them along the Otor- Udu/Ughelli road with insistence that the land where the filling station is situated belongs to them.

The Otor-Udu youths retaliated until a team of soldiers from the Nigerian Army 222 Battalion in Ughelli stormed the area to quell the crisis and make peace among the people.

The youths however, resisted the soldiers who were at the middle of the crisis as they exchanged blows with each other, using dangerous weapons and in the process allegedly injured two soldiers.

The soldiers made a retreat and staged a comeback to the area as they allegedly shot sporadically into the air to dispersed the violent youths.

The incident caused serious tension as motorists were forced to abandon the road to meander through other routes.

When the Divisional Police Officer of Ovwian/ Aladja Police Divisional Headquarters, CSP Dike Albert Uchechi visited the scene, he told Daily Post , “My friend, I can not talk to you now. There is tension in the area and I and my men are here to restore order to the area. I will talk to you later.

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, (NAPTIP) in Ebonyi State has taken custody of a woman, Odinaka Ali, arrested by the police for allegedly attempting to sell her three children in Enugu State.

According to the Desk Officer of NAPTIP, Florence Onwa, the 25-year-old woman from Ezilo in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State was living with her husband and three children in Enugu State until eight months ago when her husband abandoned them to an unknown destination.

The woman was arrested following a tip-off by a restaurant attendant she contacted to look for a trafficker who can buy her children as she could no longer take care of them.
“She wanted to sell the baby but it didn’t work. She was so unfortunate because the person she met to assist her sell the baby reported the matter to the police,” said Mrs. Onwa.
However, the suspect denied the allegation saying though she sought financial assistance from the attendant to feed her children and pay her house rent, she never discussed selling them with anybody.

The woman, who said her husband was from Amekpo Ohafia in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, claimed that her arrest by the police and subsequent handover to the State Ministry of Gender Affairs in Enugu State before being brought to NAPTIP Office in Ebonyi State, was a frame-up.
She said,
“My husband is from Amaekpo Ohafia, Abia State. I and my husband had issues before and we later reconciled. We did not have any problem when he abandoned us in April this year”.
“When I stayed few weeks I did not see him, I started doing menial jobs with my little children to enable me feed them. I kept doing this till it became so difficult for me to continue it and I decided to return to my village”.

“I didn’t want to sell my children at the initial time because I passed through caesarian operation before giving birth to all of them. I met a girl who sells food in a restaurant and narrated my problem to her and she promised to assist me.

“l met the girl before, so she asked me to come to her and wait for a woman who will enter into discussion with me. I waited for the woman and she did not come. I did this three times and I told the girl that I will not come again”.

“She persuaded me to continue coming and I changed my heart. Before I could notice it, Policemen stormed the place and started asking me what I was doing there and the whereabouts of the three kids I wanted to sell”.

“I told the policemen that I didn’t want to sell my babies because I gave birth to them through operations. The policemen asked me to follow them to their station and I refused.
“They immediately invited a policewoman who came and asked me to follow them to the station, that I should obey before complain and I followed them to the station.
“While in the station, the girl who asked me to come to her said I told her to start looking for who will buy my children.”

The head of Child Development Department, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Godwin Igwe, called on public spirited individuals to assist the woman take care of the children.

He said:

 “the three children and their mother just repatriated from the Enugu Ministry of Gender and Women Affairs to Ebonyi. The woman is from Ishielu local government area of Ebonyi State. When we interviewed her, she said she is finding it very difficult to survive let alone feed her children. She said her purported husband abandoned her and the children in April”.
“She said it was very difficult for her to be carrying the third child of eight months old for menial jobs and she became a wanderer. So, the Enugu state government repatriated her. Her mother is late and the father is very old and has nothing doing.

“Her major problem is how to eke a living. She said if the government or public spirited individual can assist her, she is ready to take care of her children.
“If she is allowed to continue to wander in the streets, the children are at risk and if anybody approaches her for the children, she can easily release the children to the person and they will become victims of child trafficking. So, the Enugu government did not repatriate her out of malice or hatred but for safety of the children.”

Body of Oladepo Ifedolapo Racheal, the 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I) National Youth Service Corps member, who died at the Kano State Orientation Camp will be exhumed for autopsy.
The Minister of Youths and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung disclosed this on Thursday, while addressing State House correspondents Preliminary investigation by the National Youths Service Corps, said the First Class graduate of Transportation Management from Ladoke Akintola University Ogbomosho, died of a kidney infection.

