21183  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / NBA Vice Chairman, David Aigbefoh Calls Out FG To Increase Security Surveillance in FCT on: 23-05-2021 03:17 PM

Mr David Aigbefoh the Vice-Chairman Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Gwagwalada Branch Abuja, has called for increased security surveillance in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Aigbefoh made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), following intelligence reports recently, that suspected terrorists were planning to attack selected targets in the FCT,

The barrister said that there was an urgent need for security agencies to step up surveillance, especially aerial surveillance with the use of drones, to secure the life and property of the citizenry.

According to him, there was a need for everyone to be always security conscious, to guard against the sudden wanton destruction of lives and property.

Quote
“A 2020 report by SB Morgen, observed that the FCT ranked 11th among the places where abductions have been recorded.

“There is evidence that some of the perpetrators responsible for Kaduna state’s crime have extended their operations to the Federal Capital.

“The report also stated that at least 18.84 million dollars was paid as ransoms to various kidnappers across the country in 2020.

“Although, the FCT arguably remains the safest part of Nigeria by virtue of being the seat of power.

“Nevertheless, there should be more deployment of police patrol teams, at strategic locations including keffi, Lokoja-Abuja Road, up to Gwagwalada, Tungan Maje, Zuba and beyond, to ensure efficient and effective surveillance of the FCT and other states in the country,”
he said.

However, he urged the security agencies to close ranks and work in synergy among themselves to strengthen security operations in the FCT.

He added that the residents can also do well by reporting any suspicious person or persons or even activities in and around their neighbourhoods, to the nearest police station.

Quote
“More police Divisional Headquarters should be established, especially in vulnerable communities like Tungan Maje, in the FCT where insecurity has become worrisome lately.

“As a matter of fact, if it had not been for the swift intervention of the Commissioner of Police by the deployment of the Police Special Squad, the crime rate would have increased terribly.

“But then, security is everybody’s concern, so all hands should be on deck to ensure the protection of lives and property in all the communities in and around the Federal Capital Territory FCT, Abuja,”
he said.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Prof Abayomi Fashina, has concluded arrangements for the reinstatement of the suspended Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) of the institution, Dr. Gabriel Omonijo, who was suspended indefinitely in 2019.

The VC also advised his colleagues across the country to think outside the box to be able to fund their universities, saying no institution of learning can develop with sole and absolute reliance on money from the government.

On the cases of kidnapping and cult killing in some schools of higher learning of recent, Fashina said the university is investing in intelligence gathering and digital gadgets to monitor the campus and apprehend evildoers before perpetrating their nefarious activities.

Fashina spoke in Oye Ekiti, headquarters of Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State, on Saturday during an event marking his 100 days in office.

The VC said: “As part of our efforts to restore orderliness and peace, we are bringing back Dr. Omonijo and Mr. Seun Odedeji who were suspended on accounts of their union activities during the time of my predecessor. We have promised this and we have opted for out of court settlement”.

On how best to fund any university, he said: ” God is the one bankrolling us. If you think outside the box, you will do many things. We are going into partnerships with bodies, organisations and well-meaning individuals for them to invest here. We are also using our vast human resources to achieve results.

“We are also blocking leakages to be able to raise our IGR and these have been paying off”.

Fashina said the university is deploying digital equipment and partnering security agencies, host community and Students’ Union, to fish out potential cultists to avert disruption of activities and perpetration of killings by unruly students.

He said the government of Nigeria has not been able to achieve food security status despite its human and material resources because it pays lip service to agriculture.

“Nigeria only pays lip service to agriculture. We only do farming with our mouths. That is why we can’t produce what we eat.

“We have provided modern agriculture implements in the faculty of agriculture. We are putting our students into cropping with the hope to empower them after graduation. Students must learn the skills for survival. Agriculture has a lot of value chain, to me, farming is a way of life”.

The VC said he would place a high premium on the welfare of workers by ensuring timely promotion, payment of salaries and benefits, providing an affordable transport system and security of students and staff.

Fashina, who also inaugurated some projects, promised to provide modern structures and road networks to connect the school, give it aesthetic value and increase the quality of education within the next one year.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has dismissed the claim making the rounds of his alleged support for the agitation for the Yoruba nation.

Akeredolu, who stated that agitators of the Yoruba nation are on their own, emphasized that he would never be in support of secessionists.

The Governor was reacting to the comment made by Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, that the agitation for the Yoruba nation was being backed by South-West Governors.

