5  Forum / Politics / NEMESIS: Osun monarch collapse in court on: 19-09-2011 06:50 PM
There was a mild drama yesterday at the Osogbo Magistrate Court when the traditional ruler of Ilowa in Obokun Local Government Council of Osun State, Oba Adebukola Alli, collapsed in the dock when the court ordered that he be remanded in prison custody over alleged rape.

It took the efforts of his wife who and two of his aides to revive him.

Presiding Magistrate, Adewumi Makanjuola, had ordered Alli to be remanded in prison custody accusing him of pretending and attempting to evade justice.

The monarch is standing trial before the court for allegedly molesting a 23-yearold National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member (names withheld) who did her primary assignment in his domain.

At the resumed hearing on Friday, counsel to the monarch, Victor Opara, B.P Ogundele and Ogonnaya Elekwachi brought an application urging the court to vacate an earlier order given on June 24, 2011 that placed Alli under house arrest.

The monarch had told the court that his health was not good enough, claiming he suffered stroke and related sicknesses. The court, which ordered for a probe into the matter and sought for medical report from the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, revealed that the traditional ruler was only having headache and not stroke as claimed by his counsel.

The development forced the court in its last sitting to place the monarch under house arrest after two consecutive failures to appear in court.

Counsel to the embattled monarch told the court on Friday that government doctors were not attending to him as directed at last sitting adding that “the directive that government’s doctors should attend to him was not carried out as none of the government doctors came to treat the traditional ruler and that his life is in danger owing to his health condition”.

Alli’s lawyers lamented that as a result of the house arrest private doctors of the traditional ruler could not treat him. They therefore appealed to the court to grant their application and vacate the order of the house arrest so that the monarch can be taken to hospital for comprehensive medical treatment.

In his ruling, Makanjuola said the traditional ruler looked healthy and that the excuse of sickness was just a pretense to evade justice. The judge said the claim of the counsel to the monarch that the life of their client was in danger was very suspicious and that the court could not be deceived.

“In order not to take any more chances in as much as the accused has been shown to be worthy of remand in the prison custody I am of the opinion that his remand will be an answer to this problem. The accused person is hereby ordered to be remanded in the prison custody,” the judge ruled.
6  Forum / Politics / New terrorist group uncovered on: 17-08-2011 10:07 AM
AMIDST spirited efforts being made by the Federal Government to get rid of the excesses of he Muslim fundamentalist group, Boko Haram, ,from the nation's society, another dangerous group has been unfolded.
But this time around, there are indications that members of the new group, might be working for the interest of Northern minority Christians.

The Kaduna Police Command stumbled on the deadly militant group, which is known as “Akhwat Akwop,”  recently.
Already, 57 members of the newly discovered fundamentalist gang have been arrested.
They were nabbed during o swoop by security operatives on their illegal camp, on the outskirts of Kaduna metropolis, following a tip-off.

Almost two weeks ago, members of the group were understood to have threatened 'to rout members of the Boko Haram sect from the state.”
National Daily investigations indicated that the illegal camp of the Christian fanatics is located at Dura Yadi village, Kwoi in Jaba Local Government Area of the state.

The camp is believed to belong to an organisation known as, Advanced Homeland Security and Mountaineering Agency, which is being linked with the sect, specializes in suspected “anti-terrorism training.”
A team of heavily armed anti riot police men descended on the camp and succeeded in making the arrests.
The modus operandi of the group as revealed by security agents showed that members, mostly youths, whose ages ranged from 23 to 30,   might have been recruited from Kano, Kaduna and Anambra States by the organisation upon payment of unspecified amount of money.

It was also gathered that the arrested Head of the organisation and coordinator of the training, whose name was given as, Royal James, is currently helping the police in their investigations.
Confirming the incident, the State Commissioner of Police, Ballah M. Nasarawa, said the new group was involved in an “illegal activity,
“We arrested them because they are being trained as intelligence officer by a certain organisation, Advanced Homeland Security and Mountaineering Agency. A total of 57 persons were arrested.

The organisation is illegal.
“We want to know whether they were cajoled or they went there voluntarily. If our investigation shows that they are innocent, we will not hesitate to release them and if otherwise, they will be prosecuted accordingly”.
Information reaching National Daily from the Kaduna State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), said even though the organisation applied for registration as a private security company, it was yet to be registered because it had not met the requirement.
Sources at the NSCDC office said the organisation “is not registered with us and that is why we have not issued it a license to operate”.

