1  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Newly-Wed Couple, 16 Others Injured In Third Mainland Bridge Accident (Photos) on: 7-12-2024 06:45 PM

A newlywed couple, along with 16 other passengers, sustained varying degrees of injury in a multi-vehicle collision on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State on Saturday, as they were returning from the Ikoyi Marriage Registry. This was confirmed in a statement by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, on Saturday. Taofiq stated that the accident occurred when an LT bus developed brake failure while at speed and collided with a mini truck.

The impact of the collision was said to have led to the occupants of both vehicles sustaining varying degrees of injuries including fractured limbs. He identified the vehicles involved as a mini truck with number plate AGL 22 YE and a commercial LT bus with number plate BFG 204 XF. Taofiq said, “The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, in collaboration with emergency response agencies, today orchestrated the successful rescue of 18 individuals involved in a serious vehicular collision on the Third Mainland Bridge, near Ilaje, heading towards Iyana Oworonsoki. “Among the victims were a newlywed couple returning to the mainland from the Ikoyi Marriage Registry.

“The accident, which involved a mini truck (AGL 22 YE) and a commercial LT bus (BFG 204 XF), was attributed to a brake failure on the LT bus, which was travelling at excessive speed. The bus collided with the mini truck, which was moving slowly due to mechanical difficulties. “A total of 16 passengers seated in the rear of the LT bus, 11 women and 5 men, sustained significant injuries and were swiftly transported to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre near the Toll Gate on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for urgent medical care.”

He added that two of the victims suffered severe injuries after being trapped in the wreckage of the LT bus and “Were extricated with the combined efforts of LASTMA personnel, emergency responders, and concerned bystanders. These victims were later rushed to Gbagada General Hospital for specialised treatment. Reacting to the incident, the LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the injured victims while urging road users to always exercise caution on the highway. Bakare-Oki who spoke through Taofiq stressed that the ongoing enlightenment by the LASTMA’s Female Elite Corps is aimed at promoting safety on Lagos roads ahead of the festivity.

“Expressing deep sympathy for the injured, LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, wished them a speedy recovery. He also underscored the importance of observing speed limits and maintaining vehicles in optimal condition, particularly the braking system, to prevent such tragedies. “Mr Bakare-Oki further highlighted the intensified public enlightenment campaigns led by LASTMA’s Female Elite Corps, which aim to educate motorists—especially commercial bus operators—on safe driving practices before, during, and beyond the festive season,” Taofiq stated. Emergency responders at the scene of the incident, according to Taofiq, were LASTMA personnel, LASEMA, LASAMBUS and the police.

2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How RCCG Free Buses Gulped N63m Fuel In Seven Weeks – Leke Adeboye on: 7-12-2024 06:41 PM

Leke Adeboye, the Pastor-in-Charge of Youth Province One at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Joseph Palace, FESTAC, Lagos, has revealed that the church spent over N63 million in just seven weeks to fuel the free buses providing transportation between Lagos and Ogun States for Nigerians. The initiative, spearheaded by the church, involved 10 buses shuttling commuters between key routes in Lagos, including 7up, Victoria Island, FESTAC, CMS, Ikorodu and Mowe in Ogun State.

Adeboye told our correspondent on Saturday that in addition to covering transportation, RCCG ensured the welfare of drivers and volunteers who utilised the waiting period to preach messages from Open Heavens, the church’s daily devotional also cost N10m. He revealed that each bus carried 80 passengers per trip, completing two daily trips, five days a week. Also, over the period, the buses transported an estimated 56,000 people, cutting down commuting costs significantly for Nigerians of all backgrounds, including Christians, Muslims, atheists, military personnel, students, and law enforcement officers.

According to Adeboye, this initiative saved each passenger an average of ₦40,000 weekly. “The buses were accessed by everyone, regardless of religion or social status. It was our way of easing the financial burden on Nigerians. Fueling alone cost over N63m. “The free buses were entered by all, Nigerians and non-Christians, Muslims, traditionalists, atheists, Twitter warriors and abusers and accusers of the church. Students, military persons and everyone from all works of life.”

