2  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Appeal Court Stops Yahaya Bello’s Contempt Proceedings Against EFCC on: 3-05-2024 09:36 PM

The Court of Appeal, Abuja division on Friday, issued an order stopping the contempt suit filed by the immediate past governor of Kogi State, Mr Yahaya Bello, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Recall that Bello had filed a fundamental human rights suit against the EFCC to protect himself from being arrested and detained.

Justice Isa Abdullahi Jamil of the Kogi State High Court delivered a ruling on February 9, where he issued an interim order restraining the EFCC from arresting, detaining, persecuting, or prosecuting Bello pending the determination of the suit.

The anti-graft on its part, filed an appeal to set aside the ruling but later withdrew the appeal because it has been overtaken by events.

This is after the commission filed a suit against Bello at the Federal High Court Abuja that issued an arrest warrant against the ex-governor

However, Bello again approached the Kogi High Court and filed a contempt suit before Justice Jamil.

Consequently, the anti-graft agency approached the Appeal Court to stay the contempt proceedings initiated by Bello against its chairman, Ola Olukoyode.

A three-member panel of the appellate court presided over by Justice Joseph Oyewole, assisted by Justice P. C. Obiora and Justice Okon Abang, granted the request of EFCC, staying the execution and contempt proceeding.

A team of lawyers led by Jibrin Okutepa, (SAN), alongside Eko Ejembi Eko, (SAN) Abdulkareem Musa, Esq, and David Ojogbane Akogu, Esq all appeared for EFCC.

In granting the orders, Justice Oyewole held that the motion ex-parte had merit and adjourned the hearing of the motion on notice to the 20th day of May 2024.

The court in Appeal No: CA/ABJ/CV/413/2024, also ordered for substituted service of all the processes in the case to be pasted at No 9 Bengazi Steet Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, being the last known address of Yahaya Bello.

The justice said, “The 2nd motion moved for an order to serve the respondent Yahaya Bello all the processes in the appeal by substituted means through the mode stated on the face of the motion is hereby granted.

“The court grants the motion that processes be served through substituted means by pasting on the gate of the last known address of the respondent”.

The command also arrested a 45-year-old man who allegedly produced fake alcoholic drinks at the makeshift factory.

The suspect, Chiemenam Adigwe, 45, a native of Akpo community in Aguata LGA, Anambra State, mixed ethanol with water, added flavour and then packaged the fake drinks in empty bottles of Gordons, Chelsea, and McDowell’s, which he usually bought from Onitsha, Anambra State.

4  Forum / Law and Crime / How Lagos Police Arrest 10 Suspected Ritualists on: 3-05-2024 09:28 PM

The Police Command in Lagos State says it has arrested a gang of 10 suspected ritualists, who specialise in killing people and selling their body parts to ritualists.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed their arrest on Friday, while parading them before newsmen.

Hundeyin said that the leader of the gang, a 33-year-old man, Ademola Akinlosotu, used to exhume corpses from cemeteries and sell the parts to money ritualists.

He said those arrested included a community chief, an Ifa priest, an Osun priestess, an Islamic cleric and a trado-medicine practitioner.

He said they were arrested through intelligence reports from members of the public.

Hundeyin said that report obtained by the police also revealed that the suspects usually bring in people to their hide-out, adding that those people never came out alive again.

He said exhibits of different human parts were recovered from the suspects.

He said the police were on the trail of other suspects.

The spokesperson of the Police Command in Lagos State said the suspects would be charged to court as soon as  investigations were completed.

Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of the parade, the leader of the gang, Ademola, said he was got the human parts from dead bodies buried at the cemetery, before he graduated to killing – a job he had been doing for years.

Ademola said he moved to killing people to harvest parts because his clients requested for fresh parts and not dead body parts.

He said while he and some members of the gang would do the killings, he supplied the parts.

Ademola said he usually supplied the parts to a 52-year-old man, Ahmed Wahab, aka Alfa Bororo, who operated from Badagry in Lagos State and Ogun, to supply his clients.

According to him, a fresh human head is sold at N45,000 or N50,000 while a dry human head sells between N30,000 and N35,000; heart  for N70,000 and hands for N50,000.

Ademola also said that he had only killed two persons, which included a friend he met through the social media, before he was arrested.

He said before they killed anyone, the harbalist will be contacted to consult the oracle if the killing would be successful or would bring trouble.

The suspect claimed that a traditional ruler in Badagry requested him to kill his son that was giving him problems.

He also said that the day they were to carryout the killing was the day his online friend visited him and he was killed.

The suspect said all he needed was the head, the heart and the hands.