Igboho had stated this on Saturday at the palace of the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi, where he said Akeredolu gave the nod for the rally for the actualization of Yoruba nation to hold in Akure, the state capital.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Richard Olatunde, it was disclosed that the rally which was allowed to hold was due to the Akeredolu’s recognition of the right of individuals and groups to hold peaceful rallies, adding the move “must not be misconstrued to mean support for secessionist agenda and or balkanization of the nation. Far from it.”

While stressing that he believed in a united and indivisible Nigeria, Akeredolu maintained that the zeal, leadership and candour displayed by him was for a just and fair Nigeria which according to him is altruistic and borne out of patriotism for the Nation as well as love for his people, the Yoruba ethnic nationality.

He added that “it is important, therefore, to state without any equivocation that the Yoruba Nation secessionist promoters do not enjoy any lending hand in Governor Akeredolu.”

Prof Bolaji Owasanoye, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has stated that foreign countries should return looted funds with interest.

Owasanoye who said this at the International Conference on IFFs and Asset Recovery held at the ICPC Headquarters in Abuja, further revealed that the Federal Government of Nigeria is currently reviewing legacy transactions in oil and gas, tax investments and the use of waivers in Nigeria in order to curb Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs).

The ICPC boss also told foreign beneficiaries of IFFs to deduct loans to African countries from the illegal funds in their possessions, and return the outstanding amount with interests to the continent.

He Said;

Quote
“Africa is the biggest victim of IFFs. If you evaluate what we have lost as a continent against what African counties owe, Africa should be a net creditor to the world. They can decide to deduct the loans given to African countries from all the money taken from the continent, there will still be a substantial amount to return to Africa.

“The money should also be returned with interests as they have been in use over there. The money should be placed in an Escrow account, and a regional development bank that knows how to manage money should be in charge of such funds.

“We are reviewing the legacy transaction in oil and gas, tax investments and the use of waivers in Nigeria to close loopholes that facilitate IFFs. For instance, a lot of damage can be done through confidential clauses in loans, oil and gas contracts, and others. The review will prevent dodgy politicians from taking money out.”

21200  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Group Drags Kaduna Gov. El-Rufai Over His Actions Against Peaceful Protesters In The State on: 20-05-2021 08:30 PM

The Joint Action Front (JAF) has hailed the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for the resistance in the ongoing 5-day warning strike aimed to compel the Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai to reverse his alleged anti-people and anti-labour policies of sacking of over 30,000 workers in the past five years.

JAF in a statement signed by its Chairperson, Dr. Dipo Fashina and Secretary, Comrade Abiodun Aremu condemned the different attacks unleashed against peaceful protesters and defenseless workers since the commencement of the strike action.

The group said El-Rufai should be held responsible, declaring him as a criminal that should be publicly prosecuted.

The statement called in El-Rufai to "reverse his anti-people and anti-labour policies of sacking of over 30,000 workers, in the past five years, with the recent illegal sacking of 4,000 workers being the latest".

It noted that rather than respond to the "legitimate and popular demands of the NLC and the affected workers", the governor adored the "destructive and intransigence stance of violent repression of the peaceful protests, that commenced two days ago and which have been successful with the shutdown of work services and activities in Kaduna state".

It added that the governor
Quote
"should be held responsible for the current state of anarchy he is bent on foisting in the state by pitching other categories of workers and working people against workers in the services of the Kaduna State Government, based on his malicious and spurious propaganda of the shares of revenues in the state".

“JAF enjoins the NLC, the sacked workers and the entire Nigerian workers not to be deterred by the threat of further attacks and illegal imposition of measures being recklessly pronounced by Governor Hell Rufai, but rather, the leadership of the NLC should be encouraged to call an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in view of a declaration of nationwide strike of the working people and oppressed masses.

“JAF wants to reiterate that the demand by the NLC for the unconditional recall of all the over 30,000 (recently and before) sacked workers should be in focus, in addition, to insisting on the full implementation of the national minimum wage and the reversal of all anti-labour policies and anti-poor measures in Kaduna State,"
it said.

It urged Nigerians to disregard the "desperate and illegal declaration of the NLC President Ayuba Wabba wanted by the state governor," saying he should ordinarily not have occupied a public office.

“Equally, JAF demands that the Inspector General of Police and the Kaduna Commissioner of Police stand culpable and indicted for the degeneration of the peaceful protests by workers into violence. The police from documentary evidence available, rather than protect the peaceful protest from the Hell Rufai’s recruited thugs, joined forces with the thugs to destabilise the protests with their indiscrimate shootings, but for the large turnout of the organised mass of workers, whose courageous and commendable resistance defied and overcome the violence," it added.
