82  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Federal Government Commences Demolition Along Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road Right Of Way on: 28-04-2024 04:40 PM

The Federal Government has commenced the demolition of structures situated on the government's right of way for the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway construction project. David Umahi, the Minister of Works, flagged off the demolition during an interaction with journalists on Saturday.

Umahi clarified that the demolition primarily targeted shanties erected on the government's right of way and emphasized that no infrastructure belonging to the Landmark beach resort was affected. Despite assertions from Landmark, Umahi affirmed that the coastal project would proceed as planned.

"Landmark has unfortunately made so much noise about this. I have revisited the place, and I can say none of his infrastructure is affected. Just the shanties are affected and they are bulldozed already," Umahi stated.

He reiterated the importance of the coastal road project and emphasized that it falls within the legitimate right-of-way of the federal government. Umahi assured that those affected by the demolition would receive adequate compensation, with documentation set to commence on May 2-3.

Bolaji Ariyo, CEO of Mami Chula Beach, expressed support for the project's vision despite the inconvenience it may cause to some individuals. "Some of us are affected, no doubt about it, but those affected are not up to 0.1% of the millions that will enjoy the coastal roads," Ariyo stated.

A recent protest by Landmark employees highlighted concerns over the sand filling of the beach for road construction. However, Ariyo emphasized the broader benefits of the project, aligning with the government's efforts to improve infrastructure nationwide.

A Nigerian man, identified as Eneh Davidson Caleb, along with his Vietnamese wife Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, and 11 accomplices, have been arrested in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on charges of money laundering and illicit money trafficking across borders.

The arrest, which took place on Saturday, April 27, 2024, by HCMC police, follows reports of fraudulent activities involving a company in Ukraine, which had fallen victim to a criminal syndicate operating with forged email addresses. The company had unknowingly transferred funds into bank accounts located in HCMC, as per the fraudsters' instructions.

Upon tracing the money trail, investigators uncovered a sophisticated network involving foreign and Vietnamese collaborators. The criminal ring allegedly operated over 250 companies, utilizing fraudulent bank accounts to facilitate their illicit activities.

Law enforcement authorities identified 13 suspects linked to the case, leading to raids conducted at 12 locations to seize physical evidence. At Caleb and his wife's residence, authorities confiscated 234 seals belonging to the companies implicated in the money laundering scheme.

According to investigators, the syndicate deceived foreign companies into transferring funds to Vietnam under the guise of legitimate business partnerships. The laundered money would then be transferred internationally multiple times before being withdrawn and transported to Cambodia.

During raids at identified locations, including the Yen Sao Kingfood facility and the Duc Long gold shop, authorities seized substantial amounts of cash, totaling VND9 billion ($355,099) and $1.5 million, along with other foreign currencies. Initial estimates suggest that the total value of illegal transactions at the Duc Long gold shop exceeded VND13 trillion.

The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in combating transnational financial crimes, with ongoing investigations aimed at dismantling the entire criminal network and bringing all perpetrators to justice.

92  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Blackface Doubts Plantashun Boiz Reunion, Cites Lack Of Interest From Bandmates on: 28-04-2024 01:07 PM

Ahmedu Augustine Obiabo, popularly known as Blackface, a renowned dancehall singer and former member of the iconic Plantashun Boiz group, has cast doubt on the possibility of a reunion for the once-celebrated musical trio.

Plantashun Boiz, comprised of Blackface, 2Face (now known as 2Baba), and Faze, emerged as a dominant force in the Nigerian music scene during the late 1990s and early 2000s. However, internal discord led to their initial split in 2004, with a brief reunion in 2007 before parting ways once again.

In a recent interview with Channels TV, Blackface conveyed his skepticism about the likelihood of the group reuniting, emphasizing the lack of initiative from his former bandmates.

"I don't see that [Plantashun Boiz reunion] happening," Blackface remarked candidly. "If it is something that would have happened, the members would have deemed it fit to sit down and discuss going forward. Of which they haven't done and don't want to do. I don't want to cajole someone into doing what they don't want to do."

Regarding his relationship with his ex-bandmates, Blackface revealed a cordial association with Faze and the family of 2Baba, but admitted to a strained personal rapport with the latter.

"I talk to Faze and I talk to brothers of Innocent Idibia [2Baba]. His family are all my friends. But personally, me and him, we have nothing to discuss," Blackface explained. "It has to be business. There is no need waiting for who is not ready to be committed to a project."

Blackface's remarks underscore the complex dynamics that often accompany the dissolution of musical groups and the challenges of reconciling personal differences in pursuit of artistic collaboration. As fans continue to speculate about the fate of Plantashun Boiz, it appears that the prospect of a reunion remains uncertain, with each member charting their own musical journey forward.