6  Forum / The Buzz Central / “I Would Rather Work With Carter Efe Than Portable” - Young Duu on: 3-05-2024 09:18 PM

The rapidly growing Nigerian musician Oluwabamishe Abioro, better known by his stage name Young Duu, has decided which of his employers he would choose to work with.

According to his Hip TV interview, he would rather work on music with comedian Carter Efe than singer Portable. This comes after Carter was criticized by Young Duu for not giving him any money for their song “Oyinmo,” which they collaborated on.

Even though the ‘Machala’ crooner didn’t give him any money, the 20-year-old artist said he would like to collaborate with Carter Efe. He says that compared to Portable, Carter is more connected and powerful. It’s important to remember that Young Duu began performing long before he became well-known in 2023, having signed a record label contract with Zeh Nation, which is controlled by Portable, a well-known and controversial street pop artist.

But since Portable asserted that Young Duu hadn’t made any money since joining the record business, he was forced to quit. Then, he quit the record company to work with singer and comedian Carter Efe from Nigeria. The pair released the popular song “Oyinmo,” which became popular on music streaming services.

Comparing Carter with Portable, he said,

“I will rather work with Carter Efe than with Portable because he has more connections and if he is ready to do something, he do it.”

“It is not that Portable does not have connections, he has connections too but I know what I’m saying”.

Some accolades Genevieve Nnaji has received throughout her career of more than 30 years and featuring in over 100 movies include the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2005, the Black Reel Award for Outstanding Foreign Film for her movie, Lion Heart in 2019, amongst others.

The Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) chose her film Lionheart in 2019 to represent Nigeria in the Best International Feature Film category of the 2020 Oscars. It was the first Nigerian film ever to be submitted to the Oscars.

The Oscar submission was subsequently cancelled due to its failure to meet the language criteria. The majority of the conversation in the movie is spoken in English. Nonetheless, since 2006, the Oscar regulations have stipulated that films that qualify must feature a “Predominantly non-English dialogue track.” The goal of this action was to provide more platforms for films with a multicultural cast.

“If all the aforementioned prayers are not met within fourteen working days, the State Executive Council of NANNM will have no option than to direct her members to proceed on indefinite strike till when all these demands are met,” the council maintained.

President Bola Tinubu is set to commission three critical gas infrastructure projects being undertaken by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and partners.

The commissioning is in line with the president’s commitment to significantly leverage gas to grow the economy.

The projects support the federal government’s effort to grow value from the nation’s gas assets while eliminating gas flaring.

The delivery of the projects was accelerated from the inception of the administration in keeping with the overall objective of deepening domestic gas supply as a critical enabler for economic prosperity.

THE PROJECTS
The projects lined up for commissioning are:

(1) AHL Gas Processing Plant 2 (GPP – 2) – 200mmscf/d

This project is an expansion to the Kwale Gas Processing Plant (GPP – 1), which currently supplies about 130MMscf/d of gas to the domestic market. The processing plant is designed to process 200MMscf/d of rich gas and deliver lean gas through the OB3 Gas Pipeline. This additional gas supply will support further rapid industrialization of Nigeria. The plant will also produce about 160,000 MTPA of Propane and 100,000 MTPA of Butane, which will reduce the dependency on LPG Imports. The AHL Gas Plant is being developed by AHL Limited, an incorporated Joint Venture owned by NNPC Limited and SEEPCO.

(2) ANOH Gas Processing Plant (AGPC) – 300MMscf/d

The ANOH gas plant is an integrated 300MMscf/d capacity gas processing plant designed to process non-associated gas from the Assa North-Ohaji South field in Imo State. The plant will produce dry gas, condensate, and LPG. The gas from ANOH gas plant will significantly increase domestic gas supply, leading to increased power generation and accelerated industrialization. The ANOH Gas Plant is being developed by ANOH Gas Processing Company, an incorporated Joint Venture owned by NNPC Limited and Seplat Energy Plc on a 50-50 basis.

(3) ANOH-OB3 CTMS Gas Pipeline Project

The project involves the engineering, procurement, and construction of 36”x23.3km ANOH-OB3 Project. The Transmission Gas Pipeline will evacuate dry gas from the Assa North-Ohaji South (ANOH) primary treatment facility (PTF) to OB3 Custody Transfer Metering Station (CTMS) for delivery into the OB3 pipeline system. About 600MMscf/d is estimated to be available from ate 2 x 300MMscf/d capacity gas processing production trains from AGPC & SPDC JV.

When commissioned, the projects will increase gas supply to the domestic market by approximately 500mmscf/d, creating a better investment climate and promoting balanced economic growth cumulatively.

