125  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Just In: Court Summons AGF, DG DSS Over Pro-Democracy Activist, Omoyele Sowore’s Detention on: 17-12-2019 05:18 PM

The Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, on Tuesday, summoned the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, and the Director-General of the Department of State Service, DSS, Yusuf Bichi, to appear before it on Monday to explain the continued detention of pro-democracy activist, Omoyele Sowore.

The court, in a bench ruling that was delivered by Justice Inyang Ekwo, ordered the duo to appear and show cause why it should not direct the unconditional release of Sowore from detention.

Justice Ekwo mandated the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court to immediately notify both the AGF and the DSS boss of its summon, as well as the pending fundamental rights enforcement suit Sowore and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, initiated against them.

Sowore and Bakare had in their suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1409/2019, alleged gross violation of their constitutionally guaranteed fundamental rights.

They are demanding an aggregate sum of N1billion from the Respondents, as general and aggravated damages for their breached rights to personal liberty, dignity of person, fair hearing, family life, freedom of association and freedom of movement.

Aside seeking for an order of perpetual injunction to restrain the Respondents from further violating their rights, the Applicants demanded for a public apology in five national dailies.

At the resumed proceeding on Tuesday, counsel to the Applicants, Marshal Abubakar, who is from chambers of Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, notified the court of a fresh ex-parte motion for Sowore to either be released from detention or produced by the DSS.

He said the move became necessary after operatives of the DSS re-arrested Sowore at the premises of the court on December 6 and had since retained him in custody.
126  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Man, Francis Ephraim Narrate How His House Was Razed Down By Police Teargas Canister In Calabar on: 17-12-2019 05:07 PM

A teargas canister shot by Operation Puff Adder, a team of policemen combating drug peddlers and hoodlums has allegedly set a thatched house on fire in Calabar.

The grass house located on 6, Murray Street off Target Road went up in flames after the police team in hot pursuit of hoodlums fired gunshots and launched teargas canisters sporadically around the street and one of the canisters fell on the roof of the thatched house and eventually set it on fire.

Prince Francis Ephraim, the owner of the house said that the incident occurred in the morning of 13th December and has left him and his family of seven staying in the open.

Quote
"That early morning I wanted to go out but decided to prepare something to eat and when the food was ready I took it to the parlour to eat and suddenly there was a lot of firing by police and I heard a sound on the roof of my house, ‘kpem” and I came out and saw smoke coming out from the place the sound came from”.

He said when he went inside to get some water to put out the smoke he heard neighbours shouting “fire” “fire” and he rushed out to try to put out the fire but the flame only increased.

Quote
“Somebody brought a car and we drove to the fire service and we got there they said they have been informed of the fire outbreak and came with us and tried to put out the fire but did not have enough water to put it out”.
The distraught man said everything in the house was razed down and he was left with only the boxers and tee-shirt he was wearing while the children who had gone out at the time had nothing left. He narrated that he went to a local radio station, Hit Fm to tell them his ordeal.

One of the staff followed me to see what had happened and from there to the State Police headquarters where they met the Deputy Commissioner of Police Operations who on taking a look at the house asked” the Hit Fm reporter if he could call “this a house?”.

From there we went to see the DPO Atakpa and he invited the leader of the Puff Adder team and the men expressed empathy with what had happened and said the team will on its own do something since waiting for the federal government will take time.”

He said the DPO asked him to see him the next day and when he got there the man asked for the teargas canister and when he refused to hand it over, the DPO said “it will not be well with me”.

Prince Ephraim said non of the hoodlums the police was after took refuge in his house neither had he anything to do with drugs and could not understand why the police fired at his house. DSP Irene Ugbo, the Cross River Police Command did not pick her calls

128  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Just In: Nigeria's Inflation Rises To 11.85%, Recorded As The Highest In 19 Months on: 17-12-2019 04:08 PM

A new report released on Tuesday by the National Bureau of Statistics showed that the nation’s inflation rate rose to 11.85 per cent in November, its highest level since May 2018.

“The consumer price index, which measures inflation, increased by 11.85 per cent (year-on-year) in November 2019. This is 0.24 per cent points higher than the rate recorded in October 2019 (11.61) per cent,” the NBS said.

It said the composite food index rose by 14.48 per cent in November, compared to 14.09 per cent in October.

“This rise in the food index was caused by increases in prices of bread, cereals, oils and fats, meat, potatoes, yam and other tubers, and fish. On month-on-month basis, the food sub-index increased by 1.25 per cent in November 2019, down by 0.08 per cent points from 1.33 per cent recorded in October 2019,” the bureau added.