“The buses have also served students, military personnel, and law enforcement officers—both in and out of uniform—as well as less privileged groups like area boys and agberos, we spent N10m on this. “The free bus initiative has been open to all Nigerians and even non-Nigerians, irrespective of their faith or status. It is a testament to the church’s commitment to serving humanity without discrimination. 10 buses x 80 souls x 2 trips per day x 5 working days a week. What number did you get?, ” Adeboye said.

The province, in September, announced in a statement that “The initiative aims to ease transportation costs while also providing spiritual care and guidance. The statement disclosed that buses will depart from Mowe, Ibafo, Berger, and 7UP at Car Park C (near Redemption City) to CMS, as well as from Festac, RCCG Joseph’s Palace, Apple Junction, to Victoria Island and Lekki.”

7  Forum / Law and Crime / Man Jailed For Spiking Woman’s Orange Juice With Abortion Drugs, Causing Miscarriage on: 7-12-2024 06:20 PM

A man who made a pregnant woman have a miscarriage by secretly spiking her orange juice with an abortion-inducing drug has been jailed for 12 years. Stuart Worby, 40, crushed a tablet of mifepristone into the drink of his victim then inserted another abortion drug inside her, after segxwally assaulting her while she was blindfolded.  She had a severe physical reaction within a few hours, suffering vomiting, diarrhea, a high temperature and bleeding.

The woman was 15 weeks pregnant when she miscarried. Worby, of Dereham, Norfolk, at first refused to take her to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, but he later did so and the following day she miscarried her healthy baby.  As she lost her baby, Worby text a friend saying, 'it's working' and, 'there is lots of blood'. In a victim impact statement read to the court the victim said she felt she had 'failed to protect my baby'. She said she had 'gone from fertility clinic to fertility clinic' and 'being a mother was a dream to me'.

She added: 'This pain will never leave me knowing that this baby could have been my only chance to be a mother in this lifetime. I haven't been able to conceive and have another baby.' Worby obtained two types of abortion drugs by persuading a friend's partner to pretend she was pregnant so she could get prescribed them privately, then give them to him. He crushed a tablet of mifepristone into the drink of his victim - who was around 15 weeks pregnant - without her knowledge in what was described by prosecutors as 'deliberate, well planned and callous'.

Worby, of Dereham, Norfolk, later inserted a number of tablets of another abortion drug - misoprostol - inside the woman after using deception to engage in segxwal activity with her. Mr Justice Joel Bennathan jailed him for 12 years for administering poison or using an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage, and a concurrent eight years for segxwal assault by penetration. Worby was also ordered to pay £10,000 compensation to his victim. Portuguese-national Nueza Cepeda, 39, of Dereham, who procured the drugs for him, pleaded guilty to supplying an instrument to procure a miscarriage, and was given a 22 month jail sentence suspended for two years. The mother-of-three's partner Wayne Finney, 41, of Swaffham, Norfolk, was found not guilty of intentionally encouraging or assisting others to commit a crime.

The woman who miscarried described her anguish at losing her baby in an emotional victim impact statement, saying she was now unable to have children after being diagnosed with an ovarian deficiency. She said that her miscarriage had left her suffering 'grief that will never heal' knowing that she 'had failed' to protect her baby. The woman said in her statement: 'I keep thinking what I could have done to protect my baby, but I have the deep pain of knowing that I have failed. 'This pain will never leave me, knowing that this baby could have been my only chance of being a mother in this lifetime.Although I now have a wonderful partner, we have been unable to conceive. I have to face the knowledge that the only baby I could have had was lost.'

13  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Alleged Illegal Oil Bunkering: Investigative Journalist, Soyombo Breaks Silence After Release on: 30-11-2024 12:15 PM

Nigerian investigative journalist and founder of Foundation for Investigative Journalism, FIJ, Fisayo Soyombo, has reacted to his detention by the Nigerian Army 6 Division over alleged involvement in illegal oil bunkering. Recall that FIJ had raised that it’s founder was detained by the army, Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Clearing the air, the army in a statement issued on Friday by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 6 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah said the journalist was arrested alongside other suspected oil thieves at an illegal oil bunkering site.

