The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Jos has urged the Federal Government to address the escalating security issues and economic hardships plaguing Nigeria. At a news conference held on Friday in Jos, the union's chairman, Associate Professor Jurbe Molwus, highlighted several critical concerns.

Molwus attributed the worsening poverty among Nigerians to certain government policies, particularly the removal of the fuel subsidy. He explained that the removal of the subsidy and the introduction of a floating exchange rate have led to hyperinflation, resulting in significantly higher prices for commodities and a decline in the quality of life for ordinary citizens. Molwus emphasized that these economic policies are widening the gap between the wealthy and the poor.

The ASUU chairman called on the federal government to expedite the process of establishing a new minimum wage, as demanded by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). He also urged a comprehensive review of all economic policies that are contributing to the deteriorating living standards in the country.

Moreover, Molwus demanded that the government honor all agreements previously made with ASUU. He warned that failure to do so within the 14-day ultimatum issued by ASUU's National Executive Council could lead to a full-scale industrial action by the union. This highlights the urgency and seriousness of ASUU's demands, as well as the potential for significant disruption in the university sector if the government does not respond adequately.