However, it was gathered that some of the arrested youths may have spent about N30, 000 before being recruited into the organisation for suspected “counter terrorism training exercise.”
Father of one of those arrested, Alhaji Ahmed Rufai, claimed that the organisation was introduced to him by one of his friend in Kano State and that he spent about N30, 000 to enroll his 27 year old son, Abdulkarim,  for the training.
“My son is one of those arrested at the camp. We paid N 2,500 to obtain the form and we were asked to take it to DPO for signing.

“When I approached the DPO of Gogoruwa police station in Kano, he did not sign it, he said he was not sure of the organisation. I then became suspicious. They are not particular about an applicant's qualification. I allowed my son to enroll because of what my friend told me,'' he said.
7  Forum / Politics / Jonathan busrt up at last on: 21-04-2011 05:32 PM
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has vowed that government will descend heavily on perpetrators of deadly riots

in parts of the country, accusing them of deliberately wanting to scuttle the remaining elections.

He has also announced his intention to set up a judicial commission of inquiry to determine the immediate and remote causes of the riots in parts of the North which have led to the deaths of many people with property worth millions of naira destroyed.

Jonathan, who spoke in a nationwide broadcast early this morning, has also directed state governors to take charge of the personal security of members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), who have been singled out for attack by hoodlums in some northern states.

Full text of the address reads as follows:
Fellow Citizens and compatriots, Three days ago, I addressed you to express our pride on the successful conduct of the presidential election. I said then that we are all winners and that there are no losers.

I believe that I spoke the minds of most Nigerians, as well as men and women of goodwill all around the world.

We all came together for a historic achievement and to celebrate the progressive march of our democracy. I thank all of you who responded to my appeal on that occasion to reach out to your neighbours with love; to keep our nation united and strong.

This administration had taken practical steps to ensure the attainment of its goal of delivering free, fair and credible elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was reconstituted with credible and non-partisan people to the acclaim of Nigerians and the international community. Despite a few challenges, the new INEC has provided an atmosphere for the conduct of credible elections right from the review of the voter register to the presidential elections which took place last Saturday.

Sadly, some misguided elements do not share in the spirit of our democratic achievements. They formed into groups of miscreants and struck with deadly and destructive force in some parts of the country.

They killed and maimed innocent citizens. They set ablaze business premises, private homes and even places of worship. In some cases, they showed utter disrespect to all forms of authority, including our most revered traditional institutions. They systematically targeted population groups. They singled out and harassed nationalistic politicians. They intimidated travellers.

The mobs also targeted government offices and facilities, especially those of INEC. They waylaid vulnerable Youth Corps members, even though we all know that these young and innocent Nigerians are guests within our communities and are agents of public good and national unity.

We are shocked by these horrific acts which strike at the heart of our nation. These disturbances are more than mere political protests. Clearly, they aim to frustrate the remaining elections. This is not acceptable.

If anything at all, these acts of mayhem are sad reminders of the events which plunged our country into 30 months of an unfortunate civil war. As a nation, we are yet to come to terms with the level of human suffering, destruction and displacement, including that of our children to far-away countries, occasioned by those dark days.

In recent years, we have also witnessed other acts of intolerance, violence and destruction of human life perpetrated by unpatriotic elements for no justifiable reason. Indeed, the nation still bears some of the scars of other similar events like the aftermath of the June 12 1993 elections that brought our polity to the brink. It is inconceivable therefore, that there are some in our midst who seek to re-enact a stalemate in the political process.

My fellow countrymen and women, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Democracy is about the rule of law. It is to its credit, that in recent years our judiciary has demonstrated great courage, fortitude and independence in the discharge of its duties.

There are, therefore, no grievances that our laws and courts cannot address.

I have been in touch with all state governors and relevant security agencies. I have consulted with traditional, religious and political leaders who are also very disturbed by this trend of events.

As president, it is my solemn duty to defend the constitution of this country. That includes the obligation to protect the lives and properties of every Nigerian wherever they choose to live.

I will defend the right of all citizens to freely express their democratic choice anywhere in this country; to enjoy every freedom and opportunity that this country can offer without let or hindrance.

I assure all Nigerians that I will do so with all powers at my disposal as President, Commander-in-Chief.

I have ordered the deployment of security personnel to troubled parts of the country. I have also directed the reinforcement of security in all parts of the country.