Analysts at Cordros Capital Limited said in an emailed note that the increase in the inflation rate was in line with their expectations for continued food price pressure.

“The dual impact of the sustained border closure and festive season-induced demand took a toll on food prices, as food inflation surged by 39 basis points to 14.48 per cent year-on-year. The increase stemmed from farm produce (+36bps), processed food (+101bps) and imported food (+4bps). However, the initial reaction from the border closure seems to be fading, as food prices, on a month-on-month basis, dipped marginally by 8bps,” they added.

131  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / NUJ Reacts As EFCC Moves To Seize Sun Newspaper Following The Arrest Of Orji Uzor Kalu on: 17-12-2019 03:17 PM

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has advised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to exercise restraint in its move to seize the Sun Newspaper.

National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, in a statement on Tuesday, expressed worry that the agency had given a notice to staff of the organisation to vacate the premises.

The EFCC said it will enforce a court judgement which ordered for the seizure of property belonging to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu who was convicted of fraud.

Leman, in his statement, said:
Quote
“While we appreciate the efforts of EFCC at fighting corruption in the country but we hasten to caution that any attempt to throw Journalists out of work for whatever reason in such a hasty manner is not good for democracy.

“The media as pivots to good governance and democracy must be allowed to flourish unhindered. We, therefore, urge for restraint in this regard to allow for the appeal filed to be determined first before any decision is taken.

“We are afraid that moving hurriedly to seal off The Sun may be misconstrued as politically motivated. This action regrettably is being taken without any consideration to the essence of preserving vibrant and virile journalism at this time when the profession is facing increasing challenges.

“We need to preserve the jobs of the media workers in The Sun Newspapers by being circumspect and prudent in this respect”,
the NUJ scribe added.

A former governorship candidate under the Action Democratic Party in Lagos State, Babatunde Gbadamosi, has said no worker can comfortably live with the new minimum wage of N30,000 in Lagos.

Gbadamosi while speaking at a conference in Lagos, said a minimum wage of N100, 000 should be paid to workers because of the high cost of living in the state.

Gbadamosi said,
Quote
“Lagos should be paying at least N100,000 minimum wage because of the high cost of living in the state.

“There is no worker that can live comfortably on N30,000 salary in a month. The bad roads force transporters to keep increasing fares, rents are high, Lagosians pay so much to send their children to school.

“Lagos State internally generated revenue in a month is said to be above N30bn and that is the official figure. The state gets allocation from Abuja every month, so, can we say we get value for about N40bn made in a month?”

Gbadamosi said the roads in Lagos were so bad that people were dying in the gridlock caused by the poor condition of roads.

According to him, road construction and rehabilitation are the easiest tasks that can be done in governance, saying a kilometre of road in difficult terrains in the country will not cost more than N300m.

He said,
Quote
“The Apapa gridlock has not been sorted out contrary to the promise made by the governor that he would clear the gridlock in his first 100 days in office. I knew it was a tall order. He was probably prompted to make that promise by his political advisers.

“ The palliative work they are doing on the roads is a waste of resources. They said they could not lay asphalt on the roads during the rainy season but the dry season is here, yet they are not doing what they promised.

135  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / WTH! Police Officers On Highway Forced A Traveler To Make N500,000 Withdrawal On Gun Point on: 17-12-2019 02:12 PM

Some police officers have been accused of forcing a traveler to make a withdrawal of N500,000.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has been urged to do everything possible to checkmate the nefarious activities of policemen who are on major highways and to ensure the safety of travellers.

According to the Executive Director of Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) Okechukwu Nwanguma, his organisation had been receiving disturbing information and complaints about harassment and extortion of people traveling to the Eastern parts of Nigeria by police and other law enforcement agents as well as incidents of kidnappings along the highways.

He disclosed that these crimes were being committed mainly around the Benin axis, particularly, the Benin Bypass.

He said:
Quote
“Some of the victims have made audio recordings narrating their ugly experiences; others have made posts on social media, while others have called to complain and seek interventions. These crimes are committed at checkpoints where commercial vehicles are stopped at random and the occupants ordered to come down for search of their bodies and luggage.

“The mostly targeted are people who just returned from outside the country. We have received complaints from- or about – some travellers who were taken to ATM points and forced to withdraw money from their accounts and hand over to the police officers before they are let to go. Some are also allegedly forced to effect transfers using POS.”

Nwanguma recounted a recent case, where one Dennise, a Nigerian based in the Netherlands, reported that he just returned to Nigeria for holidays and had a nasty encounter with the police.

