A 30-year-old man who claimed to be an evangelist, Chukwukezi Afonogu, is now cooling his heels in the custody of the Enugu State Police Command for killing his 65-year-old father, Judge Afonogu (not a member of the judiciary) with a gun.

Afonogu allegedly committed the heinous act because the father purport­edly called him a ‘mad boy’ during an altercation, an insult that enraged him so much and prompted the fatal shooting of the old man.


According to Sun,The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, who made this known to Sunday Sun, said the incident happened at 3pm on Au­gust 25, 2014 in Enugu-Inyi, Oji River Local Government Area, Enugu State.

The suspect was said to have been having frequent quarrels with his father. On the fateful day, in the midst of an­other altercation, Afonogu allegedly re­trieved his gun from his room, came out into the family compound and shot his father where he was seated and resting under a tree in the afternoon.

Recounting to Sunday Sun how the incident happened, Afonogu said:
“I am an evangelist and member of the Evergreen Believers Bible Ministry. Be­fore this thing happened, I was having several quarrels with my late father. My father called me on that fateful day and asked me about an electri­cian that was supposed to work in our house and he gave me N500. My late father was a difficult person. The incident happened around 3.00pm. My father called me a ‘mad boy’ and a quarrel ensued. I went inside the room and took my hunter’s gun and shot him. I quickly carried him to a nearby bush and buried his corpse because nobody was at home. Imme­diately I buried him, I ran away. My late father had eight children. The first born died and we have six girls and I am the only son.”
The police boss further disclosed that the mother of the suspect, Anthonia Afonogu ran away from home upon hearing that her son had killed his father.

But nemesis caught up with the suspect when youths in the commu­nity heard that he killed his father. They launched a manhunt for him, and were able to smoke him out four days later. Once caught, the youth beat him to an inch of his life before handing him over to the police at the Oji River Police Station.

A German Ebola expert has reportedly said that it is too late to contain the virus and that the disease will kill 5 million people in the affected countries before it “burns out.”
Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit of the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg told Germany’s Deutsche Welle that:
The right time to get this epidemic under control in these countries has been missed," “That time was May and June.” “Now it will be much more difficult."
Schmidt-Chanasit, a virologist, supposedly said further that “efforts should now be focused on stopping the transmission of the virus to other countries.”
The Centre For Research On Globalization said on its website that the virologist stated that hope is all but lost for the inhabitants of Sierra Leone and Liberia and that the virus will only “burn itself out” when it has infected the entire population and killed five million people.
Schmidt-Chanasit also said the virus will "become endemic" and that the only solution now is to “help where it is still possible, in Nigeria and Senegal for example."
The Ebola outbreak of 2014 has been described as the worst ever by the World Health Organization and over 2000 people have died from the disease in West Africa.

Three Nigerian men resident in India will be deported after being caught in crime, the New Indian Express reports.
According to the Indian police, Oladapo Obasoto Olatunbosun, Dickson M Dickson and Abiodun Oluwagbemiga Oyekunle were arrested for cheating and online fraud in Chennai three years ago and will now be sent back to their country.
Officer Tahsildar Jayaprakash Naraynan said:
“The trio will be escorted to airport from the Special Camp at 3 am on Saturday,”
Tickets for the departure of the suspects have reportedly been purchased and they are expected to board a 9.30 am flight from the international airport at Meenambakkam to Dubai and take a transit flight from there to Nigeria.
Two other Nigerians, Paul Osagie Cyrill and Okechukwa , will also be deported on September 22.

Confusion reigned supreme in Niger state today during a political rally organized by the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN) when a podium on which VIPs were seated collapsed.
The rally took place at the Minna Trade Fair Complex today, September 13, 2014 and was organized to campaign for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan.
However, while the event was ongoing, the platform on which top government officials and chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were seated on suddenly caved in, Premium Times reports.
This caused panic in the arena and many of the attendees reportedly ran for their lives after the unfortunate incident.
According to reports, an unidentified number of people were injured and they have been taken to a hospital.
The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, Gabriel Aduda, reportedly said:
“Whatever happened here, the devil is a liar. No weapon fashioned against us and Jonathan shall succeed. What happened was because the crowd was too much.”