I have authorised our security services to use all lawful means, including justifiable force to bring an immediate end to all acts of violence against our fellow citizens.

In view of the condemnable attacks on our gallant Youth Corps members, I have directed all state governors to take personal responsibility for their security and safety in the states where they serve.

I have directed that the perpetrators of these dastardly acts of violence and all those who seek to continue to breach the peace and stability of this nation must be fished out and made to face the full weight of the law.

In this regard, a Judicial Commission of Inquiry will be constituted to look into the immediate and remote causes of this recent tide of unrest.

I urge all Nigerians to remain law abiding. I appeal to parents to take full charge of their wards.

We must not allow anybody to use innocent youth as cannon fodder for the ambitions of a few. Let us preserve the sanctity of the lives and future of all of our children.

On behalf of all Nigerians, I express heart-felt condolences to the victims of this violence. I lament the loss of lives; destruction of means of livelihood; the burning of homes and places of worship
I appeal to all members of the political class, leaders of thought and traditional rulers to continue to put our national interest first at this critical time.

Particularly, I call on our religious leaders not to use the sacredness of our places of worship to promote messages that could lead to hate, disharmony and disaffection. Rather, we must all at this time join hands and support INEC in ensuring a successful conclusion of the commendable work which they started.

I appeal to all communities around the country to show restraint in the face of provocation. I urge all Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayers for peace and tranquility in our country.

I assure you all that calm is being restored in troubled parts of the country and that the elections scheduled for next Tuesday will go on as planned.

All Nigerians should therefore go about their businesses without fear and exercise their franchise on April 26 to vote for candidates of their choice in the next round of elections.

To those who persist in sowing the seeds of discord, I say, you may hurt and bring grief to some innocent families momentarily, but you will never succeed in stopping our transformational journey: a journey that will lead this country, by the grace of God, to emerge stronger, more prosperous and more united.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us continue to build a nation in which we all live in peace.

A nation where the bonds of our common aspirations and goals will spur and re-energise our resolve towards greatness. A nation where our children from North and South, East and West will grow with hope and live together as brothers, sisters and friends. Let us always remember that we are all part of a shared destiny.

I thank you all. God bless Nigeria. Angry Angry
8  Forum / Politics / Nigeria lost N210bn on NASS, presidential election days -Lagos Chamber of Comme on: 21-04-2011 05:23 PM
The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has estimated that Nigeria lost the sum of N210 billion Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a figure which was arrived at, based on the first day of the (National Assembly) election which was later cancelled and the other two days when the rescheduled National Assembly election and the presidential election were held.

Speaking on Wednesday in Lagos at the quarterly press briefing of the chamber, the president of LCCI, Chief Femi Deru, pointed out that for each day of the election, the economy shutdown and losses were recorded in terms of output and income.

“Though the election was inevitable, investors’ confidence was weakened because of the uncertainty that comes with elections, especially with our track record of managing political transitions. An estimated N70 billion was lost daily on the election days which was mainly shouldered by informal sector businesses as many of them depend on daily incomes.”

Chief Deru noted that the late signing of the budget had serious implications for projects that should be executed to improve the investment environment as well as the welfare of the people.

“Many approvals for public sector projects and contracts have not been attended to because of the elections. We are, however, optimistic that the economy would regain momentum as soon as the elections are over.”

The LCCI president commended President Goodluck Jonathan and the chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Proffessor Attahiru Jega, for conducting what it described as a credible and transparent election.

He noted that there was a substantial consensus on the intergrity of the process. “We are on thee threshold of entrenching power of the people to determine who our leaders would be, and this is good for the nation’s image perception and general investors’ confidence. We commend INEC, the security agencies and all Nigerians for making us have a credible and transparent election.”

“There are pockets of areas where there are still challenges, it is emphasizable that democracy is not just about elections. It is about the participation and inclusive engagement. There is need for us to engage those who will emerge as our leaders on issues of transparency, accountability, probity and performance. Our economy has suffered greatly because of the political leadership and high integrity deficit.”

“We hereby urge those with grievances on the outcome of the elctions to channel this through constitutional means rather than resort to acts of violence. Such action would erode the goodwill which the country deservedly earned from the peaceful and orderly conductof the elections.” Angry
9  Forum / Politics / I‘ll probe Jonathan, Obasanjo on power –Buhari on: 19-03-2011 08:51 AM
The  presidential candidate of Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), General Mohammudu Buhari, on Friday declared that both President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo have questions to answers if he is voted into power.