Quote
“Dennise said that on 8th of December, he was on his way, traveling from Lagos to the East, when he was stopped along Benin Road by a team of security operatives who claimed to be Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives. He said the operatives extorted N500, 000 from him via bank transfer. He posted the transaction information, which showed that the transfer was made through a First Bank POS with the name of the beneficiary given as Chukwuemeka Unah Ewan,”
said Nwanguma.

Nwanguma recalled that recently, following information received by RULAAC of a similar extortion in Lagos, upon which the organisation petitioned the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ensured the arrest of the policemen and recovered the sum of N700,000 from the rogue officers which they forced their victim to transfer to them through POS.

He further explained that days after that incident, a similar one occurred whereby, a young man, who just returned from London reported being arrested along with his friend after their Uber driver, who was taking them to a destination was flagged down.

Nwanguma said:
Quote
“They were taken to a police station and detained until the next day for no stated offence and released after his relatives transferred the sum of N50,000, which he handed to their captors. Although, the Lagos State PRO, upon being informed about this case, asked the victims to come and assist the Police in identifying the alleged rogue officers, the victims were afraid to go back to the Police.

“We commend the Lagos State Police Command for being firm and decisive in dealing with corrupt and predatory police officers. Unfortunately, this is not the same in other commands.

“Edo State is notorious for these criminal activities by Police Officers under its command. Edo State Police Command should borrow a leaf from Lagos. With the increasing cases and reports of harassment and extortion of citizens travelling to the East, especially along the Benin axis, RULAAC hereby calls on the IGP to make a clear statement warning police officers to desist from posing threats to the rights of citizens to free movement and safety on the roads.

“The IGP is called upon to put in place appropriate measures to protect citizens and to monitor police officers on patrol along major high ways with a view to apprehending those who abuse their powers.”

A newborn died after doctors failed to catch him when his mum pushed him out in a hospital in the Argentinian city of Gualeguaychu.

Grieving father Claudio Mondragon said he had witnessed the tragedy as his wife Stefania gave birth to their son Valentino.

The baby boy was transferred to a specialist hospital in the nearby city of Parana, but he was pronounced dead before arrival.

The 29 year old father, Claudio, told local paper:  “My wife was in labour and was just about to have the baby and they asked her to push and she pushed so he would come out.

“He came out really fast and no-one grabbed him and he fell to the floor.

"The midwife didn’t have time to catch him and the obstetrician didn’t react.

“The only thing they did was lift him up from the floor and put him in an incubator and take him to another hospital.”

The baby boy died as he was being taken to San Roque Hospital in Parana.

The investigation, led by a local state prosecutor, will determine if his death is the result of medical negligence and whether anyone should face criminal charges.

Valentino, whose 26-year-old mum Stefania was 37 weeks pregnant when she gave birth, has already been buried by his grief-stricken parents.

A preliminary autopsy is said to have concluded the baby boy died from a head injury consistent with a fall.
137  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigerian Customs Seize 140 Bags Of Foreign Rice From 'President Buhari’s Storekeeper' In Daura on: 17-12-2019 01:32 PM

Operatives of the Border Drill Operations of the Nigeria Customs Service have seized 140 bags of foreign rice at a warehouse in Daura belonging to Alhaji Habu Sarkin-Fulani, a confidant of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr Sarkin-Fulani who is a trusted ally of the president who receives and conveys gift items to the president.

Gistmania reliably gathered that the customs operatives, acting on a tip-off, stormed Fegi quarters in Daura, the hometown of the president, and seized the rice.

Sources said the rice was given to the president through Mr Sarkin-Fulani before ban on importation of foreign rice was imposed.

“Alhaji Sarkin-Fulani is a trusted ally of President Muhammadu Buhari. Alhaji Sarkin-Fulani will never touch what does not belong to him, even at the risk of rotting away. He keeps everything meant for the president in his warehouse at Fegi area of Daura. Even the president’s farm and cows, Alhaji Sarkin-Fulani is in charge.

President Muhammadu Buhari with his storekeeper/farm manager Alhaji Habu Sarkin-Fulani at his farm in Daura.
“Whenever the president visits Daura, he gives the president account of what is in store for him, and he (Buhari) would direct how the gift items could be utilised or distributed,”
a source in Daura told our reporter.

When contacted for comment, spokesman for the Nigerian Customs, Joseph Attah, neither answered a reporter’s call nor responded to a text message seeking response of the service.

Customs officials have been raiding warehouses and markets since Nigeria banned importation of foreign rice last year.

Last week, the Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, RIFAN, urged the federal government to sustain its current border closure in order to boost the economy.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has called for total respect to the rule of law in Nigeria.

Mr Lawan spoke in Abuja Monday while responding to a question by a journalist who asked about the repeated violations of the rule of law by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

“It (rule of law) is something that we all have to adhere to,” Mr Lawan said.

