The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig-Gen. Maharazu Tsiga, has said that the scheme does not discriminate against pregnant women or nursing mothers.

Tsiga made the clarification in his address at a training workshop for NYSC in Abuja, on Thursday.

The DG also used the occasion to restate the scheme’s commitment to promoting gender equality within the NYSC structure.

Tsiga said the employment policy of the scheme was not in any way discriminatory because the NYSC boasts of a large percentage of females in its employment.

According to him, “Management has ensured that no female corps member is precluded from participating in national service on the grounds of pregnancy or being a nursing mother.

“It has been a consistent policy of the scheme to ensure that married corps members are deployed to the state of domicile of their husbands.

“Furthermore, they are also given special consideration on postings to places of primary assignment as their roles as mothers are appreciated when they are posted to places of assignment that will not jeopardise their domestic commitments.

“Today, the entire world has brought gender matters to the limelight because it has been realised that it can be one of the keys through which mankind can open a floodgate of peace, security and development.”