The former Military Head of State stated this at a presidential debate organised by NN24, a television outfit.

Buhari said unequivocally that he was not satisfied with the effort made so far by the government of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since 1999.

Jonathan was conspicuously absent at the debate attended by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu of Action Congress of Nigeria (CAN), Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau of All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and Buhari.

“We need to know how much has been spent so far. Over $16 billion was spent by Obasanjo regime, yet we don’t have power. Also, the current government under Jonathan said we now have over 4,000 mega watts, yet our people don’t have the power” Buhari said.

Asked whether he would probe successive governments on power fund, he replied: “What I said was very clear. We want to know how the money was spent because Nigerians doesn’t have the power.”

While the CPC candidate was keen to know how the public fund has been expended on the different failed power projects by the PDP government, his ACN counterpart believes the problem of power sector needs holistic approach.

Ribadu, former Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said there are lots of problems that needed to be addressed in the area of personnel and government dealings for power to stable in Nigeria.

“There are basic problems that must be fixed. In fact, there are lot of saboteurs in and outside the government that must be effectively checked in the interest of our country.”

He lampooned the Federal Government for not doing enough to tackle problems associated with power supply. Shekarau noted that one of the reasons why power has not been stable in the country is as a result of a disconnect between government’s plans and genuine effort to concretize its actions.

Confronted with corruption allegations, he allegedly leveled against the former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, Ribadu denied calling Tinubu a corrupt politician and a looter.

“I never passed judgment on Tinubu or any other Nigerian as EFCC chairman. It is not within my purview to sentence any Nigerian before trial” he said.

All the three candidates faulted zoning formula for elective posts in the country. They averred that every Nigerians should be allowed to aspire to the office of their choice without ethnic and tribal sentiments.

Soliciting votes from Nigerians, they all said a new Nigeria is possible and urged the electorate to defend their votes.

