The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to commence a nationwide indefinite strike starting at midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024, due to the Federal Government's refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage above N60,000.
This decision was confirmed by NLC President Joe Ajaero at a press conference held at Labour House in Abuja.
The strike action comes after unsuccessful negotiations between the Federal Government and organized labour, which includes the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
The labour unions had initially given a deadline of May 31, 2024, for the government to agree on a new minimum wage.
During the talks, the government and the organized private sector raised their offer to N60,000, up from an earlier proposal of N57,000.
However, this increase was insufficient to meet the demands of the labour unions, leading to the current impasse and the decision to strike.