Following uproar from some quarters, the army on Friday night bowed to pressure and released Soyombo. Reacting to the events, Soyombo in a statement on Saturday thanked Nigerians for demanding his release.

He said, “I’m a free man today because of your social media engagements with #FreeFisayoNow and the publications/broadcasts by the traditional media. And I can prove it.

“After my arrest at about 2am on Wednesday, I was grilled by different levels of the Army until deep into the night. I didn’t return to my cell until at least 11pm on Wednesday. My case was then forwarded to a superior office that was to interrogate me on Thursday. “Surprisingly, Thursday was uneventful; from morning until night, this office never sent for me. I soon learnt the Army would take “as long as it wanted” to conduct their “investigation” just to establish that I was indeed an investigative journalist.

“To my utmost surprise, on Friday morning, at about 11am or thereabouts, I was retrieved from my cell for transfer to the Military Intelligence Brigade (MIB). It was during the transfer that someone who ran into me asked to know my name, after which they said: “You’re the one; you’re in the news.” “Without your pressure, I’d still be in that cell by now, away from civilisation and held incommunicado. So, yes, my freedom is your freedom. This victory exists because of you, you and you. Thank you”!
14  Forum / The Buzz Central / Bobrisky Loses N200m, N1b Lawsuit Against EFCC, National Assembly on: 30-11-2024 08:36 AM

A Federal High Court in Lagos State has dismissed a fundamental rights suit filed by crossdresser Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, also known as Bobrisky, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Recall that Bobrisky had sought N200 million from the EFCC for psychotic trauma and demanded N1 billion from the National Assembly for the violation of his right to a fair hearing.

The crossdresser also asked the court to restrain the EFCC and the National Assembly from harassing, detaining, or declaring him wanted. Bobrisky has been embroiled in controversy after social media influencer Martins Otse leaked an audio recording alleging that he paid the EFCC N15 million to drop money laundering charges against him. Justice Alexander Owoeye, while delivering judgement on the case, held that Bobrisky’s claims of rights violations lacked merit and were unsupported by credible evidence.

The EFCC’s spokesman, Dele Oyewale, disclosed this in a statement on Friday. “Having evaluated the evidence placed before this Court by the Applicant, it is evident that the Applicant has failed to provide credible evidence to justify the award of the declaratory and injunctive reliefs sought by him. “I hold that the claims of violation of fundamental rights against the 1st and 2nd Respondents were not made out of the affidavit evidence placed before this Court. “The Applicant’s claims against the 1st and 2nd Respondents lack merit and are accordingly dismissed,” the judge ruled. Justice Owoeye also refused to award damages against the EFCC.

A Nigerian writer has raised concerns on social media, questioning the Nigerian Immigration Service about why a married woman is required to provide her husband's passport page or proof of his identity to renew her passport. In a post shared on X, the Nigerian writer who is in the process of getting a divorce, stated that began the process of renewing her passport last week but is yet to complete it due to the many requirements women need to meet to get their passports renewed.

She wondered if the service knows how dangerous this demand is for women trying to escape all kinds of things in their marriages, including domestic violence. ‘’Imagine a woman trying to get away from an abusive situation. "Because the name on her birth certificate is different from the name on her current passport, she must put herself back in harm's way to obtain her abuser's passport page just to renew her passport?'' she asked

16  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigerians to Pay More For Calls, Data, SMS as NCC Set Date For New Tariff For MTN, Airtel on: 30-11-2024 08:26 AM

Nigerians may pay more for data and calls as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) gets ready to unveil a new tariff plan for the telecommunications sector on December 13, 2024.  According to NCC, this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to simplify tariff plans and enhance consumer experience in the industry. The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Maida Wada, disclosed this during an interactive session with the media in Abuja. Represented by the Director of Public Affairs, Mr. Reuben Muoka, Dr. Wada confirmed that the new date replaces the previously announced release date of October 27, which was postponed due to incomplete stakeholder processes.