SSS nabs suspects with 54 AK47 rifles, 784 bullets, rockets, grenades
WITH preparations for the 2011 general elections now in advanced stage, the political jobbers are also strategizing for another kill. National Daily intelligence gathered that in most of the politically volatile states, the residents are already jittery even as rumuors of arms-build up spread. In recent months there have been police reports of weapon seizures from suspected gun-runners and other hoodlum which raise safety concerns as Nigerians look to elections campaigns and final balloting.
In the latest case of infiltration of weapons, officials of the State Security Service [SSS], Borno State have arrested and paraded five men in Maiduguri over possession of 54 pieces of AK47 rifles, one rocket and one grenade.
National Daily gathered that other items recovered from them included: cash of N4.8 million, a set of FRSC traffic jacket with face caps and hand gloves, 784 live ammunitions, three pieces of military long knives, nine military short knives, one computer set, a hammer, cutlass, set of leather luxurious travelling bags and a set of spanners stock in cartons and sacks/bags of fish concealed in the back seat of the Mercedes Benz car.
Already, security agencies have intensified investigations, there are suspected ploy by some influential politicians in the North to destabilize the forth coming general elections in 2011. On the agenda of these Northern elements is also an attempt to lure some Niger Delta militants back into the creek to disrupt the amnesty already achieved in the region.
The aim is to make the country ungovernable for President Goodluck Jonathan during the election period.
The five suspects paraded alongside the recovered items at the SSS Headquarters Maiduguri, were found in a red coloured Mercedes Benz car with registration number Lagos EW 93 AAA and a milk coloured Peugeot station-wagon with registration number Plateau AG 144 BUU on their way to Wukari in Taraba State according to the suspects who confessed to the press.
The State Director of SSS, Borno State, Alhaji Abdullahi Ahmed said the arrest was in two phrases.
He said during the first arrest that was made on July, 30, 2010, four men - Yakubu Sule, aged 25 from Taraba State who is a 400 level Sociology student of University of Maiduguri, Mono Musa, aged 25 from Taraba State and a Creative Arts student of University of Maiduguri, Daniel Chiyi aged 53 years from Jos South in Plateau State and Amos Akila from Taraba State and the leader of the group were nabbed.
According to the Director, Amos Akila who was arrested and charged last year in Kaduna for a similar offence, was arrested again barely a year he was granted bail. He has confessed to the SSS that he is the group leader working for one Mallam Zoro based in Maiduguri.
On August 12, 2010, the SSS Director said his men intercepted one Elisha Emmanuel, a driver from Ibbi LGC of Taraba State, aged 45 years as he was conveying 23 AK 47 rifles, 103 live ammunitions, 12 military knives inside cartoons and bags of fish and grains, inside his Peugeot car.
Elisha Emmanuel confessed that he was on an errand for one Mallam Josaya Awuri who is the owner of the said items and loaded the items inside the vehicle himself before he left and told him that he would meet him in Wukari.
The suspect further said that he is married with 12 children. He also said that he was a full-time commercial driver shuttling the Maiduguri-Wukari route.
According to him, Josya Awuri used to be his customer as he used to convey some of his goods to Wukari from Maiduguri in the past.
Elisha further confessed that he was aware of the arms stock in his engine and side doors by Malam Josaya but he complained to him that the items could be implicating but the owner of the items told him, there was no problem.
However, the four men that were arrested with the red Mercedes Benz car were in a bungalow near Giwa Military Barracks Maiduguri on 30th July 2010, and were about travelling out of town to Wukari in Taraba State. One of them, Yakubu Sule claimed innocence over the matter, while Amos confessed committing the offence. But Daniel said he was dragged into it by the others.
They however failed to disclose the source of the cash.
The smart arsenal concealment methods and networking of the gunrunners across the states makes it imperative for the security agencies  to brace for the tough battle against smugglers as the clock ticks fast toward 2011 polls.
The last time such a seizure was made was in August 2007 when one shipment of illegal arms from the Ukraine bound for Nigeria contained 950 AK assault rifles, 150 under-barrel grenade launchers to suit AK-47, 1 million rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, 475,000 rounds of 4.45 mm ammunition, 500 pistols, 300,000 rounds of ammunition for the pistols, 8,000 hand grenades, 200 RPG launchers, 1,000 RPG projectiles, 500kg of TNT, plus various mortars and mines. This one consignment had 1.5 million rounds of ammunition in comparison to 28,745 rounds of ammunition achieved in the current amnesty. One illegal shipment had 60 times more
There are an estimated one million to three million small arms and light weapons in circulation in Nigeria. But, whereas illegal small arms are most commonly associated with militia activity in the Niger Delta, it is the civilians in the villages that possess the majority of weapons in the country. These weapons pose a significant challenge to law and order, political stability and a high risk to personal security.
The number of illegal small arms seized by Nigeria's customs is ridiculously small. In November 2003, Nigerian customs officials intercepted a lorry carrying 170,000 rounds of ammunition concealed in a cargo of charcoal that had crossed the border from Benin into Nigeria. This was a significant intervention but rare.
But with the ongoing lull in the Niger Delta region weapons seizures at border points known to be key ports of entry for shipments of illegal arms such as Lagos and Port Harcourt are uncommon.
The illegal arms dealers at the Aba, Onitsha and Enugu arms markets, National Daily gathered obtained their weapons shipments by road and operate with seeming impunity.
Informed sources revealed that security chiefs have been put on red alert to curb the possibility of further infiltration of the country's borders by hired arms smugglers.

14  Forum / Politics / Zoning whala on: 2-08-2010 07:12 PM
Political leaders, the group of 15 (G15) steered by former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, plan to decide next week on power rotation.

The G15 comprises Babangida, Atiku, Aliyu Mohammed, M.D. Yusuf, Adamu Ciroma, Bello Kirfi, David Jemibewon, and Iyorchia Ayu.

Shettima Mustafa, Lawal Kaita,  Hamza Abdullahi, Magaji Dambatta, and Patrick Adaba are also members.

Their meeting will review the decision by the majority of Northern Governors to support the zoning arrangement in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It will also review the resolutions of the Northern Leaders Forum (NLF), the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), and the Northern Union (NU).

The G15 wants to respond collectively to individual overtures they have been getting from the campaigners for President Goodluck Jonathan.

Meanwhile, Atiku’s Media Spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said his principal will declare his Presidential run at a press conference in Abuja next week.

Just in time, Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, disclosed at the weekend that any attempt to frustrate Babangida out of the PDP will be resisted.

He also argued that  “nobody should be intimidated because no one has come up to discuss issues about the zoning or how we can get out of it for us to move forward.”

