21642  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / US flying ‘manned’ Missions to Track Down Nigeria girls on: 13-05-2014 10:28 AM
The United States was Monday flying “manned” missions over Nigeria to track down more than 200 abducted schoolgirls as experts pored over a new video seeking clues to where they are being held.
We have shared commercial satellite imagery with the Nigerians and are flying manned ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) assets over Nigeria with the government’s permission,” a senior administration official said, asking not to be named.
It was not immediately clear what kinds of aircraft were being deployed, nor where they had come from.
But a new video released by the Boko Haram group purportedly showing about 130 of the girls was being carefully studied by American experts in the hope it might yield vital clues as to where they are being held.
Our intelligence experts are combing through every detail of the video for clues that might help ongoing efforts to secure the release of the girls,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said earlier Monday.
We have no reason to question its authenticity,” she added of the video.
In the video, the Islamic militant group’s leader Abubakar Shekau said the girls may be released once Nigeria frees all the Boko Haram prisoners it has in custody.
But that proposal has been rejected by the Nigerian government, and Psaki recalled that the US policy is also “to deny kidnappers the benefits of their criminal acts, including ransoms or concessions.”
A 30-strong US team arrived on the ground last week in Nigeria to help growing efforts to find the girls aged between 16 to 18, snatched from their boarding school in the northeast of the country on April 14.
The White House said the team included five State Department officials, two strategic communications experts, a civilian security expert and a regional medical support officer.
Also on the manifest are 10 Defense Department planners already in Nigeria, seven extra military advisors from US Africa Command and four FBI officials expert in hostage negotiations.
We are talking about helping the Nigerian government search an area that is roughly the size of New England,” White House spokesman Jay Carney said, referring to the region in the US northeast.
So this is no small task. But we are certainly bringing resources to bear in our effort to assist the government.
Psaki stressed the Nigerian authorities were “in the lead” during the investigation.
The girls’ plight has triggered a storm of outrage across the United States, and First Lady Michelle Obama on Saturday for the first time delivered her husband’s weekly address to the nation to say they were both “outraged and heartbroken” by the kidnapping.
This unconscionable act was committed by a terrorist group determined to keep these girls from getting an education — grown men attempting to snuff out the aspirations of young girls,” she said.

Dancehall artiste, African China, has blown hot on the Nigerian government, accusing the government of not helping the entertainment industry because it (the government) is itself corrupt.

According to the artiste, the first music pirate caught in Nigeria was never prosecuted and till date, no one knew what later transpired.

Our government is corrupt. I remembered the first music pirate they caught, a foreigner, they asked us to come and sign so that the guy could be arraigned. Till today, we have not heard nor ever seen the guy again.

He added that the artistes should also be blamed because they release too many songs into the market without allowing the previous release to have a good balance.

Artistes also should be blamed for releasing too many songs into the market within a year. Aside that, they will now pay the Alaba guys to put their songs on mix tap; that’s piracy and it is bad.
21649  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Woman Gives Birth to Conjoined Twin Girls Who Share a Body but Have Two Brains on: 12-05-2014 02:26 PM
An Australian woman has miraculously given birth to conjoined twins with one body and two brains despite doctors initially telling them to terminate the pregnancy.

Renee Young and Simon Howie, of Tregear in Sydney's west, welcomed their daughters on Thursday six weeks before they were due.

The couple, who found out via an ultrasound that the twins they were expecting was in fact one child with two symmetrical faces and two brains connected by the one brain stem, said doctors were shocked by the girls' exceptional progress.
As the parents of seven other children, Renee and her husband Simon Howie never considered terminating while the girls grew healthy
The condition is so rare that only 35 cases have ever been recorded and none have survived.

Due to the incredibly complex nature of their condition, doctors are so unsure about what to expect from the twin’s condition that they are being forced to make their prognoses day by day.

Mr Howie confirmed that specialists are being called in to decipher a range of problems and assess the twins in great depth, from the functioning of their lungs and blood vessels to decisions about how best to proceed with feeding.

But despite all the forewarned medial problems likely to come their way, Ms Young and Mr Howie are just happy their girls are alive and well.