According to Daily Trust, the sports minister explained that the independent investigation ordered by Buhari would require an autopsy to balance the government’s conclusion on the incident.

“The report given by NYSC is normal and it’s natural that after investigation, they must present their own report on what has happened. But in view of the fact that there are many versions on what led to the death of the NYSC member, it would be fair to look at another version of what happened to be sure of what actually transpired. It doesn’t have to do with (President Buhari) not trusting the process; but gauge the report alongside other opinion; then, we’ll now be able to tell Nigerians that there were the circumstances on how she died. Don’t forget that the report of the NYSC has no autopsy and an independent investigation will require an autopsy. And now, the autopsy, alongside the report, will balance and it will fortify the conclusion the government will make,” Dalung said.

Justice Mohammed Idris of a Federal High Court Lagos, on Wednesday, further adjourned till Jan. 18, 2017, hearing in a suit by former first Lady, Patience Jonathan, seeking enforcement of her fundamental rights.

Jonathan had instituted the fundamental rights suit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, claiming the sum of $200m as damages for inconveniences suffered.

In her suit, she also joined Skye bank Plc, and a former aide to ex president Goodluck Jonathan, Warampo Dudafa as respondents.

Also joined in the suit are four companies namely: Pluto Property Ltd, Seagate Property Development and Investment Company Ltd, Transocean company Ltd and Globus Integrated Service Ltd.

When the case was called on Wednesday, counsel to Jonathan, Mr. Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN) informed the court of a motion seeking to regularise his processes before the court.

Justice Idris granted him leave to amend his processes, while the court also granted leave to the EFCC to amend it’s counter affidavit.

The court consequently, fixed January 18, 2017 for continuation of hearing.

Meanwhile, a similar suit before another judge, Justice Babs Kuewumi has also been fixed for hearing on December14.

It will be recalled that Dudafa was charged alongside the four companies before Justice Kuewumi, on 15 counts of money laundering.

Representatives of the four companies which the EFCC claimed were used by Dudafa to launder the said sum of money, had all pleaded guilty to the offences.

The said $15.5 million, is the same sum which the former first lady, claims belongs to her as sole signatory to the accounts of the companies.

In her suit, Jonathan is urging the court to issue an order discharging the freezing order, and restraining the EFCC and it’s agent from further placing a freezing order on the said accounts.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), have stormed the home of Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, at Park View Estate in Ikoyi, Lagos.

It was learnt that the EFCC officials stormed the house at about 7am on Wednesday, to conduct a search but eventually left after being denied access into the house, Channels TV reported.

Ofili-Ajumogobia and Godwin Obla (SAN) were last week arraigned on 30 counts before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.

Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia, however, pleaded not guilty.

A former presidential special adviser, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, on Wednesday disclosed that she fell in love and married Dele Giwa because of his Press Snaps column.

Dele Giwa, a former Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch magazine, was killed by a letter bomb on October 19, 1986.

Ita-Giwa, who spoke in a radio programme (Hit FM) in Calabar on Wednesday, said she became interested in journalistic write-ups as a result of the works of her mother, Beatrice Bassey-Ita and the likes of Peter Enahoro and Sam Amuka, among others.

She said that she got married to Dele Giwa just barely three weeks after first contact as a result of his intellectual prowess.

The former presidential adviser, who was responding to a question on her relationship with Dele Giwa, said that she followed him to his house on request on the first day that they met to know how he wrote his column.

She said, “I became attracted to journalism because of my mother and the likes of Peter Enahoro, Sam Amuka and others. My mother worked for West African Pilot and later Guardian before she joined Sketch where she retired.

“I stumbled into Dele Giwa because I liked his column. I did marry him eventually not because he was handsome, but what he had upstairs in his brain. When I met him coincidentally, I just told him that I have been reading his columns which I found entertaining and intellectually challenging.

“On that particular day, he looked at his time (watch) and said he was going to do his column, he requested if I follow him go to his house to see how he prepared his column, I agreed. I agreed. We drove from Surulere to Ikeja because I was curious.

“When we got to his house, he went to his study and brought out one old typewriter and sat on the table with a glass of water and cognac and started typing straight from his head without looking at any material.

