Six men have been sentenced to 140 years imprisonment by an Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division for conspiracy, robbery and receiving stolen properties.

Four of the convicts were sentenced to 21 years each for robbery and seven years each for conspiracy, the remaining two were jailed for 14 years each for receiving stolen properties.

The defendants, Lateef Bamisile (31), Omodara Sanya (32), Lasisi Talabi (27), Omojola Damilare (30), Adamu Mohammed (39) and Abubakar Garuba (52) were arraigned on August  31, 2022 on five counts bordering on conspiracy, attempt to murder, robbery and receiving stolen property, contrary to Sections 421, 241, 312(2)(b) and 343 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

According to the charge, “The defendants on February 13, April 11, May  4, May 10 and May 17 in 2022, did conspire to rob Iji Taiwo, Akinyemi Sunday and Ajayi Sunday of their Bajaj motorcycles and attempted to murder the victims

“Also, on May 17, 2022, Adamu Mohammed and Abubakar Garba received two stolen Bajaj motorcycles each from Lateef Bamisile, all in Ado Ekiti within the jurisdiction of this honourable court. As of the time of the incidents, they were armed with sticks, cutlasses and axes.”

In his statement to the police, one of the victims said he conveyed one of the defendants from the Oke-Ila area to a place near the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti

“When we got there, he asked me to wait for him, he pretended to be knocking at the gate. Suddenly, a man appeared from behind with a cutlass, he ordered me to come down. When I refused, he gave me a machete cut on my neck, head, hand and back. When I fell, the passenger joined him and they escaped with my motorcycle,” he said.

The prosecutor, Oluwaseun Olasanmi, called nine witnesses and tendered defendants’ statements, motorcycles particulars and bond to produce, as exhibits.

The defendants, who spoke through their respective lawyers, called no witnesses.

In his judgment on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi said, “Going through the confessional statement of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants, we could see a trend of a series of robberies committed by them on motorcycles by applying pepper on their eyes and sometimes threatening with a cutlass.”

“It is trite that the court can convict on the confessional statement of an accused. Subsequently, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants are guilty of conspiracy and they are hereby sentenced to seven years imprisonment each and 21 years imprisonment each for robbery. The 5th and 6th defendants, Adamu Mohammed and Abubakar Garba, are found guilty of receiving stolen motorcycles. They are accordingly sentenced to 14 years imprisonment each,”
the judge pronounced.
62  Forum / The Buzz Central / Footballer, Odion Ighalo Reveals How Money Took Him To Saudi Arabia on: 24-04-2024 04:20 PM

Odion Ighalo, former Nigeria International and a striker for the Super Eagles, has stated that the primary motivation for him and Cristiano Ronaldo to play in the Saudi Arabian league is financial.

However, several of these celebrities who relocated to Saudi Arabia hardly ever acknowledge that they joined the League for financial gain, despite the fact that they make hundreds of thousands of euros a year.

The Nigerian striker unashamedly disclosed in a recent interview that, unlike the majority, financial reasons were the primary motivator for him, Ronaldo, as well as the majority of the league’s foreign players, to make the switch to Saudi Arabia.

“I don’t know when God says stop, but I know it’s not going to be more than three years before I stop. I’ve played for passion all my life; I have to play for money now,” Ighalo told Oma TV as per Soccernet.ng. “I’m not one of those players who will say I am playing football for passion. I am playing for money; at the end of the day, it is about the money.

“See people that are going to Saudi Arabia, big players. Is Ronaldo still playing for passion? He has made more than 100 times what I have in my life, but he still went to Saudi Arabia. You want to tell me that is passion? No, it’s for money.

“It’s only when we Africans say it that they will say we like money. But these people don’t care; some of them want to be the highest paid and all that.”

Following his six-month loan to Manchester United, Ighalo moved to Shanghai on a one-year deal. The 34-year-old then finalised his transfer to Al Shabbab, where he began receiving €170,000.

