According to Punch, the development was confirmed by Garus Gololo, National Coordinator of Miyietti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Benue state chapter.
It was also gathered that Gololo linked the herdsman’s death to the implementation of the anti-open grazing law which went into effect in Benue state on November 1 and led to the relocation of several herdsmen to other parts of the country. Gololo disclosed that Abdulkadire had gotten despondent after discovering that 200 out of his 500 cows had died where they were camped, while looking for a means to leave Benue State after the law was passed. The late herdsman who had 22 children, subsequently cried and jumped into the river. He stated: “The man killed himself simply because there was no place for his cows to graze. He was to relocate to the Awe LGA of Nasarawa state; but information got to us that the area was occupied and no herdsman or herdsmen should cross over to the area again. “We are calling on the federal government to intervene to quickly make provision for herdsmen in Benue State before they lose everything they have.” Gololo further disclosed that Fulani herdsmen had lost about 600 cows due to poor feeding and inaccessibility to water, since the anti-open grazing law went into effect. Moses Yamu, the Benue state police public relations officer, however stated that the suicide had not been reported to the command.

Meanwhile, it was previously reported that the Benue state government spoke about the importance of enforcing the newly enacted anti-open grazing law. An aide to the state governor, Tahav Argezua, highlighted the various deadly clashes recorded between herdsmen and farmers in the state, and stated that the law would bring about lasting peace between both groups. Argezua reminded critics of the law that Fulani herdsmen had been designated as the 4th most deadly terrorist group in the world and stressed that they had made threats which could not be ignored.