“He did this up till about 3am the next morning, I was so amazed. I called my mum that early morning through his telephone (landline) to inform her that I was with Dele Giwa and that he was typing his column from his head.

“From that day, we never parted until we got engaged three weeks after. He was a beautiful and intellectually rich human being that had so much in his head. He was very fearless and prolific writer and I was always scared for his life.”

Jackie Appiah celebrated her birthday on Monday, December 5. And as has become her annual ritual of celebrating her big day with the less privileged, the actress this year went to Adenta, where she celebrated the day  with orphans at N.I.C Safe Haven.

Jackie, during her visit, fed the kids and donated several food items, as well as learning material for the children.  The items included bags of rice, bottles of drinks and water, school bags, books and more.

Jackie did not only cut her birthday cake with the kids but also brought some early Christmas cheer to them by decorating a christmas tree she donated to the center.

She also donated some cash towards the administration of N.I.C Safe Haven.

Few days to the December 10 re-run elections in Rivers State, former governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has alleged that Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike cannot deny his involvement and sponsorship of the killing of innocent Rivers people and stalwarts of the APC in the 2015 general elections and the March 19 re-run elections in the state.

Amaechi spoke with newsmen at the Port Harcourt International airport on arrival in the State for the Saturday re-run legislative elections.

He said the cache of arms and ammunitions Wike recovered from cultists during the first phase of the Rivers state Amnesty Programme were evidences to buttress his allegations. According to him,”Wike has not denied he did not kill people, he sponsored those who carried arms in the 2015 general elections, even, during the campaigns.” “Our people were beaten, manhandled and others threatened, leaving many dead, but, we will not continue to allow these things to happen like that.

Members of the PDP were also responsible for killing APC members in Omoku”. When asked that PDP and Governor Wike alleged the Police and INEC in Rivers state have connived to manipulate election results in favour of APC, Amaechi said, “If Governor Wike and the PDP have justifiable evidence, let them present it to the general public and stop blackmailing me or INEC and Police.” “The allegations are immaterial, null and void. Why is Wike and PDP making too much noise and fruitless allegations?”

Amaechi argued that he is more popular than all those in the PDP because, when he left office in 2015 as Governor of Rivers state, he had over 75 per cent support from Rivers people and other Nigerians resident in the state. According to him, “This is so because, as Governor then, l overhauled the Health and Education sectors by promoting Free Health care system and Free Education, over 10,000 teachers were employed, including the building of critical infrastructures, roads and youth empowerment, making Rivers people and other Nigerians to experience change.” “So l am very sure l had more popularity than any PDP stakeholder including Governors across the country.”

Amaechi also averred the All Progressives Congress,(APC) has been campaigning for candidates in the re-run election in remote parts of the state, adding that, his arrival from Abuja on Tuesday night to Port Harcourt marks the third visit to join stakeholders of the party for campaigns in the state. He urged the people of the state to disabuse their minds against comments by the PDP and Governor Wike, which he said, were calculated to rubbish him in the eyes of right thinking persons, in order to score cheap popularity and further whip up public sentiments to heat up the polity.

“On Wednesday, l will also join the APC stakeholders to carry out further campaigns, while on Thursday, there will be national campaign for the Party in the state to indicate our readiness and preparedness for the re-run elections” Amaechi said. He called on Rivers people and other Nigerians resident in the state, including supporters and stalwarts of the APC to turn out en- mass to vote on Saturday urging them to always protect their votes at election venues. “Before now, l used to tell my Party members to vote and protect their votes, but there has been complaints of indecent attacks from the PDP , so, l have asked the APC party members to protect their votes and their lives as well, because the PDP cannot be bigger than everybody everywhere,” Amaechi explained.

Veteran actor, Peter Vaughan, who starred as Maester Aemon in the HBO TV hit series, Game of Thrones has passed on, aged 93.

“This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10.30 this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him,” his agent, Sally Long-Innes said in a statement.

Vaughan become popular after he starred as a villain Harry “Grouty” Grout, in the sitcom, Porridge about forty years ago.

Vaughan began acting in the 1950s and became a recognisable face by playing numerous mainly supporting roles on stage, television, radio and film.

He specialised in characters with a tough edge – such as police officers, secret agents and authoritarian elders.