Aliyu bared his mind at a rally to mark his victory at the Supreme Court in Abuja, where he expressed the resolve of the government and people of Niger State to support the Presidential race of Babangida.

He said the decision is based on the zoning in the PDP, which should enable the North have its own fair share of the Presidency for eight years, beginning from 2007, after the Olusegun Obasanjo tenure from 1999 to 2007.

“We are supporting IBB because he is our son, and since he is looking for the 2011 Presidential ticket under the PDP, we have no choice but to support him in actualising his ambition.”

Aliyu explained, however, that he is not against Jonathan contesting alongside Babangida on the platform of another party.

“Whoever is the choice of God will eventually emerge winner, no matter the pressure from other candidates from the North and from other political parties. We will ensure that the PDP has enough supporters to emerge victorious in 2011.

“The PDP arrangement on zoning should be respected. If for any reason it was discovered that the concept is no longer workable, all we need to do is to sit round the table and review our earlier stand and move on so that nobody will be offended.

“The PDP constitution provides for eight years for the Presidency of Northern extraction and the same for a Southern candidate. The death of President Umaru Yar’Adua scuttled that plan, so all the PDP need do is to come back and discuss on how we can move on.”

Aliyu said since zoning is a PDP affair, and now that it is generating confusion, it is left for the party to discuss how to resolve it, so that everyone can move forward.

All the party needs to do is to remain united and focused towards retaining its mandate of providing quality leadership for Nigerians at state and federal levels, he added.

Niger State PDP Chairman, Mahmud Enegi, has also disclosed that the state will abide by the constitution of the party on zoning, irrespective of the decision of the national PDP.

Enagi maintained that zoning has over the years helped to create balance and political stability in Niger State, where it will continue to form the basis of voting.

Nonetheless, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State at the weekend maintained the stand of the South East Governors Forum that none of them will vie for President or Vice President next year, saying they have more pressing matters to deal with.

He told a phone-in radio programme in Awka that the position of South East Governors does not prevent others from the region from contesting  for the Villa.

His words: “South Easterners are free to contest, only that the Governors agreed among themselves that they will not contest for the Presidency or make themselves available as Vice President.

“The Governors realised that they have more critical jobs now trying to unite the people of the zone. Without unity first the efforts at the Presidency would not achieve much.”

He noted that back in 2007, all South East Governors wanted to become President and the effort ended in futility.

He said at the time, governance was grounded and the zone suffered for it.

“We cannot encourage our people to spend money unnecessarily on a project they are not adequately prepared for. It will not only portray us as insensitive to the actual needs of the zone, it will make us lose focus.”

