Former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has donated the sum of N75 million to the Rotary International, District 9110, Lagos, to help it fight polio in the country.
he former vice-president, who was the guest speaker at the dinner and dance ball organised by the Rotary International at Muson Centre, Lagos, linked the increase in polio cases in Nigeria to illiteracy and unwholesome religious beliefs, which according to him, had made it difficult for the disease to be eradicated.
He, however, urged the Federal Ministry of Health to do more in the area of information dissemination, as lives of many future leaders in the country were being destroyed by the disease, especially in the northern part of the country.
He commended the activities of the Rotary International in waging war against polio,  just as he advised the Federal Government to fire from all cylinders by providing social amenities, such as adequately furnished health centres in all rural areas in the country, saying this would help in checkmating the disease.
Quoting  the World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s) polio  statistics on  Nigeria, he disclosed that the country was one of the nations in the world where the disease was still prevalent, calling on well meaning Nigerians to assist government in combating the scourge of the disease.
