Worldwide, the incidence of End Stage Renal Disease, ESRD, is increasing by 6 to 7 percent every year and about 16 million (10 percent) of 160 million Nigerians are suffering from kidney disease. Apart from high cost of treatment and kidney transplants, patients are faced with challenges sustaining their treatment for life as they are expected to be on drugs and ensure regular checks from time to time. In this chat with CHIOMA OBINNA, kidney transplant survivor, Bartholomew Osuji, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, relates his experience as a Policeman and his life after transplant. He expresses worry over the lack of any form of support or insurance for Policemen who come down with ESRD: Excerpts: ‘IT all began one evening in 2008 when I was a Police Officer on incident duty in Anthony area of Lagos. We encountered armed robbers. I was alone in the car, my boys were not with me although nearby around 11pm. I never knew the occupants of the vehicle were armed robbers until they got close and opened fire at the Police van. Luckily I did not sustain any bullet wound. I shouted to my men to return fire and we were able to gun down one of them. After that incident, I was no longer myself. I went to the hospital and was told it was shock from the armed robbery incident.” Bartholomew was taken to various hospitals without tangible investigations until 2009, when he ended up at Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island, where he was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Failure, CKF, and was eventually rushed to India. Role of the Nigeria Police At this point life became tough. Bartholomew’s family expected the Nigeria Police to come in as their bread winner’s problem began while he was on duty. Unfortunately, his employers failed him and even indicted him. “The Police did not take any part in my treatment. They claimed that I did not get any paper from the Federal Minister of Health and Police Affairs before I was flown to India. I told them I was flown to India unconscious. My son went to Abuja twice while I was in India, but nothing came out of it to date. When I returned, I went to the Police and I was told the same thing. Policemen dying: “Many Police men are dying of kidney disorders today because of lack of money. The Nigeria Police will not do anything. At Falomo Barracks where I lived, three Policemen have died since I returned from India. The transplant was financed by the Church of Assumption, Falomo. Reverend Father Innocent who was in charge at that time was of good help to my family. It was he who contacted some parishioners who rose to the occasion. . And that was how I got to India for treatment. Life after kidney transplant After the transplant, things have changed. I cannot do as much as before. I was warned not to strain myself. I have been on drugs since the surgery. In a day, I take drugs five times. To date, I don’t know who paid the initial US$15,000 the Indian hospital demanded before I was given my visa. My last check up in India was also a miracle. Before I got to the hospital, someone had paid US$1,000 into my account. Now, I drink water faithfully, I don’t eat anyhow again. As I go out, I prepare my food. I abide by the doctor’s instruction that I will never miss my drugs. That is how I have been managing my life.” Coping with cost of drugs Every September /October, I go for check up in India and each time I require about US$10,000 because I must buy the drugs I will use for one year. But I go for regular check up at St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos. I was to go every two weeks, sometimes I do that monthly because of the funds involved. The drugs are not cheap. I have been able to cope with the assistance of my Church and my family. Call to Government While I was in India, I learnt that the Lagos State government is working towards building a cardiac centre, Government should do that as quickly as possible. In the hospital in India, many of the doctors are Nigerians. A boy of eight years who did the surgery with me on the same day died last year. There is need for government to invest in this line because many of our people are dying. I thank God I am alive today because of people who contributed to my transplant surgery. I don’t even know them all, particularly the person who paid for the last US$10,000 for my check up. I advise people to believe God in all things. All the period I was sick, I told my wife that nothing happens without God knowing it. If you believe God, he will deliver you. I would also remain grateful to my wife. New information from the Thai government bolsters the belief that missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 took a sharp westward turn after communication was lost. The Thai military was actually receiving normal flight path and communication data from the Boeing 777 on its planned March 8 route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing until 1:22 a.m., when it eventually disappeared from its radar.
Six minutes later, the Thai military detected an unknown signal, a Royal Thai Air Force spokesman told CNN. This unknown aircraft, possibly the missing plane, was heading the opposite direction.
Malaysia says the evidence gathered so far suggests the plane was deliberately flown off course, turning west and traveling back over the Malay Peninsula and out into the Indian Ocean. "The unknown aircraft's signal was sending out intermittently, on/off and on/off," the spokesman said. The Thai military lost the unknown aircraft's signal because of the limits of its military radar, he said. The Plane "turn" was made by computer in the cockpit?
