Oyo State governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, has advised members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers to always follow the path of peace in resolving union matters as a mark of respect for the death of their leaders.

The union’s National President, Alhaji Gidado Hamman; the General Secretary, Mr. Mudasiru Alao; and the National Organising Secretary, Mr. John Olaoye, died in an automobile accident in Abuja on Wednesday.

The Oyo State council of the union is currently factionalised along the lines of the court reinstated chairman, Alhaji Lateef Akinsola (Tokyo); and a former acting Chairman, Alhaji Lateef Salako (Eleweomo).

The state government had, at the peak of the crisis that has claimed many lives, proscribed the activities of the union in the state and directed local government chairmen to appoint motor park managers for parks under their jurisdiction.

The latest victim of the factional clashes was a member of the union, who was killed alongside his wife in Alakia, in Ibadan, the state capital on Monday midnight.

While describing the death of the NUTRW national leaders in the accident as unfortunate, Alao-Akala urged the union members to use the deaths for sober reflection.

The governor, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Public Communications, Mr. Dotun Oyelade, asked union members to ensure that their leaders did not die in vain by creating a better image for the union.

According to the governor, Hamman, before his death, played an active role across the country in dousing the tension caused by restive members.

He described the officers as diligent members, working for one of the most virile and critical unions in the country.
