Several high-profile public figures in Nigeria, including a former government minister and a Jonathan ex-aide have claimed President Muhammadu Buhari is dead and is being imitated by a man called “Jubril” “from Sudan”.

CrosscheckNigeria, a collaboration of newsrooms in Nigeria, comprising, among others, icirnigeria.org and The News Agency of Nigeria, has investigated this claim and found no evidence to support it.

The earliest mention of the claim of an impostor was in a Twitter post by user @sam_ezeh on September 3rd, 2017.

A video outlining the claim has since been shared more than 5,000 times on Facebook and Twitter.

In it, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), tells his followers that Buhari had died.

“The man you are looking at on the television is not Buhari… His name is Jubril, he’s from Sudan. After extensive surgery they brought him back,” he says. Kanu has separately referred to the supposed lookalike as “Jubril Al-Sudani”.

Others have called him “Jibrin”.Neither Kanu nor the others making the claim have provided any credible evidence.

The rumour has been fuelled by the real-life death of a Nigerian diplomat in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum in May 2018.

There have been allegations that the diplomat was deliberately killed due to his involvement in the supposed cover-up about Buhari.

Reno Omokri, a former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan and Femi Fani Kayode, a former government special advisor and minister under president Olusegun Obasanjo, have both repeated the claims.

Several videos repeating the claims have been viewed on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube more than 500,000 times.

Senator Ajayi Boroffice, a professor of genetics, has also dismissed the possibility of cloning a 75-year–old man such as Buhari.

According to him, it is “ridiculous for anybody to think Mr.President has been cloned and that the person who is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a clone from Sudan.”

Quote
'Somebody just thought I am cloned, they are only disappointed that I am alive' President Buhari .

Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari has denied speculations that he had passed on at a London hospital where he was receiving treatment. . .
Buhari has made several trips to London for medical treatment since mid-2016. Initially, the presidency claimed he had a “persistent ear infection”. Several high-profile figures in Nigeria, including a former government minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, have claimed that Buhari has died and been replaced by a lookalike from Sudan. .
.
Tweets, Facebook posts and YouTube videos repeating claims that the president is an imposter called “Jubril” have been shared and viewed over 500,000 times. .
.

Reacting to this, Buhari while speaking in Poland on Sunday said the speculations were all “hopes that he had died”
“It is me,” Buhari declared, while he also stated that he will “soon celebrate my 76th birthday and I will still go strong.”
Claims about Buhari’s identity emerged a month after Buhari returned from another lengthy medical trip to the British capital.

Methinks the best way to convince these clueless Nigerians is to invite the so called Jubrin  to Nigeria to pay an official visit to Mr President..

The 2019 election will reveal the truth. I am not praying for anyone's death. But, from all indications the man in Aso Rock doesn't talk and act like the man we all Nigerians know as Buhari. Even here in Lagos, all his pictures used in his posters and billboards are his old pictures, why don't they snap and use his recent pictures?

After all these months of alleged plastic surgery and body parts cloning, this man came back from yet another reconstructive makeup to make "a minute video" to refute such a big national concern? Something still fishy about this man: either he is not Buhari or he thinks Nigerian could be taken for a ride.  Every right thinking President would call a press conference, and, on the most popular news outlet, address the allegation squarely. This is very disrespectful to all Nigerians who wish to see our elected president succeed, talk to his people (the country) and address each point of the argument to reassure the nation. To this point, we are still not convinced that he is not Jibril from Sudan. This is a slap in the face of all Nigerians who have been patient to hear from our president. He can do a better job than this.

Bytheway, why is it every time opportunity presents itself for our president to talk to his people (the country) he resorts to publication via public relations officer's messages?  Every citizen wants to hear his/her president talk. That is the pride of citizenship; therefore, speaking through somebody or some news media most of the time does not make the citizens of this country proud. We want our President back. Speak to your people, no matter how bad your voice may have been affected by aging and sickness.
