In a heartbreaking turn of events, 11-year-old Iremide Opeifa met a tragic fate as he drowned in a swimming pool at the Grand Bank Link Hotels situated along Idiroko Road in the Sango Ota area of Ogun State.

The incident, which occurred on a Sunday evening, has left the community reeling with shock and sorrow.

According to accounts gathered by Punch Metro, young Iremide had finished assisting his mother at her shop before heading to the hotel where the unfortunate incident took place.

Kehinde Opeifa, the younger sister of the deceased's mother, expressed outrage over the lack of prompt medical attention provided by the hotel staff following the drowning. She alleged that despite the absence of a lifeguard, no efforts were made to ensure the safety of swimmers or to administer aid to Iremide.

Recounting the events leading up to the tragedy, she stated, "No effort was even made to take him to the hospital, they just left him there on the floor. We asked the person in charge of the pool why he collected money from such a young boy and allowed him into the swimming pool."

Subsequent attempts to seek medical assistance were met with further distress as the family faced rejection from two hospitals before finally arriving at a third, where Iremide was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.

Adding to the family's anguish, Modupe Babafemi, another relative, expressed dissatisfaction with the response of local authorities, alleging a lack of action from the police in investigating the incident and viewing the boy's body.

The untimely demise of young Iremide serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in recreational facilities, and calls for thorough investigations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