Two years later, Portuguese sensation Ronaldo signed a record-breaking three-year contract worth €210.704 million to join Al Nassr, another Saudi Arabian team. That indicated that players from mainstream Europe were joining the rest of the pack.

Ighalo joined the Saudi League at the same time when the league was receiving financial reinforcements and an upgrade.

After playing for Watford, Lyn, Udinese, Granada, and Cesena, the Super Eagles star left mainstream Europe in 2017 to join the Saudi Arabian club Chang Chung Yatai. The Nigerian striker was a valuable asset for English club Watford, as he helped them advance from the English Championship to the Premier League.

In his 100 appearances for the Hawks, Ighalo scored 40 goals and provided 11 assists, guaranteeing that when he transferred to Chang Chung Yatai, he would earn a weekly wage of €200,000. The Nigerian striker transferred to Shanghai Shenhua, another Chinese team, two years later, when he was paid a comparable sum.

Ighalo is presently at Al Wehda, where, in 26 club games, he has scored 12 goals. With 29 goals this season, Ronaldo is currently 17 goals ahead of him.
63  Forum / Politics / "President Tinubu Will Break 60-Year Power Jinx" - Power Minister, Adelabu Assures on: 24-04-2024 04:16 PM

Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has revealed that the Bola Tinubu administration is committed to breaking the 60 year crisis afflicting the power sector.

Adelabu noted that the steps his Ministry is taking are in the right direction and it is only a little time before the crisis will be over.

This was seen in a post shared on the X handle of Tinubu's Special Adviser Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday, April 23.

The post reads in part: "Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu said the Bola Tinubu administration is committed to breaking the 60 year  jinx bedeviling the power sector.

"The minister stated this when he received the Senate Committee on Power led by its Chairman, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe who visited the Ministry for its familiarization/oversight function recently in the Ministry's headquarters in Abuja.

Adelabu said, "The steps we are taking in the Ministry of Power is in the right direction, it is only a little time, this crisis will be over.

"We just need to endure and persevere just as in the issue of road repairs and reconstructions,  commuters suffer during such  period, some even sleep on the road due to road closures or diversions but at the end, commuters enjoy smooth and timely rides to their destination when the work is done.

“This is the case in power. The issues have been identified and we need more patience and perseverance to get to our eldorado."

In what will come across as a really heartbreaking development, four friends have died in an auto crash in Akwa Ibom.

It was gathered that the accident occurred on Sunday night, April 22, 2024 along Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road.

Details of the incident are still sketchy at the time of filing this report but it was gathered that the victims identified as Abasiama Charles and Idara Udo, died alongside their girlfriends.

Facebook user, Abasi Ifreke Eshiet, who confirmed the incident wrote: “Two of my brothers and girlfriends died in accident last night."

Meanwhile, friends have taken to Facebook to mourn them.

“Abasiam, my brother, I don't understand. Just last week, You offered me palm wine twice at the Ikot Ekpene Club and once at my GRA residency in Ikot Ekpene,” one Yaknno Afangide wrote.

"We had shared these moments together. Just yesterday, you invited me to my local church, and I gave you an invitation to represent me because I wouldn't be there. You even asked our Reverend to pray with me. You accompanied me to my late parents' compound in the village, where we exchanged pleasantries, and I even sent you money to cover church expenses.

“You never said it was goodbye. Last night, I couldn't sleep, which is unusual for me. When I woke up, my loyal aide and brother, Golden Samuel , told me a story that I didn't want to believe—it couldn't be you. But it was you. I was headed to the airport to catch my flight to Abuja when the Emaeyak Nnah Ekiko ringed me. He said wanted me to ensure that the police would release your body for burial, I did the needful...... but why? This was never our plan. My brother, I'm bitter and heartbroken. But only God knows why this happened. Rest in peace, Abasiam. You will be missed, and your memory will always be with me.”

65  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Gunmen Reportedly Kill Nasarawa Monarch’s Police Escort, Abduct Wife, Aide on: 24-04-2024 02:57 PM

Gunmen have reportedly attacked Nakera community in Nasarawa State's Wamba Local Government Area on Sunday night, resulting in the alleged killing of a police officer assigned to the traditional ruler of the area.