“As of December 13, 2024, a new tariff plan will be announced. We have engaged stakeholders to contribute inputs,” Dr. Wada said. The NCC has also directed telecom operators to limit their tariff and promotional plans to a maximum of seven. This directive aims to reduce complexity, ensure transparency, protect consumer interests, and promote fair competition.

Dr. Wada explained, “With this measure, telecom consumers will experience relief, and misconceptions about the use of data and airtime will be minimized. The commission has been conducting awareness campaigns through advertisements and advocacy to inform consumers.” Addressing concerns about data depletion, Dr. Wada noted that an audit mandated by the NCC revealed a widespread misperception among consumers. “What consumers must understand is that data usage differs across Android devices. The commission has embarked on public awareness to help consumers better understand data consumption,” he added.

The NCC also directed all licensed telecom operators to update their contact details before January 9, 2025, in compliance with the Licensing Regulations 2019. “This directive aligns with the NCC’s efforts to enhance regulatory processes, improve industry oversight, and strengthen Nigeria’s telecommunications sector,” Mr. Muoka stated. He warned operators that non-compliance could result in penalties, including fines, license suspension, or revocation.
17  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigerian Army's Arrest Of Fisayo Soyombo Is To Cover Up Atrocities Of Bunkering – Sowore on: 30-11-2024 08:23 AM

Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow Movement Convener, Omoyele Sowore, has strongly criticized the arrest of investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo by the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and has called for his immediate release. Reacting to the comments of the Nigerian Army on Soyombo's arrest, Sowore expressed his condemnation on X (formerly Twitter), reminding the army authorities that it had no constitutional powers to investigate crimes that were not directly involving its personnel. He maintained that the army knew from the point of "so-called arrest" that Soyombo was investigating oil bunkering carried out by the the usual suspects, including some high-level security officials.

While insisting that the journalist's arrest and illegal detention was primarily aimed at covering up the atrocities, Sowore demanded his immediate and unconstitutional release. Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 general elections, wrote: "I have just read a watery press statement by the @HQNigerianArmy that journalist @fisayosoyombo was arrested on an oil bunkering site and "undergoing interrogation," the Nigeria Army knew from the point of so-called "arrest' that Soyombo was investigating oil bunkering carried out by the usual suspects, including some high-level security officials; his arrest and illegal detention was primarily aimed at covering up these atrocities.

"The Army in Port Harcourt MUST release @fisayosoyombo  immediately.

"Let me reiterate that the @HQNigerianArmy has no powers to investigate or prosecute any crime except the ones involving its personnel; it is the duty of the @PoliceNG. #FreeSoyomboNOW".

We had reported earlier  that Nigerian investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, had been reportedly arrested and detained by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The 6, Division of the Nigerian Army, Port-Harcourt confirmed the arrest and detention. His arrest, which took place three days ago, was confirmed by the Foundation For Investigative Journalism (FIJ) on its official page on Friday morning. It was gathered that Soyombo’s detention may be linked to his work exposing corruption and smugglers aided by Nigerian Customs Services.

The FIJ has called for his immediate release and raised the alarm over the increasing threats to press freedom in the country. Soyombo, known for his investigative reporting on high-profile issues such as corruption, abuse of power, and human rights violations, has previously faced various threats and harassment. "The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has been detaining our founder 'Fisayo Soyombo 3 days running. Journalism is not a crime," FIJ said.