He said part of respect for the rule of law was to ensure that those suspected of criminal activities are taken to court; but they should also be freed if they are not found guilty, he said.

The latest of such violations occurred when armed State Security Service (SSS) officials stormed an Abuja court to arrest an activist, Omoyele Sowore, who had been granted bail by a court.
139  Forum / Relationships & Romance / How A Prostitute And A Club Girl Changed My Life For Good - Nigerian Man Shares Rare Experience on: 17-12-2019 12:58 PM

A Nigerian man has shared the story of his life how a prostitute changed his life for good. He believes his experience can help many people to see that good things can come from the most rare and ignored places.

Read the post shared by AllahKaduna Nzeogwu on Facebook:

"Weeks ago I attended a child dedication ceremony in Port Harcourt, among other notable people in Port Harcourt who were in attendance, was a serving Commissioner in Rivers State. My friend's child was the celebrant and he the host.

The mistake most of us made in life is lack of the wisdom to distinguish a casual friend from a relationship, hence, we treat prospective partner like a casual girlfriend, and treat a girlfriend like a wife.

Years ago, me, this my friend and one other of our friend used to be roommates in a One room self contain in Port Harcourt. Though things was rough for us, we were almost oblivious of the realities of our poor circumstances, hence our primary concern was money for beer, sex, food, clothings and contributions for rent.

We were together when he met his wife. We met her in a club, normally any of us taking a woman for the night goes home first, after action he sends a message then the others come back. The only consideration is that we leave the bed for them and sleep on the floor. The only time we leave the room to sleep in a neighbour's room is when the girl is not a club girl.

Usually, after the first person that brought a call girl home is done, the other two try to negotiate for a side show which is often half price of the Night, but that day she was so upset that my friend didn't tell her he had other people sleeping in his room, she refused to let me or the other guy to do even with our money.

In the morning she kept insulting my friend, and reported him to us for telling her he likes her and would want to make her a serious date. She ridiculed him and began calling him "Osho Free". She said my friend thought she's naive, that he is looking to be having sex with her without paying by telling her about relationship despite knowing that she is a hustler.

The next weekend, he didn't come back home, next morning he told us he went to the call girl's apartment and he had to pay higher because she initially refused to see him because of him having roommates, then they agreed they do their transaction at her apartment but on a higher price.

That's how my man began dating this lady, then we honestly believed he was under Edo spell and spending all his money. We kept advising him that it was only a man who just moved to the city from the village that falls in love with a commercial sex worker.

The lady began coming over on weekends to cook for us, we soon became friends, though we never disrespected her to her face, we continued to discourage our friend because she kept doing her normal business and my friend's defense was that she told him she was never going to sleep with his friends, neighbours or colleagues even for a million dollars.

In those days we didn't really have big dreams, aside securing a job that could pay up to N70K per month. We were yet to realise that we have graduated, we kind of still lived lives as students. We just graduated from the university. Our highest aspirations was a Master's Degree, ability to afford Toyota Camry and move to a bigger apartment.

Until the day, the girl told us about "Water Hyacinth" contracts in NDDC, then it was a new agency. She has an inside contact and would present my friend as her brother. My friend is from a non-NDDC state while she is Edo, but since I am from Abia State I was to partner with him while the girl arranged Local Government Certificate of origin from Edo State for him. My job was to use my Legal professional skills to draft our proposal and also defend it at the NDDC.

Few months later we got the contract, for the first time in my life I realised how poor I have been.

Well, from that day i stopped calling the girl "dancer" and began addressing her by her name. I and the other guy stopped being condescending to her.

She later arranged for another Interior Decoration contract, I know Aba very well so I was the person that sourced all the materials and arranged the skilled labourers from Aba.

We moved to a 2 Bedroom Flat and bought cars, my friend and his girlfriend took one room while me and the other guy took one. In less than 6 months we went for her Traditional engagement. From that day, as bro code I started addressing her as "Madam " being my friend's wife.

They later moved to another apartment. My friend was the first amongst most of our contemporaries to buy a land in Port Harcourt and began building.

Well, a club girl changed our life for the better. Sometimes, I sit back and wonder where I would be and what I would be doing today if we didn't meet that girl or we succeeded in persuading our friend to leave the girl. I would probably be in my Learned Senior's chamber hustling for Appearance Fee so that I can go to court to be screaming "I put it to you".

I have not seen my friend for some years but he insisted I come for the occasion, he wanted us to discuss. He told me they were relocating to Australia. That the wife got a contact and they paid huge amount of money. Him and his family are moving, but he will come back from to time because of his several engagements in Port Harcourt."