Arewa PUNCH investigations reveal that during the attack on the palace of the Chu Buh, Mondeh Chagga, which occured between 10:30 to 11:00 pm, the gunmen also abducted his wife, Patience Tari and one of his aides, Kefas Shehu, to a yet to be identified location.

A resident of the community, who simply identified himself as Deyen Oriku, told our correspondent that the gunmen who stormed the palace of the monarch in their large number, shot sporadically into the air while carrying out their nefarious activities.

Oriku lamented that security threats in the community had heightened in the past six months despite several pleas for the deployment of more security personnel to the area.

“The level of insecurity in the entire Wamba LGA is becoming unbearable. Kidnapping for ransom has now become the order of the day,” he stated.

Explaining further, he narrated, “On Sunday when the gunmen attacked the community, they came in their numbers and they were shooting in several directions, but because it was late at night, many of us (residents) remained inside our houses. It was later that night that we heard about the death of the policeman and the kidnap of two people from the monarch’s house.

“We heard that the monarch was able to escape during the attack with the help of some of the villagers. Also, we were told that the kidnappers went away with the killed policeman’s rifle.

“It was after the attack that the military arrived in the community to render security assistance to us. By then, the armed men had already gone very far with their victims because it was close to one hour after the operation before they (military) came.’’

“I am appealing to the Nasarawa State Government to urgently look into the matter of insecurity in communities across Wamba LGA with a view to proffering a lasting solution to the steady attacks by bandits,
” Oriku pointed out.

Meanwhile, Arewa PUNCH, on Monday, gathered that the kidnappers have reached out to the family, demanding a N20 million ransom for their release.

A family source disclosed, “The kidnappers are now demanding a whopping sum of N20 million before they would be released from captivity.

“The community has been thrown into confusion since they were kidnapped because most people here are farmers. Now that they (kidnappers) are requesting that huge amount of money, I really don’t know what we will do about the matter.

“At this moment, we need the help of the state government and other good-spirited Nigerians to come to our aide because we do not have the resources to pay for their release,”
the family source further told Arewa PUNCH.

Our correspondent recalls that gunmen had invaded the community in February, during which period  a youth leader of the community and two other residents were kidnapped for ransom.

Confirming the incident to Arewa PUNCH in Lafia on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Ramhan Nansel, commiserated with the people of the area over the unfortunate incident.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Umar Nadada, had directed a thorough investigation into the matter with a view to rescuing the kidnapped victims unhurt and to ensure that normalcy returns to the community.

“The incident happened last night (Sunday), and the command has launched an investigation into the case. Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the dastardly act,” Nansel added.
66  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Nigerian Software Engineer, Chukwudi Rape 13Yr Old Girl On Children’s Day In Lagos on: 24-04-2024 02:52 PM

Chukwudi Anyanwu, a 32-year-old software engineer, a Nigerian man who had unlawful s*xual intercourse with his neighbour’s 13-year-old daughter on Children’s Day, 2021, has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

He was convicted and sentenced  jail by Justice Rahman Oshodi of an Ikeja S*xual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday.

The judge while delivering the judgment held that the prosecution was able to prove the ingredient of defilement of a minor against Anyanwu.

He held that the evidence of the survivor was corroborated by the medical report and that of her guardian (name withheld).

The judge disregarded the testimonies of two police officers, ASP Iyabo Dawodu with AP number 055567 and Inspector Rebecca Osola-Jacob, who were listed on the prosecution witness list, saying they gave evidence for the defence instead of the prosecution which showed that their testimonies were tainted.

Justice Oshodi also held that the alibi and the issue of extortion which the convict relied on did not hold water.

According to him, the evidence presented in court against the convict had shown that he took advantage of the vulnerable 13-year-old girl who was living in the same compound as him.

