A fire yesterday destroyed 200 shops at Bulumkutu Market in Maiduguri, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

It was reported that the fire, which started around 5 a.m., did not record any human casualty and was put off after three hours by fire fighters.

Items lost to the fire include provisions, clothing materials, shoes, GSM phones and food stuffs.

A security guard at the market, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the fire started from a shop where petroleum products were kept.

“I was preparing to observe the early morning prayers when suddenly I heard an explosion and within a short time, the whole market was on fire,” he explained.

One of the victims, who owns a GSM phone shop, Musa Yerima, said all the items in the shop were valued at N500,000 had been consumed by the fire.

“I am stranded and don’t know where to start from because the money I used in purchasing the products was the only capital the family and I are living on,” he said, pleading, “government should urgently come to our aid.”

Another victim, Idris Modu, who sells clothing materials, said he lost about N1 million worth of goods in the incident. He called on well meaning individuals to assist him.

The Borno Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Isa Azare, who confirmed the incident, said the command would investigate the cause of the fire.
