A septuagenarian, Pa, Dagama Asemota, has said that one year after his son, Osagie, was gruesomely murdered by gunmen, the police are yet to fish out his killers and bring them to book. The distraught father said his son was killed on March 30, 2023 on the street of Benin City, the Edo State capital, after a reckless shooting by some gunmen at a polling station in Ogheghe, Ikpoba/Okha Local Government Area of the state metropolis, on February 25, 2023, during the Presidential election.

Pa Asemota said during the invasion of the venue of the election by the hoodlums who were shooting indiscriminately, it was in the process that one Mrs. Elizabeth Owie, a mother of three and one Idahosa Festus were hit by stray bullets and they died on the spot, while the third person sustained gunshot wounds.

Genesis

Narrating his experience, the 90-year-old man said, one year after the unfortunate incident and the gruesome murder of his son, the Police are yet to fish out those behind the killing. He said he had been living with the loss of his son since then and it remains painful. “After the murder of my son, the Edo State government and the police promised to fish out his killers, since then nothing has been done to bring them out.

I am appealing to the Edo State government and the Police to fulfill the promise they made over a year ago to fish out the people who killed my son in broad daylight. “More worrisome to me is the constant calls I receives daily from unknown persons threatening to kill my nephew, one Christian Asemota, the wife and children. Because of the threat, my nephew has since fled Benin City to an unknown location due to the constant threat to his life.”

Threat

Speaking on the constant death threats he receives, Dagama said,
Quote
‘‘Christian is like a son to me. I cannot afford to lose him again. The police are yet to make any arrest following the killing of my son. The killers are still lurking around also walking freely in the city without challenge to them. “I am just coming out of the issue since my son was killed in the presence of his nephew Christian, who is also on the run because of threats to his life by the suspected killers.

“Each time I remember the death of my son it always brings me sad memories, my appeal is that I want the killers of my son to be brought to book and face justice. I don’t want him to die in vain. I am also afraid not to lose my nephew who is being threatened because Osagie was killed in his presence, the killers also want to eliminate him simply because he identified them. It is a sad story at my age.

“Dagama said the people who accused his nephew of carrying out the fatal Election day attack were the same people who ambushed his late son and his cousin on March 30, 2023 at Ramat Park as they cruised round the city along with Christian’s wife and children in his car before Osagie was shot in the presence of the kids, Christian’s wife and Christian himself in a broad day light.

“Everybody in the area was watching, nobody could come to the rescue of my son, who later died. I don’t know where to start or have such a child at my age. I cannot marry and have such a grown up child again. I want my son’s killers to be brought before justice. I don’t want him to die in vain.

Each time I remember him I always weep uncontrollably, because I love him dearly. “Osagie later died of the gunshot wounds, while Christian, who was on the wheels, was said to have escaped with his wife and Children from the scene to unknown destination. It was a terrible situation. The Inspector General of Police, Edo State Commissioner of Police and other security agencies in the state should come to my aid and arrest the killers of my son and prosecute them.”

Lamentation

The elderly man lamented that his son and nephew, Christian were accused of involvement in the shooting on the election day He said: “The hoodlums shot my son Osagie and his nephew Christian over alleged involvement in the killing of two people and injuring of one at Ogheghe, that was why they came after them and killed my son. My son and his nephew only went to the pooling centre to cast their votes when the unfortunate incident occurred. “My son knew nothing about the shooting at the pooling centre, I don’t know why my son was killed.

I don’t want his killers to go unpunished. I need justice for him, I also want to see those who killed him. Because I don’t want his nephew to be killed as well for the offence he knew nothing about. Edo State government and the police should help me. “After killing my son, they have been sending series of death threats to my nephew Christian, which made him flee from home. His whereabouts remains unknown till date. I don’t want him dead.

“The hoodlums are threatening to kill him as they insist they will not relent until Christian is killed, even though he knew nothing about the matter. The Police had earlier declared him wanted over the Election Day incident at Ogheghe before the killing of his cousin, I am tired of all the troubles.”

He added that his nephew is an easy going person in the community, “I don’t know where he came across these issue of killing.” “My nephew is an easy going person and also scared of coming out of his hiding, because the suspected killers are still after him, the Police should apprehend and bring to justice the suspected killers of my son.”

Police react

The Edo State Police spokesman, SP Chidi Nwanbuzor, who confirmed the killing of Osagie by some unknown gunmen, however, said that investigations of the matter ran into a hitch following the transfer of the investigating Police Officer (IPO) to another state. Nwanbuzor, said: “I am aware of the killing, but no arrest had been mad so far.” He said: “I can’t speak authoritatively on the matter because the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) was affected by the recent nationwide transfer of police officers. The case has not be assigned to any officer since then for further investigation.”