He said the convict exploited his position of familiarity and authority to lure the survivor into his room on Children’s Day, 2021, and subjected her to the harrowing ordeal of s*xual abuse.

The judge also said the convict’s action had undoubtedly inflicted deep psychological wounds that might take a lifetime to heal.

“You have shown a troubling lack of integrity and remorse throughout the proceedings and when you were confronted by the victim’s guardian about the heinous act, you initially denied any wrongdoing.

“However, when the young brave victim repeated the details of your abuse in your presence, you resorted to begging for forgiveness, claiming it was the work of the devil.

“This attempt to evade responsibility and downplay the severity of your action is reprehensible.

The judge observed that even more concerning was that the convict expressed his intention to bribe the police to suppress the case and protect his reputation.

“This blatant disregard for the law and attempt to pervert the course of justice is a serious aggravating factor that cannot be overlooked,” Oshodi said.

The judge further held that the impact of the convict’s actions on the survivor could not be overstated as he had robbed her of her innocence, shattered her trust and left her with deep emotional scars.

He said that the court must ensure that justice was served and that society received a clear message that such reprehensible acts would not be tolerated.

He said:
Quote
“I hope this sentence brings some measure of closure and helps her on the path of healing.

“In line with the severe nature of the offence, the breach of trust involved, your lack of remorse, your attempt to pervert the course of justice and the long-lasting impact on the victim, I now sentence you, Chukwudi Anyanwu, to the mandatory life sentence under Section 137 of the Criminal Law (Supra).

“This sentence reflects the gravity of your actions and the need to protect vulnerable members of our society from predatory individuals like yourself.

“During your time in the custodial centre, I hope you reflect on the immense harm you have caused and take steps towards rehabilitation.”

The state counsel, led by Mr Babajide Boye, called three witnesses, the survivor, the survivor’s guardian and a medical doctor while the defence called the two police officers as witnesses.

According to the prosecution, the convict committed the offence on May 27, 2021, on Thomas Animashaun Street, Aguda, Surulere, Lagos State.

Traders at Ekiosa Market in Benin City, Edo State, have begun tallying their losses in the wake of the fire that engulfed a section of the market in the early hours of Tuesday.

Daily Post reports that the market, located by Third Junction, Murtala Muhammed Way, has about 20 shops housing various items estimated to be billions of naira, destroyed by the inferno.

One of the victims, identified as Sani Yakubu, said the fire started between 1:30 am and 2 am.

Yakubu, who is also the caretaker of the building, estimated that traders lost goods worth billions of naira in the fire.

According to him, the fire started between 1:30 am and 2 am, and we don’t know the cause of the fire.

“I was at home when they called me that the building was on fire, and that they could not save their goods as the whole shops were on fire.

“Traders and Bureau De Change operators have shops here. Besides, the goods, dollars, euros, and other international as well as local currencies were burnt to ashes in the fire.

“Nobody took anything out of their shops, provisions, electronic gadgets, generators were destroyed. I can say that goods worth billions of naira were lost to the fire. Our hope is in God, and we believe it is an act of God,”
he said.

Another trader, Ugochinyere Francis, lamented that she lost over a million in the inferno that razed the shops.

“We couldn’t do anything when we came because the flame was much, that no one could go near it. I lost over a million naira, but I don’t want to cry, and I know God will take control.

“I have a shop here, and my mother also has a shop. I sell cosmetics and articles. They called me at about 2 am that our shops were on fire, but before we could reach there, the fire had already enveloped the whole shop. It was such that no one could go near,”
she added.

She, however, appealed to governments to come to their aid as their means of livelihood have been destroyed.

Others who also spoke on the development, however, called on the state government to assist them in starting a new life.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has declared the reopening of Runway 18L/36R at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. This follows a temporary closure prompted by a Dana Air plane skidding off the runway on Tuesday.

This was disclosed in a press release signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN, Obiageli Orah, on Wednesday.

The statement read, “The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria is pleased to notify the public and all stakeholders that Runway 18L/36R was reopened for flight operations at 19:58hrs.

