The Lagos State Government through Ministry of Agriculture Taskforce on Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit and the Nigeria Police Force at the weekend, seized 30 tonnes of Cow skin popularly known as ‘Ponmo’ presumed to be poisonous and unhealthy for human consumption at a skin hide processing factory located at College Road in Igando area of Lagos State.
Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Oluwatoyin Suarau said a special operation which led to the arrest of operators of the factory was based on a tip-off by concerned members of the public who became suspicious of activities in the factory where harmful smoke and offensive stench oozed out from during the processing and preservation. Suarau explained that the activity of the illegal ‘ponmo’ processing factory posed health and environmental hazard to the public and the processors themselves. He said: “The factory and activities of the ‘Ponmo’ processors constitute a health risk not only to processors but residents of adjoining communities.”