British Olympic Ball - ArrivalsLagos (NAN) The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) said on Friday that  Oscar Pistorius, a Paralympic champion found guilty of culpable homicide, is free to compete as soon as he has served his punishment.

The South African sprinter, who shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on February 14 last year is due to receive his sentence in October from Judge Thokozile Masipa in Pretoria, South Africa.

A statement from the  IPC spokesman, Craig Spence, has confirmed that the athlete will not be barred from returning to the track.

The statement added that the athlete could also participate at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil if he is free by then.

“Yes, we would allow him to compete if he is clear to do so and has served his punishment.

“We have got to allow him to compete once he has satisfied the requirements of the South African legal system.

“Obviously, we have to wait to see what his sentence will be, whether it will be a custodial sentence, and if so, for how long, the stated said.

The IPC spokesman, however, noted that the athlete will face several hurdles ahead of him before returning to the track.

“Can he still reach the qualifying criteria for either the Paralympics or World Championships?

“Will the South African Paralympic Committee [South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee] select him for events? And finally, perhaps most importantly, does Oscar Pistorius want to come back to competing?”.

He added “At the moment we don’t know the answer to any of these questions.

“But regardless of what happens, you can’t question what Oscar has done for the Paralympic Movement.

It said. Pistorius, known as “Blade Runner”, won gold in the T44 200 metres at Athens 2004 before claiming three gold medals at Beijing 2008 in the T44 100m, 200m and 400m.

He also won two gold medals at the London 2012 Paralympics in the T44 400m and the T42-T46 4x 100m relay.

The Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Friday said that there was no reason why schools should not reopen on Sept. 22.

Chukwu said this at a media briefing in Lagos.

“It is for the commissioners of education to advise the principals, at least for public schools, as well as private schools on when they can reopen.

“The ministry of health is like what the weather people are to the nation.

“They will tell you that the weather will be sunny, stormy or there will be heavy downpour, but they can never directly, for example, stop any plane from flying.

“It is for the aviation people to take the advice and combine with other factors to decide whether flights will take off or not.

“So, I want to make it clear that from the technical point of view, there is absolutely no reason why any school, except if they have other problems that are not medical, cannot reopen,’’ he said.

The minister said that the ministry had no objections to schools resuming on Sept. 22.

“So, when the minister of education, working with the commissioners of education, said they have revised the opening of schools from 13th Oct to 22nd of Sept., we have nothing against that.

“If we did, we would have objected or let them know,’’ he said.

Chukwu said the resumption would also give opportunity for children to be taught about EVD.

“It will even give us opportunity to teach the children what EVD is all about.

“It is going to offer us opportunity to reinforce what we are already teaching their teachers because the teachers are going through programmes on how they should handle children who are sick.

“You notice that Nigeria has not closed any market, church, mosque and children follow their parents to these places.

“So it doesn’t simply make any sense yet to continue shutting down the schools,’’ he said.

Chukwu said that people should not relax even though EVD is being contained.

“Luckily, we are still winning. Schools have to reopen. But that doesn’t mean we should go to sleep.

“We know now that there is no place in Nigeria now that we are treating anyone for EVD, but we have not started celebrating yet for the simple reason that we have not yet won the war.

“We do not want surprises.

“No one for now has active EVD in Nigeria, but that is not to say that will be surprised if we have one tomorrow,’’ Chukwu said.

A ferry sank off the central island of Leyte in the Philippines on Saturday evening in the midst of bad weather.

At least 84 people were on the ferry. However, 14 have been rescued so far, and 70 are missing, Yahoo News reports.

Rescue operations are still ongoing.

According to reports, “the ferry had problems with steering and had also been buffeted by heavy rains, worsened by Typhoon Kalmaegi which is approaching the northern Philippines.”

A Nollywood actor has landed himself in big trouble over an Ebola infection hoax that started from him.

Chris Bassey who didn’t want his girlfriend to leave Enugu for Lagos made a call to Arik Air to report that his girlfriend with whom he had a misunderstanding was an Ebola Virus Disease patient and that she has escaped from an isolation ward.