'I think they're beautiful and Simon thinks they're beautiful so really that's all that matters,' Ms Young told A Current Affair.

As the parents of seven other children, Renee and her husband Simon Howie never considered terminating while the girls grew healthy.
The twin girls were not breathing in the first few moments after their birth, leaving their parents in a state of great anxiety.
But despite problems from the first moments of their birth, in which Faith and Hope were not heard to be breathing despite having a clear singular heartbeat, the girls have now defied all odds and are currently in a stable state and breathing without any assistance.

Although the couple were aware from the early stages of pregnancy that their children would have great developmental problems, they explained that while the girls continued to grow healthily, they couldn’t come to terms with letting their unborn twins go.

'We sort of looked at it as; it'd be the same as being a child with autism or Down syndrome. I sort of don't believe in terminating the baby if it's healthy and growing fine and everything is going to plan,' Mr Howie said.

The proud parents of the small survivors have braced themselves for a difficult path ahead and refuse to say goodbye prematurely.

'I would say, if I only get two days with the baby, I only get two days with the baby - at least I have some time with it,' Ms Young said.

Tragedy struck at the weekend in Aba, Abia State, when one of the bales of second-hand clothes popularly known as okirika, being conveyed by a cargo truck fell off and killed a woman.

It was gathered that the truck was conveying the bales of used clothes from a warehouse in the city to Ngwa Road market when the incident occurred.

According to sources, the driver, identified as Ogbonnaya, was negotiating a bend into the market through one of its entrances, when the bale fell off the truck and hit the woman.

The victim, whose identity could not be ascertained immediately and was said to have come to the market to make some purchases died on the spot.

A source said: “Nobody knew who she was when the incident occurred, but since she was not identified as one of the traders in the market, it means she could be one of those who came to that section of the market to buy second-hand clothes in commercial quantity.”

The body of the victim was later deposited at an undisclosed mortuary, while the truck driver was arrested by policemen from Ndiegoro Police Division.

The state command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Geoffrey Ogbonna, could not be reached for comments, but a senior police officer confirmed the incident and said the police had commenced investigations.
21651  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / BREAKING: Sanusi Lamido Sanusi Wins Case Against The FRCN on: 12-05-2014 01:42 PM
The Judge said the FRCN’s posturing shows that they are prejudiced.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has barred the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, FRCN, from investigating Lamido Sanusi, the suspended governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice John Tsoho said that although the FRCN is saddled with ensuring good governance in financial matters, their posturing shows that they are already prejudiced.

The judge countered the FRCN’s argument that their recommendation to the presidency was merely advisory. He said it was obvious that they had already decided Mr. Sanusi’s fate, even before their investigation.

The language of the briefing note (transmitted by the FRCN to the presidency) conveys a sense of the defendant desperately goading the presidency to deal with the plaintiff,” Judge Tsoho said.

The plaintiff submitting himself for investigation (by FRCN) is like the cockroach finding itself in the midst of fowls. Such a cockroach cannot be innocent,” he added.

Church worshipping Beyoncé has already started losing their members to the cold hands of death. Taniya Hattersfield, aged 23, of College Park, GA was recently found dead of self-inflicted stab wounds to her chest.Taniya Hattersfield who was a new member of the National Church of Bey, an organization practicing the religion called Beyism.  The Church was founded to worship the R&B star, Beyoncé Knowles, with hundreds of members who call themselves Divine Divas and even see Beyoncé’s music as a very sacred text. The founder of the National Church of Bey, has defended the church, and says Beyoncé is lord and saviour.
Taniya Hattersfield was found in a pool of her own blood in the basement of her family home, where she was surrounded by hundreds of candles and a suicide note she had written stuffed behind her pocket.  She lay at the steps of a homemade shrine to singer Beyoncé.
The actual content of the note she left behind was not revealed by the Police, but the Police made it clear that the member of the National Church of Bey took her own life as a sacrifice to Beyoncé at the request of the Church.
The young girl’s mother who had almost lost her mind from the terrible action of her daughter screamed that her daughter was crazy to have taken her own life because of lightskin b*tch that sings. ’’I mean, I know that’s my daughter, but I’m just keepin’ it real”, she said.
Hattersfield father said he  does not consider her his daughter anymore, that his own offspring would never worship any singers. He said just because him and her mother had a good time one Friday night don’t make his my daughter.
Taniya Hattersfield’s body according to reports was yet to be claimed by any of her family members. If her body is not claimed, Taniya Hattersfield may finally be buried in a Potter’s Field, a cemetery typical for homeless people that have got no known families to claim them.
Meanwhile, rage has consumed lots of people over the National Church of Bey, and many people have called for Beyoncé to speak out against the new religion, but not one single word has come out of Beyoncé mouth.