Earlier in November, SaharaReporters reported that Soyombo released more videos to establish his smuggling allegations involving Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) officers. Fisayo, in a statement issued on his verified social media handles, had alleged that Nigerian customs officers had conspired with Adeyemi Habeeb Abdulganiy, an alleged multi-billionaire-naira smuggler better known as Abuga, to illegally pass about 2000 cars and smuggle in bags of rice into the country. He had said the illegal operation was slated to take place on Sunday, 10th of November, 2024.
18  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Crypto Mogul Eats Banana Artwork He Bought For A Staggering $6.2m (Photo) on: 30-11-2024 08:17 AM

After purchasing an artwork featuring a banana taped to a wall for $6.2 million (£4.9m), Chinese cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun has finally eaten it. Recall that the artwork is called ‘Comedian’ and was created by Maurizio Cattelan, the Italian artist. It debuted at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019 and ignited debates over what qualifies as art. Sun acquired the controversial piece at the Sotheby’s auction in New York on November 20.

On Friday, during a press event at one of Hong Kong’s most luxurious hotels, the crypto boss took a bite of the banana in front of dozens of journalists and influencers. He declared it “iconic” and drew parallels between conceptual art and cryptocurrency. “It’s much better than other bananas,” he said, describing its taste as “really quite good”.

Sun revealed his initial disbelief at winning the bid, admitting he had “dumb questions” about the piece, such as whether the banana had spoiled and how to evaluate its worth. However, he quickly saw potential in the purchase, stating, “This could become something big”. By eating the banana at the press event, the entrepreneur claimed he was adding to the “artwork’s history”. At the event, Sun likened the artwork to the rise of NFTs (non-fungible tokens).

“Most of its objects and ideas exist as (intellectual property) and on the internet, as opposed to something physical,” he said. He also suggested that Comedian’s price might increase over time, much like Bitcoin. Sun recently announced a $30 million investment in World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency project backed by US president-elect Donald Trump. His entrepreneurial journey has not been without controversy. Last year, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged him with offering and selling unregistered securities related to his TRON project. The case is still unresolved.

19  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / NNPC Is Lying, Port Harcourt Refinery Not Fully Operational - Ex-NUJ President, Ogundipe on: 30-11-2024 08:13 AM

A former President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ Lanre Ogundipe has accused the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL of lying to Nigerians about the status of the Port Harcourt refinery. Ogundipe in a statement on Friday stated that the refinery was fraudulently packaged. He also noted that claims that the refinery is fully operational is false.

The NNPC had earlier announced the commencement of operations by the refinery. However, the veteran journalist said the claims are false, alleging that only some units of the old refinery have been activated while work at the facility was at a skeletal level. Ogundipe who insisted that the claim by NNPCL is false, called for an independent investigation of NNPCL, saying the celebrations that attended the announced resuscitation of the moribund refinery were immature going by the available facts which have not been contradicted by officials of NNPCL.

The former NUJ President said for Nigerians to have a full understanding of the fraud game that is afoot, there is a need for joint efforts of civil society organizations and the media to carry out further investigations. He added that this would help to ascertain the true status of the refinery, requesting that investigators be granted access to the refinery to obtain accurate reports on its operations.

“The celebrations that attended the announced resuscitation of the moribund Port-Harcourt refinery are immature going by the available fact which has not been contradicted by officials of NNPCL, led by Mr. Mele Kyari. And it can be declared that it is not yet Uhuru with our energy sector, as the much-anticipated relief from the exorbitant price and periodic scarcity of petrol, remains a distant dream.

“Without fear of any contradiction, what has been achieved so far, is that only some units of the old refinery have been activated while work at the facility was at a skeletal level. Though some progress has been made, which stands the NNPCL in good stead to announce that they have flagged off something, that is not to say, that they are already producing 1 million, 400,000 barrels per day. That is not the case and that is not true. Such a claim, credited to the Head of Corporate Communications of NNPCL, is a fraudulent one which has to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

“As it stands, let it be clear that no single product has been moved from the Port Harcourt refinery area into the product reception area of the depot. Some energy experts, expressed similar concerns, pointing out the need for greater transparency from the NNPCL.

“For Nigerians to have a full understanding of the fraud game that is afoot, this column calls for joint efforts of civil society organizations and the media, to collaborate and carry out further investigations, to ascertain the true status of that refinery. The investigation should be independent of NNPCL and they should be granted access to the refinery to obtain accurate reports on its operations”.