His call disrupted the flight forcing the said girlfriend to be isolated on the aircraft but on getting to Lagos, she tested negative.

Arik Airline ordered the arrest of the Nollywood actor for raising a false alarm that disrupted airline operations on the 29th of August, 2014 around 1:05pm.

According to the report, “Immediately the flight landed at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) in Ikeja, Lagos, Arik Air’s ground staff who had been placed on alert approached the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) medical personnel, but the FAAN officials at GAT said they didn’t have the requisite equipment to screen passengers for the Ebola virus symptoms.

“The aircraft was therefore taxied to the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport. There, the Port Heath officials supervised the disembarking of the passengers and therefore directed the female passenger to be transferred to the clinic for checks.

“The lady was later discovered to be free of Ebola symptoms after thorough examination. She then told Arik Air personnel that her boyfriend who made the malicious call from Enugu did that to smear her name because they had a misunderstanding.

“She further disclosed that she reported the boyfriend to the police in Enugu on August 28.”

Chris Bassey would be charged to court this coming Monday.

Students of Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, on Saturday attacked the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Afe Babalola, as they protested over power outage in Erinfun community.

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered that the students were angry that while they had been without electricity for over a month, a hostel for the junior staff of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, in the same area enjoyed power supply.

The irate students stoned the vehicle of the founder of ABUAD, who was in the car. They also attempted to vandalise the hostel.

The protest caused a traffic gridlock on the road, which stretched over a kilometre.

The arrival of anti-riot policemen, who tried to disperse the students by firing canisters of tear-gas, further provoked them. The students in return threw stones and canisters of the fired tear-gas at the police.

The students, who failed to listen to pleas by the new Ekiti Commissioner of Police, Mr Frederick Lakanu, blocked the Ado-Ijan-Ikare highway.

Commenting on the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Victor Babayemi, said 30 students were arrested and would be charged to court for breach of public peace.

Many commuters were left stranded. A motorist, who simply gave his name as Mr. Jaye, who was on his way to Nigeria Immigration Service office area narrated his experience to our correspondent.

“I planned to visit my siblings at the Immigration office but I had to return to my house because the traffic was standstill. The students are protesting because we have not had power supply for over a month in Erinfun. All efforts made to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria to address the situation did not yield any response.

“The students are protesting because of the nonchalant attitude of the PHCN,” he said.

The Public Relations Officer of ABUAD, Mr. Tunde Olofintila, confirmed that the protesters attacked Babalola’s vehicle and the hostel.

He said, “They complained that the Erinfun community had not been having power supply for over a month and Chief Afe Babalola, as an elder statesman and one of those who facilitated the siting of the polythenic to the state, decided to intervene.”

“He called the rector of the polytechnic, and asked the students to send three of their representatives to meet with the unit head of the PHCN. They agreed but later said they were not going to meet with the PHCN and started the riot.

“They stoned Chief vehicle and attacked part of the hostel in the community. We had no option but to alert the police, who came to restore normalcy.

“The students and some residents in the area asked why Chief Afe Babalola’s hostel had electricity when the community didn’t have for over a month and we explained to them that the hostel was running on a generator and that it was the PHCN that was responsible for power supply and not Chief Afe Babalola,” Olofintila added.

About four years ago, Dokun Adewusi, (left)a 39-year-old from Abeokuta, Ogun State, thought of delving into the business of selling cars. Wanting to take after his friend who was also in the business, he said the huge profit being made attracted him to it, but he did not seek for advice from his friend before embarking upon it. Unfortunately for him, the first time he made a trip to Cotonou to buy a secondhand vehicle for resale in Nigeria, the car was impounded by the Nigeria Customs Service and he made a loss.

So when he got back to Nigeria, he went to his friend to seek for advice. It was then his friend told him about the secret behind his car dealership business: buy stolen vehicles from armed robbers at cheap prices and resell at higher prices, but still lower than the actual market prices.

For three years that Adewusi tried this method, he said he had sold up to 48 cars which were stolen by his armed robber partners. But ill luck caught up with him in June 2014 when one of the cars that his colleagues had stolen was tracked by the police. He was implicated in the matter and is now in the custody of the Special Anti Robbery Squad of the Lagos State Police Command.