21657  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigeria is One of the Most Dangerous Countries to Bring Children Into the World on: 9-05-2014 04:27 PM
Out of 178 countries in the world, Nigeria is 171 – making it one of the most dangerous countries in the world to bring a child into.

This is a new report by Save the Children‘s 15th annual State of the World’s Mothers Report.

Finland is the safest place, followed by Norway, Sweden and Iceland. 10 African countries round up the list of 178 countries, making them the worst countries.

Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo account for a staggering 20 percent of child deaths.

At 178, Somalia is the most dangerous country for pregnant women and young children in the world. This is due to natural disaster as well as persistent conflict.

The report also states that six percent of women in the African country are likely to die of a maternal cause, and a staggering 15 percent of children will perish before they turn five.

Health, education and the economy in all 178 nations help determine which are the safest and happiest for mothers and children to live in.

21659  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / ‘Don’t Blame The Nigerian Government,’ Senior Adviser Oronto Douglas says on: 9-05-2014 03:01 PM
A senior adviser to Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan insisted that it was “not helpful” to heap blame upon the government in Abuja as it struggles to rescue more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped three weeks ago by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

In an interview , Oronto Douglas, a longtime human rights lawyer who is special adviser to the Nigerian president on research, strategy and documentation, also called for greater international assistance in the country’s struggle against terrorism.

The Nigerian government is doing all it can in collaboration with its allies to ensure that our daughters, the girls, are brought back home — everything in its power,” says Douglas, who was on a visit to Washington.

The perceived slowness of Abuja’s response to the mass abduction has sparked protests both inside and outside Nigeria. Douglas said such criticisms “are normal for democracies,” though he did not say whether they were justified.

This is not about politics, it is about the protection of human lives,” Douglas said. The challenge to locate the missing schoolgirls and free them from captivity is a complex one. Boko Haram, as outlined here, is a ruthless, fanatical group that has escalated its war against the Nigerian state, and authorities fear that an aggressive operation could lead to the militants further harming their captives. “In an attempt to rescue the girls, we must not also endanger their lives,” Douglas says.

The plight of the girls has spawned a viral Twitter meme, joined by prominent global celebrities and politicians. It has also raised questions about the Nigerian government’s handling of the crisis.

Douglas instead pointed to the transnational threat posed by Boko Haram, whose base of operations in Nigeria’s northeast extends across borders into three other countries. “The day when nations act alone are over,” he said. The United States and other Western countries have promised technical assistance in the hunt for the missing girls, and Douglas appealed for more help. “Terrorism is very new in Nigeria,” he said. “You need international support.”

News emerged today that militants had killed up to 300 villagers earlier this week during a nighttime raid on a town along the border with Cameroon; shops and homes were razed. This year alone, attacks attributed to Boko Haram have killed more than 1,500 people. Douglas says that in Boko Haram, Nigeria has found a “more ambitious, more ferocious, more threatening dimension that is threatening the unity of our country.
The capital, Abuja, plays host this week to a session of the World Economic Forum, attended by a coterie of international statesmen, including Chinese premier Li Keqiang, as well as business leaders. The meeting kicked off amid a tense security climate. A Boko Haram bus bombing in the city last month killed dozens.

So Douglas finds it particularly galling that his government has come in for the sort of criticism it has faced since the disappearance of the Chibok schoolgirls. “When a terrorist bomb goes off in Afghanistan, they don’t blame the Afghan government,” Douglas said. “So why the reverse with Nigeria?”

Don’t see the Nigerian government as the problem. Don’t blame Nigeria going forward,” he insisted. “The blame game should be taken to the back burner.”