15  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Woman Left Shocked After Visiting A Hospital For A Scan Only To Be Told That She's Already Dead on: 3-05-2024 04:51 PM

A woman was left shocked when she turned up to a hospital scan only to be told by staff that her records showed that she was already ‘’dead.''

Susan Johnson from Scarborough was left 'shaking by a leaf' after staff at the Bridlington Hospital in Yorkshire told her their records showed she'd been dead for four months.

The incident left Susan, 62, a retired housekeeper, baffled that her husband Bob needed to bring her a strong coffee to help calm her nerves.

The mother-of-two told BBC News: 'I gave them my letter and their first words were, "ooh you're dead".

'I said, "pardon?". I was in shock.

'Then they put something on the computer so I could have the scan and then they just said, "bye" and that's it.'

It is unclear how the mistake happened as when Susan contacted her GP, they told her that the mistake had been fixed.

However, when she contacted the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the call handler told her she was still marked as already dead on the system.

'On the computer you're dead,' she was told. Susan then informed her she couldn't be dead as she was on the phone and talking.

The error meant that Susan's carer's allowance for looking after her disabled husband Bob briefly stopped, though this has now been fixed.

She said she shut down completely after the news and said there was nobody to talk to about the mistake.

Scarborough Medical Group told the BBC they'd received an electronic instruction about the 'death' from Primary Care Support England (PCSE).

Susan is concentrating on her hobbies of gardening and knitting as she recovers from the shock.

An NHS spokesperson said: 'We are aware of an issue involving a civil death registration being incorrectly recorded against a patient’s medical record.

'This was removed within 24 hours of it being reported to us in March 2023 and the patient was re-registered by their GP.

'We would encourage the patient to contact us directly so we can explain further.'

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has said the state under his leadership, is the turn of the masses to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

Otti, who made the declaration while hosting a delegation of Course 17, Syndicate 2 of the National Institute for Security Studies, Abuja, at Government House Umuahia, said he was on a mission to make the masses and not just a handful of privileged politicians, have a taste of good governance.

He said politicians who have presided over the affairs of the state since the return of democracy in 1999, have helped themselves enough with the common patrimony.

The Governor told his audience that his recent decision to wipe off the backlog of pension arrears owed retirees since 2014, was a demonstration of his passion for the masses, who had been shortchanged by the ruling elite.

He said, “never again shall Abia pensioners be owed their pension.”

He added that he had also directed that they be paid along with workers on the 28th of every month, a directive, he affirmed, had taken effect from April.

“This is the people’s time, politicians have helped themselves enough for the past 24 years”, Otti added.

18  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Just In: Protesters Storm EFCC Office, Demand Reopening Of Matawalle’s Case on: 3-05-2024 04:30 PM

Protesters on Friday stormed the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in Abuja, demanding the commission to reopen the investigations of a former Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle.

The EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, who received the protest letter on behalf of the Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, assured the protesters that the commission would pursue corruption cases to a logical conclusion.

Recall that Vanguard had reported how a Federal High Court sitting in Sokoto had dismissed a suit filed by Matawalle over ownership of official vehicles he took away on leaving office last May.

In June, 2023, the police raided Matawalle’s residences and seized the vehicles as ordered by the court.

A statement on Monday by Governor Dauda Lawal’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said that the Federal High Court rejected Bello Matawalle’s claims over the ownership of the official vehicles.

According to him, the former governor and his cabinet members had taken away all official vehicles belonging to the state government, leaving the present administration with nothing to use.

The statement said,
Quote
“Recall that in June, the Zamfara State government gave the former Governor and his deputy five working days to return all official vehicles taken away.

“All demands for the return of the said vehicles proved abortive, and as a result, the Zamfara State government resorted to obtaining a court order to retrieve them.

“In pursuit of that order, a total of over 50 vehicles were recovered by the police. “After the vehicles were recovered, Bello Matawalle quickly rushed to the Federal High Court in Gusau. “The court granted an order for the cars to be returned to him.

“Additionally, he filed a separate suit at the same court seeking to enforce his fundamental right to own property, including the vehicles in question.

“The Zamfara State Government requested the transfer of the case to another jurisdiction of the Federal High Court. “The Federal High Court of Nigeria, Sokoto Judicial Division, dismissed the matter on Friday.

“The court refused the reliefs sought by Bello Matawalle and rejected his claim to the ownership of the official vehicles.

“As a result, the vehicles are still considered the property of the Zamfara State government.

“Our government is committed to recovering all that rightfully belongs to the people through an all-encompassing rescue mission that will leave no stone unturned.

“The judgment by the Federal High Court will encourage us to ensure that justice prevails and all perpetrators of financial banditry in Zamfara are brought to book.”