“This development follows the earlier closure of the runway this morning due to an incident involving a Dana Air aircraft, with registration number 5N-BKI, which overshot the runway during its landing sequence.

“Prompt actions were taken by our emergency response team to evacuate and recover the aircraft from the site. Subsequently, comprehensive clearing operations were conducted to ensure the runway was free of any Foreign Object Debris that could impede flight safety,
Orah added.

According to the statement, the FAAN Operations Division and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency have jointly inspected the runway surface and deemed it safe for the resumption of operations.

FAAN acknowledged that the area affected by the overshoot was significantly muddy, necessitating extensive cleaning efforts to restore safety.

“A concerted effort was made for the thorough and efficient cleaning of the area to facilitate the swift resumption of operations on Runway 18L/36R,” she said.

Orah apologised for any inconvenience caused, stating, “Ensuring the safety and security of our passengers, staff, and airport operations remains our top priority.

“FAAN is committed to providing a safe, secure, and efficient air transport environment for all users of our airports.

“FAAN wishes to express its gratitude to the travelling public, our airline partners, and all stakeholders for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during the temporary closure. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this incident may have caused,”

70  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / "If Yahaya Bello Is Not Prosecuted, I’ll Resign" — Olukoyede Vows on: 24-04-2024 02:34 PM

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, on Tuesday, vowed to resign should Yahaya Bello, former Governor of Kogi State, is not prosecuted for his financial crimes.

The EFCC is prosecuting Bello on 19 counts bordering on alleged money laundering and misappropriation of public funds to the tune of N80.2 billion.

Olukoyede who spoke in Abuja during an interactive session with media executives said “If I do not personally oversee the completion of the investigation regarding Yahaya Bello, I will tender my resignation as the EFCC Chair.”

He furthered that everyone involved in obstructing Bello’s arrest from his Abuja residence will face the full wrath of the law.

According to him, he invited Bello to his office for a more “respectful and dignified” interrogation, but the ex-governor wanted EFCC operatives to grill him in his village instead.

Quote
“I called Yahaya Bello, as a serving governor, to come to my office to clear himself. I shouldn’t have done that.

“But he said because a certain senator has planted over 100 journalists in my office, he would not come.

“I told him that he would be allowed to use my private gate to give him a cover, but he said my men should come to his village to interrogate him,” he said.

The EFCC, he restated, did not violate any law while trying to arrest the former governor from his residence.

“Rather, we have obeyed the law. I inherited the case and I didn’t create it. Why has he not submitted himself to the law?

“I have arraigned two past governors who have been granted bail now — Willie Obiano and Abdulfatah Ahmed.

“We would have gone after Bello since January but we waited for the court order.

“As early as 7 am, my gallant men were there. Over 50 of them. They mounted surveillance.

“We met over 30 armed policemen there. We would have exchanged fire and there would have been casualties.

“My men were about to move in when the governor of Kogi drove in and they later changed the narrative,”
he added.

Olukoyede noted that all those who have dipped their hands into the nation’s coffers would be investigated and prosecuted.

“If I can do Obiano, Abdulfatah Ahmed and Chief Olu Agunloye, my kinsman, why not Yahaya Bello?” he queried .

In Houston, Texas, two 21-year-old parents, Angelina Belinda Calderon and Fernando Vega, have been accused of beating their five-week-old twin girls to de3th in a horrific and tragic incident.

The infants, Massail and Mirena Vega, suffered multiple bruises and fractures, indicating a violent assault. Calderon and Vega are facing charges of injury to a child-serious bodily injury after autopsy results confirmed the extent of the twins’ injuries.

The discovery was made by Houston police responding to an emergency call at the family’s home. Vega claimed he found the babies unresponsive in their crib after returning from dropping his mother off at work. Attempts to revive the infants were unsuccessful.

Pathologist Dr. Jesus Rico revealed that the twins had sustained intentional injuries, including bruises, fractures, and signs of malnourishment. The cause of death was determined to be homicide due to blunt force trauma.

