Two lawmakers, Senator Alkali Jafere and Senator Ayogu Eze clashed on Tuesday over alleged move to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan, the Nation reports.

According to the report, while Jajere, who represents Yobe South Senatorial District, said that Jonathan would be served impeachment notice when the Senate resumes plenary on 16 December, Eze, who represents Enugu North Senatorial District, was of the opinion that nothing of such was on the agenda of the Senate.

It was gathered that both Senators spoke with newsmen in Abuja today, Tuesday, 2 December, 2014, after the adjournment of Senate plenary till 16 December to allow Senators to participate in their party screening and primary elections.

Jafere stated that he is one of the Senators that had endorsed the impeachment notice.

The Yobe State lawmaker said that he is the fourth on the list of 63 Senators that signed the impeachment notice last week, while two others have signified interest to sign.

“I have signed the impeachment notice because there are impeachable offences against President Goodluck Jonathan.

“You are my colleagues and being a journalist who had practised journalism for 27 years, I know these things are not new.

“In 2011, this Senate approved N240billion as subsidy fund but the same government spent N1.7trillion which is a clear breach of the constitution, clear breach of the appropriation act.

“The business of government is to curtail excesses but this government has shown that it is incurably deficient in handling the situations in this country.

Sen. Alkali Jafere.

“That government cannot say it wants to continue. The President should have even resigned without waiting for him to be impeached.

“The duty of the legislature is to act as a check and balance because it is the most important symbol of democracy.

“If you don’t have the legislature, you don’t have democracy because every other arms of government exist even when there is no democracy. It is only the legislature that makes a democracy, a government.

“As at last week, 63 of us have signed up for the impeachment, my signature was the fourth, but I can confirm to you that we have 63 signatures but after the session today (yesterday), two people had called me and told me that they want to sign,” he said.

However, Eze insisted that there was no impeachment notice in the Senate.

The Enugu North lawmaker noted that impeachment of Jonathan was only in the imagination of those who were spreading the story.

Eze said: “There is no impeachment notice in the Senate.

“It is in the imagination of those who are writing about it and we challenge anybody who thinks that he can impeach the President to meet us on the floor.”

Also commenting on the plan to serve President Jonathan impeachment notice, Senator Sahaabi Yau (Zamfara North) warned that the Senate could ill afford the distraction associated with the impeachment process.

Meanwhile, the leader of South South Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos, Sunday Ekanem, has threatened the All Progressive Congress (APC) that there would be crisis in the polity if the plan orchestrated to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan scales through.

Ekanem gave the warning on Monday at the state Secretariat of Lagos PDP while talking with Daily Independent reporter.

It would be recalled that lawmakers on the platform of the APC were said not to be relenting in their pursuit to unseat President Goodluck Jonathan, as some of them were allegedly making frantic moves towards mobilizing their members and aggrieved Senators of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to ensure the purported impeachment plot against President Jonathan.

It was reported that the plot to impeach the President spread to the Senate, with a growing number of Senators said to be enthusiastic to team up with the Reps to get the President removed after  130 Reps signed to support the plot to remove Jonathan on Thursday, November 20, 2014.