Supporting the case that whoever took the plane off course had considerable aviation expertise, The New York Times reported that the aircraft's first turn to the west was carried out through a computer system that was most likely programmed by somebody in the cockpit
An aviation expert, writing an op-ed for CNN.com, floated the idea last week that whoever changed the plane's course was an expert.
The person who programmed the change of course would have been somebody "knowledgeable about airplane systems," The Times reported, citing unidentified American officials.
The information has increased investigators' focus on the pilot and first officer, the newspaper reported.
But investigators don't know who was at the controls or why whoever it was took the plane far away from its original destination before it disappeared. The Thai latest data is the second radar evidence that the plane did indeed turn around toward the Strait of Malacca.
It follows information from the Malaysian Air Force that its military radar tracked the plane as it passed over the small island of Pulau Perak in the Strait of Malacca.
The radar data is an encouraging sign that investigators are on the right track, but they still are not sure where the plane ended up.
The latest findings say the plane's last known location detected by a satellite is somewhere along two wide arcs: one stretching north over Asia and the other south into the Indian Ocean. The plane's last electronic connection with the satellite was about six hours after it last showed up on Malaysian military radar.

A multiple crash on the Potiskum-Maiduguri highway, involving three vehicles on Monday killed 35 people, including 19 church members on their way back from Lagos where they attended a religious meeting.
“All the 19 members of Redeemed Christian Church of God who were travelling in one bus were burnt beyond recognition as the bus caught fire on collision with the other two vehicles which also burst in flames shortly afterwards,” said Yusuf Sani, spokesman of the Federal Road Safety Commission in Yobe state.
“The victims in the other two vehicles were returning from a wedding.”
The spokesman blamed the collision, which occurred on the highway, on speeding.
On Sunday, 20 traders returning from a local market were killed when the open van they were in collided with an articulated truck, Sani said, attributing the accident to “reckless overtaking”.
Sixteen of the 20 victims were girls who had been selling wares, he added.
Another 10 persons also died in another crash on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.
“We recorded 55 deaths in two road crashes on Sunday and Monday due to speeding and reckless overtaking,” said Yusuf Sani, Nigerian Road Safety spokesman for Yobe state.
On the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash, the Commander of Olympic Unit of the commission, Mr Tanya Adeoye, who made the confirmation, told newsmen in Ibadan that the dead were burnt beyond recognition.
Adeoye said that four persons survived the crash which involved two trucks and one 18-seater Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number BDG 767 XB.
He said that the bus, which was travelling from Ibadan to Lagos was rammed into by a truck while it stopped to allow another truck with registration number SW 175 EPE to pull out of a quarry.
He attributed the accident to speeding and dangerous driving, saying that “the commercial bus immediately went up in flames and the flames later spread to other trucks.’’
He said that the four people who sustained injuries were in the trucks and had been taken to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan for treatment.
“The victims who were burnt beyond recognition were deposited at the Adeoye State Hospital mortuary,” Adeoye added.
He disclosed that the commission was making efforts to contact the families of the victims through the driver’s manifest which was not burnt.

On Monday, March 17, the Chairman of Senate Committee on Health, Ifeanyi Okowa, disclosed that the proposed National Health Bill prohibits the sale of human organs, including human zygotes and embryos. Dr Phillip Njemanze, the Chairman, Institute of Advanced Research and Training, had said that the bill was not in the interest of the Nigerian people as it did not make room for their consent in the sale of organs. He had also argued that the bill would encourage the killing of about 10 million poor Nigerian women who would be willing donate their ovaries for a stipend as encouraged by the bill. However, Okowa debunked the disturbing claims stating: "I think he has a complete misunderstanding of the bill which had the highest attendance in the history of the Senate." Mr Okowa continued that the bill he was talking about was not the bill as presented to the plenary in Senate not to even talk about what the Senate did pass. He assured Nigerians that the bill had been cross-checked and agreed upon at the public hearing. He explained that there had been no laws against such activities hence "this is the first basic law that actually provides a framework for the regulation, development and management of the healthcare industry." He stressed that the bill was to get rid of quacks but also took consideration of the different levels of the industry including the primary, secondary and tertiary health centres. According to the Senator, there are different recommendations for the different levels. The National Health Bill is also government’s attempt at barring Nigerian’s from selling their organs.
