A shocking incident unfolded during a high school graduation ceremony in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a man shot his stepmother while she attempted to embrace him, authorities revealed.
Identified as Christian Bencomo, 21, the suspect is currently held without bail following the disturbing incident, reported by Fox News. The Albuquerque Police Department (APD) responded to reports of shots fired at the Albuquerque Convention Center around 5 p.m.
According to police statements, the woman was attending the Southwest Secondary Learning Center graduation to celebrate her son's milestone. However, the joyous occasion turned tragic when her stepson arrived. As she moved to hug him, he reportedly produced a handgun and fired, striking her in the neck.
Speaking to the media amidst the chaos, APD Communications Director Gilbert Gallegos described the scene as fraught with confusion. The ceremony, attended by over 100 people, was disrupted by the sudden violence. Despite the tumult, the injured woman was swiftly transported to a hospital and is expected to survive her injuries.
Bencomo was apprehended by bystanders and held until police arrived on the scene, according to APD statements. Subsequent jail records from the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center indicate a slew of charges against Bencomo, including unlawful carrying of a weapon, aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony, aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm to a family member, and preventative detention.