In a recent development, the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) has announced the suspension of five functionaries in the Benin Kingdom, citing their involvement in sacrilegious behavior contrary to Benin customs and traditions.

According to a statement released by the BTC and signed by the Iyase (Prime Minister) of Benin, Chief Sam Ugbe, the suspension was prompted by the functionaries' visit to the Ooni of Ife, during which they falsely represented themselves as emissaries of the Oba of Benin.

The statement identified the suspended individuals as Johnbull Igbinosun, Iduhonre (Ihogbe), S.E. Aigbiremwen, Efesieoghoba (Ogbelaka), along with two other Ogbelaka functionaries named Ogbeide Osagie and Osamudiame Edo.

During their visit to the Ooni of Ife, the functionaries purportedly proclaimed themselves as subjects of the Ooni and provided inaccurate and disjointed accounts of the historical connection between the Benin Royal Dynasty and the Ooni-ship of Ife.

While refraining from reiterating the well-established historical ties between the two thrones, the BTC urged the public to disregard the misleading narratives presented by the suspended individuals.

To provide clarity on the matter, the BTC directed the public to refer to the authoritative account of the connection between the Benin Royal Dynasty and the Ooni-ship of Ife as documented in the book titled "I Remain, Sir, Your Obedient Servant" authored by the late Oba Erediauwa, Oba of Benin.

In accordance with the authority vested in the Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, His Royal Majesty Oba Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, as the Prescribed Authority over Benin Custom, the BTC announced the immediate suspension of the identified individuals from their roles as Benin traditional functionaries.

The general public has been advised to refrain from engaging with the suspended functionaries in any traditional capacity throughout the duration of their suspension.
95  Forum / Law and Crime / Iraqi Parliament Passes Law Criminalizing Same-Sex Relations & Gender Identity on: 27-04-2024 09:44 PM

In a controversial move, the Iraqi parliament has approved legislation imposing severe penalties for same-sex relations and gender identity, sparking outrage among human rights activists and LGBTQ+ advocates.

Under the newly passed bill, individuals found guilty of engaging in same-sex relations could face imprisonment of up to 15 years, marking a significant escalation in the criminalization of LGBTQ+ rights in the country.

Furthermore, transgender individuals will be subject to a three-year jail sentence under amendments to a 1988 anti-prostitution law, reflecting a broader crackdown on gender identity rights.

The legislation, which was endorsed during a parliamentary session attended by 170 out of 329 lawmakers, underscores the conservative social attitudes prevailing in Iraqi society.

While an earlier draft proposed capital punishment for same-sex relations, the revised amendments authorize courts to impose sentences ranging from 10 to 15 years in prison for such offenses.

Moreover, the law imposes stringent penalties on individuals deemed to be "promoting" same-sex relations, mandating a minimum seven-year prison term for advocacy or support of LGBTQ+ rights.

In a move criticized by human rights organizations, the amended law criminalizes gender reassignment surgery performed for personal reasons, branding it as a punishable offense. Transgender individuals and medical professionals involved in gender-affirming procedures could face imprisonment of up to three years.

The passage of this legislation has elicited condemnation from international human rights groups, who have decried the infringement of basic rights and freedoms, particularly for marginalized LGBTQ+ communities.

As Iraq grapples with ongoing social and political challenges, the enactment of laws targeting same-sex relations and gender identity serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to safeguard human rights and promote inclusivity within the nation.

In a shocking revelation, the widow of the late Yoruba actor, Ajigijaga, has opened up about her harrowing ordeal, alleging that she was discreetly ejected from her husband's house on the same day he was laid to rest.

In an exclusive interview with GistMania, the bereaved widow, whose name is withheld, recounted the distressing events surrounding her husband's funeral and the subsequent expulsion from their marital home.

According to the grieving widow, who spoke on condition of anonymity, she was blindsided by the callous actions of her in-laws, who orchestrated her removal from the family home immediately following Ajigijaga's burial.

"It was a heart-wrenching experience. I couldn't believe they would treat me this way, especially on the day we bid farewell to my beloved husband," she lamented.

The widow described the events leading up to her eviction, detailing how she was subtly coerced into leaving the premises under the guise of family discussions. However, upon realizing the true intentions of her in-laws, she found herself unceremoniously ousted from the home she shared with her late husband.

"I was in a state of shock and disbelief. It felt like a nightmare. I had just buried my husband, and now I was being sent away from the place we called home," she tearfully recounted.

The widow's distressing ordeal has sparked outrage and condemnation from sympathizers and fans of the late actor, with many expressing solidarity and support for her during this challenging time.

As the widow grapples with the aftermath of her husband's passing and the abrupt upheaval in her living situation, she hopes to find solace and justice in the face of this unjust treatment.