Obi reiterated that the Governors  will support any Presidential candidate with the best programme for the South East.
15  Forum / Politics / How nigeria can honour even the rotten eggs in the amongs us on: 23-07-2010 08:07 PM
PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan yesterday took stock of Nigeria’s 50 years of existence as an independent nation, hinting at a collective failure of both the leaders and the led over the period, and called for systemic re-orientation rooted in excellent citizenry cum quality leadership for the nation’s rebirth.
The President spoke at the 2009 National Honours Award Investiture Ceremony in Abuja where he bestowed various national honours on about 186 distinguished Nigerians.
He said: “This country is a land of men and women of honour. From this year of our Golden Jubilee, Nigerians at home and abroad must resolve to excel in any productive activity we engage in. This administration will continue to provide quality leadership as we promote the value of honesty in the public sphere, hard work, patriotism and excellence.”
President Jonathan stressed that the profiles of the 3,924 recipients of the national honours since independence attested to their distinguished accomplishments in various human endeavours, adding that the bar would be raised for future awards.
He said: “The institution of the national honour since the First Republic should be preserved for the inspiration it offers for greatness. It is a veritable instrument to draw our attention to the possibilities within the Nigerian enterprise despite the huge challenges we have.
“This country is a land of men and women of honour as simply attested by the profiles of the distinguished awardees today and in the previous years.
“However, the bar will be further raised in the award process so as to further challenge compatriots to strive towards excellence. The critical observations made by the public about the institution are well received by government and they will be useful in making it a greater national idea.
“The exemplary contributions of the recipients in the different segments of the Nigerian society should propel us to try to make the true Nigerian character one of patriotism, hard work and excellence. It is often said that Nigerians turn out to be among the best as they compete with other nationals outside our shores.”
The National Honours Award was established by the National Honour Act No.5 of 1964. The Act, empowers the President to establish by Warrant the Nigerian Order of Dignity to honour deserving citizens who have contributed to the development and progress of the country in any field of human endeavour.
The Honours warrant of 1964 established two categories of the Nigerian Order of Dignity (NOD) each with four ranks, including the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) consisting of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCFR), Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
The second NOD includes Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and Member of Order of the Niger (MON)
Honoured yesterday with the class of medal of GCON were former Chief of General Staff, Rear Admiral Okhai Michael Akhigbe (rtd); Chief Justice of the Federation, Aloysius Iyorgyer Katsina-Alu and former Senate President Joseph Wayas.
Former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Justice Niki Tobi, and erstwhile Speaker, House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba received the CFR medal.
Also, the first Civilian Governor of Delta State and President-General, Urhobo Progress Union, Olorogun Felix Ibru, who was represented by his brother, Mr. Goodie Ibru; and Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, received the CON honours.
Goodie Ibru said: “The idea behind the award is a sound one. It is a way of encouraging Nigerians to serve their country selflessly with the expectations that one day the country will recognise the role they are playing. The idea to me is commendable.”
Sanusi told The Guardian that his award was an endorsement by the Federal Government and a prove that the current reforms in the banking sector were appreciated.
His words: “I think it sent the right signal in terms of endorsement of the actions taken and support for us to continue. It strengthens and endorses the actions taken by CBN, including safeguarding depositors’ funds and restoring confidence in the financial system.
“When we came on board, we met a banking system that was on the verge of crisis. There would have been a major catastrophe if the banks had gone under. The CBN has been able to pull the banks away from that imminent collapse and restore their balance sheets, albeit taking some tough steps in the process.”
Okonjo-Iweala said the award was a call for more service. She said: “It is always an honour and privilege to serve one’s country in one capacity or the other. Some of us are called to serve in the frontlines of war and others are called to use their intellects.
“Nigeria is a country with a difficult and checkered economic and political history and at 50 years, many Nigerian still wonder what have we achieved and how far have we gone. Whatever cynicism may lie in our minds, we must put it aside to remember that we have only one country and that it behooves us to love and serve it. I am convinced that the impossible can be made possible once we have the will power.”
The award ceremony was held amid tight security as major roads leading to the venue, the International Conference Centre were shut to traffic by a combined team of Nigeria Police, the Military, the Immigrations, Customs and the Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, backed by the Special Anti Bomb Squad.
Commercial and personal vehicles heading towards the venue were turned back while those of invited guests and award recipients were directed to the open ground beside the Conference Centre.
A tense atmosphere was palpable at the main gate leading into the centre where a mammoth crowd tasked security personnel to their limit.
Even with their invitation cards and accreditation tags, guests were thoroughly checked at the gate before they were allowed entry.
This security measure created a long queue and delays at the gate, which kept guests frustrated with some breaching security twice to gain entry. Angry
The event attracted dignitaries across the country, including governors, past and serving ministers and former heads of state.

FROM all indications, drug barons are getting more desperate in thye way they conceal narcotics. This came to the fore last week when operatives of NDLEA at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos, foiled plans by drug traffickers to export 63.1kg of narcotic drugs concealed inside fufu and bronze cast out of the country. The drug consists of 36.550kg of methamphetamine hidden inside fufu meant for export to Japan, while the remaining 26.550kg tested positive for amphetamine and was to be exported to South Africa. Two exporters Uche Emmanuel, 39 and Akhabighimhe Bernard, 43, have also been arrested in connection with the crime.
The suspects have made confessional statements and are cooperating with investigating officers in both cases. Uche Emmanuel who specializes in the exportation of foodstuff said that an old friend introduced him into the illicit trade. "I met an old friend in Lagos. When I told him I was an exporter he was excited and said he has business for me and we exchanged telephone numbers. After some weeks he said that he wants me to export some chemicals for him. He also told me to conceal it because he had no NAFDAC permit. He equally suggested that I hid it inside fufu and promised to pay me 15,000 dollars. The drugs were given to me by him at Cele Bus stop on Mile 2 Expressway in Lagos", Uche stated. He hails from Ohafia in Abia State.

Akhabighimhe Bernard who is also an exporter and a manufacturer of bronze works had a similar story of how he got involved in the illicit trade. He concealed 26.550kg of amphetamine inside 18 pieces of bronze cast.