Despite claims of innocence from Calderon’s family, evidence suggests otherwise. Family members have hinted at a history of abuse by Vega towards Calderon. Both parents remain in custody on high bonds as they await further legal proceedings.

The community has been shocked and saddened by this tragic event, highlighting the importance of protecting the most vulnerable among us.
73  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / How German Police Arrest 11 Nigerians Over Dating Scam on: 24-04-2024 02:13 PM

German police said Wednesday they had arrested 11 suspected members of a Nigerian mafia group behind a large-scale dating scam.

The Black Axe gang was involved internationally in “multiple areas of criminal activity”, with a focus in Germany on dating scams and money-laundering, Bavarian police said in a statement.

The dating trick was a “modern form of marriage fraud”, police said.

“Using false identities, the fraudsters for example signalled their intention to marry and in the course of further contact repeatedly demand money under various pretexts,” police said.

The money was subsequently transferred to Black Axe in Nigeria “via financial agents”, authorities said.

In the process, the gang used a “commodity-based money laundering” scheme where products, often with a seeming “charitable purpose” were bought and delivered to Nigeria.

Some 450 cases of romance scamming had been reported in the region of Bavaria in 2023 alone, with the damages rising to 5.3 million euros ($5.7 million), police said.

The suspects, who all held Nigerian citizenship and were aged between 29 and 53, were arrested in nationwide raids on Tuesday.

Law enforcement swooped on 19 properties, including both homes and asylum shelters, police said.

The Black Axe gang had “strict hierarchical structures under leadership in Nigeria” operating different territorial units, police said.

The group had a “significant influence” on politics and public administrations, in particular in Nigeria.

Globally, the gang’s main areas of operation were “human-trafficking, fraud, money-laundering, prostitution and drug-trafficking”.

Black Axe operated under the cover of the Neo Black Movement of Africa, an ostensibly charitable organisation used as “camouflage” for the gang’s structures.

The action against Black Axe was the first of its kind in Germany, police said.

Isabella Idibia, the eldest daughter of Nigerian music legend, 2Baba, and his wife, Annie Idibia, has expressed her displeasure over the way her parents were portrayed in the 2022 South African reality show, ‘Young, Famous and African.’

In the first and second seasons of the reality show, Annie was portrayed as a nagging wife who continues to endure her abusive marriage despite her husband, 2Baba boldly declaring to other stars on the show in the presence of his wife that “men are wired to cheat.”

In a video message shared via her social media handle recently, Isabella said the way her parents were portrayed in the reality show was “so wrong.”

She insisted that it wasn’t the “best image and it wasn’t completely accurate.”

She said, “I think the way my parents were portrayed in ‘Young, Famous and African’ is just so wrong.

“Whenever I tried to back my parents up that that is not what happened, everyone would be like, ‘How would you know? You are still a child.’ How would you know? You are not in my family. Your knowledge is based on stuff that you see on social media.

“I know it because I’ve been in the household with my parents. I can’t change everyone’s perspective on social media because people on social media would always think what people on social media want to think. But honestly, they would never know the actual true story of anything in my family or anything that has happened before I was even born.

“The way my parents were portrayed in ‘Young, Famous and African’ wasn’t the best image and wasn’t completely accurate.”

A coalition of anticorruption groups under the platform of the Anti-Corruption and Research-based Data Initiative (ARDI) has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to follow due express in the prosecution of the former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.

Bello is currently under investigation over alleged embezzlement of a whooping sum of N80.2 billion. Addressing reporters yesterday in Abuja, Chief John Ozigbo, said the coalition followed with keen interest the current impasse between the anti-graft agency and Bello, which led to the raid on his private residence in Abuja.

According to Ozigbo, the group hinged their concern on the need for both parties to work within the ambit of the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to avoid subjecting the war on corruption in this country to further odium in the eyes of right-thinking people, as well as do our bit to avert the ongoing and needless overheating of our polity.