"I was lured into the illicit trade by a friend. He told me that it will be easy for me as an exporter to send the goods to him. I know that I did it for the money but it is due to greed otherwise I am doing fine".

The goods were intercepted on May 17, 2010 and he was arrested three days later while he was about to board a South Africa Airline flight to personally receive his goods in South Africa. He hails from Auchi in Edo State.

:oFive suspects, including a traditional ruler in Enugu State, Igwe Cornelius Nomeh, were on Wednesday arraigned and remanded in prison custody by an Enugu magistrate’s court for the alleged kidnapping of a 300-level medical student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Nomeh, 65, who is the traditional ruler of crisis-ridden Oruku community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of the state and his co-accused, allegedly committed the offence on May 14, 2010 at Nkpologu town in the state.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Emmanuel Nwaru, said the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the alleged offences contained in the five-count charge preferred against the accused persons. He therefore ordered the suspects remanded in prison custody, pending the transfer of the matter to the High Court.
In his ruling, the chief magistrate said the suspects were free to apply for bail at the High Court, since his court lacked the power to grant it.
The five-count charge was read to the suspects after which no plea was taken.
Meanwhile, shortly after the magistrate ruled, the monarch, clad in a royal regalia, asked for permission to speak.
When it was granted, he said, “It is quite unfortunate that the police, as an institution, which ordinarily should protect lives and property, is intimidating people. The police are trying to smear my good image by roping me into such a criminal matter.”
Nomeh; his wife, Ngozi; and one of his sons, John; were recently paraded along with some kidnap suspects by the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, Mr. Mohammad Zarewa, at the state police headquarters in Enugu.
The suspects were arrested by members of the State Special Anti-robbery Squad at Nomeh’s palace at Oruku, following a tip- off that the kidnap victim simply identified as Ifeoma was abducted by some unknown gunmen at New Haven area of Enugu and taken to Oruku
20  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / how emeka ike emerges GUS winner on: 8-06-2010 05:40 PM
Emeka Ike, the Nollywood star actor, surprised his admirers  and critics alike (even himself) when he beat a strong field of 10 top Nigerian celebrities made up of Funke Akindele, Weird MC, Chioma Chukwuka, Muma Gee, Bob Manuel Udokwu, Daddy Showkey, Darey Art_Alade and Princess to become the first winner of the Gulder Ultimate Search(GUS) Celebrity Showdown.

Inside the expanse, pristine and serene La Campagne Tropicana Resort Lekki, Lagos which hosted the 11 week old GUS Celebrity reality TV show, entertainment buffs, friends and fans of the celebrities gathered last Saturday for the unveiling of the winner of the first GUS Celebrity Showdown.

With Daddy Showkey, Darey Art_Alade and Emeka Ike, the last men standing, the die was cast for the history maker; but unknown to the audience history had already been made earlier in the day as the three contestants had concluded the last task of the reality TV show with a winner already awaiting to be crowned.

Even when the wait which began from 12 noon to about 7pm seems like eternity, there was no dull moment as there was unlimited entertainment from the Sharp Band. The celebrities who had earlier been evicted from the show also took time out to relieve their experiences.

There was also great musical performances by Muma Gee, Weird MC, Obesere, Banky W (who was the MC) and comedy by Princess, the lady with ‘natural airbag.’ There was animated discussion in the audience as who will likely cart home the star prize in the Nigerian Breweries Plc sponsored reality TV show.

The final task was simple but the ultimate task. The host, Genevieve had addressed the three remaining contestants and gave clues on how to find the Golden Goblet buried in the beach sands. They were to dig according to specifications and measured distances to locate the treasure. But first they had to construct a ladder to be able to access the shovel.

Both Showkey and Darey wasted no time in their construction and went straight into action. But Emeka Ike had difficulty as he took quite some time to build the ladder.

Like the saying, “he who laughs last laughs the best,” Emeka soon joined Dare and Showkey measuring his shovel five lengths away from the red flag as directed by the host. Within minutes of digging, just beside Darey, Emeka hit the treasure pot and dragged out the black box containing the Golden Goblet.

Showkey was exasperated. Darey shook in disbelief. Emeka shouted excitedly. With his find, he became N7.5 million richer and went into history books as the first Celebrity to win the GUS Celebrity Showdown.

An elated Emeka later said in an interview that he was happy to be the Last Celebrity Standing. He promised to be a good ambassador of the brand.
